    Couple of things here. The reissues have more bass because that's what Rudy recorded on the master tapes. We do not roll that off as Rudy had to do in the 50s and 60s. The "punch" you speak of, or as Michael said "all the instruments are at the same level" comes from the compression Rudy added in mastering. We don't use compression. On the other hand, if one enjoys hunting (and paying for) OGs, I'm all for it! Whatever doorway into this fabulous music you take, whichever makes you happy, is the correct choice!

      I'm a huge believer that at their best, these new releases, are capable of exceeding the originals, if done correctly. Every Classic and Tone Poet i've picked up so far has been beyond excellent.

    Wow those Sonny Clark originals are beautiful. For me, it is an amazing feeling to hold records from that time period when they are in such nice condition, even the inexpensive ones.

    Great, great!!! The monos are impossible to beat. To me, even lacking of some bass and sometimes top end, these are the ones you are happy to listen to the most. This is top fun to listen to those blue note OG!

    That’s some top notch pieces right there they don’t press them like that anymore I wish I had those . The sound of those original pressings IMO is outstanding I’ve never seen those OGs in the wild before I with you guys Mono is the way to go 🥂.

    Great stream! I’m envious of all that space on the shelves! I only have a handful of originals, but usually I prefer the Tone Poets / MMJ, but I should revisit this on some. Unfortunately mine are more VG / VG-, so more surface noise :/

    Michael, I know you’re know you’re not the biggest Beatles fan but I do hope you do a comparison of the Red and Blue remixes and the 2014 analog pressings. Yours is the only opinion I put stock in.

    Amazing finds! Great conversation! In my experience, the mono cartridge will also help bring out the bass a bit along with some more clarity and robustness. A testament to how good those records must sound.

    50s/60s presses are unsurpassed.. agree. I don't think the newer pressing plants match the care and technique of the lathes to cutting and pressing l.. aside from what I have read and know about ERC but not experientially. Having tasted for eg. Columbia SAX, Decca SXL and 1st press Blue Note as examples gracing my turntables, this is true to what my ears have taken in. Thx for this piece.

    This is why I focus on first presses in mono. I think you will be quite surprised at the improvement with a mono cart

    I have about 70 OG Blue Notes and for some titles I also have a modern version, I always like the OG´s better. I also have a dedicated mono tonearm and this is very important, a must have, when you buy the old monos.

  • @hennietaljaard9096
    @hennietaljaard9096 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I have some of the Blue Note originals. Compared to modern versions they are warmer and more cohesive. with the monos the image is in the middle. I think the old valve equipment has a lot to do with this.

  • @dariuszsalamon9441
    @dariuszsalamon9441 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    the sound of old titles was limited by bandwidth of the cutting lathe back in a day and also limited dynamic because cartridges would not handle it back in 50s and 60s

    I suppose, you heard the Original Cool Struttin with Mono-Cartridge. Which one? The much better sound with Mono-Carts is my experience too, especially with Miyajima Kotetu Mono or AT 33 Mono.

  • @alwilliams5177

    You can't compare mono to stereo. Mono always seems louder and more solid. It has more punch. Unlike R&R, they made great stereo jazz albums very early (Blues and The Abstract Truth fkr instance). Never heard an album that was released in both that sounded better in stereo.

    Are you playing these mono original pressings on a mono cartridge? If not, then you aren't going to get a proper impression on them.
