We had one of those 1924 Mercs as a workshop shunter, drove it a few times, loved the reverse 6 speed ZF box, kept you thinking. Truck has since been restored by a collector.
Love this one Steve great video thanks for posting it glad to see these old trucks still running and you collecting them and showing them to us another good video and good content glad too see your still posting keep the videos when you can Steve love them all thanks my friend
Probably the best trucks ever made, witnessed by the amount of them still in daily use in many parts of the world to this day. Funnily enough, I was on holiday on the Greek island of Kefalonia just this week and saw a dump truck version of the same truck. There is also an even older Mercedes truck at a cafe we visit which the owners dad purchased new and drove all the way from Germany. It still runs as sweet as a nut too.
Steve, great history story from your work. Bet it was more fun years ago. I think it's beautiful you have that truck. I never saw that one. That radiator fill spout is beautiful brass. They just do not make stuff like that anymore. What a great looking truck. As always, wonderful video and educational. Jim
It would be good to see it taken for a drive. Look forward to it. I guess you have to find out whether you are allowed to or not. Cheers mate from William.
Dust control, here in Michigan I worked for a local company spreading chloride, great job, driving around country dirt roads at 12 mph finding all kinds of hidden iron. The look on your face when it started is priceless 🤠 Keep up the awesome videos.
Would absolutely love to see her go for a drive Steve, my uncle used to haul grain for a local company in the Hunter Valley with an old 6x2 Benz back in the early 80's. Not the most powerful trucks back in the day but the old OM355 engines like this one were smooth and reliable.
First truck i ever learned to drive was a 1418 single drive tipper on a farm used to load it up till the dirt was overflowing 😂 it was a tough old jigga i seem to remember it having the engine stopper on the floor you used as a engine brake as well
Firstly, yes I would like to see it move once again. Secondly it always amazes me how these machines that have been sitting for years start and some including this one turns over like it was on turned off yesterday. I also liked the history of the work it did with you at the wheel. King of the road at 16 👍👏
Nice for you too tell the history of the Mercedes, and your first driving experience. Needs a bleddy good clean up less turds more wheels turning 😂, thanks for sharing 👍💨💨
A lot of history with that old Merc and yourself Steve . I would like to see it come out of its resting place . See you are all dressed up for winter , gonna be about 45c for us today mate. 🌵
Awesome morning little brother little sister from another country down under awesome adventure brother that was awesome !!!!! The gal was screaming take me for one last ride !!!! The cabover sitting next to her cought my eye immediately that Ole gal is awesome awesome story with this one as always can remember those days !!! I was 13 yrs old when I drove my first big truck !!! Awesome !!! Waiting patiently lol for future videos from these trucks !!! Say hi to everyone for me !!! Totally awesome video yall are awesome as always little brother little sister !!! Have an awesome day 😊😊😊😊
Hi Steve. Really enjoyed this one because Corgi made a diecast version back in the day; I’ve seen versions with either a twin-deck car transporter or a tanker trailer. I still have the single-drive tractor but I’m not sure what happened to the trailer! Great to see a 1:1-scale survivor and I reckon she’s well deserving a restoration; 6 years fallow but still virtually on the button, she deserves some love 🙂
Another great video Steve good old trucks my uncle drove his own 1418 flat top doing interstate for years up and down the pacific hwy many years ago no duel lanes back then . Motor sounds beautiful good to see her drive again thanks for showing use.
These were great ol' trucks, solid as, use to drive (same model), one from time to time when I was working for Pioneer Quarries north of Brisbane many years ago, it was a water cart used for watering down the haul roads, great fun to drive. Thanks for sharing,
Those Mercedes were rare birds here but I absolutely adored them growing up in the 80’s, you’d see a few out on the east coast. Great content, Steve, loved it!
Hi Rob hope all is well mate and sorry for late reply. I’d never given it a thought as to whether they were over there or not. That’s interesting considering they were in a lot of countries
I think the driver would had to have changed his shorts after jackknifing. It lived a similar life to my ‘65 White which pulled a water trailer in an iron mine. I’d like to see it out moving. 👍
Love your channel here in the states please don't stop what your doing we have tons of stuff sitting around here but its not the same I subscribe and like every video. Thank You Steve
I love those Mercedes trucks. I fact, they are indestructible and this one started right away as if it had never stopped working. They were part of my childhood. We lived near a quarry and they would pass our house back in the sixties. I could recognise them by the engine noise It's quite sad to see this one sitting like this, but the core is still working perfectly. It's a jewel and you should keep it and restore it. This short bonnet truck has been a huge success and bestseller for decades..and a lot of them are still used up until today for heavy duty work for their reliability around the world . Here is some of the history.. The first short-bonnet truck model, the Mercedes-Benz L 337, was first produced in Germany in 1959. Its technical successors were in production for export until 1995, long after domestic German sales had ended.[1] The short-bonnet truck was a big export success for Mercedes-Benz and became very popular in the Middle East, Asia Pacific, South America, and Africa. Greetings to down under from Germany
You said the motor was good, Steve, and it sure sounded like it. A quality built unit for certain. I saw a pretty cool old Merc truck once, it had a 3 way tipper body on it. The had a central ram and the bed sat on 4 balls. Depending on which ones were locked and unlocked you could tip to the rear or either side. It was a lot smaller than yours but the cab was similar. All the best, Mart in England.
Hey up mate thanks for another cool video, the older merc stuff was so well made, maintained properly lasts forever enjoyed an early sandwich with this
Gday Steve, bloody amazing how easy that started, when I was a kid a local logging contractor used to run 1418’s, big ask really when you see a single rider sitting up there but they did it, it’d be nice to see this restored one day, great episode mate, cheers
She sounds sweet and deserves some TLC. To fire up that easily with a leaky lift pump and the fuel line cracked open, the old girl is just itching to be of use again. I'd love to see her in action Steve. Cheers Eric
Wiow brings back memories, the family we got parents place from had 1 of these a white single axle towed a tandem trailer to move tractors and harversters hay bales etc from the station into our place that was the finishing block can smell the pipe tobacco now mr McGuinness always had his pipe going , they replaced it in 99 with a new Merc
This brings back memories too. When i was like 15 or so i had a holiday job at a garden centre an we used to have a L1313 a little 4x4 tipper truck with a hiab crane. Best truck for off roading it never got stuck. I used to drive it around the yard for loading and unloading. I remember that in the centre console there was a knob or a bolt that could be turned to rev up the engine when it was cold and when you pushed it you'de shut it down. Your version would have a OM355 engine installed and actually in Iran these trucks are still produced. But with such a story behind this one it should be fixed up and driven around and not left to rot in the woods.
Great to see Steve, I believe the M.A.N trucks of this area were very similar? drove one on a farm with no brakes so had to be on to it with the 6speed ZF box. Boss ran out of diesel one day which made for an interesting trip down the paddock. Truck had a 240v plug hanging out the grill that was often joked about, apparently it had a coil in the sump to keep it warm overnight when it had worked in Canberra.. Great old trucks!
Mercs were popular here in NZ back in the day. I drove a 1418 for a short spell. They were indestructible, but 40 mph was as quick as they got. I moved over to the Gold Coast for a while in the 80s. Met a guy who owned cabover 240 and a 1418. He loved his 1418 Benz as he called it 😄 He used to run Brisbane/Melbourne/Perth and return at 40 mph 😳 and slung a hammock under the semi. Mind blowing to a kiwi where 500 ks was a big trip. Tough bugger, guess we all were back then ... no mod cons. Would love to see your one drive. Thanks for the video.
hey steve, great to see the 1924 there was one here in my town it was used to cart stock between the 1924 and 1418 they made transport companies alot of money. one company here had 12 of them all long haul trucks with there reliability and cheap on fuel,i never see one as a bogie drive ,only seen them as single drives,i love to see one back on the road again ,great viewing once again steve keep it going ,thumbs up
Good morning Steve ,well really nice to see an old Benz ,they were very present on the roads in my driving career the 1418 was in big numbers recon that truck made a lot of money for many operators .i got to drive a 2228 V8 for a while and i loved it nice sounding (V8) i love V8,s only thing letting Benz down no Jake😢😢,that old girl started and run so clean no big clouds of smoke, yes Mate would love to see her go for a drive,if you can manage that ,another great video Steve Thanks Kym Adelaide
Hi Kym. It is good to show one on the channel yes mate. The V8 Benzs always sound good. Thanks for sharing also Kym. Good to read these yarns mate. Driving video coming
These old bonneted Mercs are legendary wagons in South America and Africa and elsewhere, simply because (as you've demonstrated) they will start and run and do a day's decent work after sitting idle for ages.
Yup, get her driving out of the spot for sure. When I quit driving I worked for an Agency and youd usually get the unloved trucks unless you proved yourself which was fair enough. The one I loved of all of them was an Old 1418 Yard pig single drive and I spent a week collecting empty trailers from all over Vic in between cleaning her up cosmetically so I could see out the windows and mirrors lol 3rd day I asked the workshop to do a few things, tyres, wipers and fluids and 2 hours later I was back at work hauling some long forgotten flat and pantec trailers out of yards and paddocks putting the trailer brake lever to good use. Around the yard there were way younger DDEC trucks all pretty and air everything, most of em with AC and way quieter but this old girl spoke to me which was handy hauling long parked trailers. I ended up doing a bit of weekend work for that mob every few months or so and they spent some time on that old 1418 and made her whole, even chucked a new seat in her and a roof mount AC for summer which was decent of em, They never offered and I never asked for a different truck but she was pretty schmicko and got a few nods from the old blokes.
It's a classic, as the other comments say, it would be nice to see this thing out on the road. And there would be worse things you could add to your fleet.
I think this is the best lorry and engine Mercedes Benz ever made once I bought 7 of them 6x4from Spain and my friend bought two I have sold some of them in Syria free Zone and some ssold in the big auction in Dubai after we have done them up and I think they are still going and they can go for every 😅😅😅thanks for the video ✌😍✌👍👍👍
Another great video - I saw a lot of these trucks in Jordan they really looked like great workhorses. Thanks for taking the time to tell the story - a brilliant insight
Yes mate ,Would love to See her Up & about ! I think She is 1974 model ,But Could easily be wrong ? I owned a New 1974 1418 Mercedes Benz ,Same Cab just the Smaller Horsepower variant ! BUT NOT ZF transmission or Hub Reduction Rear End ! It had 5 Speed Transmission with 2 Speed Differential,Hypoid ! I Carried timber from our Sawmill to Brisbane 3 times a Week ! 60 tonne weekly for builders & Home building Industry ! With a tria/ Axle 40' trailer . Was Amazing Truck But only Regret was not buying the 1924 ! WONDERFUL Engine,Silk Smooth . Mills Bros from Murwillumbah had a fleet of them mostly 1418 ! These, but being a little lighter then 1924 ,& more Highway ! These Trucks would turn on tuppence, So yeah ,She will Come out of there ! Thank U mate, great Seeing & hearing her going again ,Memories of yesterday & as U Said ,Great times of our Past !
Hi mate and thanks for sharing this interesting read. This is roughly 74 mate yes without looking harder. Great old trucks. Made this mob a lot of money.
Gday Steve. I remember dad getting the first one of these in the yard. Replaced the old 1957 Commer knocker he was driving. Prime mover pulling a trailer for a gravel mob at Willoughby/ Chatswood. Of course when you’re nine years old, it looked a lot bigger. Good work mate 😊🚛
Wow that M-B sounds like it ran yesterday rather than years ago. Smooth, and good revs when you hammer it. Very nice Steve! If the tires and turn signal lenses are less than about $480,000 (like they would be here in Canada 😃) , this one would be a nice utility truck around your place I think , if a used cab can be found. Liked the video. Cheers.
lovely old truck those mercs actually seen one here in ireland for sale about four years ago i think it had new cab on it was in amazing condition would love to have bought it i remember a company not from me in the 70s having one they are the only two i seen here but there could have been more back in the 70s
Amazing these old diesels still run so well after all those years!!
Love to see it move Steve. Tks.
Yes I would love to see the old Benz up and running down the road.👍👍
Steve a truck that's been in your life for so long should be yours, memories are so important as we get older, so please yes take her for a drive
Maybe one day it may be mate
As a retired trucker she was singing my song! Sounded strong!
These Benzes are real icons.
We had one of those 1924 Mercs as a workshop shunter, drove it a few times, loved the reverse 6 speed ZF box, kept you thinking. Truck has since been restored by a collector.
Great stuff thanks Jimmy
you're a great speaker and story teller
Thank you mate
that's perfect as a platform for next Mad Max's Movie! and of course we want to see that thing moving.
The good old Merc diesels. You can't kill them. That engine could take the nastiest fuel and still run. Worth saving for sure.
What an engine . Buy it and fix it up . Best trucks ever .
Yep, would certainly love to see it move Steve.
She certainly will John
Yeah Steve take it for a drive, should bring back some memories for you. 🍻
Hi Mark. Yeah mate video being edited now for driving it

in Argentina it was the base for our buses, I think today they use newer units, from different manufacturers, but with the straight 6 Mercedes engine.
Thanks for sharing this mate.
Good old engine sounds like she still has most of her ponies too. Keep them coming thanks mate.
Steve, great history story from your work. Bet it was more fun years ago. I think it's beautiful you have that truck. I never saw that one. That radiator fill spout is beautiful brass. Cheers mate from William.
These bullnosed Mercedes trucks were very popular in South Africa too. Made at East London plant.
Dust control, here in Michigan I worked for a local company spreading chloride, great job, driving around country dirt roads at 12 mph finding all kinds of hidden iron. The look on your face when it started is priceless 🤠 Keep up the awesome videos.

Such an unike and iconic design. I remember them being quite a common sight in my youth. She definitely deserves a second chance 👍
Old warrior like that one deserves to be restored.
It's a shame they let it get like that, I'd love one as a mobile home considering house prices
Please take it out for a drive Steve, Love these old Mercedes truck

Yeah Steve i would like to see it move down the road again it would be a cool episode.🙂👍👍
I think the driver would had to have changed his shorts after jackknifing. It lived a similar life to my ‘65 White which pulled a water trailer in an iron mine. I’d like to see it out moving. 👍
Yeah mate I think it was a fair event when it happened

Saw 1924 and briefly thought it was the year!😂
Yep, would be good to get it moving.
Recon that should be a priority for a resto Steve with its history its great mate 👍
The more comments I read Nick the more I think so too mate

Как же хороши были эти старые автомобили. Без каких-либо электронных блоков управления. Всё просто и надёжно. Класс!
They certainly were mate yes
Would be nice to see her driving again! Started right up! Production quality on these videos has also improved, cheers
Hi mate thanks for the support
These old bonneted Mercs are legendary wagons in South America and Africa and elsewhere, simply because (as you've demonstrated) they will start and run and do a day's decent work after sitting idle for ages.
They certainly are reliable mate
Love the open can of fuel next to that ‘rough’ battery setup…
Not really a problem with diesel, it's not nearly as flammable as petrol.
You could tip it all over it and absolutely nothing would happen
Mighty old machine, great see it move 👏👏
Yup, get her driving out of the spot for sure.
When I quit driving I worked for an Agency and youd usually get the unloved trucks unless you proved yourself which was fair enough.

Yep lets see it movin
Video coming mate

Thank you mate
Another great video - I saw a lot of these trucks in Jordan they really looked like great workhorses. Thanks for taking the time to tell the story - a brilliant insight
Brilliant mate thank you
Yes please Steve, I would love to see it drive.
Video to come Neil
The old 1418 and 1924 Benzs were great trucks
They certainly were mate
bravo cool
Hi Mick thanks for sharing mate
Wow that M-B sounds like it ran yesterday rather than years ago. Smooth, and good revs when you hammer it. Very nice Steve! If the tires and turn signal lenses are less than about $480,000 (like they would be here in Canada 😃) , this one would be a nice utility truck around your place I think , if a used cab can be found. Liked the video. Cheers.
Thanks for watching Jeff. Sorry for late reply. I can’t keep up with the comments
@@stevesplacedownunder no worries Steve! take care.
