    Lyrics for the music video:
Twenty years old, pretty smart kid
Didn't know what I wanted to do
    So I took the LSAT
    And just like that
I got accepted at Glendale U
Everyone said it was a real safe bet
    A prestigious and lucrative vocation
So I set off on a journey
    To become an attorney
    Without a moment's hesitation
But here's some free advice I'm givin'
When it comes to decidin' what to do for a livin'
    Don't be a lawyer!
    Don't do it!
Quickest way to ruin your life
    Don't be a lawyer!
    Not worth it!
    It'll leave you dead inside
    The job is inherently crappy
    That's why you've never met a lawyer who's happy
    It's a guaranteed soul destroyer
    Don't be a lawyer
    Law school debt
    Daily regret
Is that really what you dreamed as a kid?
Or did you hope one day
    That you'd find a way
To spend four years workin' on a pharmaceutical company's merger with another pharmaceutical company?
    Your only expertise
    Is runnin' up fees
    Speakin' legalese like a dick
    But it's not too late
    To avoid this fate
Find any other job to pick
Sure, your parents might think you're a failure
But no one's ever said, "First, let's kill all the tailors."
    Don't be a lawyer!
I'm serious, it really, really sucks
    Don't be a lawyer!
No one you work with looks like Ally McBeal
There are so many other professions
That don't turn you into Jeff Sessions
Just say no to the lawyer employer
    No, don't be a lawyer
    What about human rights law?
    No money, no, no money
    Environmental law?
    No money, even less money
    Immigration law?
No money, plus it's a bummer
Okay, but what if you make it to the Supreme Court?
It'd be great to be on the Supreme Court
But you'll never be on the Supreme Court
There's truly no chance of that happenin'
The preceding song in no way reflects the views of CBS and the CW network
    Ah, screw it
    See? Don't be a lawyer!

I get asked a lot about whether being a practicing attorney is like being a lawyer on TV. I love watching legal movies and courtroom dramas. It's one of the reasons I decided to become a lawyer. But sometimes they make me want to pull my hair out because they are ridiculous. Today I'm taking a break from representing clients and teaching law students how to kick ass in law school to take on lawyers in the movies and on TV. While all legal movies and shows take dramatic license to make things more interesting (nobody wants to see hundreds of hours of brief writing), many of them have a grain of truth. This is part of a continuing series of "Lawyer Reaction" videos. Got a legal movie or TV show you'd like me to critique? Let me know in the comments!
Typical legal disclaimer from a lawyer (occupational hazard): This is not legal advice, nor can I give you legal advice. Sorry! My first thought was the urban legend about the man running into the "unbreakable" window (to show it was unbreakable) and falling out when it came loose instead. Apparently, it really happened, and the guy "testing" the window was a lawyer.

    • @ArgzeroYT
      @ArgzeroYT 4 ปีที่แล้ว +26

The rates for that are the highest in the country for doctors and then lawyers. Ironically, those who want to and are most likely to save your life are often those who are least likely to save their own.
That said, the CDC does suggest there are some more potentially likely cases in other professions. Here are some of the seemingly conflicting sources:
      www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2018/07/31/634217947/to-prevent-doctor-suicides-medical-industry-rethinks-how-doctors-work
      onlinelibrary-wiley-com.ezproxy.rit.edu/doi/pdf/10.1111/j.1600-0447.1987.tb02765.x (see abstract)
      journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.3109/00048670903487191?rfr_dat=cr_pub%3Dpubmed&url_ver=Z39.88-2003&rfr_id=ori%3Arid%3Acrossref.org&journalCode=anpa
      www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/67/wr/pdfs/mm6745a1-H.pdf
      Notes on this one:
      - limited to violent deaths
      - Table 2 percentages do not represent percentages of a profession but rather percentages of a dataset
      - For actual comparability investigate percentages of people in each profession - You'd be surprised how few physicians there are compared to other professions

I went to UCR because there was 100% placement if you got a teaching credential. What they didn’t say was that it would be in Moreno Valley. I quit the program immediately and vowed to move as far away from the Inland Empire as I possible. I HAVE NEVER GONE BACK. No college reunions, no nothing!
But I do regret not going to law school (just a little bit). I had an internship out of high school for the corporate department of a San Diego law firm (early to mid eighties). I enjoyed the research and prep aspect of the legal profession. And I didn’t mind that we were often defending the “bad” guys. One of the name partners even said that I’d have a guaranteed job there if I passed the bar.
Alas! I broke those lawyers’ hearts when I admitted that paralegal work was more appealing to me than appearing in court.
So I majored in English and I ended up in contracts management for a university foundation for several years. I loved that job. And I really loved that my student debt was only a few thousand dollars instead of a few *hundred* thousand dollars.

    1) The song is a parody of 90's rap dance songs (think MC Hammer, Milli Vanilli, Fine Young Cannibals , Will Smith, etc.) hence the loose fit and crazy shiny colours.
    2) The guy who is singing the song was a lawyer who quit lawyering and joined Rebecca (the main character) at her pretzels business. Two or three episodes later he decided being a lawyer is better than that and came back to practising law.

    • @WelcomeApathy
      @WelcomeApathy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +155

#2 - actually, he left his lawyer job first and opened the pretzel shop. When Rebecca found out, she got a job working for him. She then messed it up, got him in trouble with the corporate company who was going to shut him down, and he decided he didn't like managing other people anyway. That's when he went back to his lawyer job.
Then Rebecca decided to buy out the shop and make her own pretzel shop.

Nothing is worse that working with lawyers....I became a terrible person when I was a lawyer. But I will say law school was an amazing 3 years. I loved it. It was stressful, exhausting, and amazing. I excelled at it. Graduated fourth in my class. Had an article published in the law review. Had a job right out of law school with a downtown firm. I thought I had it all figured out. Then after I passed the bar, I lived the 5 worst years of my life. At least I didn't become a alcoholic like most of the partners of the firm. When I decided not to be so hardcore in my application of the law, the partners quickly lost their ardor for me and my chances of becoming a partner faded away. @kenziebritton3580 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

I'm a huge fan of criminal minds and when I watched this episode, I was morally at an impasse. I found it difficult to want him convicted when he had zero recollection about anything he had done, but I wanted him to pay for the murders he committed. I asked myself if you could convict someone who wasn't at all like the person who murdered them. Would it be like convicting someone who didn't commit the crime? Would it be justifiable? But when he remembers what he did and he goes to his first body, I kinda felt bad for the guy. But it wasn't like it horrified him so I still don't know how to feel

@Kenzie Britton I've never tought about this. I am not a lawyer, but I'm gonna tell you what I think about punishment: it should be made very clear for the person who is being punished that they did something wrong and because of that they are subject to imprisonment or solitary confinement or ... well whatever the penalty is.
Now that I read about this I am thinking that maybe, just maybe, terrible criminals should not receive death penalties. Or at least, they should be taken out of jail when they are mentally uncapable of undertanding their situation. The thing is I don't know if I would be ok with a rapist or a child murderer being well taken care of when they get old with the money that I pay in taxes.

It's very depressing that the most critical jobs in our world today are incredibly underpaid. We need people fighting for the rights of other humans, for the environment, for the voices that go unheard. People fighting for those important things should be paid fairly. Corporations shouldn't be able to have the upper hand all the time just because they can afford to shell out more money for a more experienced legal team. It's completely unfair.

Oh, plus law school's free. The flipside is that it's *really* hard to get into - only 5% of applicants are accepted each year, and only a minority of successful applicants was applying for the first time.

    • @johannesmajamaki2626
      @johannesmajamaki2626 4 ปีที่แล้ว +41

@@JukaDominator the arbitrary rationing is not a cost saving measure. It's because of a century of lobbying by the legal profession :D. Every time anyone proposes or demands the intake be increased, everyone gets up in arms about it. Other university fields are substantially less "rationed".
As to the freeness - obviously you are right over all. I am not pretending we don't pay for it in high income taxes, and I actually recognise that in the current US political climate this may be an important thing to remind people of. The effective tax rate can reach 2/3rds of your income, which is pretty brutal. A large welfare state absolutely has its perks and I broadly support it, but in the clamour to establish one in the United States it is sometimes forgotten or understated that it does, in fact, cost money - not just to some abstract group of ultra rich people, but to you. It may be worth it, but it isn't free or even cheap.
What I meant by it, more, is that by not having a 300k cost attached, law school isn't more expensive to you than other options, so this is not a consideration when applying.

    • @JukaDominator
      @JukaDominator 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

@@johannesmajamaki2626 which, in turn, means you have arbitrary ratonings instead of a proper distribution. In your case, they're shrinking the lawyers to raise their own salaries (this also happens where I live, which isn't the US), something doctors also do in the US.
