Not most, all. Good music as pop music is basically dead at least a couple of decades ago. And to compare any popular number of 2023 to this masterpiece is out of question.
I was 15 when it came out - i thought having wondrous music like this was 'normal'. With age comes perspective and i see how lucky i was. Musically the 70's was a dazzling age!
I was 15 as well when this came out. Like you, I thought amazing music was normal, as there were so many fantastic bands making fantastic music back then. now I realize how fortunate I was to have witnessed some of the greatest bands in history. Steely Dan has a place at the top of that list.
1974 I was 18 years old what a wonderful time to be that age at that time . My kids and grandkids will never know the freedom and the best music to have ever been made !

It was magical wasn't it?? The left over hippie vibe that we kept alive, the music, the great drugs I will admit, and just the fun and the freedom and the peaceful feeling at least I always felt around people.

I tried to play this on piano for my mom, I think she finally liked it....it is a major not minor (chords and 7ths and 8ths major 9ths etc) composition...with classical intentions..these guys made a classic with simple stuff
Spot on Joe! What a shame that few if any bands put so much detail into their work today like Steely Dan. If they do exist they won't get a contract because record co.'s want simplistic garbage for the masses instead of creativity and complexity of music and lyrics. Shame.

You've got exceptionally good taste. ❤ There was so much great music being played in the 60s, but the 70s is the standout decade for me. In the 80s I discovered jazz, but I still listen to my 70s recordings regularly. This is my favourite Steely Dan song. 😊
I’m an avid listener of Steely Dan’s music, at 67 years old I still think that they were and are one of the greatest bands ever. Harmonies and the sheer musicality with superb musicians makes this band one of the best.
This band is timeless, and yes I'm still listening to this beautiful melody nearly 50 years later. Still sounds as fresh as the first listening. The tone of this guy's young voice is so appealing. Just sums up the yearning and hopes that follow ypu throughout your life. Beautiful. The guitar lead is so part of the whole soul of this number. Never tire of it. Thanks for loading it.
As a child of the 70s I am transported back in time. Shopping at TG&Y, conleys, ben franklin Woolworths, pop in glass bottles, huffy bicycle les, 8 tracks, should I go on? Loved the 70s. Miss them everyday!!!

Celebrating 49 years after the best year of my life 1974. What a year, what great memories. I was 20yrs old, best cars, best music, best girls I ever met including my wife, best everything. I will never fotget 74.
When I had this album I was young, healthy, fit and happy. Now I'm old, not too healthy, fat and not particularly happy. But this music can make me feel good, even if it's only for a while. I feel sorry for the kids today, and in fact any that have grown up listening to the drivel that's been touted and music since the mid to late 80's. This band was wonderful, as were most of their compatriots of the era. I am so glad I was born in 1960 so I could grow up enjoying this.

I was born in 1955, yes I'm old too, but changed my life with improved diet (incl no sugar !), some exercise and ditched unecessary meds. Lost weight and not fat anymore. Feeling truly great. Luckily (widower of 7 yrs) and love to cook and even launder by hand: simple tasks, carried out well, useful time fillers. Get some random charity shop books, they can provide new insights. I also learned to write in other languages, again a window into other worlds so to speak. Lifes a bowl of shit, its easy to rise above it ...

As a kid I had what school officials called “pacing problems.” Just rocking back and forth and walking back n forth. I became an attorney. I also taught school myself. But I remember when I was at my worst as a kid, I had an astute teacher that gave me musical therapy and I was introduced to the symmetrically beautiful composition of Steely Dan as I “walked it off”. The Dan is one of those bands whose sound is absolutely UNMISTAKABLE. Complex and yet easily enjoyed. There will never be another. 63 here and still a big fan of THE DAN.
That guitar solo by Jeff "Skunk" Baxter so impressed me as a 14 year old kid in 1974, and still does now at 64 in 2024. 50 years later it's still a treasure of musical art. We had such great music to grow up to!
Fun fact-skunk Baxter is a largely self taught rocket scientist who did trajectory calculations for nasa. No shit, right? Edit- had the details wrong. He testified for a congressional committee and consulted with the pentagon on missile defense technology. My bad.
This album lived on the turntable in an apartment in London where the curtains rarely opened , I think I’m one of the only ones still alive out of all those lost souls , I thought I’d listen to see what memories it brought back , and I’m sitting here at 71 wiping away tears ,,music is powerful

I hear this and am transported back to age 16 summer of 1975; visiting family in the Hollywood Hills of California, laying on their deck suntanning with radio on & hearing this song for 1st time. Entrancing and always pulls me back to feeling young and so carefree, the warmth of the sun with the white Hollywood sign in the distance…glory days~🌸

Fleetwood Mac band was on the plane too, didn’t realize who they were until ‘77 Rumours came out. My relatives took us sightseeing everywhere, oldest brother Robert-age 23 was in the Air Force in Nevada. He drove down in his topless jeep & took me to see Jaws movie, and Santa Monica Pier to see the ocean for 1st time eeek haha, I was kinda scared but got in knee deep. The Griffith Observatory, J Paul Getty Museum, baseball game @ Dodgers Stadium were highlights too. I wish I had my great aunt & uncles Hollywood address, as I want to see what the house & surroundings look like now. I remember homes being built below theirs because I had the “hots” for one of the construction framers who was tan-muscular & shirtless. My Great Aunt told me “he looks thirsty, you should take him something to drink”. I was too shy but looking back, I wish I would have! haha.

This was a great song back in 1974. I too was a teenager, a little different I was 19 yrs old in the United States Marine Corps. I was getting ready to deploy to Okinawa when this was a hit. Sad time for me had to say goodbye to my cute girl friend. After 2 months on Okinawa she mailed me the dreaded "Dear John Letter" broke my heart.

My favorite Steely Dan song and one of my all time favorite songs ever! My dad worked for American Airlines, and I can remember hearing this song on the car radio one day in 1974 when he was driving me to work with him at Tulsa M&E.
My mother forced me to take piano lessons, and I must admit I got pretty good with the classics, but Bach got boring and I wanted to play anything by Steely Dan, so I attempted to play the songs by ear. Mom surprised me one day with sheet music, and to this day I still have it. Donald and Walter have been around in my life for as far back as I can remember, and I will never forget how their music soothed me.
2021. Still sounds fresh as ever! Iconic band with great chemistry between Fagen and Becker (RIP)- interesting music and unparalleled song writing chops- the changes, the cool piano riff, the bossa nova bass line opener, harmonies, lyrics. I shall never tire of this.

I love turning the younger students on to this great music. We are generally asked to use 'client preferred music' when providing music therapy interventions. It seems Steely Dan is loved by all ages, once folks are exposed to their musical genius. The way they fused genres- rock, jazz and pop (think the #11 hit tune, 'Peg', and how wildly popular it was back in 1978), I honestly think Steely Dan is one of the most sophisticated groups to ever exist. They are truly one of a kind.
This song brings back so many good memories. I asked a waitress named Vicky on my first date with her while this song was playing in a restaurant in Chicago. Those were the happy days.

This is what has been lost with the Classic Rock Era; it wasn't just Zeppelin and Floyd and the Stones and the Beatles; it was Steely Dan and Yes and Savoy Brown and you can run the list for a quarter mile and not repeat yourself. Meanwhile Classic Rock stations of today's radio make it all seem like what we all despised in the day, top 40. RIP Walter. RIP Classic Rock, one more time.

I wasn't even born when this song came out. I would come along a few years later. I came of age in the 1990s, which meant of course that I wasn't supposed to like this stuff. You know because of "grunge" and "alternative rock" and besides it was what my dad listened to. But I love Steely Dan and this song is wonderful.

I've seen these guys twice in the last 5 years. If you have a bucket list, seeing The Dan before they stop touring should be on it. One of the most insanely talented group of musicians and background singers you will ever see live.

Agree with all on this thread. As a recreational singer songwriter I learn all the time from SD but I still just enjoy the feelings I get from every song (bar Riki if I’m honest). But when I need an emo change I’ll go to JJCale. Complete turnaround. I luv him and learn to take it easy. That’s about it I think ...
Came to the U.S. at the age of 13 years, so i grew up listening to all this bands, and it was awesome to have grown listening to not only rock but all different kinds of music by different bands, and listening to Steely Dan just makes me feel like a kid and enjoy all those sounds.
Steely Dan songs are most often a work of art. Like a painting hanging on the wall, each time one revisits there is another insight, another feeling, another twist of interpretation - totally unique, very creative, timeless and inimitable.

I had just graduated and was.18 when 18 was everything. This song was floating thru the smoke as I sat in my car at 3 am one warm summer night listening to the radio. I'd come home after having breakfast night capping a great time at the clubs with all my friends. Freaking glorious. Not a care in the world. I wanted to be 18 forever and I didn"t want that night to end. It couldn't get better than that and it never did. None of the kids today will feel as I did that night. The world won"t let you carry on the way we did at that age. The kid in you at 18 is long gone at 21.

I saw Steely Dan live at The Music Hall in Houston, TX in 1973. I was only 18 years old. I remember it was an incredible performance. Their music is timeless.

Music usually touches the mind of the current generation as it is a direct reflection of they time in which they live. To us it may be offensive, because it does not reflect our current state. I’m sure our folks felt awful about this music.

Great rhythm, great musicians! The first time i played this music was on my 14th and i was knocked out....jazzy styles, fine voices(with Doobie influences)! I was 9 years old and blessed with parents that allowed me to grow up listening to the best. No country or bluegrass in my house growing up.
I was 17...senior year in high school. I still love listening to music from this time, probably even more today than back then.

We who grew up in the 70s will one day pass on but 'our' 70s music will live forever!

Celebrating 49 years after the best year of my life 1974. What a year, what great memories. I was 20yrs old, best cars, best music, best girls I ever met including my wife, best everything. I will never fotget 74.
When I had this album I was young, healthy, fit and happy.
Now I'm old, not too healthy, fat and not particularly happy.
But this music can make me feel good, even if it's only for a while. I feel sorry for the kids today, and in fact any that have grown up listening to the drivel that's been touted and music since the mid to late 80's. This band was wonderful, as were most of their compatriots of the era. I am so glad I was born in 1960 so I could grow up enjoying this.

I was born in 1955, yes I'm old too, but changed my life with improved diet (incl no sugar !), some exercise and ditched unecessary meds. Lost weight and not fat anymore. Feeling truly great.

Luckily (widower of 7 yrs) and love to cook and even launder by hand: simple tasks, carried out well, useful time fillers. Get some random charity shop books, they can provide new insights. I also learned to write in other languages, again a window into other worlds so to speak. Lifes a bowl of shit, its easy to rise above it ...

As a kid I had what school officials called “pacing problems.” Just rocking back and forth and walking back n forth. I became an attorney. I also taught school myself. But I remember when I was at my worst as a kid, I had an astute teacher that gave me musical therapy and I was introduced to the symmetrically beautiful composition of Steely Dan as I “walked it off”. That guitar solo by Jeff "Skunk" Baxter so impressed me as a 14 year old kid in 1974, and still does now at 64 in 2024. 50 years later it's still a treasure of musical art.

Entrancing and always pulls me back to feeling young and so carefree, the warmth of the sun with the white Hollywood sign in the distance…glory days~🌸

Fleetwood Mac band was on the plane too, didn’t realize who they were until ‘77 Rumours came out. My relatives took us sightseeing everywhere, oldest brother Robert-age 23 was in the Air Force in Nevada. He drove down in his topless jeep & took me to see Jaws movie, and Santa Monica Pier to see the ocean for 1st time eeek haha, I was kinda scared but got in knee deep. The Griffith Observatory, J Paul Getty Museum, baseball game @ Dodgers Stadium were highlights too. I wish I had my great aunt & uncles Hollywood address, as I want to see what the house & surroundings look like now. I remember homes being built below theirs because I had the “hots” for one of the construction framers who was tan-muscular & shirtless. My Great Aunt told me “he looks thirsty, you should take him something to drink”. I was too shy but looking back, I wish I would have! haha.

I remember coming back from surfing, driving in the fog with salt and sand drying on the car seat and my board and listening to this song for the first time. It was a perfect everyday kind of moment.

This was a great song back in 1974. I too was a teenager, a little different I was 19 yrs old in the United States Marine Corps. I was getting ready to deploy to Okinawa when this was a hit. Sad time for me had to say goodbye to my cute girl friend. After 2 months on Okinawa she mailed me the dreaded "Dear John Letter" broke my heart.
I know exactly what you mean. I think art (music in this case) is viewed as a luxury- when I see it(especially for youngsters) as a necessity.

My favorite Steely Dan song and one of my all time favorite songs ever! My dad worked for American Airlines, and I can remember hearing this song on the car radio one day in 1974 when he was driving me to work with him at Tulsa M&E.
I was listening to this 50 years ago in 1974 and still love listening to it now. It's a legendary song.
My mother forced me to take piano lessons, and I must admit I got pretty good with the classics, but Bach got boring and I wanted to play anything by Steely Dan, so I attempted to play the songs by ear. Mom surprised me one day with sheet music, and to this day I still have it. Donald and Walter have been around in my life for as far back as I can remember, and I will never forget how their music soothed me.

2021. Still sounds fresh as ever! Iconic band with great chemistry between Fagen and Becker (RIP)- interesting music and unparalleled song writing chops- the changes, the cool piano riff, the bossa nova bass line opener, harmonies, lyrics. I shall never tire of this.

@@charlesmaeger6162 thanks. I loved them from the time I was a kid and they influenced me greatly as a songwriter. I am a jazz musician and back in music school studying music therapy. I love turning the younger students on to this great music. We are generally asked to use
'client preferred music' when providing music therapy interventions. It seems Steely Dan is loved by all ages, once folks are exposed to their musical genius. The way they fused genres- rock, jazz and pop (think the #11 hit tune, 'Peg', and how wildly popular it was back in 1978), I honestly think Steely Dan is one of the most sophisticated groups to ever exist. They are truly one of a kind.

I wasn't even born when this song came out. I would come along a few years later. I came of age in the 1990s, which meant of course that I wasn't supposed to like this stuff. You know because of "grunge" and "alternative rock" and besides it was what my dad listened to.
But I love Steely Dan and this song is wonderful.

I've seen these guys twice in the last 5 years. If you have a bucket list, seeing The Dan before they stop touring should be on it. One of the most insanely talented group of musicians and background singers you will ever see live.

But when I need an emo change I’ll go to JJCale. Complete turnaround. I luv him and learn to take it easy. That’s about it I think ...

Came to the U.S. at the age of 13 years, so i grew up listening to all this bands, and it was awesome to have grown listening to not only rock but all different kinds of music by different bands, and listening to Steely Dan just makes me feel like a kid and enjoy all those sounds.
Steely Dan songs are most often a work of art. Like a painting hanging on the wall, each time one revisits there is another insight, another feeling, another twist of interpretation - totally unique, very creative, timeless and inimitable.

I had just graduated and was.18 when 18 was everything. This song was floating thru the smoke as I sat in my car at 3 am one warm summer night listening to the radio. I'd come home after having breakfast night capping a great time at the clubs with all my friends. Freaking glorious. Not a care in the world. I wanted to be 18 forever and I didn"t want that night to end. It couldn't get better than that and it never did. None of the kids today will feel as I did that night. The world won"t let you carry on the way we did at that age. The kid in you at 18 is long gone at 21.

I saw Steely Dan live at The Music Hall in Houston, TX in 1973. I was only 18 years old. I remember it was an incredible performance. Their music is timeless.
