    How to place modulars in proximity to each other is such a niche subject. To make an entire 10 minute video about the concept as applied to a single set is absurd, which is why I never expected to love it so much. Hahahaha! Your content is refreshingly original. As strange as it might sound, between this and your FOMO video, I couldn't help but hit subscribe. 10/10

    This is my big gripe with the modular series in recent years. The first few sets (with the notable exception of the Palace Cinema) tended to have a colonial architecture style, and the buildings tended to fit together in any order. But more recent models have been getting brighter, more colourful, and less uniform in their design choices, which has made them much harder to place in a way that is aesthetically pleasing. I'd almost rather just make the buildings smaller or give them larger baseplates to make them detached!

    • @buildingtogether4171
      @buildingtogether4171  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It really is the curse of trying to best the previous modulars year in and year out. Not that the set designers feel that it's a competition (I wouldn't know), but there must be a lot of pressure to do something cool and exciting. I remember when the Diner came out and many fans didn't like it because it just didn't fit in their cities (color, style). By now, though, there have been a number of brightly-colored buildings that look decent (even really good!) next to it. So we keep buying them and the cycle repeats.

    I would put an alleyway to the left of the club, as most clubs in cities irl have an alleyway next to them for a fire escape or a staff entrance

    • @buildingtogether4171

      That's a good point. There's a little alley as past of the Sanctum Sanctorum, so if you don't want to go with a full 16-wide baseplate, you could go that route (if you have it).

    I have my jazz club to the right of the diner because I was convinced they would look good together when the club was first revealed. I do disagree a little with placing the jazz club by the bookshop, because I'm not sure you would want a loud jazz club next to a quiet bookshop but that's just what my brain immediately went to. Great video though!

      @@buildingtogether4171 Umm, suppose it depends on the perspective. From the street view the PR is on the left, but if you were in the Jazz Club the PR is to the right. Just think they work as a theme i.e. a French restaurant and than a Chic Jazz club.

    I totally agree with your top choice! Except my Palace Cinema and Green Grocer will be swapped, based on my shelf display. I do think the sand green of GG makes the Jazz Club pop a bit more, and like you said, having the two marquee buildings together makes sense. Thanks for your work on this!

    I own all “modern modulars” (this is Parisian Restaurant and newer) and I have a single street of 7 baseplates I can work with. In 2021 I had (IMO) the most beautiful row of buildings layout in regards to which modular fits next to which one. Back then I used 6,5 baseplates of width, as follows (from left to right):
    1) Downtown Diner
    2) 1/2 of bookshop (teal residential part)
    3) police station
    4) detective office
    5) assembly square
    6) 1/2 of bookshop (bookshop itself)
    7) Parisian Restaurant
    Unused buildings : (built but put into storage)
    * brick bank
    * corner garage
    As I said, that setup was just perfect. Even though I owned 2 corner buildings, I didn’t use them. IMO both the Diner and Parisian Restaurant work better if they are used as a “end of row” building (which is not the same as a corner building for a city grid instead of my “bookshelf single row”). The right side of Parisian Restaurant is so beautiful when that chimney is very visible.
    Even though that row is perfect, of course you want to display the latest and greatest as well. When the boutique hotel came out I removed the teal residential part of the bookshop (thank god the police station fits nice next to the diner as well) and thus went from 6,5 to 7 baseplates wide, which is absolutely the maximum I can do here :
    1) Downtown Diner
    2) police station
    3) detectives office
    4) assembly square
    5) 1/2 of bookshop (bookshop itself)
    6) Parisian Restaurant
    7) boutique hotel
    Unused buildings : (built but put into storage)
    * brick bank
    * corner garage
    * 1/2 of bookshop (teal residential part)
    Now the Parisian Restaurant wasn’t at the end of the row anymore but boutique hotel was next to it. These two together is still a great match with a decent view to the Parisian chimney and outdoor restaurant area in the backside. As a building the boutique hotel is a bit isolated (all other main buildings in the row are attached to each other) but it doesn’t bother me that much. Parisian Restaurant is also about the only building that fits great to the left of the boutique hotel IMO.
    Now for this year I only see 2 main options for me :
    1) Replace my beloved Parisian Restaurant with jazz club (at the exact same location it is now).
    2) Remove boutique hotel and put jazz club in between the bookshop and Parisian Restaurant (Parisian will become once again an “end of row” building.
    I don’t think I can see myself breaking up any of the other buildings’ chronology, the only thing I can maybe give a try is to insert the jazz club in between the diner and police station. But then for sure boutique hotel has to go to make room.
    Anyway that’s all theorycrafting for now. Each year when I finish building the new modular (and finish dusting off the existing ones) it’s a lot of fun to try out various things.

    • @buildingtogether4171
      @buildingtogether4171  ปีที่แล้ว

      What a great comment! I love the amount of thought put into this. The Downtown Diner on one end and the Parisian Restaurant on the other makes a lot of sense, given the buildings are a full 32-studs wide.
      Picking and choosing which modulars get to be displayed is tough! But you're right that it's fun to just try out a variety of options. Otherwise, you never know which looks best to you.

    Awesome video. I'm glad to see someone so the jazz club on the right side of the diner in a video that has been my ideal spot for the jazz club since it came out once I finish the ideas treehouse set I started recently. My corner straight corner option for the jazz club would be palace cinema jazz club and finally the art gallery side of the boutique hotel if I decide to do that since right now my city is a mess especially in my down town.

    • @buildingtogether4171

      That's not a bad way to go, if you don't mind the alleyway created by the hotel. Thanks for watching!

    I'm thinking I'm gonna have to mod the trellis from my Jazz Club. It's a cute little build, but I think removing the trellis opens up a lot of options for placement. I'm also thinking of having the Jazz Club next to the Daily Bugle as a Pizza shop on one side of the bugle and the donut shop (with the police station) on the opposite side of the Bugle, especially since both Pizza and Donuts are recurring elements in the Bugle

    • @buildingtogether4171
      @buildingtogether4171  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, that makes sense. I'm a bit hesitant to modify my modulars, but as my city develops, it will be easier to do so. I like the idea of the Bugle and Club next to one another - one day, I hope to get the Bugle!

    • @Robin0928
      @Robin0928 ปีที่แล้ว

      @buildingtogether4171 Bugle is an absolute beaut of a centerpiece for my little city street.
      My current layout is Hotel - Bugle - Police Station - Sanctum, with the Jazz Club planned between the Hotel and Bugle.
      I think modding modulars is a bit iffy in general, but I think flowing the Modular series with the Marvel Modulars does require a bit of modding.

    When I first saw jazz club it was an eye sore! Bold Clashing primaryish colours. I’m not a modular collector, i just pick up cheap Star Wars/city second hand sets for the kids but I’ve become a big Lego fan over the past few years whilst bargain hunting. I did manage to get assembly square for free in a bundle once I’d sold off the other sets and I was amazed how good Lego building had moved on since my barracuda pirate ship in 1989! However, The jazz club has really grown on me and being a piano player and jazz lover it’s one of the few sets that spoke to me, I fancied a one off blow out, so I got it! (as a second hand set on eBay for £140.) it will probably sit on its lonesome in a cubby hole on my ikea expedit shelf (with two dark alleyways either side, haha) but lucky me, the jazz club looks perfect placed to the left of the assembly square! Happy days!

    I love this kind of niche interest discussion! So few people can relate to the very specific kind of fun that comes from arranging the order of the modulars, so it's always great to find someone who can. After seeing this video, I'm pretty sure I'll go for Diner-Club-Parisian. The American late mid-century style of DD and JC mesh well together, and I love how the trellis complements the outside dining area of the PR. That leaves the problem of what to put on either side of that arrangement, though - the PR has a big open space to its right, and the DD to its left, and I usually deal with those spaces by putting them next to each other. Maybe I'll put the Hotel next to the PR, but that still leaves the problem with the DD.
    One thing that surprised me was the reason why you didn't like the Police Station next to the JC. For me, the ultimate synergy in modulars is the Bank-Police-Detective arrangement. All three buildings are thematically connected, and each of them contains multiple buildings of different sizes, so visually they almost look like a sprawling city all on their own. That also sacrifices the sand-green wing, but there's almost no arrangement where that can be avoided. Perhaps the DD or the BH, but I just think both of those work even worse than just hiding away the sand green wing.

    • @buildingtogether4171
      @buildingtogether4171  ปีที่แล้ว

      I really thought I'd like that Police Station and JC next to one another. Since I like the sand green portion of the former, I like being able to see it clearly on the street and it just got lost in the shuffle. Moving the JC to the other side is a bit better, though.

    been looking for a video like this ever since the jazz club was open for purchase. I wish you had given more close-up of the club paired with the downtown diner to its left because, personally, i don't think it looks that bad at all. Yeah, the trellis only has its foliage on the club's side of the connection, and the ends of the builds don't really line up with one another, but that doesn't seem to bother me that much.
    With mine already purchased, i can't wait to be able to connect it to my own diner!

    • @buildingtogether4171
      @buildingtogether4171  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a fair point - even if the end of the trellis doesn't line up, it can still work well. I think that's the case with the Parisian Restaurant, where the trellis adds to the ambiance of the outdoor eating area. However, with the apartment building of the Pet Shop, there isn't much room to maneuver on the sidewalk unless you make some modifications. It wouldn't be hard to mod it, though.

      I fully agree I think I even like more Jazz (left) and then Diner then Diner (on the left) and Jazz. I Think the first option goes fine with the yellow and the white from both buildings and I think the stair of the diner goes fine with the trellis. I like ! But maybe also the other way around that "contrast/explosion of colours" works good :-) This is why Lego is so fun !!!! :-) I am 51 and discussion this details ahahah 🙂

    Not a bad list of combinations. I personally think having two of any similarly colored buildings close together doesn’t really fit my vibe, so Fire Brigade, Cafe Corner, and Jazz Club will need to be kept separate. Also, I should think that having two food establishments next to each other doesn’t make much sense from an economic standpoint, and as a result, Jazz Club, Downtown Diner, and Parisian Restaurant will need to be kept separate. I’m certain I’ll figure something out though.
    Also, someone murdered Al the Barber, so it looks like Ace Brickman will have his hands full tonight. I hope that case has been solved by the time I’m posting this!

    I am more. Winter Village "builder" but I want / would like to start with modulars - maybe starting integrating them in my WV (please give me your suggestions....best ones in your opinion for that), and then of course having a "non-winter" city....I know I am very limited due to many modulars are not available anymore :( (well unless you someone pays a fortune for those - not may case since I cannot do that).
    But I liked this video the different combinations....I was thinking to start maybe with the bookshop for my purpose (easy to adapt to my WV) but not sure - let me know your thoughts ....

    • @buildingtogether4171

      Greetings from Cleveland, Ohio, USA! The Bookshop could adapt nicely to the WV sets, in part because of their size (they are a bit smaller than the typical modular). Also, being able to separate them into their own buildings helps provide flexibility in any city layout.
      If you have the money, I strongly recommend the Assembly Square. I think it's the best modular currently available and is going to retire soon (after all, it's been out for over 6 years). I'd be surprised if its price doesn't skyrocket once it hits the aftermarket. But if it's too expensive, the Bookshop is a versatile alternative.

    I feel like Grocer is too big. I mean.. its bigger then Emporium! I think they need to remake it - make it the size of other similar houses and add interiors.

    Nice video. I’m just not thrilled with this set. I wanna see how people mod it and maybe I’ll build one of those

      Thanks! I would definitely mod the first (ground) floor interior. The stage is too small. Also, I can't say I love the greenhouse on the top, but the pizzeria is really short without it.

      @@buildingtogether4171 I assume someone will make a larger one. I’m building a double police station now I found on rebrickable, it’s a big improvement on the original. But it gets expensive ha

      @@dereklee7009 you can make first floor extend (four studs) at the back to make big stage with piano. Ps. Light set of LMB is great see vid.

    I love these so I brought them all off Aliexpress for under 600 NZ dollars yeah they were fake but there is no way I’m gonna fork out hundreds if not thousands in cash on plastic. Plus if your a casual you wouldn’t know only snobby collectors/influencers would and at the end of the day who gives a fuck.
