That's the best integration of base plate-based buildings with the new road plates I've seen so far. And it works just the same for plate-based buildings from Creator and City sets. Very well done!
You've done a much better job of showing the versatility and attributes of the new road plate system than the marketing team at LEGO. Even with their missed opportunity of how the were incorporated into the sets that they introduced that included them! I was not a fan of them but am now have had a change of heart. I originally didn't like the new road plates, worried about integration of modulars, city buildings & my MOCs. Now I see that the system can be easily edited, it looks beautiful!

Yes, it's the same spacing as all of my raised areas like the Marina. I was frustrated no one had picked up on it so I bought some new roads just to share this with the world, haha!
Right!! I did a video demonstrating the base plate on top of a regular plate for the new road plates, last week of December right before they went on sale. However I breezed over it so quickly due to: A. I assumed everybody ALREADY knew! and B. I was cramming other content into the same video and it was a looong video. In the weeks that followed I was stunned at how popular lego channels just didn't grasp the baseplate stackage and trip over themselves trying to figure it out. Can't beat RHB's super clean, polished, straight-to-the-point and fun demonstration! Loved it!

3 weeks ago I discovered this video, and indeed this channel, when I learned LEGO introduced these new road plates. After this I got interested and watched the MOC playlist for the fast food corner. And today (3 weeks later), I reached this video again through watching the complete journey playlist (so over halfway!)! In that time, I dug up my 30 year old LEGO, rebuilt the first 'big' set I got for my 7 birthday 28 years ago (Pirate Forbidden Island 6270), created a small MOC myself (a Japanese style vending machine) and ordered the needed bricks on Bricklink, as well as a big modular. I guess I'm back into LEGO, haha! Thanks Robin!
This is really great. I’d recommend checking Jang’s as well as both of you gave great solutions to these new plates! I would love to see eventually convert your city to these over a long period of time as they offer a lot more customization than the baseplates.
I really like this new system better for the reasons you've covered in the video. To me it looks more realistic than the old 1980's plate system I had in the 1980's.
It's more versatile but also more costly and more complicated. I still use old style baseplates for my city because they have actual curved corners and are a bit wider but... for less money!
I’m not quiet convinced to switch to the new road system when I look at the cost of the new road system and the added cost of having to use more plates to elevate the buildings and to make the road wider to accommodate most vehicles. But it looks like a great solution for the new road system. Thanks for the tutorial. Happy Building.
I love this a lot and agree that the elevation between street level and first floor level of the buildings are THE takeaways from this system. It looks really nice, in fact a huge improvement over the normally flat landscape. The ability to add street level drains as well as drop the crosswalks to street level is just cool! @@RobinHoodBricks I had decided to use the after market base plates that were 1 plate thick to build my modulars on and just could not wrap mu head around how to adapt your system to the curbs, but it turned out really quite easy. Now I can use your system to adapt those road bases to either base plate style. Thank you again for putting this out there.
I love your vision about using baseplates on top of plates that translates in 2 plates. Haven't seen anybody translate it that way and was wondering why. Luckily the "master" of baseplates on plates was the one to tell the world!
Great effort - and great solution to the new road plates... but as i've said on other TH-cam channels, the fact that you have to come up with solution tells you that they are not really fit for purpose. The curved curb looks great, but for me, two plates high is too high for paving - compared to a minifigure that is effectively a knee high curb... also, can't agree it's cost effective - what is it, £25 for a a set, which to make wide enough you need to double up, then add the cost of plates to raise everything to the right level... that's quite an expense... but more than that, for me personally - they look ugly. I really don't like the patchwork of tiles you need to make them. Again, just me - if people like them, great, maybe i'll be able to pick up the proper road plates cheaper on the secondary market! haha
There was always going to be this awkward period when transitioning between the two systems, but if Lego are properly committed to this change I imagine compatibility between sets and roads will become more straightforward. The final straw/nail in the coffin will be if they move to this system for future creator expert (18+) modular releases...
I love this. That´s the essence of Lego, creativity. A lot of People were very negative about the new road system. But I think it looks much better and realistic with this idea. Thanks a lot for sharing.
I’m watching this in 2024 (three years late), but I absolutely love your design here. Well done! I’ve got a handful of sealed Modular Buildings and I’m about to start building my own Lego city street, so I’m looking at different ideas. I’ll probably go with MILS plates for sturdiness and flexibility (in terms of changing my layout), but you’ve given me a lot to think about. Thanks!
This way of using the road plates is fantastic! The Robin Hood system is the best system I have seen so far, and I think it is also great for smaller city's, and the customization options are endless! Good job Robin!😃
Hello Robin, fantastic update! Finally someone who comes up with great ideas on how to use the new road plates instead of just complaining for complaining. I have started using them in “problem areas” where I simply don’t have space to accommodate the 32x32 grid, like side alleys and semi pedestrian areas. I will certainly try your sidewalk system, love the ramps and sewerage. However, for more stability I fixed the road plates on 48x48 baseplates and moved the buildings on old brick plates which are 3 high - so that should work with your system. It also resolved an issue I had with a railroad crossing... Will post some pictures on Instagram when time permits. As always, thank you for your inspiration!
Hi Alex. Yes, a pedestrian area is another great use for them. People moan but with time great systems will be developed. At least street features can be added IN the streets now!

The Robin hood bricks system has made me love the new system even more than I already did and is X100 better than the old system as it looks cleaner and more realistic plus it can use up those random old plates from our collection that we have no idea what to do with I gonna try and use this awesome system in my city thank you so much Robin hood bricks.

I love the new road plates and the ideas you’ve come up with have elevated my love even higher. I think this 15 minute video will help to dispel the new road plate haters and their short sightedness.
6:36 A suggestion: You could have made a one stud wide "kerbstone" of a different color indicating a different material and creating a contrast to the sidewalk. The easiest way would probably be to do a two studs wide extension, using a plate of the intended color, and then lining that with one stud wide smooth plates.
Even though I don't have a city, I'm starting to change my mind about them. It's all about adapting or dying. You've managed to make these road sets seem more appealing.
An old video that's been incredibly helpful to me today. I'd been thinking about using MILS plates for my KALLAX shelf Lego city, which I've recently started, but have realized from watching your video that that's probably overkill with my limited space. Your system will do just fine for my mighty metropolis, which so far consists of a log cabin and a tiny rustic cottage. Thanks! (Oh. Wait. I mustn't forget my travel trailer.)
I first was extremely sceptical of these new road plate systems. I’m not a Lego city builder, but I didn’t see how they could work. But since watching this video and a video by Jangbricks , i realise the seemingly endless options for the new road system. They definitely seem more in line with Lego’s ethos, especially for play. I also think, as pointed out by Jangbricks, make it so much easier to make bridges and raised roadways.
Hey Robin, I’m super glad you’re using these road plates. They look fantastic especially in your city. I’m not sure why a handful of lego fans don’t like them. Personally I think they’re more realistic and more versatile than the ones we’ve had for over a decade now. Keep up the great work!
Nice one Robin! If you're going to do what every one here is suggesting, whe'll all have Bricknottingham vids for probably the rest of our lives! Now, just another idea I had seeing you do all this, just for all the enthousiasts out there in the world that would like to start using those plates: If you use the 'wide lanes' (a complete width per lane), you can even add some pavement or greenery in between, connected on top of studded connector plates. Could be nice for a boulevard or something...
I'm not a fan of these new road plates as sold by Lego, but you've turned them into something beautiful here- I wish they'd been showcased like this from the beginning!
If I were starting now I'd use the new ones definitely. They are so flexible now for side streets, parking bays, different numbers of lanes, crossings where you want them. I like it!
love this video, two observations. The road is dark grey and the sidewalk tiles on modular building are dark grey. Now I need to change out the sidewalk to light grey to have the contrast. Secret ways that lego get you to buy more legos.
Very well thought through. I think this is the first video I watched and think these new plates are actually a better solution. Still spendy, but very flexible.

Hi Robin, I love what you did with the new plates! I must admit, it still takes some getting used to having a sidewalk two plates high, but im very much impressed with the end result! We have a couple of the new sets, so i will again be experimenting with them going forward using some of this technique!
Well you could keep them one high but the plates under the modular would be loose and the connections between the baseplate and pavements would be weaker. Maybe try that!
These things may be more expensive than normal road baseplates, but the customization is staggering, just as it should be with Lego. I was hoping to make a Lego city one day, and I'll probably use these unless they come up with something better by then.
I have only recently got back into lego and have none of the older style road plates. So I am 100% signed up to making these new ones work and have been collecting a few sets as I go. Really like the double raiser approach detailed here although I was surprised by the "floating method" of connecting just the edges. The double road is an interesting idea, it does however eat space despite it looking and feeling cool! So thanks for the great guide and, as a fellow Brit with the name Robin, I feel it's appropriate I adopt this method :)
Great techniques here! Since these road segments accept studs on the bottom, they really lend themselves to being used for a raised highway. Haven't seen anyone do that yet, though.
Thank you very much for sharing the tip to improve the use of the new road system. I do understand the POTENTIAL significant improvement that they can offer; however it it just not an economical/viable option for most average collectors/builders. I always weigh it as buy pieces to improve the road or buy sets for the buildings...and usually the building/structure side wins. That being said, I think FOLs will still take away a few lessons from this vid and implement them in their city regardless of whether they use old or new road plates. It’s all a matter of adding small details to make a scene stand out. A “Do what you can with what you have” philosophy comes to mind. Stay safe everyone.
You could honestly do all sorts of crazy stuff with this. Streetside parking, tramway integration, level crossings, multi-level road systems like the ones in Chicago, etc.
You've done a fantastic job here. I like the curb you've implemented; it is smashing! However, I still much prefer the old style baseplates over this new style.
Lego still have a way to go with the new system, but I think this video shows a lot of possibilities that the old road plates didn't have. I think I will need to make some roads on the sub level of my city so I can use some of the techniques you show in this video. It looks really good with the high sidewalks and storm drains.
I hate to say it but robin has converted me I was a strong hater before hand and at the end of this video I am now very much supporting the new system so guess I’m going to sell my baseplates and buy the new ones

This is even greater than the System I thought of. Since by now i dont have enough Space to use a Full 32x32 for a Street i might stick with my Solution for now but if that changes sometimes i might actually use that System.
You can always use this system with one plate wide roads and then slightly expand the width of the single piece with an extra strip of tiles or even a azure bike lane!
Thank you for this video. Always good to see other people's ideas, and this is probably my favourite method of integration so far. I know you have said that you don't intend to replace the existing road plates in your city, but would you use them in any as-yet undeveloped areas? My biggest gripe With the new road plate system is actually the yellow speed bumps. The bumps don’t seem to be designed with the low clearance city cars in mind which is really annoying, especially when you consider they come together such as the Shopping Street set.
I have the old baseplates for the undeveloped areas so probably not. I hate those yellow speed bumps. They are kinda recessed too but if you raise them they'll ground a car!
This looks great, I had pretty much written off the new road plate system, but after watching this, I might be sold as I love the raised footpaths with the more life like options for gutter, drains, speed bumps etc etc. I’m not converting yet as I bought all the road plates I could get my hands on over the last few months.
Have to say I'm not a huge fan of these baseplates due to their overall cost, but they are definitely more customisable as you've proved here!

It's the same setup I did in my marina, boardwalk, harbour etc but adapted for this. That's why I made the video to show the world!

This would actually give you the opportunity to make a decent corner using 45 degree plates and tiles on a double width road, nice work mate.

Even though I don't have a city, I'm starting to change my mind about them. It's all about adapting or dying. You've managed to make these road sets seem more appealing.

An old video that's been incredibly helpful to me today. I'd been thinking about using MILS plates for my KALLAX shelf Lego city, which I've recently started, but have realized from watching your video that that's probably overkill with my limited space. Your system will do just fine for my mighty metropolis, which so far consists of a log cabin and a tiny rustic cottage. Thanks! (Oh. Wait. I mustn't forget my travel trailer.)

I first was extremely sceptical of these new road plate systems. I’m not a Lego city builder, but I didn’t see how they could work. But since watching this video and a video by Jangbricks , i realise the seemingly endless options for the new road system. They definitely seem more in line with Lego’s ethos, especially for play. I also think, as pointed out by Jangbricks, make it so much easier to make bridges and raised roadways.
Yes, there is a lot to be said for them but they will certainly not be right for all situations. Cost being a major factor too!

Personally I think they’re more realistic and more versatile than the ones we’ve had for over a decade now.

Now, just another idea I had seeing you do all this, just for all the enthousiasts out there in the world that would like to start using those plates:
If you use the 'wide lanes' (a complete width per lane), you can even add some pavement or greenery in between, connected on top of studded connector plates.
Could be nice for a boulevard or something...
Yes, that was on my list for a potential second part. Central reservation, crossing islands, greenery etc!
I'm not a fan of these new road plates as sold by Lego, but you've turned them into something beautiful here- I wish they'd been showcased like this from the beginning!

Great video - starting to feel more comfortable starting my first city where I'm almost certainly going to have to use the new road plates.
If I were starting now I'd use the new ones definitely. They are so flexible now for side streets, parking bays, different numbers of lanes, crossings where you want them. I like it!

love this video, two observations. The road is dark grey and the sidewalk tiles on modular building are dark grey. Now I need to change out the sidewalk to light grey to have the contrast. Secret ways that lego get you to buy more legos.

I love what you did with the new plates! I must admit, it still takes some getting used to having a sidewalk two plates high, but im very much impressed with the end result! We have a couple of the new sets, so i will again be experimenting with them going forward using some of this technique!
Well you could keep them one high but the plates under the modular would be loose and the connections between the baseplate and pavements would be weaker. Maybe try that!
These things may be more expensive than normal road baseplates, but the customization is staggering, just as it should be with Lego. I was hoping to make a Lego city one day, and I'll probably use these unless they come up with something better by then.
Yes customisation is much better at the cost of looking a little worse with the patchwork look!

I have only recently got back into lego and have none of the older style road plates. So I am 100% signed up to making these new ones work and have been collecting a few sets as I go. Really like the double raiser approach detailed here although I was surprised by the "floating method" of connecting just the edges. The double road is an interesting idea, it does however eat space despite it looking and feeling cool! So thanks for the great guide and, as a fellow Brit with the name Robin, I feel it's appropriate I adopt this method :)
A double road is just the same width as an old baseplate. You could create a load of cool parking bays in the extra road space though!

Great techniques here! Since these road segments accept studs on the bottom, they really lend themselves to being used for a raised highway. Haven't seen anyone do that yet, though.

Thank you very much for sharing the tip to improve the use of the new road system. I do understand the POTENTIAL significant improvement that they can offer; however it it just not an economical/viable option for most average collectors/builders. I always weigh it as buy pieces to improve the road or buy sets for the buildings...and usually the building/structure side wins. That being said, I think FOLs will still take away a few lessons from this vid and implement them in their city regardless of whether they use old or new road plates. It’s all a matter of adding small details to make a scene stand out. A “Do what you can with what you have” philosophy comes to mind. Stay safe everyone.
I agree. It's not for me either. For a smaller scene, like the thumbnail, I think it looks great though!

You could honestly do all sorts of crazy stuff with this. Streetside parking, tramway integration, level crossings, multi-level road systems like the ones in Chicago, etc.
You've done a fantastic job here. I like the curb you've implemented; it is smashing! However, I still much prefer the old style baseplates over this new style.

Lego still have a way to go with the new system, but I think this video shows a lot of possibilities that the old road plates didn't have. I think I will need to make some roads on the sub level of my city so I can use some of the techniques you show in this video. It looks really good with the high sidewalks and storm drains.

love the plates! wait till you intergrate them with rail system! I had to completely redo my two table layout! hours of fun!
Well that's easily done with a few more tiles but it's not a technique I use in my city!
I hate to say it but robin has converted me I was a strong hater before hand and at the end of this video I am now very much supporting the new system so guess I’m going to sell my baseplates and buy the new ones

This is even greater than the System I thought of. Since by now i dont have enough Space to use a Full 32x32 for a Street i might stick with my Solution for now but if that changes sometimes i might actually use that System.
You can always use this system with one plate wide roads and then slightly expand the width of the single piece with an extra strip of tiles or even a azure bike lane!
Thank you for this video. Always good to see other people's ideas, and this is probably my favourite method of integration so far. I know you have said that you don't intend to replace the existing road plates in your city, but would you use them in any as-yet undeveloped areas?
My biggest gripe With the new road plate system is actually the yellow speed bumps. The bumps don’t seem to be designed with the low clearance city cars in mind which is really annoying, especially when you consider they come together such as the Shopping Street set.
I have the old baseplates for the undeveloped areas so probably not.
I hate those yellow speed bumps. They are kinda recessed too but if you raise them they'll ground a car!
This looks great, I had pretty much written off the new road plate system, but after watching this, I might be sold as I love the raised footpaths with the more life like options for gutter, drains, speed bumps etc etc. I’m not converting yet as I bought all the road plates I could get my hands on over the last few months.
They aren't perfect by any means but they do have some potential. Go for it!
