Took delivery of my Kona EV two weeks ago and absolutely love it. It’s without a doubt the nicest car I have ever driven 👍🏻❤️

I have one in Canada. Love the car, very spiffy. Paid $45000 but the average price for a new car here is $36000. So with that in prospective it is not such a crazy price. I also got a $5000 rebate from the government. The car is a joy to drive especially past the gas stations. There is practically no maintenance. no oil changes, tailpipes that fall off, valve adjustments or any troubles associated with ICE cars. The 410km range is plenty enough for all my driving and I live in the country. EV's are the best. I will never go back to a gas car.

I am driving this car now for 5.000 km. To me it is near perfect: very efficient, good range, perfect sound system. The price is OK taking into account the low running costs. And..... you can actually buy it!

Mine just hits its first birthday ;)...really really love it...driving pleasure included....Cruise control along 401 to Toronto.....EV chart says 1800CAD in charging and service for 20K kms. Ididn't even spent 1400CAD...most of the time in 400W rapid charger......fully followed service interval at Hyundai dealer.....IMPRESSED?...Wait...summer gave 445km and winter 320km...Not bad at all ...I drove from Montréal to Niagara Falls few days after purchasing but was a bit scared of not getting enough charge, no matter Hyundai car assistance is here :) , I stopped 3-4 times to a fast charge.....On the way back ..peace of mind, I stopped only 2 places to recharge and relax........Goodbye gas...

Of course, I receive it in February in Canada in the middle of the winter...

The time has come to replace our 5 year old Prius so... We have PV panels on the roof and Christine - the driver - is quite hard of hearing so a quiet electric car with good range fitted the bill. We poured over many specifications and TH-cam tests but in the end we came down to the Kona and the e-Niro. We tried the Kona first but were put off by the poor rear leg room and the fact that it was notably noisier than the Prius. On Friday we tried the Niro and were sold on it. The car was very similar to the Kona but it was quieter and had more rear leg room and was a nice vehicle to be in. We have ordered one and hope to get it in August.

We have a 64kWh Kona since 1st July 2019, it's a good all round car which we use daily. The public charging infrastructure is still very much in its infancy and I often feel like an early adopter, having to possess multiple phone apps, multiple charge cards just to get a charge. We also have a Model 3, for which the Tesla Supercharging network is superior in every way; faster, more abundant, reliable and easy to use. The Kona is a joy to drive and live with. It does not have the refinement of the Model 3, but then Hyundai didn't start with a plain sheet of paper. They adapted a car that was already on the production line with diesel and petrol engines and turned it into an EV variant. They have done a great job. However, there is always going to be compromises with this approach.

  • @Neofolis

I was recently in the market to replace my old car and was looking at ICE vehicles at around £12,000. It then occurred to me that if I went electric, I would save most of the £300 per month I spend on fuel as well as reducing my tax and servicing costs. I added £17,000 on finance and bought a second hand Kona electric. My outgoings will remain about the same and whilst the cost of electricity is rising, it doesn't seem to be rising as quickly as petrol and diesel. Obviously, I can't tell for sure what will happen in the future, but given that electricity is the future of the car industry, it would seem likely to continue that way.
People who don't do the miles I do will not necessarily be able to finance a much higher cost vehicle, whilst retaining similar monthly outgoings, but for people who do less miles, there are cheaper, lower range options they could choose and probably get a similar result.

I regularly see a white coloured one on my route to work, looks OK to me, however biggest issue is cost, followed by finding somewhere at home to charge it, unless you have somewhere to charge it regularly like a driveway or garage next to the house, it's a non starter for a lot of people.

"You can feet a third person into the middle seat", realy ?
The Kona is a very good EV but I have 3 children and I have tested the Kona one year ago before confirming my Tesla model 3, the middle seat was *very uncomfortable* even for a 11 years child. She was so in pain that I had to go back to the dealer before the scheduled time. The rear seats are about the size of a Zoé but quite less comfortable. So please, it is a very good EV but for a family of 3 or 4. BTW, if you chose the 64 kWh version, I would advise to check if the ground clearance is enough for where you leave since if I remember well the battery is lower than the body of the car (but is was the 2019 version, it may have changed).

    • @0hypnotoad0
      @0hypnotoad0 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Ground clearance is 6.3 inches on the 64 kwh. That's not exactly high, but it's not low either.

the only problem with it is that it has only a 7 kW onboard charger - correct me if I'm wrong. Now, where I live, there ain't many fast DC chargers, so if I'm traveling far, 500 miles, and the fast charger is occupied then I plug it into the 22 kW charger, and I only get 7 kw?? To my knowledge only the Renault Zoe and Tesla Model S have 22 kW onboard charger. If i'm at home, and want to charge and go on a 100 mile trip, I have to wait like 3-4 hours, plugged into the 22 kW home charger. With renault zoe charging at 22 kW I can be on my way 1.5 hours of charging.
If Renault managed to put a 22 kw onboard charger, why can't other ones???

EVs are for the city, not highways, but every automobile journalist takes them on long range test. I prefer when a car is easy to use and has buttons, and the interiours is easy to understand and use even when I drive, not a big touchscreen with a menu for a menu for an under menu that has your normal everyday controls like volume control and airconditon. Hate it when they try to make your car be "easy to use like your smartphone" when we all know that using the smartphone while driving is dangerous and can cause accidents

I agree , but will not purchase one ( yet ) . From what I know , the I3 will be out of production soon and will make way for e-versions of the X3 and comparing it to the model 3 ; the Kona has a better chance in sales indeed . A more well known and less minimalistic approach on the interior combined with a cross-over SUV type of look . Love the red piping btw !

Rebecca, your bling really blings on the mic!
Regarding the Kona, it really is a nice car. I think it is the very first "normal" electric car, which is something I find necessary, and it is what I and most people want. I can't stand the i3, it is just horrible.
The Zoe is still expensive to buy (come on... 40k euros for a Clio?). The Zoe's interior is just awful and full of noise, cheaply made... Horrible. The Kona/Soul electrics are the very first "balanced" electric cars. And we needed that. Still too expensive though, but that's way with electric cars nowadays. I want one, but I am sill waiting for better prices and better charging infrastrucures. Also, all that exterior plastic will lose its color with ageing...

A series of fires prompted mass recalls of Hyundai's best-selling Kona EV in South Korea in October. In South Korea, Hyundai has recalled 25,564 Kona EVs built during September 2017 to March 2020 due to the risk of short circuit possibly caused by faulty manufacturing of its high-voltage battery cells.

At £35k after subsidised grants (why should the tax payers subsidise foreign car companies?), this small car will not be on the shopping list of the families with modest incomes.. Still at least £15k too expensive for what it offers.
Not having 4wd shows how these EVs get messy on the road with their instant torque..
Range better than most.. It'll find a market for middle class Thunberg types..
