I brought my Ping G2 (new in 2005) out of retirement a few years ago and am currently still using it. Had a few other drivers in the interim, but didn't like them as well and don't want to buy at today's prices. Still got the original Grafalloy Blue shaft in it and performs well enough for my 71 year old swing.
In 2003 the Ping G2 with pro launch blue shaft was the business, it kicked my Titleist 975D straight out of the bag which had cost a small fortune in 1998 - still got both
Wow that's a blast from the past the G2 driver was my first metal wood had the G2 3 wood s59 irons and the G2 crazy E putter right set of clubs as I remember
I still have and play my G2 which I hit quite well and almost as far as my G425. It is one of the best drivers of its day and I will keep mine forever!!
Based on several old v new comparison videos the clubs don’t even add 1% each year or even .5% in most cases in terms of distance, yet we all keep shelling out $5-699 every other year. 😂
I gave my son my G2 Tour driver this year. I believe it is a 450cc. I’m in the states and someone I went to school with sold it at a charity auction as he had his tour card for a while and got it from Ping. Had a new shaft fitted for me, but still love that driver. Still looks great and when hit out of the screws, it can stay with the non LS or Triple 💎 models.
I just bought and customized a Taylormade 320Ti 9.5° driver. Cut the shaft down to mini driver length with a jumbo grip to counter the loss of swing weight. So far it's been pretty easy to hit, even with the lower loft
Good trip down memory lane. I think a lot of those earlier 460 cc heads had deeper faces. I recall having Biggest Big Bertha, Cobra FSpeed with the green NV shaft. Oddly enough I probably played my best golf with the much maligned Nike Machspeed SQ
How about the shot lengths as it's now more popular for the driver to be 45" + Longer? That makes a difference to distance but can also introduce accuracy i.e. less fairway finders.
I bought a Ping Ti SI driver new, one of the best drivers I owned. I use a Ping g30 which I also bought new. Now as a 71 year old and retired a new driver is out of reach.😢
I have a Taylormade R9 460 from 2009. I keep it at my place in Spain along with equally old irons. I must say, it easily matches my Callaway Rogue ST Max that I bought new a few years ago (for far too much money!). I’m seriously considering buying a R9 from eBay for my regular play in the UK. I’m not convinced that the developments over the past 15 years really help mid-handicappers like me.
I agree, I think there were great leaps in golf club technology and materials in the 90s that got more or less maxed out by the mid 2000s and improvements since then have been minimal.
G2 was offered in three heads 390 CC 400 cc and then Max 460 CC and then they had a special order 440 CC so the look of yours next to the pxg I'm comparing them now is the 400cc Drive ahead just to let you know
And I'm going to add I wish they still May drivers like that in three or four different sizes versus just calling one a tour that should be 420cc then they should have their standard at 4:45 CC and then they're Max at 460 CC my opinion you know it's the reason why More tour players hit a Max or if the standard pxg is due to the fact that if they're going to have a maximum size head might as well have maximum size forgiveness
You don't have to buy every year. If you are using a 10 plus year old driver, you can buy a 2022 or 2023 new for a fraction of the cost; which will give you 90-95% of the gains of a £600 new driver 12:09
I really enjoy the comparison I still have a g2 8.5 green and love it, but when doing these comparisons you must put the same shaft in both to make a true comparison.
I always find it annoying that James always seems to have the need to interrupt Chris’ videos. 🤷♂️ I think he’s just craving attention …. Let Chris have his moment.
Question: Would you give up 10% driving distance for 20% more drives in play? Answer: The marketing of golf companies has polluted the buying premise of regular golfers to sway opinion to answer “No”. World gone mad 😮
Got a G2 at a estate sale a month ago for $5.00. Love getting older clubs cheap and trying brands I didn't use back in the day

Interestingly, Higher than 1.5 smash factor with the PXG! Good stuff as always, Chris!

Love the retro review. Some people still game the G2. Changing something’s that work isn’t always the best.

It's pretty fun to get your old clubs out play with them every now and then, 😅
This was my first ever driver
I had the 3 wood too
Best alignment aid on the crown ever
The driver sounded full of energy 😊
I still have an original Big Bertha from '91 or '92. Its the size of a modern 3 wood.

I bought the G2 & didn't see point swapping to the G5 or G10, too similar I thought. Still have it now at home with the green aldila shaft

I still have my G2 that was given to me by Ping when I was working in the industry
Be interesting, if you could put the PXG shaft or something similar in the G2, wonder how much difference there would be then?
Was wondering what the numbers would be too.
Still love the Rapture. That thing was sweet!

Cant find any info on the titlest R9

@@CountMackula sorry - I meant Taylormade R9 460

Did I spot a Trust golf ball? Review coming soon or have I missed it? I recently bought some Bison X not used them yet though.
one of the most favorite drivers i ever had was the cleveland launcher when it first came out. maaaan, i used to hit THE CRAP outta that thing!
Me too, still a great club.
With the gold shaft!
@@miguelitoaniceto5882 yep.
Is that Robbo the Rotund in the background?
Is a driver alignment aid any use, when on the floor line up to 1/4 toe, then when I pick it up to ball height it’s in the middle of the crown
1979 Citation powerbilt laminate wooden driver
have a g10... be surprised if anything really was much better than it

The original GBB
Would love to see it up against the modern counterpart Chris. Are we being conned into buying modern equipment with only marginal gains?
i mean do you think 30 yards is a marginal gain lol?

@@TheVillest saw another comparison here there was only a 10 yards gain on their swing speed. That's marginal to me
@@SigmaJAD from what i saw the differences were 295-265/270ish between the two
Could that work better with shaft upgrade. Though awkward to change.

Love that you could hear JR in the background!

@@AnotherLostBallI actually like the interaction between the two channels. Obviously great friends and good to see.
Apologies for the typo that should have read 'shaft' not 'shot' - my bad😬
If you’re a hacker it doesn’t matter. If you’re a hcp below 10 you’ll lose 15-20 yards carry I think
