Good answer on optimum driver spin rate. One adder: Ping has some great charts on their website showing optimum launch and spin for both maximum carry and maximum total distance as a function of swing speed/ball speed.
I liked this video - thank you for fielding questions (even ones that may not be the most comfortable) and answering them. Hope you do more of these kinds of videos in the future!
On the Titleist driver fitting video. I had no issues with it. It was honest and truthful. A good fitting will have bad shots and should have bad shots in fact if the driver or whatever other club performs even with bad shots that's what you want have happen. I have experienced exactly what Rick was talking about with fitters being sales people and it's a horrible experience, so I am guarded too. Find your fitter before you get fitted and if your not happy with the fitting tell them. If they are worth anything they will book you in again for free until you get a good result.
Exactly, and I don't feel like the video was that bad at all. I had a similar experience where I was fitted into the mizuno iron and I just don't like the feel of it, the fitter can't seem to understand where I say I don't like the feel of mizuno
I didn’t think it was that bad either, but I also don’t think it was the video itself that people cared so much about, but more the fact it was removed and then never spoken about like it was a taboo subject. By Rick and his team doing that made it out to be a lot bigger than it needed to be. He summed it up perfectly in this video. It should have just been done on Rick’s first podcast back from holidays.
I didn’t get to see the fitting video so I can not comment on the content, I can say with out a doubt that I have been watching you for ever when you had your high handicap friend judging iron, Rob I think was his name, and you are the best on You Tube because of your character and honesty. Please keep up the great work. Looking back let’s see the impact you made with me. Ping G irons, because of Robs video, Ping 425 Max, yes still gaming it. Jumbo max small Grips, I like they don’t go left, and an order is in for the Tokoma 201 irons that will be arriving soon.
Here's an idea for a video talking about equipment. I'm 41 and during COVID having watched some of your golf bidder videos I decided to recreate my old Jr golf set from about 1998, and I love going out and using them occasionally on a social round and I think the 975 Titleist driver is still my favorite driver of all time. Why don't you do the same and get a 4 ball together and see the difference given the age of equipment, would be a really fun video.
Well done. It must be so terrifying, at times, putting yourself in front of public scrutiny all the time. Thank you continuing to entertain and dealing with negative backlash so professionally. I’m sure you wanted to say a lot more! Didn’t see the video myself so can’t comment.
My favorite irons all time were Ben Hogan APEX FTX (made by Callaway). Blades up to the 8 iron, then progressive cavity back up to 3i. My first round i shot a personal record at the time.
There’s a lot of grown men out there that are going to finally sleep easy tonight safe in the knowledge of why a TH-camr decided to delete a video they uploaded.
Grown men who support and are totally responsible for this guy's career playing golf for a living despite his unexceptional abilities. His supporters gave him negative feedback for his shit attitude and he responded, no need to insult the part of his fan base who is willing to hold him accountable when he needs it. And he clearly needed it.
Rick, after some reflection, seemed to welcome the feedback and has just addressed it. That's what businesses do with customers; listen to their customers and react accordingly. I think the issue here is your relationship with Rick Shiels Golf is parasocial. It's a business and we're customers. You don't know him. He's not a pal. You realise that, right?
My previous irons favorite were the TaylorMade Tp r9 just a beautiful iron and the gaping was superb. However my most Beloved set is my current set the TaylorMade P770s 2023 model. Absolutely beautiful and I'm playing the best golf of my life with them.😊
That’s some good honesty and good accountability. Didn’t need to do it but you did. As you say it’s not a good look for yourself as a personality, bad day at the office and in turn that puts a bit of cloud over titleist new product on one of the biggest golfing channels on TH-cam. Live and learn, ultimately the right move. If only all TH-camrs held themselves to this standard of professionalism.
Excited about the upcoming coming takomo review - just got a set of 101T’s and am really happy. Was hoping for a review from Rick before I committed, as he’s a great sounding board, but impatience won the day.
Well done Rick. I’ve really felt for you and your guys these last few weeks and for me this video was the perfect way to address & hopefully put an end to all the questions and speculation 👏
I'm sure I speak for many people who never give a like or a comment when I say we watch because of your great attitude. You have good days and bad days, but that's real. You say it all the time "Golfs a funny game." While so many comments that are critical or just nasty usually are made by people that for some reason think their Don Rickles or something. PS they are far from the legendary Don Rickles.
Love this video Rick. Dont think it should be a recurring video but definitely worth it to answer the obvious question regarding titleist. Love the honesty, all makes sense, fundamentally all for the greater good! Keep up the good work!
Get out of the comment section. Have someone else read them and brief you the high points. Understand that most people are just going to talk shit. Keep the great content coming and don’t sweat the haters.
I’ve been watching you for the last 4 years I believe. I honestly enjoyed watching your Titleist fitting video, 1. You’re serious about the equipment regardless of brand, 2. You showed a side that, let’s be honest, most of us have and 3. You’re an independent reviewer. Finally get to see Rick be picky, be serious and I want to see more and I’m sure others will. People need to stop being so sensitive, your doing your job, there is those of us that appreciate it. It gave me a better idea of how to approach a fitting and somethings to watch for also. So many of TH-cam reviewers say get fitted, but not a lot cover what to look for, how or what questions to ask, and how to prepare for one. I have enough of a hard time hitting with new people around, let alone be 1 on 1 with a person judging my swing to make sure he can help me get the right equipment.
Atta boy Rick. Two great things in this video: Takomo reviews incoming and you addressing the fitting video. Your explanation was great and it's awesome to see you taking accountability by even talking about it. Can't wait for the Takomo reviews!
I never actually seen the titleist video but certainly heard all the controversy. I am glad that you remain impartial when doing reviews and like you said, the channel was built on that trust. The titleist reps aren’t impartial and it’s hard to put your honest opinions across to the viewers when they are in the video too. Doesn’t sound to me like you were being rude. I’m sure you were just trying to protect yourself and the viewers from being misled. Keep up the good work from a fellow RS 👍🏻
Very happy to hear you address that video so we can all move past it and enjoy more content in the future! Hoping there’s something to replace break 75
Thank you for adressing the issue you explained it besutifully and gave good reasons for removal. I appreciate you taking time to do so. I hope to see more great content from you and your team in the future. Cheers!
I liked the fitting video as it seems many others did. I never got the impression that you were being rude or having a bad day. It just seemed like you knew what you were looking to get out of the fitting and kept things on track. I thought it was a great look behind the scenes.
Rick, I always come to you for unbiased equipment reviews. The Titleist video was different but what was the uproar all about? It's not all sunshine, people are people. As a consumer and past golf fitter I want an unvarnished review. The good & the bad mean something to me & it is what truly sets you apart. Keep up the world class reviews Rick.
I play a daily stableford game with a bunch of older club members throughout the week, and I’ve seen a couple who still game Ping Eye 2s from the 90s and do quite well with them. I don’t think they were getting a lot of check with their shots onto the greens, but they managed to make them work. As a broke college kid backs in the 90s, that was always my dream set, so that’d be my pick for favorite irons for nostalgia’s sake. As for the replacing of wedges, I replaced my last 58 degree in less than a year, but I play 250+ rounds of golf per year, and the 58 is the club I spend the most time with warming up prior to the round. I could definitely see the spin degradation over that time.
The Titleist fitting wasnt your best video, but i think you handled this very professionally and people in general have taken it way out of proportion. Looking forward to more videos Rick 👍
Completely agree about the Ping G irons, Rick. I got fitted for a set of G410s 4 years ago after a series of lessons and they're the best golf purchase I've made. Helped to get my handicap down from low 20s to 10. I'm probably due to upgrade them now but I'm not sure I can take them out of the bag!
Honestly surprised that you read the comments. I thought it was just your team who does this for you. Also surprised that it affects or affected you. I guess I had this idea that you’re just living the life when you are also the same as us, just better and richer😄 I do wish you’d bring back the break 75 videos. Either way, more power to you! 👏
Great video, while we as viewers were not owed an explanation for the Titleist video it was some great insight as to why it was taken down so thank you for that.
Rick, I did not see your Titleist video however I have watched a lot of TH-camrs get fitted by employees of a manufacturer. Their job is to maximize performance and sell clubs, so there is going to be some hype which can (and does) include excitement for an increase ball speed of 2mph, improved launch angle, etc. etc. These data are crucial for the fitter to maximize performance; however at the end of the fitting the question is how much closer to the green is the ball and at what cost? A year or so ago I saw an impressive, sophisticated fitting with a new $600-700 dollar driver, in the end the highest performing shaft gained less than 5 yards with an up charge of $700-800. I was impressed with the fitter he asked the client “you need to decide if the gained yardage is worth the expense? Rick, your objectivity is much appreciated.
I'm too old and set in my ways to have lessons now but I agree, Lessons first! then buy clubs. 2 years ago I bought a Callaway Rogue driver and 3 wood (£300 for both). Huge difference to distances from my old clubs but no difference to the direction the ball went often. I have only just replaced my old irons with a set of Callaway X Hot irons (5-9 +P &S for under £300) Again huge difference to distances but my golf score hasn't changed immediately. Lessons, lessons lessons. Oh, and thank you for putting the video thing to bed. 👏👏👏👏
In the process of getting new irons. Mine are Callaway Big Bertha from 2006. Still in good condition but after 18 years think reasonable time to upgrade. Getting bombarded by Takomo ads on my FB page so am looking forward to your video on them. And thanks for addressing the Titlist video. Didn't see it but was king of sick of all the questions about it. Glad you did and we can now move on.
Don’t worry Rick, I’m a fitter and I’m right there with ya on the GT3. Completely unimpressed. And I’m a titleist driver lover ! Loved the tsr3. It was my favorite driver of all time. Cannot switch into the GT3. Actually in the gt2, which is even more of a surprise.
Enjoyed that very much! My favorite irons were the Taylormade Burner foam filled from the 90's. Still have them and bet I could still game them today and play well with them.
Takomo irons are my favorite. I’ve got the 101 T’s and I’ve got Cleveland rx6 zipcore wedges in 52,58,60. Love them to death. Takomo is great for price and feel. I don’t feel like I need 5K bag to be a good player.
I have only owned 2 sets of irons, the Ping Eye 2 beryllium copper and the G 410. Both sets were bought second hand and both sets have given me great moments on the golf course.
Rick, I cannot express how much I enjoy and appreciate your channels. HIT is great and I value your thoughts on various clubs. I think I like the negative / questionable reviews the most because I can take certain clubs off my list to try (there are so many that if we tried them all, a fitting would never end). On the other hand, you seem to like a lot of clubs. So while negative reviews (too costly for the limited benefits, not as forgiving as advertised, etc) eliminate some sets, the many positive reviews leave me confused. So many to choose from with minor advantages based on my skills or lack thereof. Would love to see you take more definitive stances or narrow it down to handicap range or swing speed range or slicers or hookers or distance, etc. That way, if you say XYZ brand are fantastic clubs for this specific kind of player at least we can narrow our search a little better. I understand that all the top line manufactures (Taylormade, Calloway, Titleist, Ping, etc.) all make good clubs but there MUST be one that tips the scale when it comes to forgiveness at a 95 MPH swing speed for example. Same thing on shafts. With a narrower range of brands for specific statistical players (not just handicaps), your recommendations would carry far more weight. Again, I subscribe to all of your channels and enjoy each of them.
So I didn't watch the fitting video. But I completely respect trying to protect yourself from the fitter because at the end of the day they're trying to sell you on a product. And Rick is right. They're meant to hype you up even if you don't hit great shots. They need you to feel like you're hitting the ball better than you were with the other drivers. And you need to put up that barrier between yourself and the fitter because you know it's best for you and only you. Especially if you know the numbers mean and if you know what your swing is. Respect for answering the question too!
I recently took a chance on the Takomo 101’s and have loved them. Excited to hear you tried them out. It’s a great option for someone who wants P790’s but can’t stomach the price.
Well done for coming out and explaining this with a perfectly valid explanation (also enjoyed your answers to other questions) Would also love your top tips on surviving a British golfing winter
Nice one Rick fronted into it. I played golf as a 34 year old for the first time 4 months ago so watched a lot of your stuff and didn’t like all that carry on in each comment section of every video. I’m only up the road from Trafford wish you still did lessons !
Rick, I fully support your decision to take the video down of your Titleist fitting. I recently went with my son to a golf store here locally for him to get an iron fitting. We were enjoying the day until while he was hitting balls and getting fitted to an iron set, I overheard a couple employees talking. What I overheard was disturbing to me and even though I said nothing, I had to walk out of the store. I did not say anything to my son about it because he was so excited to be doing this for himself for the first time ever. But I needed to share this with you to see if this is something that maybe you have heard of in the past. So what I heard was two employees discussing which two companies were giving the employees a kick back (extra money) for recommending their products. Now to me, at that point sours the whole experience and explained to me why my son was not able to get the irons he was hitting the best in the simulator numbers wise. Which was the Wilson Dyna power Forged irons with Project X LS 5.0 iron shafts, which he was getting the most distance and the least amount of dispersion and still maintained good stopping power. But the two brands they discussed (TaylorMade and Callaway) are what they talked him into, and both were with just standard shafts that they had in store stock. Should I have said something or do I leave this alone. I just feel bad that my son has been wrongfully treated, which breaks my heart and has soured my view of two brands that I ultimately respected all my years in golf. I have always respected you opinion Rick and your reviews, so I could really use your opinion here to know what I should do in this situation. Shiels Army Always!!!!!!!
Ricks decision to delay his takomo review is a genius move! I have takomo irons and also value ricks opinion. So, i am eagerly anticipating the video. I reckon it will be one of his most watched videos in years!
Rick is right about being apprehensive when it comes to fitters. I had a bad experience last year with a local company in San Diego who had extremely outdated equipment and didn’t bother to go over any specs with me. I walked out.
I absolutely loved your Titleist fitting video, you should still release the driving fitting one as well since many, many of us would enjoy that one too!
Fair play for addressing the Titleist video. Your explanation made sense and we all have off days, yours are just caught on camera. Keep up the great work, but don’t drop the break 75 just do more courses around Europe/ America etc…
Best irons Wilson Fg 49 from around 1989? Think they were designed with faldo to get him to move from mizuno. But never changed. Amazing butter irons, the feel and workability was off the charts. Used them for over 20 years but then they started to break down . Miss then to this day
Fair play for addressing it head on Rick. No qualms here. Another idea though, keep Guy away from the camera if you do another fitting. He came across as that (unmerited) arrogant ‘hanger-oner’ you see with tour pros.
I enjoyed the "Raw Rick" in the Titleist video, kind of felt like we were a quiet observer at the fitting. Gave a good idea of what you could get for buying a service like that as well. Agree that you didn't come off in the most positive way but I didn't think you were out of line. You seemed just a bit frustrated with not seeing the ball flight you wanted on the day. Appreciate the content as always, Rick and team!
Wilson staff blades ❤ I am a high HC but them blades just felt amazing. And they didnt feel awful in regard to forgivenes either. Wilson realy has good products and are ofthen overlooked.

it definitely wasnt only 1% who were rightfully slating that video
I liked it too.
It was 1% defending the video lol.
Just relax people. Seem to be a lot of hurt Titleist supporters in the comments today
@@josephdenyerno just people who want reviewers to be accountable
I did see that driver fitting video and I'm glad you explained what happened.
Good answer on optimum driver spin rate. One adder: Ping has some great charts on their website showing optimum launch and spin for both maximum carry and maximum total distance as a function of swing speed/ball speed.
Well done Rick for Addressing the Titleist Driver fitting video. WE STILL LOVE YOU!
Skipped to the end for the main question!!! Good its finally been addressed as was annoying me on every podcast episode when didn't come up.
I cant handle how many grown men on here cared so much about that titelist video 😂😂
Love the honesty Rick, can see the hurt in your face when talking about the situation.
😂😂 ill be glad not seeing the same question in the comments section every vid
Using the phrase “grown men” loosely. Will be nice not to see the comment section filled with all the drama mammas.
He is weak@@johnpreston1995
Rick, after some reflection, seemed to welcome the feedback and has just addressed it. That's what businesses do with customers; listen to their customers and react accordingly. I think the issue here is your relationship with Rick Shiels Golf is parasocial. It's a business and we're customers. You don't know him. He's not a pal. You realise that, right?
My previous irons favorite were the TaylorMade Tp r9 just a beautiful iron and the gaping was superb. However my most Beloved set is my current set the TaylorMade P770s 2023 model. Absolutely beautiful and I'm playing the best golf of my life with them.😊
Well done Rick. Summed it up perfectly.
11:38 you welcome
Get out of the comment section. Have someone else read them and brief you the high points. Understand that most people are just going to talk shit. Keep the great content coming and don’t sweat the haters.
As a kid I was obsessed with the Ping i3 Blades. Tough to find these days especially in lefty. Finally got some a few years ago from Japan
Really appreciate the fitting explanation Rick. Makes much more sense where you're coming from. Always enjoying the content!
Atta boy Rick. Two great things in this video: Takomo reviews incoming and you addressing the fitting video. Your explanation was great and it's awesome to see you taking accountability by even talking about it. Can't wait for the Takomo reviews!
Rick - you are legit! That’s one 9f the big reasons I follow you. Keep up the great work. We appreciate it!
absolutely loving this Q & A 👏
7:21 favorite irons I ever had, Titleist 962b’s. Loved them so much. Every shop that has used clubs, I check to see if they have them.
Good for you for addressing it Rick
Thank you for adressing the issue you explained it besutifully and gave good reasons for removal. I appreciate you taking time to do so. I hope to see more great content from you and your team in the future. Cheers!
I liked the fitting video as it seems many others did. I never got the impression that you were being rude or having a bad day. It just seemed like you knew what you were looking to get out of the fitting and kept things on track. I thought it was a great look behind the scenes.
Honesty and humility 👏🏼
Looking forward to the Takomo review, and the honesty about the Titleist video, now we can all get back to normal😁
I guess I had this idea that you’re just living the life when you are also the same as us, just better and richer😄
I do wish you’d bring back the break 75 videos.
I liked the fitting video, no idea why you got bad feedback. I always look out for your reviews as they are clear and helpful
Very well explained Mr S. Love your stuff, keep up the fantastic work.
Very pleased to hear you mention your Wilson V6 irons.
Why are you so pleased?
Favourite irons are my current ones… PXG 0211 DualCor from 2021. I’m a 31 hcp and they’re perfect!
Well done for properly addressing the titlist video I've only heard about it in other comments 😊👍
well said about the fitting with Titleist...thank you...looking forward to more reviews...
Good job Rick, thanks for the explanation and the rest of the talk, good stuff
So I didn't watch the fitting video. But I completely respect trying to protect yourself from the fitter because at the end of the day they're trying to sell you on a product. And Rick is right. They're meant to hype you up even if you don't hit great shots. They need you to feel like you're hitting the ball better than you were with the other drivers. And you need to put up that barrier between yourself and the fitter because you know it's best for you and only you. Especially if you know the numbers mean and if you know what your swing is. Respect for answering the question too!
Totally get what your saying about the GT video, totally respect your decision 🤘🏽❤️
Appreciate your honestly Rick.
I recently took a chance on the Takomo 101’s and have loved them. Excited to hear you tried them out. It’s a great option for someone who wants P790’s but can’t stomach the price.
Well done for coming out and explaining this with a perfectly valid explanation (also enjoyed your answers to other questions)
Would also love your top tips on surviving a British golfing winter
Mizuno MP-52s are so so good! They feel great and have some help built in.
Best irons for me.. Balmoral forged muscle low profile irons 💪
My favorite irons are ones I still use; JPX919 steel forged.
The Scotty Cameron Studio line headcover was always my favorite. That Teryllium is worth some bucks.
I purchased the Callaway Edge set after your review back 2020ish..the black/green set. Fantastic irons and hybrids.
Fair play for addressing the Titleist video. Your explanation made sense and we all have off days, yours are just caught on camera.
Keep up the great work, but don’t drop the break 75 just do more courses around Europe/ America etc…
Favorite clubs were the 2014 Taylormade Tour Preferred CB’s or Srixon zx7’s!
My favorite set of irons were the beryllium copper ping Eye2s!!!!
Favorite set of irons without a doubt are the Hogan Radial blades
Super pumped for the takomo irons video. Been heavily considering getting some for myself, but not sure which set out of their line up to get.
My Ping ISI nickel and my Ping Eye 2 are my two favorites. Still have both sets and play with them. Eye 2 I have 1-LW. ISI Nickels 2-SW
