I don't know what he's trying to prove, but he needs to get a grip and realize that if he could just learn to laugh at himself and just clap along with the jokes that he would appear way more 'cool' like he wants to be perceived and that Amstell would probably get bored and leave him alone realizing that he's not affected emotionally by the banter. And was in a creative/artistic/existential rut. Thankfully, he later returned to the UK, and wrote hits for Olly Murs and was a songwriter and musician behind the scenes. And still works in the music industry. He has a newborn child now, and is still active social media
I also had a different feeling to others when watching this. It would be different if Simon was reading Preston's book- you go onto a show like that and expect to have the piss ripped out of you, but this was aimed at his wife. Many people can take jokes aimed at them but find it hard to take jokes at people they love. I felt incredibly sorry for him in this clip.

When I first watched this as a student, I had the same reaction as everyone else and just thought that Preston was a prima donna twat. But with a bit more mileage on me now, I'm borderline on Preston's side here. Amstell spent the entire time mocking his wife, not him. I'm not sure what else he could've done in that situation.

Looking back in 2023, I do feel a bit sorry for Preston here. People forget how ruthless live British TV was back then. You only have to look at what happened to Chris Eubank, who was mocked relentlessly. Who somehow managed to stomach it. Look at how will smith reacted to his partner being mocked. Then look at Preston. He had enough of his partner being mocked for her book which I'm sure he knows she put effort into. All he did was walk off. I still find it funny and it's a legendary TV moment. But I don't have an issue with the guy for it. I think many people would've done the same. You only have to be caught on a bad day.
The marriage was already failing at this stage, it was more likely just shame. Also, in the whole episode you see Preston was pissed off from the beginning when Amstell said his band only had two fans.

Back in the day, I admit I found this funny - but to be honest I actually now think all these years later it was a bit below the belt. I remember that at the start of the episode there was a bit more pointed stuff said, but it was no worse that what was said to other panellists. Preston just couldn't take a joke at the start and so they kept pushing it to get a rise, and he eventually left.

He took it in good humour when a joke was aimed at him, but I can understand why it's a different matter when Amstell takes an unprompted pop at his wife on national TV. I don't particularly like Preston and will admit to a lot of love for Simon, so it's always a clips that , yes , I find hilarious , yet also do respect Preston for to a degree. He wasn't going to be able to handle that and took one for the team in support and respect for his love , whatever we may and even he may now make of that whole thing ....

Preston was so childish, I mean it's not like they weren't mocking everyone else on the show. Had he never seen a panel show before? The guests and the host taking the piss out of each other is half the fun of these things.
@@samnectar Found this from an alt account (I rarely use that) but yeah I mean that's part of the humour of these shows, you come right back at Simon with something else.
It's just odd that Preston wasn't aware of this before going on the show.
@@samnectar That's the show, clearly his agent didn't give him a clear impression as to what to expect and Simon takes just as well as he gets, it's like going on Celebrity Juice and not expecting Keith Lemon to be crude.
@@samnectar I mean that is kinda the joke "You actually married this woman" also in defence of Simon he never said she was stupid, he merely read excerpts from her book. If Preston took from said excerpts that she was stupid that's on him.
@@samnectar From what I hear he'd been on the show before, I don't think Simon intended on bullying Preston just a "Haha your wife's kinda dim" but I do think after Preston walked off Simon did cross the line from good natured mocking to outright bullying.
Simply because it got views so they were actively trying to cause another walk-off

Back in the day, I admit I found this funny - but to be honest I actually now think all these years later it was a bit below the belt. If it was Preston's own biography then it would be fair game, but he was basically taking the piss out of his wife with everyone laughing at her. I don't blame Preston for walking out.

I've always felt bad for him. He knew that whatever he said the rest of the panel would have a witty put down to make him look bad. Aggression was not an option either. Honestly don't blame him for what he did. Simon should have stopped after a while; he went too far, but comedians do that

Nevermind the buzzcocks was well known for this, making laughs at the guests expense. Plenty of guests in the past took it on the chin like Jedward, Dappy, Donny Tourette, Preston knew what he was getting himself in for!

Like 99% of all others on that show, the trick is to have a sense of humour and not be a total wet fart...kinda the whole point of the show - it's banter, roasting and everyone making fools of themselves.

Ok I’m Australian and never saw this before. I don’t get what Preston objected to so much it made him storm out. Apart from the fact he’s a Pratt A quote from his wife’s book? What didn’t he like about that? can anyone enlighten me please?
I remember that at the start of the episode there was a bit more pointed stuff said, but it was no worse that what was said to other panellists. Preston just couldn't take a joke at the start and so they kept pushing it to get a rise, and he eventually left.

@@afpwebworks I dunno, if you watch him in his earlier appearance in series 15 when Lamarr hosted, he had no issues. He took it in good humour when a joke was aimed at him, but I can understand why it's a different matter when Amstell takes an unprompted pop at his wife on national TV. Amstell just decided to be nasty for a cheap laugh.
