  • Russell Cowburn is Professor of Experimental Physics at the University of Cambridge where he leads a large research team studying the physics and applications of nanotechnology. He is also a Christian. In this talk he describes what nanotechnology is, how it might be used to help solve global problems such as climate change and how we might begin to answer questions such as ‘what does God think about nanotechnology?
    A new industrial revolution is underway in which nanotechnology is being deployed in real products and offering possible solutions to climate change, water scarcity and growing healthcare needs as well as providing further answers to questions of origins of life. Is nanotechnology therefore a force for good, bringing relief to people in need and shedding further light on what it means to be human? Should faith communities embrace it positively? Or is it a threat, offering rival explanations for the origins of life and risking enormous environmental damage should it ever escape from our control? Professor Cowburn, who is both a nanotechnologist and a Christian, will give an overview of nanotechnology and discuss the ethics and theology of this new technology
    This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

      this can be said for literally any new technology or science lmao and it would be bad obviously. The main issues are that if we don't continue to develop it and add legal restrictions to the tech then that's the issue. nanotech is already being used mostly unrestricted which is unsafe; so authorities need to recognize this. also by continuing to develop it the tech becomes more safe.

As long as you do your scientific research and experiments based on realistic evidence-based facts; on the side,----you can believe anything that your intuition is suggesting to you to believe.

    to understand size I like to give the example of moving your hand 1m in 1 second to and fro. This is 1mm every millisecond. . for every mm your hand moves you sweep past 1000 red blood cells, and each blood cell is 10,000 atoms wide. By introducing the element of movement and time it gives a dynamic element that seems to allow a more visual understanding of the size. like a photon on a train.

      I know, right? How can he dismiss the unscientific nature of Genesis? The story is just that: a story. Even Christian Biblical scholars admit Genesis is pure allegory. You can't get much less scientific than allegory. We have no reason to think the universe was poofed into existence by a magical incantation, that there was a literal Adam and Eve, or that there was a global flood (per the Noah story).

    I'm an atheist, I think it's cool that he's religious, tbh I'm always desperate to hear a religious view from a scientist. BUT, what is that weird stuff about God telling us not to destroy the planet with nanotech? Are atheist nanotechnologists likely to destroy the planet because they haven't read the bible, so couldn't care less?

      I strongly doubt that atheist nanotechnologists would be any less careful than Christian ones.
      In fact, based on what I know about my Christian brothers and sisters right now, I am inclined to think that we need christian scientists to learn from their athiest counterparts in order to break out of the many religious restrictions hindering their ability to learn stuff that seem scary to many of their religious leaders.

      I still feel that love is the way. It's a feeling and it's a good intention.
      The fastest route to peace is having intentions of love and servitude to others.
      Yes perhaps I'm in a dream.
      But it's my dream. So "tread lightly because you tread on my dreams".

    Sarif was right about one thing. It's in our nature to want to rise above our limits. Think about it. We were cold, so we harnessed fire. We were weak, so we invented tools. Every time we met an obstacle, we used creativity and ingenuity to overcome it. The cycle is inevitable. In the past, we've had to compensate for weaknesses, finding quick solutions that only benefit a few. But what if we never need to feel weak or morally conflicted again? What if the path Sarif wants us to take enables us to hold on to higher values with more stability? One thing is obvious. For the first time in history, we have a chance to steal fire from the gods. To turn away from it now - to stop pursing a future in which technology and biology combine, leading to the promise of a Singularity - would mean to deny the very essence of who we are. No doubt the road to get there will be bumpy, hurting some people along the way. But won't achieving the dream be worth it? We can become the gods we've always been striving to be. We might as well get good at it. - Deus Ex Human Revolution

    Psalm 2
    Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
    2 The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,
    3 Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.
    4 He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.
    5 Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.
    6 Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.
    7 I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
    8 Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.
    9 Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.
    10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.
    11 Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
    12 Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.
    Isaiah 24:21 |
    And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.

    Nano-Augmentation: Pipedream, or Theory for The Future?
    By Hugh Darrow
    Excerpt from a paper in NeoNature, September 2022
    We've been throwing the word "nanotechnology" around for decades yet, despite only our bests effort, we are only inching closer to that molecular-scale frontier when in fact we should be racing towards it. In the decades to come, the enhanced beings -- post humans who are our progeny -- will look at the mechanical devices we rudely bolted onto our living flesh or buried inside our grey matter, and they will mock us for our crudity. They will look upon what we have made with the same curiosity, the same disinterest, as the pilot of a veetol aircraft would look upon an ox cart.
    The future of human augmentation lies in the small - in fact, the smallest. In the next thirty years, the molecular frontier will be broken and true nano-scalar programming and biological reorientation will be possible. There will be no tedious instances of severing limbs to replace them with steel proxies. We will drink in these tiny machines, inject them - and be transformed. - Deus Ex Human Revolution

    I like where he's going, but I feel that he should be a bit braver. Abiogenesis is completely impossible. It is not about a God of the gaps, but about reality. Scientists will be waiting for an infinity of eternities and it will not change that truth.

    • @Shake69ification
      @Shake69ification 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, and he admits otherwise, contradicting his own ideas. His idea about how nanotechnology will show us how things go from big to small is analogous to how evolution works. As to your claim about abiogenesis, I'm sure you have proof of that, right? I'll wait ... no? We understand how proteins can form and from there once we have the right building blocks, physics now says that with those blocks and the right conditions, life is inevitable. Has it been proven yet? I'll admit not, but we've identified a path by which it could happen. Further, we _are_ here, so life *did* start somehow.

      @@TheMickeymental you made a claim, a positive assertion, that evolution doesn't work and I asked for you to back up your claim. You tried to move the goalposts by talking about abiogenesis, something I didn't ask you about.
      Evolution is not a religion, it's fact, supported not by opinion, but by mountains of research and evidence. Modern evolutionary theory actually enjoys greater empirical support than gravitational theory.
      Yes, there are far more atheists in the biological sciences than any other disciplines, and that should tell you something. The more we learn, the more we are convinced by the evidence that we are the result of natural processes. Are there still gaps in our knowledge? Of course. In fact, the process of how life began is one such gap, but one which are inching ever closer to understanding. At this point I must remind you that the idea of abiogenesis is *not* part of evolutionary theory. Evolution deals _only_ with the changing of lifeforms and the introduction of new species.

    Psalm 49 :
    10 For all can see that the wise die,
    that the foolish and the senseless also perish,
    leaving their wealth to others.
    11 Their tombs will remain their houses[b] forever,
    their dwellings for endless generations,
    though they had[c] named lands after themselves.
    12 People, despite their wealth, do not endure;
    they are like the beasts that perish.
    13 This is the fate of those who trust in themselves,
    and of their followers, who approve their sayings.[d]
    14 They are like sheep and are destined to die;
    death will be their shepherd
    (but the upright will prevail over them in the morning).
    Their forms will decay in the grave,
    far from their princely mansions.
    15 But God will redeem me from the realm of the dead;
    he will surely take me to himself.

    A fine example of logic origami... one can fold ideas like paper to represent pretty much any warm and fuzzy treasured self-delusion. He says thinking about God as existing in the gaps is wrong because as we find explanations for "stuff" God becomes smaller... he is, how would you say it? Oh yeah... right! Then he goes off the rails with a complete disconnect, and says, with no explanation or supporting evidence, that God is the cause of everything... again with no evidence or support for that contention. This is not the brightest moment for a scientist to form connections where there are none... it's just warmed over fallacious arguments from incredulity and authority... and of course the evident gullibility arising from assorted points in space and time... including that which likely comes from the 4 to 14 window... really sad.

    there are many kingdoms; for there is no space in the which there is no kingdom; and there is no kingdom in which there is no space, either a greater or a lesser kingdom.
    38 And unto every kingdom is given a law; and unto every law there are certain bounds also and conditions.
    39 All beings who abide not in those conditions are not justified.
    40 For intelligence cleaveth unto intelligence; wisdom receiveth wisdom; truth embraceth truth; virtue loveth virtue; light cleaveth unto light; mercy hath compassion on mercy and claimeth her own; justice continueth its course and claimeth its own; judgment goeth before the face of him who sitteth upon the throne and governeth and executeth all things.
    41 He comprehendeth all things, and all things are before him, and all things are round about him; and he is above all things, and in all things, and is through all things, and is round about all things; and all things are by him, and of him, even God, forever and ever.
    42 And again, verily I say unto you, he hath given a law unto all things, by which they move in their times and their seasons;
    43 And their courses are fixed, even the courses of the heavens and the earth, which comprehend the earth and all the planets.
    44 And they give light to each other in their times and in their seasons, in their minutes, in their hours, in their days, in their weeks, in their months, in their years-all these are one year with God, but not with man.
    45 The earth rolls upon her wings, and the sun giveth his light by day, and the moon giveth her light by night, and the stars also give their light, as they roll upon their wings in their glory, in the midst of the power of God.
    46 Unto what shall I liken these kingdoms, that ye may understand?
    47 Behold, all these are kingdoms, and any man who hath seen any or the least of these hath seen God moving in his majesty and power.
    48 I say unto you, he hath seen him; nevertheless, he who came unto his own was not comprehended.
    49 The light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehendeth it not; nevertheless, the day shall come when you shall comprehend even God, being quickened in him and by him.
    50 Then shall ye know that ye have seen me, that I am, and that I am the true light that is in you, and that you are in me; otherwise ye could not abound.
