  • Dr. Jessica Winter is a nanotechnology cancer researcher who one day found herself to be a patient. Dr. Winter discusses her research in the Chemical and Biomedical Engineering departments at the Ohio State University, her initial diagnosis, what it's like to be on the other side of the treatment table, and her treatment at the Wexner Medical Center's James Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Winter also discusses roadblocks in translating research from the bench to the bedside and how her illness has shaped her outlook on the future of cancer research.
    Professor Winter’s primary research interest is the exploration of the relationship between nanoparticles and biological elements. Her work is divided into three areas:
    Development of nanoscale neural prosthetic devices
    Patterned chemical and physical cues for improved neural adhesion and synapse formation
    Creation of oriented, nanopatterned surfaces using biological elements
    She is an established leader in nanobiotechnology through the development of magnetic quantum dots for cell and molecular separations.
    Winter is an Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering and also Associate Professor, Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at The Ohio State University. Her degrees include a B.S., Northwestern University, a M.S., University of Texas at Austin, 2001 and a Ph.D., University of Texas at Austin, 2004.
    In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

    nice documentary, i love 't. great work. I am very interested in cancer topics. I find this video very interesting. I made a more than 20 video about cancer, and the rest is coming. yet I find this explanation beautiful. thanks for the info!

    indeed, why on earth are these technologies patented. Go Open Source, like so much of the rest of the general industry is doing these days.

    Brilliant but sad that patents are the path to the clinic. We need a better way to fund this stuff that doesn't throttle access to science.

      +Janet Reid yes, Government should fund this experiments.

    • @samsonian
      @samsonian 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, and if our government did everything to benefit its population we would not have a large percentage of our current problems. Patents aren't the only way, but labs don't run for free and the intellectual as well as monetary capital expended in those efforts must be funded somehow. I think a great way to take care of at least providing crowd-sourced funding for certain projects would be a medical version of kickstarter; helping cut time researchers have to look for funding. If that were the case, the regulatory issues of filing for and waiting for patent review and then the work of clinical trials could conceivably be shortened somewhat. Good luck and godspeed, Jessica.

    i would like more people in cureing all deases to study the fact of what frenqency the tissue is when its living...then find frenqency opposit and adminester..spelling is bad i know.......light and sound are ......the ends of the spectrums....bring them together...frenqency..... problem solved.....we should be able to do this.......but there are still missing places on the perodic table.

    I want to start working in nanotechnology and cancer treatment so i searched both words in youtube and i saw this .. and know , i am not even funded for research here as i am not uni. Staff of research institute .. so i wanted to take scholarship to one of the uni. That cares about this field but i need recommendation letters from my drs. But they say i am not gonna be useful .. i don't know what to do now should i just become a regular lab worker or i should go on this research field .. it needs money , effort and support and i don't have any
