I started playing in 1970, EVERYBODY played blades! You found a way to get round and nobody complained about difficulty! I believe my game deteriorated with cavity backs for a long time! I now have a set of Orka RS10CB’s and Lynx Tour blades both fitted, both beautiful and both top quality! Ball striking is on the up again! I intend to play my blades only through the winter possibly with my Persimmon golf woods! Proper old school!
Not 2024 but both old and new Srixon z-forged are right up there imo. Slightly stronger loft of 33, lower spin, and slightly larger profile make a nice user friendly blade
Started with Slazenger plus irons from lillywhites in London, cost a lot of money but boy did I make them things sing and dance 🕺,no such thing as rough or bunkers it was all fairways and greens being a teenager 😂
Nice round-up, Dan! I have the 620MBs in 7-PW. Aesthetic perfection. Most beautiful iron ever made. That's not a great reason to buy an iron, but I'd had my eye on them for a few years and finally had to do it. I was pleasantly surprised that I hit them very well. I'm a 4 handicap, but I wouldn't say iron play is a particular strength. But the control and precision in the 620MB short irons is something else. With a 9-iron in a bigger player's distance iron I kind of find myself just aiming for somewhere on the green, but with the MBs you really start to aim very small...and miss small. Well, mostly. It IS still a blade. Also, I play a lot of bump-and-runs around the green with 9 iron and PW and the control with a smaller club on those shots is noticeable. I filled out the set with 7-5 in the T150. And when the ball-striking inevitably goes south I just pop The Mizuno JPX 923 Forged irons back in the bag!
As a bluff old traditionalist I played my cg1 blades for 18 years. However got fit for zx7's last year but went for 9 and wedge in the z-forged. Just lovely feel and performance. Wish I'd gone for the 8 as well now. It's how golf should look when over the ball imo.
Nice overview, enjoyed that! As an every-other-month-player I'd probably lose to blades, so I was going for players' distance irons, specifically for the Mizuno Pro 245s with DG 120g stiff shafts. Very forgiving on non-center strikes with excellent distance, and they're not ripping my finger joints apart when I hit them thin like my previous cavity backs did.
I strike the ball well and take tiny divots when I compress my irons properly. But these are XXIO irons which are for mid to high handicappers. I’m wondering if my game is ready for blades?! I’ve never tried them…
I have the takomos in the bag. Real nice and indeed fairly cheap. Or, better said, the price an iron set should be. It's not as "unforgiving" as many make it sound, sure it loses more distance when mis-struck than a "players distance iron", but hey, maybe it's better to fall short of that front bunker instead of right in it, and get a fried egg lie!
Filthy blade section 😂, I still maintain that old school blades from the 1980s and 1990s feel softer and are more suited to tight turf links conditions. Nice list Dan
After 20 years playing Mizuno MP33's, I went into Titleist 620CB's and they're great but I'll be swapping them out for the 620MB's .... there's nothing better than playing blades.
I also have the T zoid Pro irons... I am using them now the weather has deteriorated, helps improve strike, love hitting them. Combined them with big bertha alpha driver and a selection of goofy putters. Great fun. All my new clubs have been put away until the weather improves.
Had a set of Wilson staff blades in the late eighties loved them then changed to petron professional bladed irons and that had a 10 wedge with the set still have them but they are in the loft I often have a look at them and say to myself how the hell did I hit them😱😂👍
When i could play properly 😂my irons were Wilson Staff Fluid Feel. They were lovely, no idea of the lofts and spin rpm but they just worked. I am happy to see Wilson blades in your selection. A few of the others i was surprised especially the number 1 choice. I think Taylormade have staff players playing blades that i dont believe you can buy new anymore. P7, lovely looking but only for the ball strikers or at least people who are going to find the middle all the round not maybe a few times. Getting old isnt very good 😂
Bit surprised at number 1, clearly direct to consumer are really catching up. The big guns are going to have to start taking notice soon, and stop the price hikes.
Blades are way more consistent. Your drop offs from middle will actually be less. Problem with game improvement irons is they're hot out the middle, therefore your drop offs will be bigger on your mishits.
I don't agree that blades are hard to hit. Every time I get anything else, I come back to them fairly sharpish. Im playing takomos now and agree they're excellent.
Not sure blades are so hard to hit, the struggle will be for distance especially for a slower swing speed like myself. I have a set from the 70’s for occasional use.
Except for the most skilled players there is no need to have a full set of blades. Even tour pros mostly use small cavity backs. If I were to change my beloved i210s, I would definitely think about blades from 7i-PW, maybe even 6i but anything longer than that I want some help. So I do think one factor that needs to be thought about is how easy (or not) the blade can be combined with a more forgiving club or two in the manufacturer's line up
They only good thing about getting used to blades is your ball striking will improve because it has to. I played mp32s for a couple of years and loved them. Have since gone into mp25s though, which I LOVE!

I would keep them for the summer
Great point of view and overview! Plus amazing image quality there mate!!!
I love the look of the Wilson Staff, wish I had the game for it!

Now we're talking ..... New blades ❤

Nice list, Dan, was quite surprised that Tokomo was even on the list, let alone, number one. Cheers.

I still got my Mizuno Tzoid pro forged from 1998. 😁 Are all the clubs fitted for you like the Titleist?
Wow what a set, I still have a Tzoid 3 wood 👌

Great video Dan,I'm a 5 handicap play the ping i210,but I'm contemplating trying these takomo, but the cb not mb,any chance of a cb review 😊

@DanHendriksenGolf yes thanks Dan,I'll give a watch
I like the cobra blade looks
Takomo is really making a name for themselves!

Blades are actually game improvement clubs. As in, you'd better improve your game if you have a set.
Assuming that happens 😂

me too in the early 90's

The old cllaway apex is pure filth ❤
What is it why people say blades are hard?
Anything pre 1990's beat any modern blade or cavity backs for control and feel
I don't agree that blades are hard to hit. Every time I get anything else, I come back to them fairly sharpish. Im playing takomos now and agree they're excellent.

km700 for me
I bought a set, which are totally beyond my skill set, just because they look SO good. Prettiest club I've ever seen and I'm an old golfer. Pure art.
Trouble with Takomo is that you have to order 4-PW, which for me means I won’t order blades clubs from them, I don’t want bladed 4 or 5 irons
Plus zero fitting experience and very limited choices. Won’t make my top 100 list.
You can get a mixed set. 3-6 cb 7-pw mb

🎉
The Srixon beats them all.
Do you use the Srixon Luke?
👍🏼
No Srixon
I’ll never be good enough for blades, but nice to see how the other half live 😂
