Here is the thing I don't understand. When testing clubs you go straight at the pin. You do very well. On the course, you always seem to be trying to hit a high draw, low fade, big slinger, very rarely straight at the pin. Question 1. Would the test be better for you if you tried many shot shapes? Question 2. Could you play a few rounds where you take your prevailing shot shape and go at the pins? I am not good at golf. I imagine it would be very fun to shape shots at will but keeping it simple when possible could result in lower scores.
This is largely because of the hole shape, lie , slope/ball above below feet, wind, and many other factors when playing on a course. I used to think this from the outside too first watching Rick and other pros like how are they so pin straight in a sim and then get to the course and end up with an 85? 😅 courses make good players have to hit a variety of shots that are rarely straight and on flat ground with no wind
It’s one thing to hit a ball on a simulator where the green is flat and the pin is in the middle, and something different when you’re on a real course with an undulating green, a back left pin with trouble left. On the first one, you could hit any shape you wanted and it’ll work out, but on the second, a draw would be the percentage play (provided you don’t overcook it). Even if it doesn’t draw, you’re still probably in good shape. But for us mere mortals who don’t always control the side spin well, a straight shot to the middle of the green probably isn’t a bad idea 😂
Rick has always tried to hit shots he has no business playing on the course. Just because a hole looks like it favors a certain shot doesn’t mean you should be trying it. Morikawa said in a recent interview he hits one shot 95% of the time. Rick would improve dramatically if he would find a shot and stick to it.
Same! I'm going into my 5th season of golf and I need to replace my P790. My whole bag, except putter is TM and I love the looks and I was leaning towards a combo p770/p7cb set, but the price of the Takomo (and I prefer the old p7cb looks) makes it hard to go TM again. It's just too expensive for what it provides :(
@@grumpywizards Yes, very well. I mean they are like any other forged clubs and will eventually show small marks from being in the bag. If you just keep them clean and don't hit rocks with them, they will look good for a long time. Even then it's just cosmetic.
Rick, great review and I agree with every word… however I think you’re giving more credit to the big manufacturers than they deserve. If you look at the Taylor Made irons, they are almost identical to the old Mizuno T-zoid to give one example. This is true of most irons these days. It’s just a newer version of an old design in my opinion. The big manufacturers just have much higher overhead costs to cover than a company like Takomo.
Since the 20th centuri basically every headshape of forged irons has been discovered. A lump of 1025 or S20C is basically not any different from another clubhead looking the same or similar. It is jus a preference, if you wanna pay twice the price or get the same performance for half the price. I have played Mizuno blades for 15 odd years, or so. But wanted something different for my 50th and could afford them only at 54 years of age. Now playing a limited edition of Miura irons PW-3 but could as well be playing my old Mizuno MP-69’s. No difference, except the Miuras are designed by Katsuhiro and The Golden Bear himself. The off-center hits with my Miura set are worse than with the Mizunos, and the feel is softer on Mizunos due the Grain Flow forging compared to Miura’s triple strike. Mizzies are around 15-hundred custom and after shaft change and all the dues, taxes and customs covered, to my liking the Miuras now at 35. But I love them.
I’ve been playing the second generation P790 for 2 years and love my irons. This past weekend used a friends Takomo 8 iron on a par 3. I was very impressed. Flew higher, had the same distance and felt better. If I knew about these irons before hand, I would’ve bought the Takomo for sure. 🤙🏽
Rick was a great honest review. My one comment is on their website they have an EXTREMELY limited choice of shafts, grips and set make up even in their "custom" section. Thanks, Bob
This is why I wish that more people knew about Maltby over Takomo. You can customize everything on your clubs (if you don't get a Pak) from grip to shaft. Basically any grip or shaft that GolfWorks sells (which is like all of them) you can add onto your clubs and they're better clubs than Takomo.
Put em in the bag Rick. Be the change golf needs. $650 irons play the same as $1000 irons. By the way. I feel like RnD is now on what will make people purchase, not the clubs as much. All irons have tungsten in toe/heel and thinner/wider sole for the better or worse player. Hasn’t changed for 10 years.
I got a fitting last week and wanted to try the P7CBs and I was super impressed. But I wanted to give the Takomos a try. Glad Rick agrees with my choice.
I live in North Carolina. If I had $1250 to spend and I could buy a brand new set of Takomo irons AND play Pinehurst #2 during peak season ($600) OR I could buy the set of TaylorMade irons I go Takomo every single time! Money is money when quality is equal.
Great review...as always. The only downside to the Takomo's is that you can't get fitted for the optimal shaft and lie setting. As a direct to consumer brand, you can't go to a club fitter for a proper fitting before you buy the clubs.
commenting cause I bugged for these videos for ages. Talked my dad into buying them back in the spring and he loves his 101s, I had been trying to get you to review them cause he watches you as well :P
This is the video I've been waiting for! This is massive for Takomo. I play the Takomo 101T irons and I have always compared them to the TaylorMade P790 in terms of look, feel and consistency. But they're HALF the price of the P790. Why would you ever want to pay more for the same thing?? Takomo to the moon!
I got my 101s in February. 3 months later, i got my first hole in one! No need to get the most expensive clubs. Takomo clubs r just as good for cheaper!
I love my 101’s. Been playing ping for 20 years. Thought I’d try these as an experiment. Third round with takomos and shot my best round. It’s been a great season
I’m using the P7CBs in my shorter irons (770s in the longer irons). I’m a big fan. I tried out a few different shafts during my fitting to get the right peak height I was looking for. That’s the only knock I have on the DTC brands, the lack of fitting process. But I get that spending $1400+ for a set of irons is a tough hill to climb for many when you can get something pretty close for half the price.
Proud owner of the 101T's. The only issue I had with buying them was not being able to try them beforehand, but I think they have a pretty generous return policy if I'm not mistaken. Absolutely love them!
I just got them as well. For the reason you stated, I decided to get the heads only, then had my local fitter set me up with shafts. Interestingly, he used the TM P770 to simulate the 101T during the fitting. At sixty years old I don’t have the swing speed I used to, so he put me in Project X 5.5’s. Obviously this method almost offset the lower price point (not quite), but I absolutely love them.
The return policy if I recall correctly with my 101ts I could use the 7 iron as I felt (so I put it in my bag against my current 7iron) went to the range played a round and felt it out. I had that opportunity to decide whether or not I wanted to return them or put them in my bag
These are both a solid forged head in a CB type configuration. There’s not a whole lot that you can do as a manufacturer to “improve” this type of iron. The only thing I can think of is the actual forging process which might improve the feel from one to another. It’s the same with blades. So as long as you like the look of either one, they feel the same, and perform the same, why spend double the price? I just wish I would’ve paid attention to the Takomo site and bought the bronze ones. Those irons are beautiful. I hope they come out with those again. The better DTC brands are quality. Look at what Toura Golf is doing if you want to test some fantastic Japanese forgings at a reasonable price.
I'd be curious for Rick to try the Maltby's. They're in that same budget-friendly category, where you can get an 8-piece set for less than $600USD. Some other reviewers have really loved the TS1 IM (hollow head, forgiving) and the TS3 (forged cavity back).
Rick would have to personally order and pay for a set of Maltbys. That ain't happening. If it doesn't show up at the doorstep with a $0 pricetag, it likely won't get reviewed by RS. I'd love nothing more than for him to prove me wrong.
@@andybt3989I'd love to eat my own words smothered in BBQ sauce. I just dont think Maltby is even an afterthought for RS, regardless of the numerous requests to review them. I just dont see him going out of his way to order and purchase a set of Maltbys when quite frankly they dont care what he thinks and arent chasing him down for a review.
I have a set of TS3 and a set of TS4. They are both fantastic clubs. The TS3 is about as easy a club to hit as I’ve ever used. I have them in the Maltby MPF Pro Series graphite. Anyone could play those.
@@Hunter-zp5hd that's my exact setup. Like butter smothered in gravy! So smooth but stable as ever. Those shafts are so ridiculously underrated and a best kept secret for those of us who know about them.
I agree with Rick on this one, based on looks, which are objective, price which is hard to avoid, based on the huge saving, then performance with both delivering similar numbers. The Tacomo's have to take it overall. When the facts are looked at, there have been thousands of club design's over the many decades, so copying will happen, somewhere along the line. The biggest jump in overall improvements over the years IMHO has come from shafts, likely being the biggest contributor to increases in length and accuracy, as good fittings have proven all around the World. R&D with any new brand is expensive, if you build from the ground up, but manufacturers of iron heads, have all the designs ready and waiting, just needing the name adding to the mould, or engraved into the metal after being cast. So R&D today, may not be, what it was generations ago, they just bring A & B together and give it a name. Advertising, promo events, tour pro's, now TH-cam influencers testing, all aid in selling the products, using whichever method, proves the most efficient and effective for increasing sales.
Really great head-to-head and nice to see the honest comparison not being blinded by big brand bias. Any chance of you comparing the new P770 against the Tacomo 201 (which I think is the closest equivalent, even though the 201 is solid vs the hollow body P770. I have the P770 but the Tacomo 201 is high on the list for future replacement as it's a really nice looking club and I've not seen a bad review.
Not being able to test the Takomos actually makes them quite expensive. You have to spend £650 blind and hope that the fit and head choice was the right decision. At lest with TM you can get fitted and try before you buy...
I got a fitting with TaylorMade P790. I got the shaft specs and lie-angle and ordered 101Ts. The shafts has actually a much bigger effect on your swing and shots the the club-heads will ever have. Takomo offers a decent catalog if shaft options so I would say its not a big leap of faith. Really, not much that can go wrong. The only thing was I had to wait for my customized clubs for +2 months. Its a long time to wait... But then again, its all worth the wait with the price-tag. I also ordered Takomos 52° and 60° Skyforger wedges (kept my old 56°) and absolutely love them. Even if the 60° is something I use very rarely; only so many lob-shot situations.
@ I’m a 10 handicap . Strike ball fairly well and hit irons fairly long . What do you recommend me hitting ? 201 ? Strong and swing speed is above avg . Should I do regular tour stiff or tourlightshaft stiff ? . I don’t need extra distance just workability and a little forgiveness
I’ve got a new set of P790s. Not a TaylorMade guy. But I tested everything. Couldn’t argue with the numbers. It was just a toss up between Wilson and TM. Love Wilson staff but decided to try TM as I’d never owned any.$3k and change at Club Champion. Complete BS. However I’m playing the golf of my life; but since then I have hit Takomos: they are every bit the iron of my $3k Taylor Mades. And yes, I’ve checked, and the online fittings are just as involved and accurate as the fittings you get from dudes who are just trying to make commission. Buy the Takomos. A set of golf clubs should not be $3k. 5i-Gap, btw. Basic steel shafts.
Problem with the Takomos is that u can't test them or be custom fitted. One shaft option only as far as i understand, although they can sell the club heads alone. These shortcomings may keep many people away. Lookswise the TMs are superb, probably the best looking on the market at present.
Rick does this type of review minimize the need for ‘fitting’ talked so much about for the major brands, but not available from direct to consumer brands?
I fancied going back to traditional lofts so I bought a set of takomo 301 cb’s. They’re not for me, not now I’m the wrong side of 50 years old. 😂 dropped a clanger there.
what R&D?? Taylormade, Mizuno, Ping, Titliest etc etc spend more on marketing than they do on R&D to make you believe you're getting something better, when the truth is, they move some weights around, use a different material and put a new colour and name on it. there is only so much you can do with a piece of metal and weights. The only benefit of named brands is you can test them, but you're paying double the price for the privilege
@HITGolfReviews, Rick -- this is very helpful, but I think it would add a lot if you would spend a little time discussing the shafts on each club, since shafts have such an influence on performance. Even if it's just to show what the stock shaft is, any differences between the two. Otherwise we don't really have all the relevant information to draw a conclusion.
My Missus just said, why doesn't he cover the names up and do a blind test? .....then "voila" you mention it. Great test Rick.....ps...I use Wilson d7's and I dont think theres a premium brand that would better them for my level (16 hcp)
My main concern is can you get fitted for the right shaft with Tacomo? When I got fitted for my P790 I tested 3 different shafts. The third one I tested (the most stiff) was the best for me. Without testing I don't know if I get the right shaft for me with the Tacomo's
Hopefully they stay on this road and don't start sponsoring big players, because then their prices will soon match Taylormade. I paid 850 for my Taylormade M2s in 2018, 5 to PW, so 650 is a spot on price. Next time I'm in the market I'll definitely check them out.
I absolutely think performance wise Takomo are great irons. Personally, just waiting on a better look as I don't love the looks. But I don't have a great argument for why I would pay twice the price for Taylormade
I don't understand why big brand companies like taylormade don't offer clubs with older tech at a lower price. like the only option on taylormade's website is 1400 and up in price for an iron set. I would happily buy new p770s with 5 year old technology and looks for the same price as takomo. I guess they think someone buying a new set from them is buying them either way.
I would LOVE a review of their 7 fairway wood. And if Tacomo are reading this, a Putter line would sell like hotcakes (kinda the only club I'd want to upgrade at the moment)
What’s the odds Tacoma brings out a new 101 version for next season. Looking to buy my first new set of irons for myself. Been playing golf about 3 months so far with about 15 year old clubs.
All it shows is the greed from manufacturers and how they just take and give nothing back. There market audience is going to be dominated by average golfer and yet they are asking us to pay £600 for a driver. Over £1000 for irons. We’re not making millions like your pro do. We go to work 12 hr shifts and play as often as we can weather permitting especially in England. Time golf have a lot more back. I want Takomo clubs
Wait, is Rick not wearing a polo or sweater? A new look? Looks quite relaxed and like an average golfer lol 😂 I did a double take because I didn’t think it was Rick at first, knew it was you bc of voice.
Can you do a 101t up against p770 comparison please I’m deciding which ones to get next month I cant decide tho 😂😂 Currently playing speed blades and they will take a lot to beat them to be honest but they are getting old and a fancy a new set 😁
There is no difference, except the price. The 101’s feel better and same distance as the P790. I’ve been playing the P790’s over 2 years. Hit the 101’s last weekend, very impressed. Thought about buying a set, just because of the price. The 101 iron I hit was an 8 iron with the KBS lite shaft regular.
Can’t figure out what takomo I want ! I play older set of titlest AP- 1 712 They are over a decade old . I’m about 8-10 handicap . Someone help me out . 101’s are out for me 201 or 301 ? Shit 101t maybe ? I don’t know ahhhh
It's even worse in France, Taylor made are approx 1450/1550 EUR for 7 irons and the Takomos are 650 EUR. I don't care about the "but they have the R&D and they're sponsoring a lot of pla...", it's unbearable, plus TM will quickly release a new set or "special edition" following yours and give you a bittersweet feeling. Boycot this shit boys, if you do not count your money, waste it the way you want to, just keep in mind a 750 EUR dynapwr forged set will outperform your brand new TI fusion 2200+ EUR, already losing its black paint after a few weeks. Yep, you're getting that r3kt.
😂 so when my little guy sits down next to me while im watching golf reviews he asks "daddy are there any bad words? Can i watch this with you?" "Naw man these are golf videos.. we're safe". I now have to tell him.. "yes son, there are bad words".. 🤣😂
“Inspired by your favourite TH-camrs”. Give me strength 🙄 The fact you give a spiel about choosing between the clubs based on who is sponsored by them rather than highlighting the fact that Taylormade gives you the opportunity to be custom fit shows just how unserious you are.

I touched a set of those Takomos the other day and the amount of fingerprints they collect is insane.
I use Takomo and love them
I've been considering the 201s to replace my Taylormade Sim irons. These videos are helping me potentially make that decision.
@@jymferrier I swing titleist ap-1 712 they are older . I’m thinking this very same thing . Would mind just a little bit forgiveness .
switched from titleist ap3 to 201's. Great clubs! wont regret it
Really great head-to-head and nice to see the honest comparison not being blinded by big brand bias.
I recommend checking out the Maltby (especially the TS1 im and the TS3)
Always great videos rick!
Can you test the 101t irons please Rick? They're the ones I'm interested in getting! Thanks 👍
Wish I could hit my 4 iron like that 😍
@@takomogolfcompany, remember the advice from the Golden Bear for how to hit your 3-iron. Just imagine, there is “7” stamped at the bottom!
The Taylor Made remind me of those fantastic MacGregor M685 forged i played when I was younger...
Not being able to test the Takomos actually makes them quite expensive. You have to spend £650 blind and hope that the fit and head choice was the right decision. At lest with TM you can get fitted and try before you buy...
I got fit with a similar club and used that for my order.
They have a good return policy.
@454budman this is my plan when I get new Irons next year.
Always good review, I would like to see a review of those clubs on the course one time unfortunately not likely this time of year
If I was a forged iron player, I’d save the money and get Takoma irons! I play cast for the durability since I can’t replace them every few years.
this is a great review. Only thing I'd say is Takomo only offer KBS shafts and I see you were playing a DG so maybe they made this for you specially.
Why you ditch the Wilson's?
Rick does this type of review minimize the need for ‘fitting’ talked so much about for the major brands, but not available from direct to consumer brands?
Would love to see more vids on Takomo clubs
Wonder how you managed to get the Takoma's with dynamic gold shafts ? Their website only offers KBS..
@@Dbarts76, very true!
Rick love the videos! Question for you. Would you recommend getting fitted for irons or buy off the rack? I’m a 20 handicap looking to improve!
The other factor is shaft options. Would seriously consider the Takomo’s but I need graphite shafts.
TAKOMO MAKE GOOD CLUBS ...... ITS THE SIMPLE great fair review
forgot love mine 101s
@@GolfMatesu got the 101s or 101L Liam ?
@HITGolfReviews, Rick -- this is very helpful, but I think it would add a lot if you would spend a little time discussing the shafts on each club, since shafts have such an influence on performance. Even if it's just to show what the stock shaft is, any differences between the two. Otherwise we don't really have all the relevant information to draw a conclusion.
My Missus just said, why doesn't he cover the names up and do a blind test? .....then "voila" you mention it.
Great test Rick.....ps...I use Wilson d7's and I dont think theres a premium brand that would better them for my level (16 hcp)
You should try the offer that ORKA have going. £399 for a fitted set of irons. Also would give a British company some good profile.
Good review
My main concern is can you get fitted for the right shaft with Tacomo? When I got fitted for my P790 I tested 3 different shafts. The third one I tested (the most stiff) was the best for me. Without testing I don't know if I get the right shaft for me with the Tacomo's
Hopefully they stay on this road and don't start sponsoring big players, because then their prices will soon match Taylormade. I paid 850 for my Taylormade M2s in 2018, 5 to PW, so 650 is a spot on price. Next time I'm in the market I'll definitely check them out.
Think im going to retire my old AP2s. Seriously looking at Takomo. Just need a fitting so I can decide the 201s or the 101Ts.
Great Review
Could you do the same for the new decathlon irons ?
I absolutely think performance wise Takomo are great irons. Personally, just waiting on a better look as I don't love the looks. But I don't have a great argument for why I would pay twice the price for Taylormade
Looks? Mate I couldn’t give a FF on looks! If I like the results they’re in the list.
I really want Takomo because of the price point but just am concerned about making the wrong shaft choice and not being fitted for lie angle.
great video
first...tee box shanks are my forte...
Rick, what about doing a Takomo 101 against Taylormade P790
What’s the odds Tacoma brings out a new 101 version for next season. Looking to buy my first new set of irons for myself. Been playing golf about 3 months so far with about 15 year old clubs.
Would these irons be more similar to an Apex pro or an Apex CB?
i have takomo 301cb and mb combo, the 301cb its most likely similar to the Apex CB
I want Takomo clubs
i would love to have a takomo set
Hey Rick, may sound stupid but where do you buy the takomo from?
@@michaelperry5006, I don’t know if Rick is buying them at all, but a regular Jhon Doe can buy the off Takomo’s website.
Takomo all day baby. Someday i'll be gaming them for sure.
Big brand R&D is a ton of bull...!!!! Just an excuse to come out with new clubs every single year, market them, and scam people into upgrading.
Wait, is Rick not wearing a polo or sweater? A new look? Looks quite relaxed and like an average golfer lol 😂 I did a double take because I didn’t think it was Rick at first, knew it was you bc of voice.
Can you do a 101t up against p770 comparison please
I’m deciding which ones to get next month I cant decide tho 😂😂
Currently playing speed blades and they will take a lot to beat them to be honest but they are getting old and a fancy a new set 😁
Wonder how much business you’ve just cost TaylorMade?! 😅 thanks for your reviews keep up the good work Rick!
Takomo: a lot more spin for 1° difference, and maybe much better control.
Send me a set good sir x
Please compare the P790 to the Takomo 101
There is no difference, except the price. The 101’s feel better and same distance as the P790. I’ve been playing the P790’s over 2 years. Hit the 101’s last weekend, very impressed. Thought about buying a set, just because of the price. The 101 iron I hit was an 8 iron with the KBS lite shaft regular.
Everyone seems hit to straight shots in the reviews, but how is the workability?
Can’t figure out what takomo I want ! I play older set of titlest AP- 1 712 They are over a decade old . I’m about 8-10 handicap . Someone help me out . 101’s are out for me 201 or 301 ? Shit 101t maybe ? I don’t know ahhhh
Who heard that "every fucking time" 😂😂
It's even worse in France, Taylor made are approx 1450/1550 EUR for 7 irons and the Takomos are 650 EUR.
My question is how will Takomo perform over time. A lot of time with these less expensive sets, they break rather quickly compared to the name brand.
Taylormade build quality is questionable
@@jooger69the amount of TM drivers I’ve seen with the faces breaking on them.
@@andybt3989 I had a brand new P790 UDI with a deformed face from the factory. Their QA isn't that great.
@@andybt3989, we are talking about forged iron clubheads. Drivers with all the fancy light-weight and multimaterial tech is a different story.
Rick's swing looks really solid at the moment. Whatever he's doing, he should stick to that.
At about the 7min mark did he says "every fucking time."? lol
He does :D
Lmao he does. Video Easter egg.
😂
😂 so when my little guy sits down next to me while im watching golf reviews he asks "daddy are there any bad words? Can i watch this with you?" "Naw man these are golf videos.. we're safe". I now have to tell him.. "yes son, there are bad words".. 🤣😂
“Inspired by your favourite TH-camrs”. Give me strength 🙄
The fact you give a spiel about choosing between the clubs based on who is sponsored by them rather than highlighting the fact that Taylormade gives you the opportunity to be custom fit shows just how unserious you are.
Hmm maybe I should sell my set of P790 now 😂 🎉
Taylor made is just a brand name …why pay double for the same performance?
For the skill level of the majority of us the Takomo Will do just fine. Everything else is just vanity
Taylormade certainly does not put £ 600 per every iron set purchase into r & d...
The price difference is because Taylor Made pays so many pros to use their Chinese clubs, Takomo doesn't.
Can you take the spoiler putter out on the course
Poor old Wilson, he didn't last long did he?
Better get then into the bag then Rick..
