Your truck and trailer set up and philosophy of having all your equipment with you is exactly like mine. I roll with a single axle Pete with a 46’ Viking trailer with mulches heads on my skid steer and my excavator with the extra buckets and grapple up on the top deck of the trailer.

Great idea about using the transit system that way. So I'm guessing you set the setting at the halfway point..? At the one foot marker and clamp it there.

I already own a skid steer. What I’m guessing I need to is a medium sized dozer? What do you think? The is pretty level but I think I want to build up about 12” so there’s no water in the barn. Would you rent an excavator or a dozer?

@@kylendmiller the reason I use my excavator to build pads is because It has the dozer blade. Attaching the transit receiver makes the final grading faster. I think getting a small dozer would make it faster and easier.
I have to build a pad for a pole barn on a decent slope, about 60’ long with 5’ of pitch. I have a large property i can scrape clay off of to compact, im also wondering if i can bring in sand and compact that in 12” lifts. Either way im going to spend some money making a flat area. Any advice would be appreciated.
I don't recommend using only sand for the foundation pad. Call your local government agency and ask for advice. They should be able to answer some of your questions. There are tons of videos on TH-cam that discuss the different compaction qualities of different soils. Good luck!

An excavator and a skidster is all you need to do all dirt work Unless it's bigger than a football field.

That sounds about right. This simple setup has been very helpful when I rough cut pads.

What’s the normal per hour rate for work like this?
It can vary. Depends on what I'm doing. My area starts at $125 per hour. I usually bid jobs by the day, but by the hour.

Building it up is a good idea with any pad. Sounds like a dozer would be a good option. Can you do all the dirt work with your skidsteer?

Is compacting with a skid steer will get it to 2000psf?
My tire machine does a good job during compaction. On larger pads that require several feet of lift, I use a vibrating compactor.
No they won’t achieve the necessary compaction. This is the cheap way to do it
