I was called all kinds of names and had a bad reputation, all because I refused to back down on my convictions. I raised my children to look at the person within, no matter who it was. I feel you... Growing up in rural South Carolina in the 80s and 90s was kind of rough for a kid with poor parents... Rougher still for a white kid who was hanging out with "those colored boys." I don't think any of the older white folks in the community that looked down on us ever understood that it was the black kids who never made fun of me. They never intentionally or unintentionally made me feel like less of a person. Not for being poor... Not for being fat... not for speaking my mind or for not letting anyone dictate who my friends were going to be. God bless parents like mine... And like yourself, for raising your children the right way even when it's not popular.

Who knows what he could have done had he not been killed so young.
Actually, I heard that Sam Cooke wrote this song because he was turned down from staying at a hotel in Louisville (I think that was the location) even though he had enough money to stay there but they turned him away because he was black. He was so upset about it all that he wrote this song in response to it

I enjoy watching you and your reactions. I was raised in Virginia and grew up hearing all kinds of music mostly gospel and Motown!_Living along side many different races. My family raised me to have manners be honest, respectful to my elders and others. Something else that they taught me was to know evil is always in the world and is in people from all walks of life and color, it is a problem within that person and their dissatisfaction with themselves. Most people do not even know why they hate someone or something. Sadly evil views, thoughts, deeds and people will be with us always: but if we all continue to expose ourselves to other people, cultures and be open to embrace differences we can do better and be greater in number than the evil people. Always loved this one. It's more than a song, it's an anthem, and a prayer. And we're still looking for that change. My dad was racist, but my sister and I rejected that. We were both musicians, and once when the black drummer from our band stayed over at our house, Dad dropped in while he was there and threatened to disown us. We didn't back down. He finally decided not to disown us, but he wasn't happy about it. Years later, he became friends with a black family that lived nearby, and finally admitted he'd been wrong. It only took him about 60 years to see it. Music is a wonderful thing to help people come together regardless of color or other differences. I know that things are getting better, but it's so slow. I feel like we should be beyond racism by now. It tears my heart every time I hear if another shooting or other violent incident, including unjustified arrests and harassment. I have great hopes for the next generation, the millennials don't seem to have nearly as much racial bias as previous generations. That's my hope, anyway.

I enjoy watching you and your reactions. I was raised in Virginia and grew up hearing all kinds of music mostly gospel and Motown!_Living along side many different races. My family raised me to have manners be honest, respectful to my elders and others. Something else that they taught me was to know evil is always in the world and is in people from all walks of life and color, it is a problem within that person and their dissatisfaction with themselves. Most people do not even know why they hate someone or something. Sadly evil views, thoughts, deeds and people will be with us always: but if we all continue to expose ourselves to other people, cultures and be open to embrace differences we can do better and be greater in number than the evil people. Not allow ourselves to be swayed by the media, music and manners of some , realizing one person does not ever represent the many. Many blessings to you and keep on with your honest reactions!

Always loved this one. It's more than a song, it's an anthem, and a prayer. And we're still looking for that change.
My dad was racist, but my sister and I rejected that. We were both musicians, and once when the black drummer from our band stayed over at our house, Dad dropped in while he was there and threatened to disown us. We didn't back down. He finally decided not to disown us, but he wasn't happy about it.
Years later, he became friends with a black family that lived nearby, and finally admitted he'd been wrong. It only took him about 60 years to see it.
Music is a wonderful thing to help people come together regardless of color or other differences.
I know that things are getting better, but it's so slow. I feel like we should be beyond racism by now. It tears my heart every time I hear if another shooting or other violent incident, including unjustified arrests and harassment.
I have great hopes for the next generation, the millennials don't seem to have nearly as much racial bias as previous generations. That's my hope, anyway.
