How can you memorize the position of a card in a deck without looking at every card before the game starts? I don't understand that bit. Maybe I'm just over thinking it, but it seems so much more involved than what Jane is saying.
I think I heard it somewhere that the deck has particular sequence starting out. All the decks have the same sequence so he memorised the sequence so when the cards are shuffling he concentrate on the cards and see which card is placed where so when distributing the card he knows who got which card.
I took a psychology class and we learned how to make memory palaces. They're actual things. Its totally possible to remember the entire order of a deck. If you look at a shuffled deck being bridged you can count which card goes into which and memorize the new order almost instantly. When the cards are then dealt out you count them to know which card comes next. Its totally possible, just very difficult to learn. (I can't do it but I understand the principles)
When a deck is being bridged it is when two halves of the deck are arched and put Into each other. You can watch how many cards go in on each side at a time and memorize the new order of the deck. Say you know the deck is A23456 and the halves are A23 and 456 then the bridge makes it A42536 you can memorize the new order by watching said bridge order the halves.
The memory palace is a life changing technique, but Jane would have had to see the unshuffled deck prior to the hand, and once it was shuffled he only would have known the odds of the spade not a guarantee of it.
The rocks to Lisbon represented 1 maybe as much as 3 months of labour. While for Patrick the value was unimportant; a half an hour to an hour of mild mental work .
So nobody else noticed Jane also has a spade flush to the queen? Obviously he doesn’t care if he wins so he folds and nobody else knows what he’s holding but I think that was a point of humility for him.
Sherlock will go on blabbering something which may be cool if you get it all at once, but really irritating if you want to watch something with peace of mind. That's where mentalist does a great job, Jane goes into the details of memory palace but pushes out at the right time by saying, " my point being", before the audience gets phased out. Fabulous writing that is.

You just need specific landmarks. It's also helpful to attach a number to the landmark in some cases, so you can immediately know what position an item is on the list without needing to visualize the entire path, and you can either use the actual number, or imagery. You can also use the visual technique without the palace part if you just need to remember one thing. Is there anyone who is using memory palace in their routine life... Or in study..?
It's not very practical in everyday life for memorizing complex things. I have read that it's more like an efficient memory organization system rather than "improved" memory, so if you're bad at remembering things, the memory palace will only slightly improve it. To use a memory palace explanation, if one can only remember a sequence of 10 items, in his memory palace he'll only have 10-11 rooms in which to put the items. So he won't remember more items, but might have an easier time recalling those 10 items.
In my experience, a better way to improve memory is to understand the meaning of the information to be remembered. For instance, I'm shit at remembering raw formulas, so I try to understand how and why the formula works, so when i need it I can more easily remember the arguments. Saved me on trigonometry and kinetics exams. Historical facts are easier to remember if you learn them as a logical sequence (X event in year X is the reason for/consequence of Y event in year Y). Mnemonic devices also help a lot
It's useful when you need to memorize a list of things in a specific order. Items, locations, even people's names. The reason it works so well is because it's a lot easier to remember something visual, especially if it's ridiculous. It's not hard to increase the number of items you can memorize with practice, all you need is an area that's clear in your mind that you can use to place the images. It doesn't have to be indoors, it can be outside, down a street, through town, and you can even trail them together, as long as it's something that's already ingrained into your mind, like where you grew up or where you currently live.
The more you do it the better you'll get at quickly coming up with imagery and committing it to your memory, and then actually remembering it. All this is is basically just a quick hack that's really easy to do, try it and you'll be surprised.
