    It’s honestly pretty cruel that they made abuse survivors relate so much to the Umbrellas only to end it with ‘actually yeah no you’re the source of all your problems and you’re better off dead’. Like it’s meant to be about heavily abused adult children learning to work through their trauma and come together, with their love for each other being the strongest force in the show. Then at the end it’s just. nah they aren’t worth it, die

    • @atlas956
      @atlas956 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +276

      i agree. i was expecting everyone to survive but lose their powers as implied, even though Reginald - the abuser who could not care less - thinks this way.
      the message SHOULD have been „you deserve a place for yourself in this world, there is people who love and support you even if the abusers didn’t, you deserve happiness even if it‘s hard to get there.“ for them to finally lose their powers, the thing that got them into all of this, but also a huge part of their identities, would have been so much more satisfying than what we got.
      the show used to care so much about mental health and how traumatised people hurt each other, i can‘t believe that they didn‘t take the obvious route, especially after how pretty much every single character has at this point each had an arc focused on finding their individual happiness and purpose.

    • @ivonnegallegos58
      @ivonnegallegos58 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +34

      I didn't get it as "they are not worth it", ai got it more like the marigold was never supposed to exist and durazno was like universe's response to balance things. The only way to stop creating apocalypse after apocalypse everywhere they go, was to sacrifice themselves (that wouldn't exist without the marigold) so everything would be in order again. They decided to be selfless and were true heroes by deciding to sacrifice themselves without anyone knowing which is sad but is what a true hero would do.

    • @tyler-df3wy
      @tyler-df3wy 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +172

      @@ivonnegallegos58 the show isn’t really about superheroes though, it’s about children who were forced to be superheroes trying to grow up and overcome their trauma. None of them asked to be heroes, Diego and maybe Luther are the only ones who’ve been invested in being a hero, and it’s clearly shown as a character flaw that they need to overcome
      Reginald treats them as living weapons whose only value comes from their powers, and it’s fundamentally ruined their view of themselves. The apocalypses are his fault, not the Umbrellas’: them sacrificing themselves to make up for his selfishness and abuse isn’t a good message. The Five café is literally the writers’ way of showing that the Umbrellas are always going to end the world so it’s just better for them to all die. And that’s despite the fact that they didn’t even choose to get their powers back, dickhead Ben forced it on them for. some reason. Their agency was taken away from them once again as they were forced to taken on the responsibilities that tore their family apart
      The marigold feels, to me, like a metaphor for abuse and all the excuses abusers use to justify what they’ve done - it’s to make them stronger, more powerful, more persuasive. Them ending the show by deciding to give up their powers and deciding to live as a family unburdened by the expectations their father forced on them would feel way more cathartic than the conclusion that they are just more trouble than their worth and that the world is better off without them. They aren’t superheroes who happen to be family, they’re a family that had powers forced upon them and they have to deal with the consequences of that

    • @atlas956
      @atlas956 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +73

      @@ivonnegallegos58 it’s not an in-universe criticism, more a meta comment on the writing choice. sure, they provide a justification for why they choose to die, but still narratively, it’s a very strange way to go. it so obviously conflicts with the positive messages from the previous seasons that i wonder who thought this was good. if they just die, and don’t really make a meaningful choice, then why does everything that happened since s1 matter?

    • @GEKGanon
      @GEKGanon 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +31

      I had a lot of problems with this season, but I think it is a tremendously bad take, maybe even a dishonest take, to say this season is about "abuse survivors being told the world is better without them". They spent three seasons, and most of this one, trying to fix someone else (Reg) breaking the world, and his attempts to break the world for his gain is why they were abused in the first place.
      This isn't "abuse survivors being told the world is better off without them", it is "abuse survivors realizing it isn't their burden to make their abuser's world work for him by figuring out how to circumvent the consequences of his actions".
      Of all the things this season did poorly, allowing a sacrifice to be an actual sacrifice wasn't one of them. It was nice to actually commit to the sacrifice, rather than going with the typical "No, they are actually all fine anyway!" trope.

For a series that was so focused on the effects of familial emotional abuse or just abuse in general really, having the ending be "welp, would've been better if we'd never existed" seems wildly wrong. On top of everything I hate about the Lila and five debacle, it was so out of character for THE BOTH OF THEM. A lot of people want to give five shit but Lila was also completely out of character. Lila loves Diego to the point that she chose her mother over him, came back from an independent life for him, genuinely fell in love with him and had MULTIPLE KIDS WITH HIM!! The fact that she would ever cheat on him is despicable. And don’t even get me started on Five. You’re telling me the man who spent 40+ years in an apocalyptic wasteland and dedicated every second of every day trying to get back to the present to save his family even though he could have definitely gave them up for the commission, would get with his brothers wife, hide a way to get back to his family despite doing everything to save them and be with them multiple times when found in another insane situation, AND have the audacity to be mad at Diego and even say things like “I want to kill him” yeah ok

      Exactly, it made absolutely no sense from a character perspective, took a ton of time away from the show that could've been used to expand on other things a bit better and then had no room for any emotional payoff at the end because they all just die, nothing was resolved.
      If for some reason they desperately wanted to have a slightly similar subplot they could've just done the same kind of montage but continuing the antagonistic sibling vibes interspersed with genuine moments of connection talking about their lives and worries. Then had a moment where they took a break from searching, got drunk and lonely, went to kiss each other, realise how wrong that felt, had an awkward laugh about it and swear never to tell the family when they find them. Honestly that would probably have given more room for genuine character development, discussion of their family relationships and a bit of comic relief in there too.

      I RETAIN that Five's decision would have worked much better if he had found the Five Diner BEFORE getting involved with Lila. It would give actual meaning to his "we could stay here" argument, because he would have seen the more nihilistic versions of him AND would know that everything he was doing was meaningless because even with a universe reset, they still end the world.

And ur comment aligns exactly w my ending. Imagine Five deciding not to give up on his family and try to save them just to realize there's no other way of saving the world than separating forever and having a hard time accepting it bc he spent like 60 years trying to go back to them and just 6 years and a few months by their side, but realizing this is for the best and is better to know they're all alive somewhere far away from him than watching them die all over again and that no matter where they all end up, they will always be a family.

It´s sad, because I love those characters, and they didn´t choose to get born like that and yet they still have to accept being erased. It´s unfair, but that´s life. I just wish this last season did a waaaay better job reaching that ending. Like... what was that? For starters, basically nothing they do has any impact, most of them aren´t even trying to solve the Ben situation. And they are all so separated and the characters that interact with each other more closely feel out of character. *cough* Five *cough* There is no way he would do that. Yes, that was my biggest frustration. I can accept 'heroic sacrifice' but it has to be ‘heroic’. It should be built up to, be emotional, be exciting, have you cheering them on even though you feel sad at what’s going to happen. But all I felt while they were vaguely standing in a circle being slowly engulfed by blob was the desire for it this slow dull scene and the show to be over already. I felt that the Umbrellas were so distant and even hateful of each other in that moment, they weren’t dying for each other or choosing dying together as a family, they were dying because plot said so.
      I genuinely felt that the apocalypse deaths in season two was so much better. You got to see them all using thier powers in a cool way while working together and then them standing together as the nukes go off. I felt more unity in that one scene that I did in the entirety of season 4.

    I loved this show so much. It sucks that the show basically ended with "you traumatized adults deserve to die bc you're always the problem". It felt like a completely different theme from the 1st season when even though Viktor caused the apocalypse, Five and everyone didn't leave him behind. But The Umbrella Academy didn't end as a superhero team, a family, or even normal people, they all just died. Also Five & Lila hooking up was a wild plot. IDK why they had to make Five betray Diego like that. If they wanted Five to fall in love, they could have just given him an unrelated gf or visually aged him up. I was so thrown off the last few episodes bc of it.

    Better ending: It's explained that Lila's parents still know her because all the marigold kids were always supposed to exist. The marigold just ripped them out of their correct time and forced their birth, some early and some later than they were meant to be born. And them being outside their correct time is why their mere presence causes apocalypses.
    So after their noble sacrifice, the marigold is erased from existence, and the marigold kids are reborn to their parents at the time they were meant to be born, without powers and utterly normal. Given the Christmas theme, the show ends on a New Years countdown where the Umbrella Academy arrives at various times separately, with their partners and any kids. They all look happy, maybe a couple bump into each other or walk past, but have zero recognition. They just continue on. The countdown happens, and Lila, being her chaotic self, grabs Diego out of the blue and kisses him for the New Year's kiss. They smile at each other after the kiss, implying they eventually get together.
    The show ends on the kids dancing to a song that starts playing with their partners, Diego dancing with Lila, so they have their dance sequence, together, but separate. A bittersweet ending, no longer siblings, but had normal happy lives.

    It truly felt like none of the characters were the people we knew. Allison spent all that time and effort trying to make it back to her daughter, yet when we meet her again she's been neglecting her relationship with Claire to persue her acting career.
    Victor felt like a totally different character whose emotional range solely extended to rage.
    Klaus has been reset almost every season to exactly where he started at season 1. The character delevopment we see from him gets erased for the sake of laughs. I don't think anyone was laughing when he was prostituting himself for heroin this season.
    I cannot even see Luther as number 1 anymore because of how incompetent he's become. The same goes for Diego.
    Five is possibly the biggest disappointment and deviation from the Five we've come to know over the seasons. His relationship with Lila made me genuinely uncomfortable. He made choices that did not allign with who we know him to be!! They all did!! This is one of the most frustrating and disappointing endings since Game of Thrones.

It shows once people are removed far enough from a serious event, they eventually go back to being who they always were. In season 1 she was doing that. Putting her career first, so over a period of time, she'd relax and go back to being that person. I think that's what some aren't understanding. My problem with the Lila/Five subplot was 100% how it was handled. Five should not have hated Diego, why tf would he? That's so immature and Five is too old for that nonsense. Old enough to know he's the one in the wrong, and feel GUILT, not entitlement. The scene where they return to the house should have shown Five seeing Lila with her family and kids and seeing his brother and feeling like a pos home wrecker, not acting like Diego somehow screwed HIM over. That was the part that made that whole subplot feel massively out of character and wrong to me. Everything before that coule have worked if they'd just stuck the landing, but at that point it started feeling like character assassination

    • @seoraorsmth1317
      @seoraorsmth1317 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +48

      I agree completely. I didn't hate the five-lila plotline, I still find it rather believable that being just the two of them for 6 years ended up with them finding comfort in each other and giving in to it. I don't agree with the reasoning they gave and the aftermath. Subway system is outside of their time, so I feel like they got used to missing their family, but with time desperation to get back this second might have worn out. If they have been there six years, couple more days or weeks or even months might not feel like a big difference - especially if they would be convinced that they will come back at exactly the moment they left. Beef Five had with Diego was nonsense, I think that Lila dropping Five no problem should have been a bigger theme - how heartbroken five should be over hurting his brother but also - how angry and hurt he would be by Lila pretending everything is cool and acting as if those six years didn't happen. There was plenty space there for emotional pay-off and for characters to try to do the right thing in the end.

      Agree 100%. That, and the whole storyline shouldn't have been shoved into a single episode (with a tiny bit of spillover into the finale). You need TIME for a relationship like that to develop. Sure, Lila and Five were together for 7 years, but we as the audience barely saw any of it!! And the Five from previous seasons WOULD have felt guilty, absolutely. And he wouldn't have blinked away from that fight either (OR fought his brother during a friggin boss fight, Five was always a "focus on the main issue" kinda dude so wtf was that?? Like I can see Diego getting distracted like that, but not Five...and even Diego fighting his brother during the boss fight is pushing it imo)

He cherished those 7 years with Lila (either way that relationship come from (lack of other human interaction, stuck in time with her etc.). In fact, the cheating thing actually seems more in tune with previous five than S4 five, who seems more genuine and soft. It took five years for something to happen between him Lila. Im sure he felt that guilt for so long. it seems like five had feelings for Lila ever since the beginning of the season. I’ll agree his hatred towards Diego is so unjustified? THANK YOU FOR CARING ABOUT LUTHER!!!! I found it so bizarre that they just swiftly bypassed what happened to Luther last season with Allison in favour of making him a joke and turning him into a being of levity for the sake of brushing that under the rug.
    Male SA is something that is commonly scoffed at and joked about so it's nice to hear you mention that that was messed up. And they portrayed it as such in the actual scene, but having them just promptly forget about it afterwards was so strange.

There is NO UNIVERSE in which Five would give up on his family like that, not even for love, and especially not for his BROTHER'S WIFE AFTER THE WRITERS SPECIFICALLY JOKED ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF IT BEING SO ABSURD. I saw a comment on a vid stating how f'd it is that the end to a traumatised family (people who live with trauma) was that they should off themselves so that everyone else could live, and that the world would be better off without them, and my world shook at reading that comment! The message for the ending of this series is truly f'd.
    What should have happened (which someone else made a comment on) was that Five figured out that he was the one who f'd up the timeline (and not the fam) and he had to go back in time to stop himself from going to the future. Tell the fam to get rid off/seal away Reginald (like what he did with Viktor) eventually leading them to heal from their collective trauma and live semi normal lives.
    But alas, the UA ended at S3 so we'll never knw.

    • @emstink
      @emstink 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

      Right?? I felt like that's sort of where it was going in season 1. It ended with them all in their child forms looking at each other. And according to the writers, that wasn't what was actually happening, it was just "symbolism". So what can we take the symbolism of everyone holding hands and being a child to mean? That when they were together, as a team, back when they were children, things were okay and hopeful and had a chance to improve (as long as Reggie was out of the picture!!)
      So with that logic, I kept thinking, oh, they need to fix their childhood, oh, the apocalypse keeps happening because the damage has been done and they need to fix their childhood, oh, the universe is falling apart because they were exploded by Harlon or whatever his name was and they didn't fix their childhood, they must have to fix their childhood. Surely the logical thing is that they need to be a family and fix their problems together BEFORE Five ran away and Ben died and Viktor was abandoned??
      And I hear you say "well isn't that kind of rude to irl traumatised people, to say that the only way you could live a happy life would be if you went back in time and stopped the traumatic incident?" NO because the family will still be traumatised. Five doesn't have to go back to a clean slate. They literally showed us IN THE FIRST EPISODE that Five can send an older consciousness back into its younger body... Because he's in his child form. Why can't he do that with all of them? Drop the decimal and send their consciousnesses into their child bodies. They're traumatised but they can have a fresh start and stick together this time so no one dies. They can give themselves a normal childhood with a lovely robomother and a chimp dad. Wouldn't that be coming full circle and kind of clever - if a bit obvious - writing??

    Just a few things I noticed that you didnt get to hit on:
    -Reggie erasing the kids' minds seems like something he would do, but he couldn't erase Ben's mind so how would Ben not know how he died or not ask what happened to the little girl named Jennifer he was trying to save?
    -How did Jennifer end up in the squid? Why a squid? How is Ben related to the squid? Why did she know about the Cleanse? How did the Durango get inside her? Does she have Durango powers, or is she just normal with a chance to blow up the world?
    -What about the other Marigold kids that are out there in the world? Surely there were others who could have been alive in the other timelines with powers, and they just never came back to that idea, only the ones Reggie ever got
    -When Five and Lyla go to their first alternate universe, they run past a future apocalypse Five, meaning that's a timeline that had Five in it and he got stranded. But when they go back in time, the other kids don't recognize Five, which they should because they had a Five. That one's just a mistake.
    -If Gene and Jean have evidence of alternate timelines and especially the alternate versions of the Umbrella kids, why wouldn't they... go visit them? Like, they have evidence of Alison Hargreeves being an Umbrella Kid, and they know what she'd look like as an adult from her acting gigs, AND she's an actress in this world who has an agent and a phone number. They should be able to find her relatively easily.
    That's all I got for now, but wow what a letdown

      "-What about the other Marigold kids that are out there in the world?"
      Yeah, I was also wondering about that. Also, in Season 3, Harlan killed the Umbrella kid's mothers so they were never born in that timeline. Why didn't that fix the timeline if all it needed was for them to not to be born/have marigold particles in one timeline? Was it because Harlan had some of Victor's marigold particles so they weren't entirely erased? Which brings us back to the issue of the other marigold kids still existing...

      Abt the squid, my best guess is that it was to either represent Ben or be Ben from another timeline that used his powers to turn into a full squid, maybe to protect Jennifer from drowning... But that's if we ignore the fact that the director turned mindless and probably didn't even have a real reason for it.

      And that Reginald bringing his wife back out of love, not killing Jennifer and delaying shooting Ben because of 'goodness' was a bad thing that ended the world.

    I agree with everything apart from the ending: almost every apocalypse was completely avoidable and exclusively caused by the trauma that they had suffered (i.e. Viktor destroying the world in s1, or Grace (herself an abuse victim) becoming obsessed with the time rip in the basement in s3) so for me the natural conclusion was always supposed to be that they learn to start fully healing from their trauma and literally severing the cycle of abuse. The cycle of apocalypses felt narratively like the cycle of abuse.

    The ending killed me, it could’ve been so much better. They could’ve blipped everyone to the subway and have Victor take all of his sibling’s marigold, he would have a tearful goodbye knowing that he would finally be the hero he wanted to be. In the midst of Victor taking the sibs marigold, Five disappears seemingly not wanting to lose his powers. The family reluctantly enter the train as the door closes, Five comes back, and flashes Diego an apologetic look, Diego looks back realizing he is sacrificing himself for him and Lila. Victor looks on in confusion, Five remarks, ‘All I’ve ever known is apocalypse, each moment in between them I lose people I love.’ He wistfully looks at Lila as the train speeds away, looks down and mutters, ‘Enough’. He then clutches Victor and blips them to Victor’s empty bar. Unsteady Victor pours 2 glasses of whiskey, he slides one over to Five and sits next to him. The bar slowly is enveloped in flames, Victor looks over to Five and remarks, ‘ So apparently the only way to get you to come to Canada is an apocalypse, eh.’ The two dissolve into laughter as they are engulfed in the cleanse. The timeline collapses to reveal glimpses of the remaining academy members lives, Lila and her family clapping at Diego’s law enforcement graduation, Allison directing her daughter in a school play, Luther dropping a textbook about astronomy, only for it to be picked up by Sloan, and Klaus walking into a dispensary,only to go behind the counter. We hear a bell and a customer enters, Klaus looks up as the customer asks him what he recommends, Klaus states, ‘ The Bennifer blend is pretty pungent but will make you see the dead or White Violin it starts out timid but has a powerful crescendo.’ As he finishes speaking the camera slowly pans over to a marigold covered picture frame with remaining members of his family smiling dressed in Umbrella Academy costumes at a birthday party. Though that ending is really because of the poor season 4 choices.

His betrayal of Diego felt extremely out of character. Same with Lila even though she mentioned a break. They were in this rut but we knew her and Diego still cared about each other. The only things I don't like about the Baby Shark bit is that it goes on for a bit too long when the season is already short enough as it is and it's the only song I can remember from this season at all.

    What I hate is that everyone went back to what they were on s01...
    The growth they had during the show, went away or got worse, so the end we got felt unsatisfactory for this reason.

      Klaus's character development really pissed me off. Like oh, he gets his powers back and IMMEDIATELY is just like, welp, I'm off the wagon...? I think that's one of the areas where the show felt super rushed. There could have been like half to a full episode of Klaus trying to stay clean with his powers back and finding he just can't do it before relapsing. His response to that felt like it had little to nothing backing it. This was made worse because most of his story following his relapse felt like filler in a season that didn't have time for filler stories. They could have spent the same time they spent with him being a sex medium instead dealing with him fighting his addictions. (Seriously, did that side plot of Klaus's have ANYTHING to do with the main plot of the season? Please remind me if I'm forgetting something.)

      Yeah the ending of the show pretty much makes every other season worthless in terms of what they fought for

    Isn’t that enough?
    I liked that idea.

    23:30 The really frustrating part of this for me was that like. The reason that he couldn't have his powers and be sober before wasn't that his powers just made him into an addict; like the issue was that his powers are horrifying and that he struggles to deal with them without chemical assistance. S4 completely forgets that. His dad locked him in a mausoleum--like a spacious aboveground crypt--and he came out so traumatized he could barely function for decades. He gets literally *buried alive* and the only spirit that shows up is Thunderbolt.
    Also like Klaus' accusations aimed at Alison are, like... They're unfair, and he's clearly saying them to hurt her in the moment because he's deeply angry about having his effective DNR disrespected (gets even funnier given where the show ends up), but they're not exactly inaccurate. She does care about him, but she's also absolutely using him to feel morally superior, and her reaction to Klaus relapsing pretty clearly demonstrates that (and then Clair starts spouting some real Twitter "it's okay to cut people out of your life" discourse; I get that Clair doesn't know that her mother was ostracized for a reason or that she's a kidnapping victim but it's wild that the writers seem to have believed that would come off well). The fact that the show seems to want us to believe that Alison is in the right is insane.

      You know, everyone is glossing over that Lyla is kind of their sister, too. Same as the S1 Luther/Allyson ick - quasi incestuous love triangle,yuck.

    I agree with every single sentence!!! The kids thing really had me confused. Lila had kids! And she just didn't care.... Until she did! 😂 Thank you for validating my confusion!

      It wasn't particularly well written but I think the idea was that Lila had simply given up on the idea of ever seeing them again after so much disappointment.
      I suppose the problem with this season being so short was that we had to do a lot of the writers' work for them.

    My Big issue with the Jennifer Incident is that it makes no sense in-universe. So Reg is this brilliant alien that unleashed Marigold and knows of the Durango and it's effect.
    So why tf does he sent his kids (and all their marigold) to Jennifer in the first place, especially if it takes him minutes to just pop up in that shipping yard and kill the two of them himself.
    He could just go there and do the job himself?! It makes no sense

    Of all the things I expected from this, incredibly bad quality Five/Lila adultery fanfiction was not on the list anywhere. In fact, it would have been at the top of the "haha ew no won't ever happen" list. I-I don't understand... WHO... WHO THOUGHT...

    One thing that keeps baffling me that I haven’t heard anyone touch on yet….Soooo when Allison made her deal with Reginald, did she get a Ray that was familiar with modern technology, modern world, etc??? Or did he just go on his merry way, totally ignorant but still inexplicably done with the lady who brought him to this time???? Not to mention…was he actually the father of Allison’s daughter now??? Cuz you’d think he’d be around right? At least you can argue that daddy Patrick cared enough to wanna take custody even….but daddy Ray doesn’t feel the same I guess? Or was he just a former stepdad in this timeline?

    I think the worst part is all the unanswered questions. Where was Sloane, and why did season 3 end with what appeared to be a "different Ben" only for them to skip over it(for the most part). Disappointed in how it all clued up to say the least.
    Edit: It also had the weakest Klaus side quest in any season...

    • @AmandaTheJedi
      @AmandaTheJedi  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +32

      I had my theory of why Sloane wouldn't be there validated in interviews but then Steve Blackman said he still would have liked to include her but didn't have time. But her not being programmed into the reset is the most logical response.

    • @trinaq
      @trinaq 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      @@HighGuyy420 Agreed on both counts. Maybe Genesis Rodriguez couldn't commit to filming, but Sloane meant so much to Luther, you'd think that it'd be mentioned that he'd tried tracking her down. And it was hard to care about Ben and Jennifer's plot, when we barely even knew her.
