  • While decently tenanted, Kentucky Oaks Mall is what I would consider the darkest chapter in our Kentucky adventures thanks to its post-modern interior. Can you tell I'm not going to be a fan of it?

    Doomie, I love the opening music on this video. For split second I thought I had stumbled across a sequel to the cult classic “Chopping Mall” Which if you or any of your other fans have not seen you definitely need to watch it. I’m sure it’s streaming somewhere.
    I also enjoyed seeing the loan girl standing out front, smoking a cigarette, wondering if she’s always gonna be stuck in Paducah, it added a deeper level of pathos.
    I’ve actually been in this mall when I originally moved to Florida 24 years ago. I remember thinking that it was a really nice mall, at that time, for Paducah Kentucky. Was not expecting that. We stayed at a hotel right by here on our way through. I’m glad to see that it’s still going.

    It's sad to see the old girl looking the way she does. KOM was my mall in the 1990s, when I was a teenager. Having also spent that same time hanging out in the Beverly Center, I still preferred KOM over it. I guess you had to be there to see just how exciting the mall was, even on Monday mornings. I miss that time so much, because the mall and its surrounding stores were the centerpiece of fun and recreation in the region. I haven't been there in over 20 years, but seeing this video helps me appreciate what we once had. I'm happy it's still open and going well, but it'll never match up to what it was, so long ago.

    Being local to this mall, it’ll have a special place in my heart. Though I remember Villa Pizza and the sandwich place that was in the spot of Hugo’s. I hope the empty holes get filled with something to really bring people to it.

    The thing about paducah's population is that it only gives the city limits population. but if you count the heath area, lone oak, reidland areas that everyone just says they are from paducah anyways it is more like 100K so the mall can be sustained between that , the fact its the biggest shopping area within an hours drive or more plus the location, the interstate I-24 is a major national connecting interstate.

      as far as Tornado's are concerned, Paducah is like a bowl, the downside is it floods easier but tornadoes usually go right over

    I go here when I’m visiting from Florida. It’s an awesome little mall. Lots of stores and restaurants. It’s better than most malls in the US

    As a native, it looks to me like you're either there b4 open or after close. Since the rona most shops close at 7pm even tho the mall itself is open til 9. Maybe come by during actual business hours so you can see all the people shopping at the stores while they're actually open...

    Worked at this mall in the 80s. Was a very busy place on Friday nights. All of us teens would meet at the arcade. So much fun ! This generation doesn't know how to live. Always on their phones.

    PLEASE NOTE: The following was filmed during the mallwalker hour. and no, I'm not gonna go back. Mallwalker hour was the only time that'd work in my schedule without cutting it out of the initial road trip entirely, and to be blunt, I can't bring myself to like a mall with a dreary depressing color scheme, regardless of crowds and stores.

    I'm really shocked Dillard's would block off their mall entrance, here. I wonder why they'd bother doing that, here? Kentucky Oaks is a very healthy mall, and NOWHERE near dead.

      The same thing is occurring at my local mall. Many stores are closing mall entrances to decrease shop lifting and they don't have the staff to man these entrances.

    I mean, at least it's not Hull. It's aesthetics leave a bit to be desired, but I'll take a Cafaro over a Hull any day.
    (And yes, Northern Virginia's traffic is the worst!)

    • @BoratWanksta
      @BoratWanksta 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cafaro's interior mall designs to me, leave things to be desired for me. That said hey, you're right at least it isn't a bland 'Hullway' mall! And I also find it interesting this mall once had a Venture (think a regional discount chain like Bradlee's, Jamesway, Ames, Magic Mart, etc), store, since I grew up going to their stores myself.
      I can't forget Hull's sin, that I REALLY hate then drywalling over vacant store spaces to hide them. Good thing Cafaro doesn't seem to have that bad habit, of doing this.

  • @klax2919
    @klax2919 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    the exposed ceiling to the finished ceiling does not work here to me the finished ceiling its just to bland. plus i just don't care for the dark floor it just makes the place seem so uninviting especially by the rue 21. but you have shown worse malls than this one.

    • @craigjensen6853
      @craigjensen6853 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it's strange for sure. I'm sure it was originally all drop ceiling and those skylights weren't original (you can tell by the way the roof trusses are configured), so it's almost like they experimented with that design in that one corridor to maybe remove the ceilings in the rest of it someday. Those light fixtures are from within the past few years. But then again, the remaining drop ceilings are also fairly new (certainly newer than 1982), they didn't make that particular reveal tile or light fixtures back then.
      I agree about the floors too, in general I hate carpeting in malls. Doesn't take long to look like crap. Mall developer A. Alfred Taubman was dead against it, he wanted shoppers feet to have as little friction as possible.

  • @iworkout6912
    @iworkout6912 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Actually I kind of think this mall looks like one of the better malls you have covered. Not sure I like the carpets, but that is a personal taste of having a carpets on the mall floor. Sure its got empty spots, but most malls do now with a limited number of stores that seemed to be in the malls. I saw a Spencer Gift, I didn't know they were still around. So Doomie, your right that the people who live in Paducah will have to help point where it goes from here. I have been through Paducah on the interstate, which is the way most of us see the cities now, aware of the city, but not stopping. Will be interested in the Louisville malls, as I lived there for a few years.

    A fairly serviceable mall. With the exception of the Burlington corridor with the FYE and Retro Spencer's it is pretty bland. A lot of corporate chains are holding on so that is a good sign for the mall.

    Not a bad mall. I get Ohio Valley Mall vibes from this place. I may have to check this out in the near future! Also upon looking a Google Maps there is a former Best Store across the street that is still abandoned. Surprised to see that.

    I know you must be there during mall walking hours but I am seeing a lot of stores without any markings. There are a lot of openings? The further in I watch this video, the more vacant stores I see. It looks to me like it is struggling a bit. Louisville, that is my hometown. Let's see those malls.

      This is our mall actually, and it is a little bit. It's gotten a lot better though. There were no "Home Goods" or "5 And Below" and others. Lots are new, but then other small stores moved out. It's better than nothing!

    The food court kind of looks like it was hapazardly added to the mall, kind of look how Concord Mall (Delaware)'s food court looks. I wonder if it's original or they just kind of put one in.

    I've been to this mall. Pretty nice, good Dillard's, though not as good as the one in Mall St Matthews in Louisville. Paducah's mall gets a lot of business because it's the only shopping in that area. Shoppers come in from Tennessee and Missouri.

  • @pheerbeard
    @pheerbeard 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The long, mostly straight and somewhat narrow windowless concourses made me imagine this being the shopping area of some huge orbiting space station. Anyways, a well tenanted mall raises more questions for me than a dead mall. Who shops here? What makes someone hop in the car to go to a mall versus ordering the item online, especially with easy returns most online places offer? I'll admit that ordering online is the first thing that comes to mind for me unless it's food or there's some kind of extreme urgency. I like watching these videos but I myself haven't been to a mall in years.

    • @cherishedhoney6598
      @cherishedhoney6598 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, a lot of people do. It's about the only mall within the area. Probably 50 miles around or more. We have to drive 45 minutes to get to it. Haha

      I know this is old, but there aren’t really a lot of other things to do in Paducah lol high school kids hang out here if they want to hang out in person, older people walk it to get their exercise in without the blistering heat or ice cold, and it allows people to inspect products before buying them and then having access to them right then. Hopefully this gives some insight!

    I remember when I saw this Mall when I was there the first time. They only had a few of the stores open at the time back in the eighties. It's improved itself over the years from what I see in the video. It was just waking up in the eighties. Very boring at first. In your video the mall has grown up to be beautiful. I remember the Chick FIL a. It was the first restaurant to move in. I hope you got to see their quilt shop in Paducah KY.

      As a local,It's not going to be abandoned. I was there a few weeks ago and it was packed as normal in the afternoon. Kmart was a stand alone store in lone oak,and that was abandoned unfortunately. The mall itself is still thriving and doing well for itself,and still a frequent visit for me to hang out with friends
