Hard to believe this location was a massive mobile home park before the mall was built.

The second floor of Gwinnett Place mall originally didn’t have that nasty carpet. It had beautiful shiny red brick floors. The bars inside the second floor guard rails weren’t that nasty light green color. It was white. Most 90s redesign of an 80s mall is usually an ugly mistake. Gwinnett Place is an example. But, the original design of the interior of Gwinnett Place mall was and still is spectacular, especially at night when all the decorative lights are working. Aces Adventures did a video of this mall at night with most of the lights working a few years ago. You should check it out.

I worked there for a couple of years when it first opened, and I recall so little of the decor. I guess when you think something will be around forever you don't take much notice. I had other things to focus on, like flirting, lol.

UGHHH! I really wish I could experience this mall in the 80s and 90s I went to this mall in the 2010s when it was still decent but slowly watched it die especially in 2020 really sad

I don't know why but seeing how things have changed over the past 30-40 years makes me feel really sad. I didn't love everything about malls but I do miss getting out and about in the community like we used to. Malls were fun places to spend a Saturday afternoon.

On opening day the Berkmar High School Symphonic band, located at the south end of Pleasant Hill road, played for an hour during the opening. The Gwinnett Coral society also sang there. I graduated from Berkmar High School in June 1983 and my mom sang in the Gwinnett Coral society. If the opening of Gwinnett Mall hadn't been delayed, I would have been playing the drums the opening day.

My earliest view of the mall was when then-Davison's first post was going into the construction - the first corner of the mall erected. The rest was Georgia clay and construction vehicles on the cleared land. I got hired at Sears and worked there for a while as well as a little art shop called Roderick's at the other end. I had no idea Macy's was still open; I will definitely go have a look through into the mall this week or next! Lots of good memories there; I was sad to find it had closed. I've never watched Stranger Things; maybe I will. There was definitely a Spencer's gifts there; I don't think it was very close to the food court though. We used to go to the Belgian waffle place on our morning break from Sears - I still remember those fat warm waffles dripping in syrup. At the other food court by Rich's (I can't remember if there were two food courts or if it moved) there was a Gyros downstairs and a Chick Fila upstairs.

Behind the food court entrace is where most of the interior mall shots for stranger things was filmed. The Starcourt sign seen in the middle of the interior mall shots is actually the original Food Court sign but it was rebranded to say Starcourt for filming. I also have many pictures from the Stranger Things filming as I snuck into the set and took some pics of it.

The food court wing has been completely destroyed, painted over, remodeled for a Paramount movie set, Secret Headquarters unfortunately.
This video is extremely well done with amazing music choices, I appreciate the in-depth history and photos shown.

Back in 2021 when I was at the middle school down the street from the mall my teacher told us all about the area in the 80s and 90s and how amazing and popular the mall was. She said how there really wasnt anything in the area but once the mall opened so many people came and how the area grew

EXCELLENT VIDEO, I WAS COMMITTED FOR THE WHOLE 30 MINUTES. I WOULD LOVE FOR YOU TO HAVE SEEN IT IN WHEN IT FIRST OPENED. IT WAS SO BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL AND I THINK IT EMPLOYED HALF THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN GWINNETT.

If you liked seeing Gwinnett Place Mall, Underground Atlanta might be interesting to check out. It also has a rich history and I think most of the stuff has closed, maybe even the MARTA station. You'll probably hear the neon signs hum in certain places, it's interesting to check out, but it may be dangerous so go with others

I'd say part of what killed this mall was the larger just outside of Atlanta to the north Mall of Georgia. The Mall of Georgia killed off a lot of malls including the one that posed ast Starcourt Mall in Stranger Things.

Mall of Georgia and also Discovery Mills (now Sugarloaf Mills), both of which took huge numbers of customers away, and opened about a year apart. Also, Gwinnett Place Mall hurt itself when it remodeled a couple of decades ago, removing majestic fountains and spending a huge fortune to plain it up, to make it look more like a Big Box Store with generic boring everything internally. AND finally, culture changed: in the 80s folks were sociable with each other and teen and adults all used malls as if they were public parks for loitering, creating a place to hang out all day or all weekend. Teens were actually dropped off at malls in the 80s to spend all day, like a baby sitter. In the 90s that changed to malls being a place specifically to shop, not a replacement for a public park, those loitering at malls became considered as juvenile delinquents or creeks. So folks got there, shopped as quickly as possible, didn't hang out, and got home quick. In the 80s folks would say they were "going to the mall" (to hang out). In the 90s "going to the mall" meant shopping, frequently in a way less efficient manor, so it became a pejorative to shopping. So a response might be, "oh no, why don't you go to the _____ [big box store] instead!!"

You can get a view into the mall from Macy’s and Mega Mart. The actual mall is closed to the public and I would not recommend entering as it is monitored and has gotten people in trouble! Not to mention, it’s government owned.

Nice video man! By chance have you checked out the galleria over in the Cumberland Mall area? I grew up at that mall in the early 2000s and Aces adventures finally did a video on it, you should definitely go check it out before I get demolished next year. I really like your style man! I will definitely be subscribing, and if you ever need any advice on anything Mall related here in Atlanta please let me know because I spent the entire years of 2018 19 and 20 doing research and visiting all the malls in Atlanta within 100 miles

My family and I lived just a few miles from the Mall. I remember a ton about it, even when the Parisian addition was added, the addition and demolition of the Warner Brothers Store, the bustling food court, and so much more. Fair well GPM, you’ll be remembered. 🫡
