Absolutely awesome video man. Francis Scott Key Mall was my childhood mall, and I have very fond memories of going to that mall. Getting a pretzel, hanging out by the fountain and relaxing, those were the times. Having grown up in Frederick, I absolutely love that city myself and miss it almost every day. It really makes me happy to see FSK both unbastardized to this day _and_ thriving!

Mall of America is in the process of suing the organization that took over Sears assets. They signed Sears to a 100 year lease with $10 a year rent. Sears has 70 years left with $700 rent due and controls a whole corridor. MOA is suing to break the contract. What mall agrees to a century contract? My local mall is building a huge supermarket as an anchor. So I think this will be more popular in the future.

The problem with grocery stores in malls is who gets to chase all the shopping carts down? You know they will end up everywhere in the mall

Here in Montreal we have quite a few popular malls with grocery stores and everything functions perfectly. I can see this working out in other places too.

@@ms.zelman3032 Chicago Ridge Mall(in the southwest suburbs of Chicago) has an Aldi. But yeah, that might be the only US mall I can think of, that has a grocery store AND even has an inside mall entrance.

Aldi charges .25 cents for a cart. If you want .25 cents back have to bring cart back. So far this seems to be working.

@@BoratWanksta The Valley View Mall in La Crosse WI recently got a Hy Vee. But yes Grocery stores in malls are very rare in the US. Australian malls I know they are fairly common there.

I was passing through Frederick yesterday, and stopped at the FSK mall. I was pleasantly surprised to see it still maintains high occupancy, especially for this time of year. I came here looking for confirmation of the 90's renovation, and possibly pics from before. I had a feeling that the soft pastel floor colors probably meant a 90's renovation.

The big thing I love about this mall are the curves. The design is smooth and neat. Pleasant for sure.

You need to visit Chicago Ridge Mall, then! Since there is AT LEAST one mall in the US, that has a grocery store with even an inside mall entrance. In the case of that mall, it has an Aldi store. And yes, that mall is VERY healthy, with it even having both H&M and(more recently) Dick's. Agreed that malls with grocery stores and non-clothing(and more general merchandise, save for rare malls that had Dollar General like Rolling Acres way back in the day) stores, still are too rare to come by.
Thanks for the tour, of Francis Scott Key Mall. You are right, that this is a charming mall. It's VERY interesting the Sears here survived, all the way till late 2022 without a store closing announcement.

So many great memories. I worked in both FSK and Frederick Towne mall in the mid/late 90s.

Here in Montreal, Quebec most popular malls actually have grocery stores, especially most malls in downtown Montreal. Alexis Nihon Plaza, Cote des Neiges Plaza, Complexe Desjardins, and the Rockland Centre. All these malls have IGA except for Cote des Neiges Plaza which has a gigantic Asian grocery store named Fu Tai.

In Australia we have at least one or two supermarkets in our malls depending on the size of the mall
They don’t really fit in but are so convenient

when I was growing up in the 70s and 80s I used to make fun of my parents about their reminiscing about malt shops etc. Now I understand. These malls are like a whole lifetime ago.

Our thoughts and prayers remain with everyone affected by the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse in the Baltimore area which is around 50 miles east of the mall. The video was filmed before the bridge collapsed.

I pranked people here in the mid 2000’s, bought my wife’s engagement ring here in the 2010’s, and now my 18mo old daughter plays in the Barnes and Noble. Love this mall.
I did go to the movies at Fredrick Towne Mall in the 90’s though.

The JCPenney was one of 3 former Leggett stores that didn't make it to the Belk conversions, the other 2 being Manassas Mall and Dover Mall in Delaware.

Yes, I did see this mall before in another video. I really like this mall and I think that it deserves to keep surviving and thriving. I like the fountain and the skylights along with the 2 pillars at the JC Penney entrance.

late 90s/early 2000s i used to work across the street from there. my coworkers and i would often go to the mall on our lunch breaks, or after work. i spend so much time in the mall between the ages 17-22. it was always the better mall of Frederick. the one on 40 was always bad, even in the mid 90s.

Both Fredrick and Gaithersburg have similar populations around 70,000 or so yet one keeps supporting it's mall while the other did not. I wonder what were the factors involved in that.

I think the Clarksburg Premium Outlets, long-term, were the biggest reason for Lakeforest's downfall.

People who go food shopping generally aren't going to do extensive mall-type shopping on the same trip. For one thing, they'd have to do the food shopping last, as many items are perishable and bulky.

    • @ms.zelman3032
      @ms.zelman3032 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Yes, I understand what you're saying, but at the same time if there is a huge grocery store in a mall that has more variety I'm pretty sure that more people would stop by for that reason alone and the mall in general would be slightly more packed. Just a thought.
