I focus on getting up in the morning when I get in bed at night. Really helps me sleep faster!

    • @peterlee9691
      @peterlee9691 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

No way, focusing too much on anything before bed keeps your mind busy & active, keeping you awake. To be unconscious you need to release all thoughts and relax your mind so the body can rest. That's probably why we need to first close our eyes to sleep, with zero focus.

2:28 simplistic assessment. Why assume that it changed their mindset rather than their body mechanics? When you walk you often look down. When you look down your head is tilted down. Where your head goes your body goes, so your posture will be oriented relatively more downward. This may explain greater joint or knee pain and slower pace, but what it even considered?

This is interesting. You're not just beating yourself over the head with positive thoughts. You're changing your focus, so your self narrative will change.

  • @chrishb7074

Focusing upon a consistent visual target - such as a finish line, allows the proprioception sense to update more frequently and accurately. With a more precise measure of where you are and the state of your balance, then your motor cortex can make better decisions of how much strength to direct to each part of your motion. This would of itself be enough to produce significant performance gains, using better balance, body control and frequent small corrections to your path in every step down the track. These are fairly universal features common to most animals with half-decent eyesight and the urge to get and not become dinner.
It doesn’t require high-level cognitive narratives about motivation or wish-fulfilment as a necessary cause of better mechanical function, although such ideas can become fashionable for selling novel self-help products and services.

That would be especially important on a technical trail or even a mountain pass where losing focus could see you off a cliff. This actually happened in one of the races at UTMB in 2021, with fatal results. Try focusing on the finish line while running across a button grass plain.

While it is true that “we all create our own reality” - what we do is the reflection of our mind-set, both individually and collectively.
Nonetheless, if exercise is the aim for maintaining/improving health (to manage daily physical and mental activities with ease), then keeping on the fast-running exercise regime will overdone the original goal.

All very well in a race setting but most people making a new years resolution to get fit aren't entering the London Marathon now are they? They just want to start walking each day to get healthy and constantly focusing on the finish line (say 3 miles) is off putting and most won't end up doing it. Instead (and it's what I do) put some music on and forget about the actual act of walking or how far and just enjoy music as you walk. By the time you've listened to an Oasis album you've covered 3 miles and are back home. Those wanting to get fit and healthy are not concerned with how fast they are doing the exercise (as this video demonstrates) but rather just the act of doing the exercise itself and getting it done, and constantly focusing on the finish line is not conducive to that.

Nice tip, but also unnecessary - as in not strictly necessary, just like a driving ambition to beat your 2km time can propel you along if you can't find a better way.
Yes, 2km run. Actually maybe that should be you 1km run?
And relax! Of course you don't have to run the whole bloody way! Ever! You're welcome to do it if you develop such an inclination, but it's no biggie if you never do.
And now, by these oblique manoevres, I have arrived at the point that makes this presentation, on the whole, destructive, rather than constructive (even though it contains a nice tip for people who've decided to smash some record into the ground until it stops twitching, and can't bleed any more than it has).
Destructive? That sounds a bit harsh. I mean it's the kind of presentation that is more likely to destroy most people who avoid exercise' motivation to ever do so. (It's also destructive, very slightly, in promoting the world view of the people who get things done, these days - because we unfortunately don't have many better ways of achieving this, but I'll leave that version of smashing-to-the-ground out of the rest of this, since it's not a necessary point.)
So now all the Very Clever Children already know the answer to the question, and are waving their hands frantically in the important quest to be The One selected to spit it out to everyone else. Are you one of those Very Clever Children? Or are you a bit slow. Not quite up to scratch. The ones we censor the bad words describing, but not the attitudes that go with the bad words. Since that's probably not possible, since in the end we're all just apes, so one should not expect too much of us - which is a detour to get off right now.
OK you've had enough time to figure out what's wrong with the presentation. Simple: It makes the fundamental mistake of equating "Sport" with "Exercise". Just like our schools do. (Just like people who construct proper sentences do?) It starts that early. We have people to teach the kids "exercise" (well done! what good humans you are!) whose initial qualification for this is that they Love Exercise - the feeling when the ball bangs into the back of the net, the little kick you get when you dribble past the centre forward, the burn and challenge of that marathon. And so on. The logical person to teach exercise is someone who loves sport. Makes sense.
But there's also someone who quickly found out that football is where you stand there while the captains fight over who has to have you on their team. If you look at the number of people taking a run vs the number of people who can find some expression of disgust to condemn this running nonsense when they see a runner, I think you'll find the numbers for whom sport (as in some Athlon) has been a neutral or negative aspect of life are greater than those for whom it was the key to all the doors.
Hey, that's life. Deal with it. Of course. But if you preach exercise to people who know deep down inside that it's "bad", you're wasting your breath, surely?
And the kind of exercise the health profession should be promoting? "Just do it". But that sounds too ambitious. Just do Something.
That's it. Do whaddever; do it regularly; be careful not to overdo it. It's actually *EASY* .
I could go into detail, but I've already gone into much too much detail/ argumentation.
So? Please tell me I smashed that bum idea to pulp (i.e. crushed it). I need your approval.

I can corroborate with anecdotal evidence. This video just described how I went from running 100m on the beach a year ago to today running several laps of the whole thing. Start with small goals that are easily visible and charge at them. The ease with which you achieve them spurs you on to set further goals, which are themselves easy to achieve because they're only a bit harder than what you already know you can do and on goes the cycle.
