  • In this step by step video tutorial, I show you how to create a sweet little petal cane, with an inset cane to add more detail. This is made using Skinner Blends, and assumes an understanding of conditioning clay, and doing Skinner Blends. If either of these techniques are new to you, then I have posted links below, to my videos on how to condition clay, and Skinner Blends.

    I would love to know a little about how/when you started working with Polymer Clay. Did you start by creating other things first? I started sewing clothing, zippered house dresses for my dear mom, work clothing and suits for me, clothing for my daughter, until she turned 13. Drapes and curtains for each of 7 houses through the years. In 1997 I took my first quilting class and I was hooked❣️ In 2010 my sis in law showed me how to make some woven necklaces, but I really wanted to play with PC, Wire and Metalsmithing. This is where I am today, selling most of my quilting fabrics and books, and making PC jewelry, wire working and learning how to use metals, torches, soldering, etc.

    Fiona what is an ecat cane you speak of at the end of this video?

    • @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
      @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is an Ikat Cane, made to resemble a particular type of fabric design/weave. There are many TH-cam videos on different ways of creating this look, all of which are great fun to try :) If you search under 'Videos of Ikat Cane Techniques' there are lots to chose from, so I couldn't single one out for you. I hope that helps :)

    Very pretty cane. Nicely demonstrated. Thank you. Your pasta machine sounds like it's much better than mine, which is barely limping along after very little use, driving me crazy, and going in the recycling bin as soon as I have a replacement. What manufacturer/model do you have?

    • @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
      @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Pam. I use an Atlas Pasta machine, it was the first brand I bought, and I have stuck with them over the years, so far, touch wood, they have always been good machines. I had to replace the first one as I accidentally put some sharp metal through, hidden in clay and created a big grove in the rollers. And the second I took apart to clean, to see how it would work, never quite went back the same, wont make that mistake again either!! (Other brands you can (and I have) put back together again fine, but the Atlas is made slightly differently I think). Now I am on my third, and still going strong with this one, which is a 150, and I also bought a 180 (the wider machine), which I use if I need a wider sheet of clay. Other brands are of course available, and are equally good, but I stick with what I am happy with. Hope that helps?

    • @pamholloway5962
      @pamholloway5962 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fantastic :) Yes, when I help the British guild demonstrate at the big shows, one of them is on at the same time as a big Cake show, and so many of the cake artists come and watch what we do and get very excited in how they can translate that into sugar paste techniques. Thank you so much for letting me know you have had such success with this one :)

    • @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
      @FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Mary, I use white so often because I normally use FIMO Soft, and that needs white in the middle to soften the colour blends. The other brands blend slightly differently, so it's not needed as much, but still gives a nice look. I don't always use white ;)

It is something I am hoping to improve as I make new videos, but I think I may need to invest in some new equipment, so that may need to wait till I can afford some ;) In the meantime, don't forget that you can add the captions to all of my videos by clicking on the cc button at the bottom right of the screen. Although the text is not always accurate, it is good enough to be able to follow any bits where my voice goes too soft :)
