Thank you for sharing. I watch every video of yours, they are fabulously put together and very education ! The best high quality vedios I gave come across.
I don't usually read too much about Killies in general, but three eyes!? I'm off to find more information on this evolutionary marvel. As usual, your cinematography is outstanding. The amount of work and patience that goes into making these short films must be staggering. Amazing.
Thank you The Dave! This video was captivating from beginning to end, and the BEST introduction to what has become my new aquatic addition. Thank you for laying things out so vividly and explaining such wonderful things about the Golden Wonder Killifish! I'm delighted and fascinated by your video! thank you!
You are so welcome. They're one of the more commonly available Killifish that you see in the "Big Box" stores. They're hardier than the rocket killifish and shine like gold. Just always be sure to keep a cover on any tank containing killifish, they love to jump.
Never knew the killifish would eat a small enough guppy until the 2 I had went missing, they were very well fed but didn't matter. Thankfully the killi does live well with anything slightly larger. I have a single dwarf gourami and they don't fight and feed together without issues.
Dave, this is an amazing video that inspired me to make a better habitat for my golden wonders. Thank you for educating and filmimg these wonderful fishes.
So I have had this 38g column paludarium set up since spring, trying to decide what to put in it. And I think you just convinced me to get a pair of these. You can see (on my channel) it's very blackwater because the entire under-support consists of big manzanita pieces. The Golden Wonder would show beautifully, suit the water conditions and be entertaining as well. Very cool. And beautiful video- as always.

Really cool! I have a male Golden Wonder Killifish in my 37 gallon. They are such a cool fish, with cute personalities. He likes to jump up and bite my finger with food on it.
Great clearest quality recording that I'd enjoy and what a cute little aggressive fish there though ..thanks alot for this informative channel..thumb up.
@@TheDave333 is that killifish actually easly to find?ermm. I mean originated from your hometown and could be found at any local fresh waters? By the way I'm from Malaysia.
These are one of the few Killifish that I see in the shops. They are originally from India and Sri Lanka. The wild fish don't look like these ones. This is a special aquarium bred strain.
I only feed crickets occasionally, and I buy them at a local petstore. Smaller crickets are better to use. However, their main diet is fish pellets designed for meat eating cichlids.
If you slow the video playback speed down to 0.25 at 5:58 you will see the first Killifish catch the cricket, but the second cricket stole and ate the cricket. The guy who got rob ran after the thieve but he didn't give the cricket backkk lol

Thanks for the answer.😊 How about...🐟🐟🐟🐠🐠 If I keep 3males & 2females, Will they get along together? (The Store owner said that they souldn't be kept together because they will Fight each other.)
I'm hoping to raise some fry soon from my pair, i had an old pair pass away about a year ago very easy to breed and I'd say one of the best fish to keep..
Hi Dave! Great Video! I am about to get myself a beautiful Golden Killifish, but can you tell me how high they can actually jump? As far as I can see they can easily jump their own length, which is like 4~5 inches.
Hello there! They're such awesome fish, and your estimate of about 4-5 inches seems about right, but I wouldn't put it past them to be able to jump even higher if they really wanted to.
does clown killifish have the same mechanism for food detection ? I have been keeping 7 of them in my nano aquarium, they are so interesting. Specifically do they have that overhead shadow detection thing ? because my clown killifish i always felt gets scared when my hand casts a shadow or is directly above them.
I'm not certain if they have a parietal eye like the golden wonders, but I'd be willing to bet that they do. I'd also bet that they have the neuromasts on the top of their head to help them detect vibrations on the surface of the water. They're both top water predators, so it would make sense for them to have both of these tools to help them hunt. I look forward to filming them someday.
I took a very close look with a magnifying glass on my clown killies, at the top of the mature ones there is definitely a distinctive spot like the one you mentioned in the video. I only keep clown killies in my tanks and God I love them, have very interesting behaviors, except jumping tanks lol. Again, thank you so much for documenting this. Really amazing work. I hope you make more of these :)
That's a tough one . . . It really depends on the design of your tank. Each aquarium setup is different, so here are some general things to think about. First off, all small fish (anything that can fit in their mouths) will become food. So, no small fish. Next consideration, avoid aggressive species such as larger cichlids. German blue rams might work, because they're fairly passive, but they need water in the mid-80s. Other than that, these killiifish are very docile and non-aggressive. I would avoid top water species, who would compete with the killifish for food and space at the surface. Corydoras catfish would work, but I see your dilemma. So, many aquarium fish are too small to be housed with these guys. So, you'd need a larger peaceful fish. I'm thinking gouramis might work even though they're top water fish. Then, put a bunch of Kuhli loaches to fill in the bottom levels. The Killis and the Kuhlis will get along just fine. The more I think about the gourami combo, the more I like it. . . Thoughts?
@@TheDave333 I think those are both really solid suggestions. Gouramis are passive and deep bodied so they shouldn't be seen as food but won't bother each other, the kuhli loaches are definitely up my alley. Weirdly evolved fish that's bottom dwelling and nocturnal to go with a diurnal extreme surface predator! Plus a gwk wouldn't have a clue what to do with a kuhli noodle I think hahahaha Also here, this may interest you I made Aquarium or zoo style exhibit plaques for the tank I'm building and had them printed at FedEx, the information you gave was the biggest motivator and inspiration thank you! www.canva.com/design/DADnuNhbUAk/Hwu8DhNbyHNdt93vnVdqlw/view?DADnuNhbUAk&
Wow, I saw these guys mixed up in a guppy tank at the store and was amazed how golden colorful they are... so I pick up a couple... After watching this video I learned a lot about these fish, amazing. But this may be bad news for my guppy. :) Oh man, the third eye, really? BTW, the video could have use some slow mo on the jump.
If you have any wonderful tank ideas for them, I've been struggling, they've never been happier than summer tubbing with a low level for me, and redoing all the tanks, ugh- I have two left after a couple jumpers (and the tanks were covered, and the gap had a cover; they're sneaky!)
They will find the tiniest of gaps. They like floating plants to hide under Frogbit, or Asian water fern. ( see my latest videos ). The more plant cover you have at the top the more babies will survive.
The tank used was a 29 gallon tall tank. I removed several inches of water to film the killifish jumping for crickets. The tank has since been re-purposed, and is now being used to film Angelfish breeding. . . However, my designs are very simple- sponge filters, driftwood, and hardy plants such as Anubias, Java Fern, guppy grass, and subwassertang. . . .
Is their third eye built from same tissue like pineal gland? Functions of those two organs are the same . But pineal gland is hidden in skull - stronger sensitive ability?
Awesome video! I want a pair of killifish soon and this helped. By the way they have a dorsal fin not an adipose fin. Adipose refers to the fatty tissue that it’s composed of and lacks rays.
@ Tyler Janasz Thanks for checking out the video, and for the correction on the adipose fin. Oops . . .:-) Have you seen my other video on this species? th-cam.com/video/jVCxvPT19Bo/w-d-xo.html
I have a tank with only one of these fish living in it. I never have to buy fish food. I live in the mountains with tons of small bugs everywhere and he snatches up everything I drop in there almost instantly
He hangs out kinda still near the top of water. But when I come by to feed him a fly or beetle he sees me and noticeably gets excited, starts “wagging his tail” I drop a bug in and he immediately goes motionless for like 2 seconds then attacks it 😊
It sounds like he has you trained! Mine love bugs too. I have a second video on this species If you're interested. . . th-cam.com/video/jVCxvPT19Bo/w-d-xo.html Some people keep nothing but Killifish, because they are quite possibly the most beautiful and interesting freshwater fish in the world. 11 years ago, when I asked any expert cross-breed the Golden Panchax and Blue Panchax, I got biased so badly by hobbyist. And today, I successfully cross-breed the two species but the coloring is disappointing.
Congratulations! They are very closely related, so it makes sense that this would work. Too bad the end results were disappointing. It's not nice to fool mother nature. . . 😁
@@TheDave333 Thanks! I tried for many times and both do not cross-breed until I found a silly method. I was expecting more yellow or golden color but it turned out to be more plain color. Look like I need to research into the colorization of the hybrid, perhaps someone can point me to the right direction here. The Thai already created the Golden Betas, so I think everything is possible. Thanks!
Creating your own strain of fish takes many years of hard work, and sometimes the end results don't meet expectations. Those genes that control the fish's color can only be pushed so far. . . Certain species like guppies and bettas are more suitable to focusing on different color strains. That's doesn't mean it's not possible with killifish, it's just a lot more difficult. I would research 'punnett squares" this knowledge might help you with your project.
I've previously sung (metaphorically, not literally) the praises for videos from The Dave (Dwarf Puffers and Kuhli Loaches) and am going to do so once again with regards to this video. Instead of harping on or waxing lyrical however, I'm just going to refer to The Dave's profile, specifically the About section and say "job done".
golden wonder killifish - can sense basically any movement in the water - 18 motion sensors on it's head - a third eye - very attractive - can jump REALLY high thats some real nice superpowers right there.
I in fact just got 3 of them today!!! The biggest males name is Erwin, he's actually quite passive, the smaller male's name is Levi, super aggressive, but got along with Erwin later on, and the last one is a female. Her name is Hanji :)
Killifish are best kept in single species tanks, and I would definitely avoid keeping these two species together. They are very similar in preferences, and may even be able to cross-breed. They both prefer too be at the top of the tank and will compete with each other too much. For the video, I used the smallest crickets that I could find, the stores usually call them pinhead crickets.
This video is actually awesome I use to have a golden wonder killifish named gar because he kinda resembled a gar fish. Around late spring early summer time he died I had him for almost 4 years. I loved gar he was one of my favorite fish he had a lot of personality and I use to feed him earwigs, crickets, spiders, and mealworms it was always fun to watch him eat, I never realized how much love I had for him until he died. Most of the time whenever I have a fish die it sucks but I never really got upset about but with gar it was different. Yesterday I decided to get another one l, a little baby boy and nicked named him lil G as in little Gar.
What a great story! Thanks for sharing. They really are wonderful fish. I have another video about them that you may want to check out. :-) th-cam.com/video/jVCxvPT19Bo/w-d-xo.html
Hey, you're welcome !!! There's lots of different ones, but these are the easiest ones to keep. Just be sure to cover the tank, or they will all jump out ! They are awesome fish !!!
I'm going to get a paludarium that has a twenty gallon water area soon. The water area is quite a bit shallower than a standard twenty gallon tank, perfect for surface dwelling fish. In a paludarium you could really observe their jumping behavior!
Hey I have a pair in my community tank that has been spawning a lot. Is there a way for me to collect their eggs without removing the parents and putting them in a separate tank?
I used to keep one of these guys in a community tank years ago as an amateur hobbyist. And now I know how he was getting all my neon tetras at night and how he got so huge. good grief.

Hi from the U.K, I've had these before & intend to get them again, I didn't know any of this, they act like Archer fish but without the spitting.
Very interesting, thanks.
Hello from the U.S.! Killifish are some of my favorite fish!
I have a second video on this species if you are interested.
It has a lot of great information about keeping and breeding.
th-cam.com/video/jVCxvPT19Bo/w-d-xo.html
Also, Archer fish are definitely on my to do list. Cheers! :-)
I thought the golden dorado was a salmon, but it's really a giant tetra.
That sounds right. . .
Thank u so much for making tis video...very enlightening! ❤️❤️
You're welcome, and thank you for watching it. Killifish are fascinating. . .
Really cool! I have a male Golden Wonder Killifish in my 37 gallon. They are such a cool fish, with cute personalities. He likes to jump up and bite my finger with food on it.
That's great! Killifish are amazing. 🐠 🐠 🐠
Four-eyed fish are so cool! 😁
I think so too!
This is NatGeo level video detailed explaination with video footage. Amazing!! Not to complain but voice commentary would have made it awesome.
No worries. . . Thank you very much for watching my video and leaving a comment.
Watching on mute I didn't realize it was silent, and bless those who give us a break from a constant audio barrage.
Wow, this is really interesting and very informational. I subbed.
Thank you for watching the video and subscribing to The Dave. I appreciate your support.

Thank you for watching the video and thank you for your subscription.

Very cool video, subscribed
Awesome, Thanks for subscribing.
Do you regularly feed crickets? Where do we get them? What other diet you your killies on?
I only feed crickets occasionally, and I buy them at a local petstore. Smaller crickets are better to use. However, their main diet is fish pellets designed for meat eating cichlids.
If you slow the video playback speed down to 0.25 at 5:58 you will see the first Killifish catch the cricket, but the second cricket stole and ate the cricket. The guy who got rob ran after the thieve but he didn't give the cricket backkk lol
Very observant ! I noticed that too ! They're very quick. . .
Great video The Dave, Thanks
You're very welcome. I'm glad that you enjoyed it. Also, please be e sure to watch my other film on this species. th-cam.com/video/jVCxvPT19Bo/w-d-xo.html
How long did it take for your killis to color up like that?
The adults took about 1 week to color up after I brought them home, the babies took about 2-3 months to really get their colors.
It’s like a small arowana ı love that
Me too
Do they eat the Pellet Food ?
(Like the pellet for Betta or any kind of fish.)
Yes, especially if it makes a splash on the surface. Floating pellets are best.
Thanks for the answer.😊
How about...🐟🐟🐟🐠🐠
If I keep 3males & 2females,
Will they get along together?
(The Store owner said that they souldn't be kept together because they will Fight each other.)
3 males and 2 females will be fine together - I've done it myself. In my experience, they rarely ever fight.
You're an awesome guy!
Thanks! You're pretty awesome too! 🐠🦈🐟
Thanks so much for this video I have 3 Golden Wonders too and now I understand why they do what they do
You are welcome. They're great little fish !
I have a second video on this species if you are interested. th-cam.com/video/jVCxvPT19Bo/w-d-xo.html
Oh, my gosh! Some day I'm going to have this type of fish!
I found mine in Petco. They're one of the most common killifish seen in stores. Awesome little fish, just be sure to keep the tank covered!
thanks for the video! pretty amazing. what (other than crickets) live food can i feed the Golden Wonder?
They'll eat just about anything that moves, as long as it fits in their mouth! They specialize in eating other fish as well as mosquito larvae.
I'm hoping to raise some fry soon from my pair, i had an old pair pass away about a year ago very easy to breed and I'd say one of the best fish to keep..
Go for it! They're so beautiful. Killifish are my favorite fish.
Awesome video!!
Thank you !
So Real, I watched it all in slow Mo, Really amazing, Unfortunately I had one of my neon eaten by two of these before i return these back to PETCO
Sorry for your loss . . . Yeah these guys love neons. . . :-(
Gorgeous fish and very informative video, thanks 👍
You're welcome. :-D
Thank you I will. Killifish are my favorite fish!
Hey dave are you aware of any particular tankmates that work well? There is a remarkable lack of clear information on this
That's a tough one . .
Plus a gwk wouldn't have a clue what to do with a kuhli noodle I think hahahaha
Also here, this may interest you I made Aquarium or zoo style exhibit plaques for the tank I'm building and had them printed at FedEx, the information you gave was the biggest motivator and inspiration thank you!
www.canva.com/design/DADnuNhbUAk/Hwu8DhNbyHNdt93vnVdqlw/view?DADnuNhbUAk&
I checked out the link to the plaque. Loved it, nice work, and a great idea.
Yes, they will eat the guppies. Not using slowmo was a mistake I regret . . . so true. I'll have to do that at some point.
Will you do one for Aphyosemion australe killifish? I'm super interested now :-)
Yes, I will soon . . They are great fish.
How many Golden Wonder Killifish do you have in that tank? Awesome video!
4-6 - I can't remember! Great fish!!!
Is there any way that you can email me a picture of your tank design because I would love to recreate something similar to yours!
Also how many gallons is your tank?
The tank used was a 29 gallon tall tank. I removed several inches of water to film the killifish jumping for crickets. The tank has since been re-purposed, and is now being used to film Angelfish breeding. . . However, my designs are very simple- sponge filters, driftwood, and hardy plants such as Anubias, Java Fern, guppy grass, and subwassertang. . . .
Is their third eye built from same tissue like pineal gland? Functions of those two organs are the same . But pineal gland is hidden in skull - stronger sensitive ability?
I'm sure there's a connection there somewhere.

Beautifull little preditors.

@ITR SOLERACER Maybe a little . . . You'll be more startled, than hurt. :-D
@@TheDave333 oh thx🙂
@@TheDave333 every time I feed it he jumps at me lol
I have a tank with only one of these fish living in it. I never have to buy fish food. I live in the mountains with tons of small bugs everywhere and he snatches up everything I drop in there almost instantly
He hangs out kinda still near the top of water. But when I come by to feed him a fly or beetle he sees me and noticeably gets excited, starts “wagging his tail” I drop a bug in and he immediately goes motionless for like 2 seconds then attacks it 😊
It sounds like he has you trained! Mine love bugs too. I have a second video on this species If you're interested. . . th-cam.com/video/jVCxvPT19Bo/w-d-xo.html
Some people keep nothing but Killifish, because they are quite possibly the most beautiful and interesting freshwater fish in the world. Have you seen the Gardneri killifish? :-)
th-cam.com/video/btAtnUnv0KI/w-d-xo.html
Do these require live food or can they be trained eventually to eat floating pellets?
They will eat floating pellets or flake food with no problems.
@@TheDave333great thanks for confirming. I used to have African butterfly fish before and I had to train them to get used to pellets
Yeah, they can be a little picky. I can't wait to make a video about them!!! It's on my "to do" list. . . . :-D
@@TheDave333 I'll be looking forward to that. Not sure if you've done elephant nose fish yet but they are my next favourite after the butterflyfish
I have plans for the Elephant nose as well, but I won't get to them for a couple years. So many fish, so little time.
They are so perfect for a paludarium,a great alternative to gars and archerfish.
And they stay much smaller too!
Man I really want these 😂😍
You won't be sorry, they're awesome little fish. :-)
Thank you for the subtle praise. I appreciate it. :-D
golden wonder killifish
- can sense basically any movement in the water
- 18 motion sensors on it's head
- a third eye
- very attractive
- can jump REALLY high
thats some real nice superpowers right there.
It really is ! Amazing top water predators. . . Highly recommended ! :-)
But cant see the cricket in front of their eyes :D
@Caranthirn Yes. I guess we all have our blind spots . . . :-)
I in fact just got 3 of them today!!! The biggest males name is Erwin, he's actually quite passive, the smaller male's name is Levi, super aggressive, but got along with Erwin later on, and the last one is a female. Her name is Hanji :)
@Betta Flaks - - - NIce! Love those names. :-)
hi can you keep golden wonder killi fish with red chin killi fish and the crickets what size do you feed them on
Killifish are best kept in single species tanks, and I would definitely avoid keeping these two species together. They are very similar in preferences, and may even be able to cross-breed. They both prefer too be at the top of the tank and will compete with each other too much. For the video, I used the smallest crickets that I could find, the stores usually call them pinhead crickets.
I like to see when he jump and catch crickets in slow motion
I regret not doing that. . . Next time. :-D
Wonderful video. We have a similar species in Singapore.. the blue panchax.
Another beautiful killifish! Thanks for watching the video.

Hi I'm interested to know where u got this info from
Many years of experience . . .
I'm going to get a paludarium that has a twenty gallon water area soon. The water area is quite a bit shallower than a standard twenty gallon tank, perfect for surface dwelling fish. In a paludarium you could really observe their jumping behavior!
Yes, you could, but be careful they don't jump out! :-)
@@TheDave333 Lucky It has a large area above the water and a lid! My dad agreed they would be super cool for the tank :).
They're very cool fish, but remember they get fairly large, so be sure they have plenty of swimming room.
@@TheDave333 The tank is about 36" long, so I don't think that would be a problem.
Nice. Don't forget to post a video! :-)
Hey I have a pair in my community tank that has been spawning a lot. Is there a way for me to collect their eggs without removing the parents and putting them in a separate tank?
