    Do you think that 4K is a must have feature? Especially for online platforms like TH-cam?

    • @M_773
      @M_773 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Enthusiasm Project I would say yes. 4k video is so easy to get nowadays it is hard to see why people use 1080p. 4k has been on phones for years, and it is making its way to lower end 4k cameras as well

    • @Nerdzombiedisco
      @Nerdzombiedisco 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No. Top vloggers are ditching 4K. Or even shooting in 4K and converting down. Upload times and over heating issues still not resolved. 4k issues will eventually be overcome. We all know that. But the reality is...it isn’t a must have feature. Not a deal breaker. This is the most underrated Camera of the year.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ve been doing 1080p since this video, and haven’t seen a drop in quality. It also speeds up my workflow and saves a ton of disk space.

      Man I’m right there with you and just bought this with the 24-105 kit lens. No interest in 4k because I’m not shooting video. End of story. The hype about the full frame die off against mirrorless is just absurd IMO.

    Always happy to see POSITIVE reviews on this camera instead of the usual reviewers whining about the lack of 4k ad nauseum (besides, I use cameras mainly for photos and only shoot video 2% of the time at the most). Had been thinking about adding this to my arsenal and this was very helpful!

    I totally agree with you, the 6D Mark II is a great camera. I own 2 Canon XC-10 that can record 4K, great autofocus but the files are huge, and the CFast Cards are expensive...

  • @AlexandreLollini

    The same is true for photo, when an old computer already lags with 20mp, it will probably take 26mp, but will struggle above 30mp RAW. We do great work because we have a fluid workflow, 4K or high megapixel RAW images are disrupting for the workflow. To get good shots, take more shots, to get good footage, take more footage. The resolution is really secondary, because a sharp 6MP image is always better than a 100mp blurry one. And no matter if you have 100mp if the hair or makeup is off, or if the pose is off, it's off. There are also software to get more from a picture too, if you want to push it. But the requirement is always to actually have the good shot. To catch THAT moment.

    I agree. I was planning to buy a 5d mk4 but I got a 6d mk2 and I fell in love immediately. Thanks to the rotating screen, I took so many photos that I probably wouldn't have taken a 5d mk4. I love it as much as my ds2 for its beautiful image and small files. 4k? Hmm, many times I had a phone attached to the lamp's shoe, which was a recorder of what I photographed. I like filming with the phone and I like 6d, it would be nice if it had 4k but the bitrate it would record probably both the camera and my computer cooked.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The flippy screen is so versatile for much more than vlogging. It really does come in handy for photograhpy!

    • @mrpink330
      @mrpink330 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tombuck I just finished making reproductions of the drawings for the book. Most often, I take photos on a flipping screen, even with a 300mm tele flipping screen, is accurate and fast. Even with a Canon 5d mk10 without such a screen, I would not take many photos. I would like 4k in it but with bitrate settings. Because I believe that the factory settings are not always optimal. I know it from the phone calls. The default software produces large files with poor image quality and the alternative apps have better compression, give smaller files with a better image quality. Most often I shoot from the hip by touching the screen. Also moving objects. 6d mk2 is just great. Of course 6d is not weather sealed but we can use alternative solution. Great movie. 👍

    Hi Tom, I another Podcast with Kevin you showed your Canon 6D MII als Vlog CAM with live picture... I have a 6D MII as well connected to an atem mini and want to use it for live streaming. How did you manage to get a clean HDMI feed from the cam? As far as I know, it is not possible....but in the Video you has a clean live picture without focus grid... - you have an awesome channel, I learned so much from you already.... love it..!

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Thomas (great name)! You're correct that the 6D II doesn't have clean HDMI out. But if you turn off all of the display info and switch it into manual focus, you'll get a clean signal (the only downside being no autofocus). IT works great for stationary setups though. My wife has been using the 6D this way for I think almost two years now and it's perfect.

      Awesome! That’s exactly how I feel using this camera since December. It’s the most versatile piece of gear I’ve ever owned. I’m currently borrowing a Sony A7III for a review, and while it really is quite a beast, I would never give up my Canon for it. 👍

    • @Nerdzombiedisco
      @Nerdzombiedisco 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Enthusiasm Project yeah, I was close to going with the A7iii since I got enough credit from trading in my Leica...I had the A7ii and used it for a wedding. It performed admirably but Adobe Lightroom didn’t like the Sony files...so I’m back FULL CIRCLE to Canon. I did like the small rangefinder feel of the Leica. So I’m picking up a Canon M6 when I get a few more green in the bank. Glad I stumbled upon your channel while desperately looking for POSITIVE REVIEWS on the 6D mii. I thought I was losing my mind..this is a great camera for what it offers for the price!

    I have the 6DMKII and BMPCC6K, and prefer the 6DMKII. The video dynamic range is not as good, but if you know how to set exposure, there isn't a big difference, especially with a variable ND. • @tombuck

      I haven’t had any overheating issues at all, and it can record continuously for 30 minutes (although it does split footage into 4gb files). A non-mirrorless 1080p camera shouldn’t have the heating issues of a mirrorless 4k beast.

      The 6D II doesn’t have clean hdmi, but there are two workarounds:
      1. Keep the camera in manual focus (works if you’re not moving much)
      2. Use the Canon EOS Webcam Utility app with the camera connected via USB (gives a clean signal with autofocus!)

    Really awesome and honest review. Seems everyone I’ve watched on this subject all “need” 4k but don’t have a real reason why. Nice to see someone with an actual realistic point of view. Of course 4k is nice but if someone lacks the fundamentals of videography then it doesn’t matter what resolution it’s in. I’d rather watch an interesting video in 720p over a boring video in 8k. also packing 4k in one of the smaller full frame canon bodies would have probably caused overheating like the mirrorless options out right now.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Wes! I agree 100%
      Even after having the 6D II for a year, my thoughts are still exactly the same. It’s a tremendous camera, and like all Canon’s, VERY reliable. The biggest practical benefit I can currently see to is the ability to crop in when scaling down to 1080, but that’s not something I do very often, so it’s not a priority for me personally.

    • @WesleyDropDead
      @WesleyDropDead 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Enthusiasm Project I could see that being a thing! I watch TH-cam mainly from mobile and even my MacBook is pre-retina so it honestly doesn’t make a big difference for me at all lol.
      Also I feel like I’ve watched 98% of the videos on TH-cam of this camera. Come January or February I will for sure be picking one up. It’s much nicer seeing videos like this of someone talking from experience rather than someone calling it a bad camera because they’re reading specs off of a website. I know I’ll be perfectly happy with what I’ll be getting! I’m glad you’re still enjoying it. Looking forward to doing the same.

    4K is only interesting to get better 1080p. If you have good 1080p footage, that's enough. I agree that Canon has the right colours and the flip screen is also a huge thing, not only for photo and video, but also for astrophotography.

  • @Lessthanthreeedm

    I'm using Canon 6d mark II + Sigma 35 mm combination, but struggle to get good quality video footage. The picture quality is very good, but when shooting video and exporting at maximum possible quality settings, the footage looks almost like it was taken with a phone.. Also, it's very hard to colour grade the footage, as it becomes quite muddy and unpleasant to the eye and the default colours don't look great either. I've watched a bunch of tutorials on color grading and majority of them are using Sony's slog3 algorithm for shooting. Am I expecting too much from my camera or I'm just doing it wrong?

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, this is interesting. With that lens especially you should be getting some great results. I've had good luck with the default picture profile and the sharpening turned down a little bit.
      The footage is 8 bit color with a fairly small bitrate, so it's not the most versatile to edit with, but a good lens and decent lighting SHOULD be able to get you most of the way there.

    The lack of 4k is not a real problem.

    • @tombuck

      I’ve been happy with the results so far. Of course the lens makes a HUGE difference in final quality.

    • @p_adam19
      @p_adam19 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wish it was. Of course the lens does contribute to the look of the image and the colours, AF are great as always, but overall it is just too damn soft (almost the same as the 5D Mark III from 2012) but at least it is not always unflattering.
      But it is just annoying, considering the higher-priced 5D IV is still sticking to a fixed touchscreen (making the 6D II more attractive).
      The EOS M50 already has somewhat improved 1080p quality with a newer processor.
      So there is some hope, that if Canon comes out with a cheaper cousin to the EOS R, it will squeeze out better quality from a similar 26MP sensor.
      They have the basics right, they are just slow to getting there.

And coming from 9 point autofocus on 60D with only Center cross point, I think everything more is bonus. I’m still not convinced about EOS R and using an adapter to use my existing lens (battery life is a an issue.) 2 batteries of 60D has lasted me 15 days of vacation with around 4000 shots.

Maybe share some lenses, but even then, for video and photo you do not need the same lenses, where in video you do not want focus breathing, while for photo colours and chromatic aberrations and bokeh texture and quality are important. Video is better with anamorphic, blue flares etc. While I need different things in photo. The brain for photo is different from the brain for video. To do good dolly video you need complex rigs, while photo is as simple as admiring the beauty of a moment and just taking it as a picture to make a memory stronger.
