    Coming from a T5i user of two years, the 6D M2 certainly has much better dynamic range! In my opinion verything about the 6D M2 is better compared to the T5i. That's why I chose it as my full frame upgrade camera. Almost forgot to add that I enjoyed watching your video! Nicely done!

  • @ignacioconde2219
    @ignacioconde2219 7 ปีที่แล้ว +56

    Listen. People saying this camera is worse than the 6d are either non 6d shooters or arent shooting enough their 6d.
    This has a lot more cross section AF points. That's a huge upgrade and enough to make me upgrade to it.
    I cant afford anything better.

      @LeeZavitz  7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      The auto focus system is a nice upgrade from the original 6D. Plus a few other bells and whistles. I'm sure Canon will still sell a lot of these. Most people are just salty about no 4k and not a big improvement on the sensor side.

      Zed ProMedia pff. Get a RED camera for video or whatever. 6d is pretty good.

      btw. if you need wider focuspoint coverage with this camera, use the DualPixel AF(Liveview). it covers almost the whole screen.

      dont buy it go for 5d mark 4. after a month you will know that it is not good as people saying about it. shoot it yourself and compare video quality with sony nx100 for video or D7200 or other nikon dslr above it. i used it and it didnt give me that depth i want video was not sharp really bad

    Thank you for a down-to-earth look at the camera. Other reviewers seem to have all jumped onto the bandwagon of shitting on this camera, and it's frustrating when you're simply trying to find an unbiased review. Yes, this camera has problems, and so does every other camera out there. But I'm not buying a camera so that I can have the most megapixels or the most stops of dynamic range, I'm buying a camera to take pictures. People get so lost in spec sheets that they forget why they got into photography in the first place: to capture moments. I'd argue the camera you use is far less than 5% of the final image you walk away with, and the only thing people should worry about when buying a camera is "does this tool let me capture the moments that I want to capture?" As a portrait shooter, I upgraded to the 6D2 from the original 6D and have zero complaints. The quality of life upgrades from the flip out touchscreen, dual pixel AF, autofocusing system, and others more than justify the upgrade for me.

      Alex Kline Couldn't have said it better myself. In addition to portraits, it should be a nice tool for bird shots (see comment on this page). I'll be using it for astronomy (read long integrations). Other reviewers have often their own agendas, allegiance to other brands, etc. Sometimes they even take pictures.

    Thanks for this review! A lot of Canon 6D Mark II reviews on TH-cam but not so good as yours! We use a Lumix g7 and a Sony a6500 for our videos. G7 for the talking parts because of the flip-scren but the autofocus is crap so we use manual focus and we are very limited, and a6500 for b-roll because it hasn't flip screen but good IQ and 120fps. We don't use 4K at all. We've tested the GH4, GH5 and some more but all of these cameras have a problem: bad autofocus, small sensors... Watching the IQ at 7:23 it's insane if comparing with our G7 or the GH5. Ok, if you focus on a tree you can see much more detail in the Lumix cameras, but overall, maybe because of the full frame look, we prefer the image that the 6D MarkII produces. We are about to buy it but it's so pricey! hahaha. The stronger points for us is the perfect face detection for video, the flip screen (which every single Sony mirrorless camera lacks except for the tiny a5100) and the full frame look. Would you recommend this camera for "vlogging - not exactly vlogging"? Thank you!

    • @StewComedy
      @StewComedy 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nekojitablog I want to Vlog as well and have the same problems as you. I own PanG7 but autofocus sucks. Own a SonyNextT flip screen but no audio input, overheats, and footage doesnt match G7. What has been your best vlogging camera? ( your videos are great)

    • @Nekojitablog
      @Nekojitablog 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! We only own the Sony a5100 (we started vlogging with this camera), Lumix g7 and sony a6500. None of these cameras fit with our style because of the lack of something (audio input on the a5100, good autofocus on the g7 or flip screen on the a6500) but and the end of the day the most important thing is to tell something to your audience and you can do it with every single camera on the market. The problem is you have to know the limitations of your equipment and adapt your style to this limitation. For example, we know we can't do 'run and gun' vlogging because the footage would be out of focus most of the time, so we just vlog being static, sitting somewhere and focus in manual mode. We hope it helps!

    • @MarkBarners
      @MarkBarners 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Same here. Have the a6300 but the lack of flip out screen sucks. Thinking about the a5100 but then the stabiliser still sucks... The GH5 is way too expensive for a non-fullframe camera. What about the Canon 80D then? I know Casey Neistat uses it but I don't know if the image stabilizer is good enough...? I can't make up my mind. I am even thinking about buying the well known equivalent to the a5100 but the Canon m10... what to do?

    I think that the canon 6d mark 2 might be one of the most misunderstood cameras that Canon has produced. I believe that depending on what you do with it and by the amount of income you get from a camera is way more important than modern features like 4k if you don´t have clients that ask and pay for it. I mean, some features just don't pay off for the majority of photographers that is out there and the perfect camera for everybody just doesn't exist. I would like a camera with image quality and look of a Hasselblad, features and ergonomics as a 1DX mark II and 5D SR , cheap so I can have two of them but expensive enough so not everyone can afford them. But at the same time not so complex and hard to use and last but not least, not too big and bulky so I leaving it at home since my phone are with me anyways.
    I have used a 5d mark 2 since 2012 shooting everything from sports, school portraits, weddings, family pictures and real estate as well hang it around my neck capturing candid moments of my own family. It was a really good all-around, workhorse of a camera that have paid for itself time over time again. Even if it was at the time of my purchase already an old camera next to the new Mark III that came out a few months later it have produced many good pictures. Waited a long time for the mark IV and during the time I picked up a lot of L-glass. When the 5d IV came out my jaw dropped, it was breathtakingly expensive for what I wanted it to do, for the material I produced and how much income I got from my photography from a yearly perspective.
    Since I mostly shoot real-estate now (with some exceptions like weddings during the summer months) its really comes in handy with a flip out screen for the kind of work that I do every day. Camera mostly steady on a tripod and 99% of the time in live-view, which is a joy to use on this camera, makes it really easy to expose and compose correctly on location. The really nice ergonomics, weather sealing, vari-angle touchscreen, easy to work with wi-fi, the range of canon L-glass, familiar and easy to navigate menu system and nice-size files to work with makes the Canon 6d mark II a great tool to use day after day after day.
    Its not so big, bulky and heavy which is also a plus if you travel alot.
    The AF spread in the viewfinder is indeed terrible and only one card SD slot narrows the usability alot for this camera. For the professional sport or photojournalist, wedding or landscape-photographer this is not the camera for you, but damn if its not the best real-estate camera out there.

  • @MrElderlykiwi
    @MrElderlykiwi 7 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    jeez so many people shit on this camera so much, like of course it's not as amazing as the 5D Mark IV, or a 4K camera for video shooting, but I don't feel like it was meant to be. it was supposed to be a (relatively) cheap full frame canon most likely for those looking to upgrade from an APS-C sensor camera without spending $3500+ and in that sense it does well. most of the people ranting so hard in the comments are honestly probably just not in the kind of demographic this camera was marketed for

    • @InMission
      @InMission 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sam, when compared to Nikon D750, it's a shame they even put their Logo in that camera. Nikon D750 it's a 3 years old camera, yet it beats badilly the 6D MKII and if that is not enough, it cost way less. Shame on Canon in all aspect, Price and Quality, it really sucks. I really want to like it, I went to see it, but unfortunately my 5 years old D7000 has yet a faster and more reliable autofocus, unacceptable.

      Yea if you go for the G master lenses of course they will be expensive. Get any normal Sony lens and they are priced, although a little more expensive, competitively.That’s it. Sony’s lenses paired with the A7iii produced the sharpest images I’ve ever seen from a 24 mpx ff body. Not everyone will agree but it’s just my opinion.

    Recently spent a week shooting a local series of fashion shows. I had to rent a 5D3 because my 6D shutter broke during one of the shows. I was shooting next to a friend who was using the 6D2 and I have to say it blew the 5D3 away for focus and image quality. I'll be replacing the 6D soon and most likely with the 6D2 as I don't need a ton of dynamic range and I don't shoot video much.

  • @videojeroki
    @videojeroki 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I used to shoot with canon apsc, i switch to m43 olympus em5mkII. Since i learn many things about next camera:
    - no more mirrorless unless better power/battery consumption and start up delay. I miss so many shoots because of that and it's my complain number 1
    - 16Mpix is enough for my need, but more is nice for cropping when i cannot zoom enough
    - 6fps is enough for my need
    - Sensor size doesn't matter if you have good lens
    - Flippy screen is a must!
    - I barely use video and don't even think about it, so 4k is not necessary
    - connectivity is very important
    - Menu system and ergonomy are way more important than what i thought
    - my exposure are mainly good so no need crazy DR
    - Iso max of 6400 is more that enough
    - Silent mode is very nice
    - Touch and shoot is a must since i experienced it
    - Mirrorless is smaller yes, but still big (once you use a proper lens) enough to limit my usage.
    - I don't shoot pro, so 1 sd card slot is enough
    - Shooting raw ok, but photo editing everything is a pain... So the jpeg rendering must be good (i would miss the olympus for that matter)
    - EVF is great but OVF is also fine,
    - I had to buy a grip to improve the handling, so i need something i can punch someone with!
    I think the canon 6dmkII would answer all my needs

    I currently have 2 6Ds and to be honest love them, I've shot for 12 years on a professional level within the automotive industry and weddings. My main lenses are sigma art 20mm and 50mm plus a couple of canons, im looking for a newer camera that has the flip out screen options, i also have a Panasonic with this and it gives me a better angle and offers up more creative photography. This is about the 12th reviews ive seen so far and although everyone talks about functions that it doesn't have, few seem to highlight its main ones to me the slip out screen and touch screen. Lets be honest, i always feel its the glass on the lenses that shout. I think ill certainly look into these more in person as they are a strong camera for a mixtures of style.

    Another + which people don’t seem to realize is the original 6D doesn’t go past 30fps, the Mark II at least does 60fps at 1080p which is a major plus, though it would be nice since it’s 2017 if it had 4K, and also 120fps at at least 720.

    My greatest problem (when shooting stills with the 6D2) is the auto focus array. No problem when shooting video or stills using live view - the dual pixel AF is simply great but, shooting stills using the TTL viewfinder, the grouping of the AF array in the center of the frame drives me crazy. With my 7D2, I can just select a single AF spot or group of AF spots near the top of the frame and I will usually nail the focus on the head and eyes of my subject. The center grouping of the 6D2 makes me either use single shot AF and recompose or AF servo and miss the face of my subject.
    Using live view and face recognition is a way around this but, in really bright conditions, I cannot see the LCD for Live View work. Using a Hoodman Loupe secured to the camera with the Hoodman elastic bands is one work-around but, negates the ability of touch control.
    Do you have any work-arounds?????

    Same thing with the old 6d. Biased all over internet, and in reality was one of the best cameras in low light, with great image quality.

      People are nit picky about how it doesn't perform as well as a camera that's more than double the price currently (the 5d4). This camera fills it's roll which is a general purpose beginner full-frame. It's not for professional video - if that's a deal breaker, buy a 5d series or a sony. I needed a weather sealed full-frame for travel, wildlife, and the occasional portrait shot - and this camera will do everything I want to a professional grade. If I do no obtain pro-level images from this camera, it's because of me - not the camera.

    Granted it's a few years later, but I just picked up a newer used 6DII to upgrade from my battle-worn 7D, and I'm really happy with it. The lack of a joystick bothers me a bit, but in reality I've become so accustomed to using the center focus point in conjunction with back button focus to focus and recompose that I hardly even notice. I shoot a lot with an EOS 3 35mm and it doesn't bother me that it doesn't have a joystick, so why should it bother me on the 6D MkII?

      Mike Wakefield the 5dm3 with 24-105 i is cheaper than the 6dm2 with 24-105 ii. The difference is almost a gopro 5 black, which will give you 4k and you can use it the way jared polin is, mounted on the dslr.

      The 6D MK II is a MUCH better tool to take pictures with. The images are better, and it's screen makes the camera a no brainer when it comes to functionality and fun. This camera has a ton of upgrades, but people waiting for it took all of the great improvements for granted, like the DPAF and the tilt/flip/touch screen, and they feel like they've been let down because it isn't a 5D MK IV for the same price.

    • @AnwarHaikalRuslan
      @AnwarHaikalRuslan 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, people are disappointed because the new $550 Canon SL2 and the old 6D beats this DSLR in dynamic range. Sure DR isn't everything, but for the price and comparing to other models in it's price range, it's just a huge disappointment. No one expects it to be a 5DmkIV.

    • @nunya7027
      @nunya7027 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This camera beats the others with high ISO image quality. I don't ever shoot at low ISO, and this camera is head and tails better than my 6D. It has so many improvements, I am tired of listing them all. It is a great camera, and has all the things I wanted in a full frame DSLR.
      Anyone who claims that this camera is a dud because it doesn't have a low ISO dynamic range that isn't an increase isn't that much of a big deal, but it's the buzz word for all of the cool kidz who want to be hip by thinking they know what they are talking about when they harp on one particular issue that isn't really that big of an issue at all. Most of my pictures are taken at higher ISO's and this camera delivers, big time. There is something about the look of the images that this camera produces that just puts a smile on my face. The colors, the decreased noise floor, and the overall IQ is stunning. Every picture I review after a shoot just comes out a lot better than my 80D and my 6D. The people who even mention dynamic range in a one or two line comment are really just detractors, as they aren't giving any thought to how excellent this camera is.

  • @Ben-rz9cf
    @Ben-rz9cf 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    So are there any better cameras out there in the same price range in terms of dynamic range on a full frame sensor? I've been wanting to upgrade to a full frame but if the dynamic range on the 6D is not so good i may just wait for the release of the 5D MkV to bring down the cost of the MkIV and buy that

    I want an affordable full frame under $2000 for photo and video - But I don't care about 4K. I just need 1080p60. I'd like good DR and good video AF and good low light performance. My choices are the 6D2, the D750, and the a7 II. Which one?

    • @LeeZavitz
      @LeeZavitz  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      moo if you want good video AF the 6d2 is the best followed by the a7ii. The D750 is not usable. The D750 is probably slightly better than the a7ii when it comes to dynamic range but they are both better than the 6D2. As you can see there is no one perfect camera. But as the person said above. The XT2 is a good choice as well even though it’s not fullframe. Has decent autofocus in video, great dynamic range, fun to use, great lenses etc. I put a links in the description if you wanna check it out. I’ve also made a few reviews on the xt2

      Omar Nour I switched from canon to Sony a7rii a couple years ago. I had a lot of problems with the camera as well as how expensive the Sony lenses are. I personally switched to Fuji and have been loving the system for over a year. I see no need for 42mp. But the people that are shooting with an a7rii seem to like it so it’s personal preference really.

    Hi Lee,
    Thanks for the all the great videos and great images. I'm less than
    thrilled with canon's IQ for the last few years but really like the
    ergonomics which helps in difficult shooting situations . Questions
    - i prefer the 6D over the 5d3 (having had both) as I regularly
    shoot 3200-12800 ISO RAW images (not JPG). BUT the focusing on 6d
    is not that good even though I mainly use center point. I also use
    live view a lot for stills. Anyways I was eagerly waiting for the
    6d2 but from reviews am a little concerned. Knowing that lowlight
    ISO performance with improved focussing is my main concern, would
    you suggest the 5d4 or 6D2? Any improvement over 6D at high
    ISOs?

    • @LeeZavitz
      @LeeZavitz  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No improvement when it comes to high ISO. But there is a decent improvement in the auto focus. And shooting in live view the DualPixel AF is awesome. Other than that its basically the same camera with more Mega pixels.

    • @Scott-yn3qq
      @Scott-yn3qq 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Lee! I might look into the 5d4. Do you see any improvement in 5d4 vs 6d2 in high iso?

    • @rolandsv8
      @rolandsv8 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Watch Dustin Abbott's dynamic range review. He compares it against 5d4, and 5d4 is considerably better. For me personally looks like lack of flippy screen on 5D4 will be dealbreaker in favour of 6d2- way more versatility is more important to me than satisfaction over pixel peeping in extreme cases

    • @Scott-yn3qq
      @Scott-yn3qq 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      rolandsv8
      Thanks for the tip. I'll take a look. For me I would also love the flip screen but the iso is extremely important as I almost always shoot 3200-12800 and want to be able to push as much as possible. I have been able to use the 6d1 up to 12800 but that is kinda the limit. If the 6d2 is worse on this upper end then that sucks :(

    • @Scott-yn3qq
      @Scott-yn3qq 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is the 6d2 worse than the 6d1 at high ISO? Am reading some conflicting reviews...

  • @tommoh0087
    @tommoh0087 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have been wondering this a lot. Usually reviews are not even mentioning this. For me color inaccuracies are the biggest downside when pumping up the ISO. Usually I don't really mind the grain and it can be even reduced pretty well when post processing but color is pain in ass to fix. Other thing that most reviews complete miss is that in post process some grain is easier to remove than other. For example in the past Olympus created more grain but for some reason for example Lightroom made far better job removing Olympus grain that from some other brands. This is not related to your review in any way but I really think that most of the reviews just cut corners too much.

    • @nunya7027
      @nunya7027 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 6D Mk II has a very easily managed noise in post. It cleans up really nicely. You're right about the color reproduction. I would say that Canon has the best color rendition of the lot.

    Hi Zed! Thanks for the video. Just wanted to ask you if 5D Mark iii would be a better choice over the 6D Mark ii for someone who shoots weddings, people, landscape and indoor? • @MikedieONE
      @MikedieONE 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are both not so different in DR. the 5Dm3 has weird check pattern banding when you pull up the shadows. About the focuspoints. that only counts for the viewfinder. when you use liveview with dualpixel AF, the focuspoints almost cover the whole screen.
