Yeah the careers advisors told me ‘less is more’ for my personal statement and I’d didn’t believe them but it’s so true. I couldn’t fit it all in my personal statement. Do things related to your subject and volunteering I would say. Quality over quantity.
thank you sm for these tips! Your work ethic is rlly admirable :). Is it still possible to achieve high grades like this while maintaining a personal and social life if you do it in the right way?
Sure! I think if you'll always have to sacrifice something - if you go out at night then you either have to sacrifice your sleep by waking up early to study, or sacrifice studying by letting yourself sleep (or sacrifice your social life by not going out). Unfortunately there seems to be not enough hours in a day to do everything, but you definitely have enough time to do a bit of everything. No amount of A*s is worth sitting by yourself for 2 years straight
Thank you! Im doing 4 A-levels (further, maths, physics and DT) and want to do engineering. I found gcses very easy and ive only just realised that i actually need to try here😭but im getting there! Organisation is also very hard and im going to invest in a planner
THIS IS SO INCREDIBLY USEFUL, OBSESSED W UR VIDEOS!!! in terms of extracurriculars, do u think it would be more useful focussing on super curricular activities? what are some activities that you did to stand out and did you do them throughout the whole of sixth form? im currently looking at all the different courses im interested in and trying to figure out which one i want to do so I can tailor the things i do in y12/y13 to show im passionate about studing whatever the academic focus of that course may be if that makes sense?? any tips would be so helpful
They only look at super curriculars in the UK and it depends on your subject. It doesn't have to be a difficult project (it can be reading a book or watching a documentary), just something that shows you love the subject. Also make sure you focus on what you LEARNED from the experience rather than what you did and talk about how it affected you. Good luck! :)
@user-gw5md3wk3q hi! If I were you I think the best option would be to get a job at a company that has something to do with your course. Even if you're a receptionist at an accounting firm (for example) you'll have loads to write about in your PS that will be unique, you'll earn some money, and you'll have work experience in the field for when you leave uni. If not, I would spend your time doing either a long and technical MOOC, doing lots of tutoring, or reading a really buff book. In my opinion supercurriculars don't matter unless you're really good at them, in which case 2 years probably isn't enough. The only thing I think they cared about specifically at Cam was my organ playing, but that's prob because of the uni (so my taekwondo, chinese etc all useless)
@@yanr4n when you say supercurriculars don't really matter, what aspect of the application do you think matters the most/ how do you ensure you stand out?
hii! I’m 2 months into yr12 at the moment and am desperately trying to figure out how to get in control of this all 😅 thank you so much for this video! it told me things that no one told me about when i was getting into sixth form also, where did you get your planner from?😊😊
i think maths a-level follows rlly nice from gcse so just checking that you truly understand all of the content so that when you start year 12 you have a super solid foundation is gonna be the best thing you can do. most of my maths reads are pretty niche lol my fav one that i read during sixth form was probably 'the music of the primes' x
Ahhh your saving me, I’m going to be doing chemistry, bio and psychology so I’m in for a whole lot of anxiety but anyways I’m going to try and be positive and follow your advice (currently stressed ab results day 😭) Edit: also I was thinking ab his medicine most unis look for maths bio and chem, however I’m doing psychology. But the unis I want to go to say they mostly want bio and chem and the third can be any subject so will this make me less likely to get picked for uni to study medicine, because I’m not doing maths A level?
Loved this video as I’m in my year 11 summer ☺ also could you please make a video of how you got into Cambridge so the superciruclurs you did and other thing eg personal statement?
thank you! i'm gonna do that exact thing next year when i am there so i can get the opinions of other people on my course! set an alert for next summer 😏
im starting yr13 in september and i feel so behind already, im struggling to see what to get done first with my ps, coursework, revision and lnat coming up - do you have any specific organization tips? maybe how you organise your planner to suit you or how to know what has to be done first? love your videos btw
hi! there is an organisation vid coming (although probably not very soon hehe), so i'd say i would prioritise your lnat, then coursework for now, then ps then revision around all that. my planner is a monthly overview, then everyday i have a section for my daily to do list. most days looked the same for me during sixth form so i didn't need anything more complex than that - just filling in the revision specifics day to day. priority wise i think getting into uni is the most important thing, thus the lnat being the highest priority. the ps would come next but i think coursework has more urgency as you won't want to be doing that when you're in the midst of revision later on (and i am of the opinion that your ps doesn't really matter anyway). lucky for me everything was over with by september so i just had to do my maths - i suppose you have a lot more coursework to worry about with your subjects :( good luck and keep holding on!!
biggest piece of advice is to make flashcards (or mindmaps or whatever you prefer) as you go along - you're gonna have hella content with the subject combination and physics a-level is a real bugger so if you have flashcards pre made you can probably sustain maths and compsci with them for the majority of your time
Really liked the video thank you!! Just a quick question, which college are you going to be at in Cambridge? And best of luck with uni you’re gonna do amazing!❤

@@crtjoys I can see both sides to the argument! For me, I like to take notes because it makes sure that I'm listening and it gives me something to reference back to because I consume a lot of content everyday. If I am stuck with something I'd go back and replay that bit and just listen first, then when I think I'd got it I'd go back and take notes for completion haha. Some people do find it better to just sit and fully absorb though and if you aren't gonna go back and look at the notes I can see why they think making notes is a waste of time

omg sorry i prob missed ur whole summer lol! no need to wake up at 4am i just have no better things to do - a couple hours a day after school for the whole year should be more than enough for great GCSE grades (and good luck!)
@@yanr4n I meant post-GCSE like Y11-Y12 how much do i need to study GCSE s are going fine also waking up at 4am is not an uncommon practice days before A-Level end of topics/AS/actual A-Levels ik because my sister's friend used to do that and i'm fine with it just confirming that 16 hour study sessions are only when A-Levels end of topics/AS/actual A-Levels are awfully close and not just every weekend
@@AbuHureraArshad OH SORRY I MISUNDERSTOOD! I'd say over the summer between Y11 and Y12 I'd do maybe an hour or two everyday (or do like 2 full days of studying per week then rest on every other day). During sixth form you don't have to study 16hours a day except when cramming you're right lol if you stay consistent I usually say 3-4 hours everyday (excl class time) plus homework on one weekend day and rest another weekend day - whether you want to do that at 4am or after school is up to preference
How tf do you get five A*s lmao I got A* A B last year and I was gassed. The only way I may have got 3 A*s is if I had locked myself away in my room studying 24/7 lmaooo 😂
100% yes! if you're willing to put the time in there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to reach the top grades. you just might have to spend a bit of time consolidating your gcse knowledge up to the 8/9 grade and then you're on a level playing field
Hi Yanran, I would genuinely appreciate some advice on having to take the full AS and A levels in one year. I really don't know how to manage and what to prioritize? Thanks!
I did this with a couple subjects, start NOW if ur sitting them next summer, forget the year 2 content and focus on the year 1/AS content, it’s definitely possible to cover in 2/3 months if u work hard so i would recommend that you cover the AS content over the next 2/3 months and make sure you know it like its your name, then move onto year 2 content. The year 2 content is not ALOT in my opinion but it is complex, so July (has like a week left) up until the beginning/end of october (or mid of September if ur fast) should be all AS then you’ll have november-march (5months) for year 2 content which is more than enough time to cover the material! With solving past papers & getting used to the exam techniques simultaneously! Goodluck, you’ve got this! It’s definitely possible but work hard and I promise you you’ll get to ur goal eventually!
@@igcse8777 That’s brilliant thank you so much! I assume you had the same scenario and had to do them in a year. Hope your results come out as expected and you get into your dream university! By any chance what subjects did you take and did you use any specific resources to study, notetaking, flashcards?
most days! some days it was 5/6 and if i'd gone out the night before and the next day was a weekend i'd wake up late but there was no difference to me between term and non-term time in terms of how much i studied
@@ellamae6841 8pm is ideal but it depends - most days i probably averaged 9.30-10 although i got ill all the time so would not recommend we are working on a better schedule
My gcse grades were quite low, around 5s and 6s due to my circumstances. Over the summer i have really thought about doing medicine or sciences at university but my gcse grades are too low for the entry requirements. Would it be sensible to resit some of the core subjects (maths, english sciences) alongside doing a levels?
i would definitely check whether or not certain courses accept resits - particularly with medicine. i think science wise you should be okay with a resit, so i would encourage doing so if you feel like you're up for it
Hey! Would you recommend choosing an a level subject that you did not do for GCSEs? I want to choose computer science and business studies for a levels however I did not do these subjects for GCSE. Is it harder but still manageable with hard work or do you not recommend doing it at all?😊
hi! i can't speak for business, but in my opinion computer science is perfectly fine to do without gcse knowledge - you'll obviously have to spend a little more time as you go through in filling in the gaps, but nothing less than achievable. if you want to study computer science then i can't see that your lack of gcse would impact you significantly. assuming that your sixth form/college say the same about taking business i would assume that that's fine too :)
What did u do/what do u recommend doing in yr12 summer? I plan on getting a few drafts of my personal statement done, and revising up some yr12 content so it’s fresh for September but is there anything u particularly found was crucial/useful
i spent most of my year 12 summer working through all my epq reading and my computer science coursework, which (if you do neither epq, nor a subject that requires coursework) perhaps isn't very helpful. honestly, i'd say the only thing at that point with any real time pressure is your personal statement, but it sounds like you're already on top of everything tbh so if you're already working on that you seem to me to be good to go. i wouldn't stress about doing revision every day over year 12 summer, especially if you feel like you paid attention in class and worked hard throughout the first year, it'll prob take a week or two before you go back to refresh your mind and commit everything. best tactic for reviewing content quickly from my experience is definitely blurting with mind maps (www.bcu.ac.uk/exams-and-revision/best-ways-to-revise/the-blurting-method) :)
hi! i found out last night (after I'd released the video 🙄) that they're scrapping the PS for UCAS 2025 so I am going to wait to have a look at what their new system is gonna be then maybe make a vid on it!! if you have any questions in the meantime though or i forget about the video please email me hehe
pros and cons to consider! an epq would always look good on your PS. it could be beneficial in swaying the interview your way - they may ask you questions on the subject that you did your EPQ on, which is good bc you'll defo know smth about it. also, when you get there you'll be a step ahead on some bits (e.g. i did my epq on prime numbers so when we did the second half of our 'foundations' module, which was on prime numbers, i already knew everything). an epq does take a lot of time though and definitely isn't worth it if that time means sacrificing an a-level grade. i'd say if you have a topic in mind and it's something that you don't mind dedicating some extra time, particularly over summer, into researching then go for it. worst case scenario is you start and give up and are a little bit smarter anyway :)
m in the summer between year 12 + 13, not doing my best, do you have any advice for me to get back on track to get my grade goals? i dont know where to start
based on my strong opinion that understanding is the best way to boost your grade i would honestly start at the gcse level in all of your subjects. go online and grab the gcse syllabus (or an old textbook if you still have them) and go on bbc or youtube and work through every chapter and note down all the ones you aren't sure on, then go back and revise content only (personally i think if you're honest with yourself no need to do full gcse papers again maybe just a couple of practice questions). then i would go on youtube and do *chapter of something from year 12* topic review and make a mindmap of that content on a whiteboard or scrap paper, then do blurting rounds so look at the mindmap for a couple minutes, then try to rewrite it all and repeat. do this using spaced repetition like with flashcards for every topic over the summer. when you feel like you have a topic mindmap memorised i would move onto some practice questions using the textbook to fill in any gaps and hopefully at a minimum you come into year 13 with a strong foundation of all the y12 stuff :)
there is a morning routine video out there which has been the same since forever (it's called my 5am morning routine) ! evening routine is a shout i didn't realise people made those maybe i'll hop on it
hi! i think physics is easier to begin with because the 'harder topics' for me are part of the year 2 content. on the flip side, further maths is hard to begin with because they are introducing completely unfamiliar concepts, but it gets easier with time
this may be a stupid irrelevant question but backpack, totebag, or messenger bag? bc im rlly struggling for what to use as I dont have the money to buy a new one during the school year and my old bag has fallen apart completrly
@yisun-hp1vd ooo I used a tote bag in sixth form and a handbag at uni which gave me shoulder pain (even if looked more swag) but i would say if you're carrying a laptop 100% a backpack, which is what I'll do for uni. If you're just carrying a few lighter books I liked my tote bag but definitely get a more expensive one so the handles don't break (my urban one held up really well)
tbh what might be easiest now is if, before you start a new topic in a-level, you spend the weekend reviewing all of the gcse content from that subject. i bet you're getting busy so no need to cram it all now just do it piece by piece alongside
@@yanr4n Thanks for your advice I'll try it out and lyk🙏. Also in physics rn we're doing matter and radiation but I can't rly find vids on them in the phys channels you mentioned, is that smth u noticed asw?

Other than the daily to do list, do u implement other stuff like gratitude journaling/ reading log etc? And how is ur generall monthly set upp in ur planner? Hehe sorry i yapped alott
as a serial yapper you can never talk too much. i use the ^ to indicate classes just so that i can separate them clearly from the o for events. at the start of the month i have a monthly overview on one page, then on the other page i have my top 3 goals, my work schedule, and my youtube schedule. when i'm not working i use the work schedule bit for a daily gratitude segment (not enough space to be grateful and at work). that would make july 12 pages long - 2 pages for the intro, then a 2 page spread for each week :p

Is revising atleast 1 hour for each subject a day okay? If I were to start going over subjects on the first day and stay consistent and go through exam questions every day
people just make it hard for themselves by not ever studying until the last minute. if you do a couple hours every weekday after school you'll be more than fine for the large majority of your school journey :)

@@PrincessElizabethBah i don't read loads into bio and chem tbh but maths wise i really liked 'the music of the primes' by du sautoy and 'the great mathematical problems' by stewart as introductions into number theory and pure maths . they're a good mix of causal and mathematical talk for being able to read without having to take notes or think major. a niche one is 'math on trial' that looks at the manipulation of stats in court: not majorly mathematical but an interesting read. bill bryson is also really good imo: i read 'the body' a while back which is bio related and 'a short history of nearly everything' is a classic :)
Sure it was hard but now I get to brag extra on TH-cam :) I did study everyday for it bc for me doing well academically is what matters the most, so studying everyday to do better was a good use of my time. For some people, being socially active or partaking in a sport or music might be their biggest goal and so no point really in doing so much studying. You can always get into any university with just 3 A-Levels (although those 3 may need to be 3 A* grades). I think the biggest reason for taking 4 is to give yourself some leeway, so that you can either drop one later or you can flunk an exam. That was particularly why I took Computer Science. Some universities do express preference for 4 if you're aiming high, but they aren't allowed to write an offer on 4 A-Levels, so technically anything is possible with 3. Overall, I think that you should take 3 unless you think that you're going to get grades like A*A*A* or A*A*A. There's no point taking 4 if that means that all your subjects suffer (like BBBB is usually a worse outcome than AAB)
@@yanr4n thank you so much for answering! My grades are great but there is always space for improvement, and I really want to go to a good university. I try to focus on school, but also do some extracurriculars and volunteering. I’m still thinking whether I should do 4 A-levels, it’s quite risky because as you said it might affect my grades….
@@s_d429 If you're unsure when the time comes start with 4 and drop one the moment you start to feel like you don't have enough time. You might find that actually the workload is okay for you, but you might also find that it's too much with your other activies. That's probably the strategy with the lowest risk

its really good, a lot of studies to learn though they are for evaluation points and they get easier to remember once you write essays/ create essay plans. also dont underestimate the sciency part of it, i do aqa and theres a whole subtopic on biopsych, biological approach etc. though if you are interested in doing other STEM subjects eg. biology, its stuff you already need to know/ should know/ stuff you will learn in a level. the essay writing is less complicated. theres a lot of content though so be warned by dont let that put you off, every subject has a lot of content tbh. hope this helps!
to be honest i think your best bet for dealing with burnout is trying to study for less time, but with more focus. it's kinda hard to get into a proper flow state but you should always be working (i say should tbh i often fail at this) with no distractions at all just you, a clean table, glass of water, and your work. if you study like this for 4 hours a day (on top of class time) there is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't achieve top grades. i'd be so strict with the timings to begin with - tell yourself that you have to sit there and either a. be bored or b. study for those hours, but then outside of those hours you must absolutely not do anything to do with school. that way over time you'll set a good distinction between academic and non academic time and hopefully your brain will start to be able to wind down outside of your academic hours so that you aren't stressed and miserable and overworked 24/7

ee thank you for being here!!
thank you sm for these tips!

@@yanr4n aww tysm for the detailed quick response, i'll definitely try and get some work which links to the course im applying for- appreciate it sm!

How did you prepare for maths a level during year 11? And what maths books are your fav x
i think maths a-level follows rlly nice from gcse so just checking that you truly understand all of the content so that when you start year 12 you have a super solid foundation is gonna be the best thing you can do. most of my maths reads are pretty niche lol my fav one that i read during sixth form was probably 'the music of the primes' x

im starting yr13 in september and i feel so behind already, im struggling to see what to get done first with my ps, coursework, revision and lnat coming up - do you have any specific organization tips? maybe how you organise your planner to suit you or how to know what has to be done first? love your videos btw
hi! there is an organisation vid coming (although probably not very soon hehe), so i'd say i would prioritise your lnat, then coursework for now, then ps then revision around all that. my planner is a monthly overview, then everyday i have a section for my daily to do list. most days looked the same for me during sixth form so i didn't need anything more complex than that - just filling in the revision specifics day to day. priority wise i think getting into uni is the most important thing, thus the lnat being the highest priority. the ps would come next but i think coursework has more urgency as you won't want to be doing that when you're in the midst of revision later on (and i am of the opinion that your ps doesn't really matter anyway). lucky for me everything was over with by september so i just had to do my maths - i suppose you have a lot more coursework to worry about with your subjects :( good luck and keep holding on!!
can you please make a video on how you plan your days out and some time management tips
organisation system video is in the works ;)
you've picked subjects im applying for, any advice? love the video!
biggest piece of advice is to make flashcards (or mindmaps or whatever you prefer) as you go along - you're gonna have hella content with the subject combination and physics a-level is a real bugger so if you have flashcards pre made you can probably sustain maths and compsci with them for the majority of your time

@@crtjoys I can see both sides to the argument! Hey is it possible to achieve a or a* when at gcse you got average grades like 5 and 6/7 😢(great vid BTW)
100% yes! if you're willing to put the time in there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to reach the top grades. you just might have to spend a bit of time consolidating your gcse knowledge up to the 8/9 grade and then you're on a level playing field
You woke up at 04:00 during term and out of term during A-levels?
most days! some days it was 5/6 and if i'd gone out the night before and the next day was a weekend i'd wake up late but there was no difference to me between term and non-term time in terms of how much i studied
@@yanr4n what time did you have to sleep at to do this?

My gcse grades were quite low, around 5s and 6s due to my circumstances. Over the summer i have really thought about doing medicine or sciences at university but my gcse grades are too low for the entry requirements. Would it be sensible to resit some of the core subjects (maths, english sciences) alongside doing a levels?
i would definitely check whether or not certain courses accept resits - particularly with medicine. i think science wise you should be okay with a resit, so i would encourage doing so if you feel like you're up for it
Abt to start sixth form in september and this is definitely the best prep video ive watched!! so helpful 🩷🩷

Excellent
@@yanr4n thank you so much!! Genuinely appreciate the advice❤️

Hi what planner do you use?
@@Stormysea444 I think it's the stationery island a5 dotted bullet journal :)
Doing the same subjects as you but im not sure about EPQ. what do you advise, i want to study aerospace engineering at Imperial College London
the EPQ, if based around engineering, would stand out to the university more because you show interest in the subject outside of academics
pros and cons to consider! an epq would always look good on your PS. it could be beneficial in swaying the interview your way - they may ask you questions on the subject that you did your EPQ on, which is good bc you'll defo know smth about it. also, when you get there you'll be a step ahead on some bits (e.g. i did my epq on prime numbers so when we did the second half of our 'foundations' module, which was on prime numbers, i already knew everything). an epq does take a lot of time though and definitely isn't worth it if that time means sacrificing an a-level grade. i'd say if you have a topic in mind and it's something that you don't mind dedicating some extra time, particularly over summer, into researching then go for it. worst case scenario is you start and give up and are a little bit smarter anyway :)

m in the summer between year 12 + 13, not doing my best, do you have any advice for me to get back on track to get my grade goals? i dont know where to start
based on my strong opinion that understanding is the best way to boost your grade i would honestly start at the gcse level in all of your subjects. go online and grab the gcse syllabus (or an old textbook if you still have them) and go on bbc or youtube and work through every chapter and note down all the ones you aren't sure on, then go back and revise content only (personally i think if you're honest with yourself no need to do full gcse papers again maybe just a couple of practice questions). then i would go on youtube and do *chapter of something from year 12* topic review and make a mindmap of that content on a whiteboard or scrap paper, then do blurting rounds so look at the mindmap for a couple minutes, then try to rewrite it all and repeat. do this using spaced repetition like with flashcards for every topic over the summer. when you feel like you have a topic mindmap memorised i would move onto some practice questions using the textbook to fill in any gaps and hopefully at a minimum you come into year 13 with a strong foundation of all the y12 stuff :)

@yisun-hp1vd ooo I used a tote bag in sixth form and a handbag at uni which gave me shoulder pain (even if looked more swag) but i would say if you're carrying a laptop 100% a backpack, which is what I'll do for uni. Hey im ngl i slacked off during the holidays and did not brush up on ANY gcse content. Not rly sure how I should do it throughout six form tho?

Wasn’t it hard to do 5 A-Levels?
Did you study everyday and would you recommend taking more than 3 A-Levels?

My grades are great but there is always space for improvement, and I really want to go to a good university. I try to focus on school, but also do some extracurriculars and volunteering.

@@s_d429 If you're unsure when the time comes start with 4 and drop one the moment you start to feel like you don't have enough time. to be honest i think your best bet for dealing with burnout is trying to study for less time, but with more focus. it's kinda hard to get into a proper flow state but you should always be working (i say should tbh i often fail at this) with no distractions at all just you, a clean table, glass of water, and your work. if you study like this for 4 hours a day (on top of class time) there is absolutely no reason why you shouldn't achieve top grades. i'd be so strict with the timings to begin with - tell yourself that you have to sit there and either a. be bored or b. study for those hours, but then outside of those hours you must absolutely not do anything to do with school. that way over time you'll set a good distinction between academic and non academic time and hopefully your brain will start to be able to wind down outside of your academic hours so that you aren't stressed and miserable and overworked 24/7
did you do a gap year?
technically yes my linkedin says gap year but i did study at university for two terms before changing course :)
