  • In this video I'm going to go over as much of Sytrus as possible so that you can more easily navigate your way through this plugin, and start making your own sounds from scratch. Even though this synth has been around for a long time, it's capable of doing a LOT of different things. There's a lot to cover in this video, so I'm going to do my best to at least talk about all the main things you need to know about, but if there's something that you feel is really important that I left out of the tutorial please leave a comment below and let everyone know! Hope you enjoy the video!

    edit: there are other ways you can do this efficiently because many people have reported that the following doesn’t work: 6:03 you actually can automate anything in any plugin. Just because thee's not a 'create automation' option that doesn't mean that you can't automate it. Just tweak the thing that you want to automate and then immediately go to tools and then at 'last tweaked' and then 'create automation clip' and there you have it

    This is great. The synth has so many options and complexity built into it that, at least for me, a tutorial was needed to explain some of it. Thank you very much! Also, for some reason I always misread it as STY-rus, and this is the first time I realized my mistake. lol

    Dude you actually took the time to explain Sytrus! I don’t even think Image-Line bothered to do this lol haven’t seen one from them yet. You deserve a Sub (just subbed) and a box of hand sanitizers (i hear they’re very valuable these days) I had given up on Sytrus years ago primarily because it just wasn’t worth the CPU overload and the UI just looks overwhelming. I might have to give it a second chance.

  • @EversonBernardes

    Fixed frequency for the operators is useful when you want to modulate stuff at a set frequency. Set one of the Operators at the fixed frequency you want FM/RM the others and it won't follow the pitches you're playing. It can do from LFO to musical pitches.
    Say you want to add some subtle vibrato to a sound: set Operator 6 to a fixed 4 - 6hz, modulate all the other Operators by this one and there you go. Then you have the options of either setting the Mod Envelope on the other Operators to bring this into the sound or, set the Volume Envelope on Operator 6 to do the same thing.

      @tuber12321 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AnotherMonster Thanks for responding. I think I figured it out. "Operator" means something like "oscillator with lots of other controls." And operators are related to each other either through subtractive synthesis (by sending each row directly to the output), or can be used to pitch/ring modulate each other (by selecting the FM/RM tab and enabling the columns that you want to use as modulators for each row). Sorry if you already explained all of this.

    thanks, i'm determined to suss out sytrus now (can't afford serum or sylenth) and this is a very imformative vid :) you skipped over the main tabs adsr and filter adsr mentioning "additive" and "subtractive", I've watched three of your sytrus vids and you don't really play with these I've noticed, I;m not sure what I'm asking now lol! But - can sytrus potentially make Trance genre sounds to compete with serum and sylenth, I know Trance isn't your genre and any light you can share will be very appreciated, cheers :-}

    • @AnotherMonster
      @AnotherMonster  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Neil MacD I’d say it definitely can compete with those synths. I don’t really mess with the adsr section you’re talking about because I always use the one within the operator in the envelope. I haven’t really tried to make any super complex sounds using sytrus yet so I’m sure it might be useful in certain situations. I’d say pretty much all synths do some form of subtractive synthesis. Basically any time you add a filter onto your sound that’s subtractive. As far as additive synthesis it’s not like harmor which is designed to be an additive synth and has crazy potential to do all sorts of things. But there is the option to do some simple additive syntheses in sytrus. Basically the concept is you’re stacking sine waves on each other to create a more complex waveform

    • @AnotherMonster
      @AnotherMonster  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JNB lol it’s a lot for sure. Actually using presets and taking a look at how they were made by reverse engineering the sound can be a good way to help you learn the synth a bit better. Once you have a decent fundamental understanding of sound design it’s not to difficult to figure out most synths. FM is definitely a weaker point for me right now. And sytrus is especially insane because there’s just so much you can do. I’ve been really learning all the ins and outs of this synth for a couple months now.

    I'd add one thing to this tutorial - you keep saying all creative and crazy thing one can do here, but you never really pause it all and say - let's create something crazy (not very complex)now... and just do it. Hands on sort of. For those who don't know what creative and crazy means in this case :)

      Dmitri Terletski Yeah I knew this tutorial was going to be super long and I didn’t want to drag it out any longer than necessary, but I do have some more sytrus tutorials on here where we actually dive in and make specific sounds. hey i think you made a bit of a mistake in your explanation: "digital frequency modulation is actually phase modulation". digital FM is called FSK = frequency shift keying, while digital PM is called PSK = phase shift keying. you may have confused the two because you can demodulate an FSK by looking at the phase differential (grossly oversimplified but i doubt anyone cares about the actual math) or by misunderstanding continuous phase FSK?

    • @AnotherMonster
      @AnotherMonster  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      G. S. I’m definitely not an expert in the science of this stuff, but I think I said it correctly. I don’t think FSK or PSK have anything to do with digital synths. Its possible I’m incorrect, but I’ve never heard the term PSK when referring to digital FM synthesis.

    • @TheWhizzard
      @TheWhizzard 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AnotherMonster alright, it seems we're both somewhat correct but i spoke too soon. the terms psk and fsk come from radio communications, wich is probably why you never heard them. they are used to transmit digital signals. now about the original "mistake": the phrasing was just a bit weird, but i looked a bit deeper into it and did a bit of maths. digital frequency modulation synthesis, according to wikipedia, is typically implemented as a phase modulated signal. what this means is, that a "regular" FM is that your basic signal is multiplied with a modulating signal: f(t) = sin(2*pi*f_signal*t) * sin(2*pi*f_mod*t). what "implemented as a phase modulated signal" means is: f(t) = sin(2*pi*f_signal*t + sin(2*pi*f_mod*t)). if you apply some trigonometry to one of the terms and shuffle it around a bit you realize they are actually the same but written in a different way, but the latter probably easier to implement physically. in conclusion, i was wrong in comparing it to FSK, as purpose, usecase and implementation are different, even though the math is the same. you were "wrong" in that it is a frequency modulation, but in the case of continuous signals, FM and PM are effectively the same, mathematically speaking.
