Producers are usually afraid when open sytrus for the first time, seems too complex, but with that comes a huge flexibility and power. Sytrus and Harmor are easily the most powerfull synths of FL Studio. If you learn how to use them, external synths are virtually unnecesary. Great explanation! I made the same in depth, almost 2 hrs of videos lol.
Sytrus is really goddamn great and I use it all the time, BUT, I wish it had: - automatable waveshape parameters (tension, shape, skew, sine shaper) - the same in-envelope visualization (playback header visualization along the x-axis whe you play the patch, showing where you're going!) as Harmor, Serum, Vital etc; it's just easier to see where you're going; note - this would be Very Helpful Whenever There's Many Envelopes Going On at the Same time and when tweaking the patch afterwards! It's easy enough to adjust the envelope without visual cues when you're BUILDING the sound - but Afterwards, going back to it and tweaking requires a lot of imagination, since you may have many different envelopes! It can get confusing really fast. It literally reguires you to make your own extensive notes for the patch! - a modulation matrix too (simply because it's easy to forget what you have and haven't done despite the orange bars; there's so many tabs to browse when checking - also, if you don't have sustain set as the end point of an envelope, the longest envelope determines the sustain Length of the whole patch! That's not in the manual c:)
From explaining every FL plugin to giving us everything we need to know about FM synthesis in 20 minutes, Michael is on a mission to provide us a universal theory of everything by year's end
Just explaining what every FL plugin is and how to use it shaved years of my learning curve. I can get right to it instead of wasting hours trying to find what I'm looking for.
I can't believe you just explained Sytrus to me in under 20 min. You're a blessing to all new producers. Thank you for your great videos! This is by far my favorite TH-cam Channel.
9 years of experimenting and reading and trying to understand FM Synthesis and here is this random guy on youtube with a British accent laying it down in 20 minutes.
YOU ABSOLUTE GOD. I fell asleep last night watching somebody else's Sytrus tutorial and literally dreamt about DMing you to ask you to make stock synth tutorials for Sytrus, Harmor, Sakura, etc. And then I woke up to this.
One note about the video: Turning up the FX knob on a operator row will send that operator *raw* signal through the effects and output that. If you want the filters to be applied before the FX, you have to turn up the FX knob that sits on that filter row in the matrix. Neat thing about the operators in Sytrus: you can set them up so they're working with multiples of the fundamental frequency (1x, 2x, 3x, 0.5x) , good for getting say a sub voice, or a harmonizing voice one fifth above the fundamental; or you can set them up so they're running at a constant frequency (say, 10Hz), useful for ring modulation. One neat trick using FM is setting up one OP (I usually do it with OP6) with a constant frequency, say 4Hz and using it to modulate the other operators. Vibrato! You can then control OP6 volume to define how much vibrato you want, through an envelope, etc.
Thank you for adding this!! I noticed him turning up the fx knob in the operator row instead of the fx row and was very confused. This clarified it perfectly! Also, thank you for the helpful tips!
I've been waiting for this! Sytrus is one of my favourite synths and it's a shame it gets neglected fairly often. The 6 oscillators really give you so much control, and so many ways to get to whatever sound you're looking for. Some of the other things that weren't mentioned, but are really cool: 1) Harmonic editor - Really powerful for shaping sound. Allows you to additively synthesize sounds and merge that with the FM matrix and subtractive elements to really shape sound. There's one for each of the 6 oscillators. 2) Unison editor - You can individually control parameters like volume, panning, pitch, modulation amount, etc. for each unison voice. Seriously powerful.
I’ve watched a bunch of other videos on sytrus, and all of them just made me more overwhelmed. You made very good sense of this for me and I feel confident to make my own sounds with it now! Thank you.
After decades of having FL Studio on my computers, I’m finally making a concerted effort to use it. Discovering your channel has been a real find....and at last I can get my head around Sytrus! Thanks very much for these fantastic tutorials.
The tutorials that is meant to teach those who need to understand sytrus. Why others can be like this guy,he is explaining like a real living human. Salute, and god bless,I have downloaded this video so that I can keep watching it while doing my sessions in my bedroom studio.
Been using Sytrus for so long without touching the operators and filters, now after watching this I finally understand what all those knobs and matrix do thank you so much.
I'VE BEEN USING SYTRUS WRONG ALL ALONG!! I usually just load a preset and play around with the knobs without any idea what they do... This was so helpful!!!!! Thank you!
i'm just blown away on how much stuff i can do now! I was just using ready to use sounds from libraries and now i'm making amazing stuff out of nothing. THIS IS SOOOOO GOOOOD AAAAAAAAAAA THANK YOU A LOT!!!
Such a powerful and underrated synth. It's a beast. My favorite thing about it is the numerous ways you can morph, manipulate and recreate every sound into something completely different and new. I recreated about 85% of the sytrus soundbank several years ago. Little hidden gem: go to the sequencers section in the bank and one by one deconstruct them using the matrix. You'll reveal all kinds of cool sounds and loops you can use in your tracks.
I was always intimidated and confused using plugins like Sytrus to design my own synths. I heavily relied on presets and tweaking the sound. You explained and demonstrated this plugin in such a simple and succinct manner! You've provided me a new tool to work with! Excellent, well made video, simply explained!
Michael, You just saved me from having to buy Serum - I can now achieve everything I need with my newly gained knowledge of Sytrus. You are a formidable teacher and incredibly talented. All power to you!
I should first appreciate your calmness when teaching and explaining in any of your tutorials, it actually a big deal for me so thank you. For this tutorial about cytrus youv given me an entire new understanding to what i thought i knw . Thank you again and Weldone. All the way from Nigeria!!!
My biggest issue with synths before this video was the reliability on the pre-made factory patches. I could not go beyond them and had to completely rely on those sounds or always be on the lookout for new synths plugins. This tutorial made it so much easy for me that now I can go ahead and try making different sounds to the very least, and gradually master it. Thank you so much!!
The best way to explain a complex synth under 20 minutes and everyone understands it. Its the only thing we all needed and Michael did it. Who has the register to mark me present. I am on a mission to have In the mix to be registered as a university.
Michael, thanks for the many things you've done. Every time i sought help elsewhere, I have to come back to you. Luckily, I discovered you in my early years. FL Studio owes you LOADS
The video we producers don’t deserve, but CERTAINLY THE ONE WE NEEDED!! I’ve always loved the presets I used with sytrus but this video is gold for me! Thanks so much🙏🏼
@@migats2160 I would recommend they opposite. turn every knob there is; preferably combined. I don't know what that prism knobs do in harmor, but I created some pretty sick rising synths in combination with the phaser. I get what you say; it would be a waste of time to be sending OSCs to filters and FX without knowing what you are routing. I also think it is wise to learn the basis theory of waves, filters, effects and how your go-to synth is routed, so that you can use that same principle to other synths and reduce the time to turn random knobs in unknown synths. Another fun thing to do is to examine the presets and just undo every effect and filter until you get to the raw oscillator.
This video is very helpful! I've always used Sytrus but never fully understood the potential, even with trial and error and guessing what the accessories do. This will greatly improve my sound quality when producing! :)
I really love the concept of matrix it really makes sense to me now Just wanted to say I love your thumbnails, they are so attractive and eye catching :)
This is the most definitive way to Learn FL stuff with ease. Thank you Michael. Really. 😁 All the things I havent explored, you're making me wanna revisit them 😂
All I have to say Michael is THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! You really know when to come through for the fam. Would really appreciate a Harmor or Harmless Tutorial next. Big thanks in advance ♥️
I didn't understand Sytrus until you did your beginners and advanced synth video on Serum, then the video on Vital. Because you taught us the vocabulary for general FM and Wavetable Synthesis, I am now able to understand this tutorial and gain something from it. It's weird how everything comes full circle, but that moment when it all just "clicks" is so rewarding. You are the best teacher ever, and you deserve a very highly paid salary at Berkeley or some shit lol.
I watched the tutorial for this on FL Studio's own TH-cam page and while most of it made sense, some of it wasn't clear, this version of it was so much better. I think the pacing was better too. Thanks.
I've just started learning to produce and seriously.....it's ridiculous how helpful you and your videos are. I quite literally find myself swearing with happiness at how relevant and outstanding your content is. Thank you sir!
Great breakdown for beginners. Was just looking at this for the first time yesterday and it took at least an hour to figure out what you explained in 10 minutes.
I'm (VERY) new to FL studio. I'm a long time Reason user. Your video is what has made Sytrus all the sudden extremely exciting. (and I'm REALLY glad it comes with the producer edition)
I watched a few guides to Sytrus, but yours is definitely the best. You explained the basics of its operation very clearly. I will be grateful if you do similar tutorials to other FL Studio synthesizers, especially Harmor.
