Their drummer Danny Carey is probably in the top 3 of active, living drummers... and probably #1. As a drummer myself, I refer to him as "The Octopus" because that man can play a distinctly different pattern on each appendage simultaneously. He is also one of the few that can not only play odd time signatures, but also play a different time signature than the main melody and have it resolve at the end of the phrase. To the band's credit, they can still follow that. Most musicians could never "find the one" if the drummer did that.
Not to mention the fact that Danny has been quoted saying "I've never played to a click on stage in my life..." Which in itself is amazing but when you add in his odd time signatures shows just how much of a legend he really is.
Agreed. Every time I've gone and seen them live, most of the entire concert, I'm just watching him in awe. He's so tall and he sits behind this massive drum set that has so many working parts that never go ignored. Truly an amazing musician to see in action.
@mysticsaxophone4181 without some official scoring system this is all subjective. I also would throw the names Dave Weckl and Vladyslav Ulasevych in the ring. One is contemporary jazz and the other is hybrid metalcore. So when we talk about the best and greatest is it based on reputation, success, talent, skill, or originality? Should we be separating them by genre, or are the greatest drummers only those that can excel in multiple genres?
I like the beginning of the pot because when you hear the vocals alone your mind imagines what the bass line/guitar part might be like. But when the bass line starts, it's nothing like what you have imagined.
"the Pot" is usually a highly requested early in your Tool journey song for several reasons. It has the unusual (but not too unusual) time signatures, great vocals, and just a taste of many of the techniques they employ - while still being accessible for people who are used to 'radio rock'. It's a great song in its own right, but is really the kiddie pool on the beach next to the ocean of the rest of their discography. Lateralus is going to blow your mind. Spiral out!
“Lateralus” is the obvious suggestion, but often people invite new listeners to experience several easier options first. Time signatures, lyrical complexity, and song length are all barriers that can put potential tool fans off. Every song means something to me, so I’d watch no matter.
The engineering on Tool songs is second to none. You can miss many subtleties listening through speakers. Try your next Tool review with good headphones. You won't regret it. More Tool please!!!!! Every album is full of great songs. Pick any one.
Just the most interesting band i have ever heard and my fave in the world, lyrically and musically they are everything i have ever looked for in a band, with time changes and deep interesting lyrics that have led me to want to explore the topics and further my knowledge, which has just made the songs even more incredible to me...Loved the reaction and look forward to more ....Spiral out...
this is as close as Tool get to writing a pop song. I think where it sits in the album makes it a stand out too. It's like a little island of 4/4 punch. Saw them on this tour. Life affirming experience.
Super enjoyed watching/listening to your reaction! I've been a fan of Tool for many, many years! This song's definitely up there for me on that favorites list. It makes me very happy that you enjoyed this one so much! Listening to this now has the same level of impact as it first did all those years ago when it was new. My jaw's always on the floor with Tool. Maynard is the man! :)
Everyone will give their suggestions, but it's always best to just do every track. The two you done are more straightforward, and radio friendly. You're in for a treat.
Absolutely! I get on utube for discovery and to see what others are thinking. In the truck and times at home I still spin records and cds end to end. Most times on repeat🤘😎🤘
I’m probably one of the many people who suggested the pot after your last tool reaction, and it’s because this is one of two or three songs where Maynard’s vocal track is very forward in the mix compared to the rest of their catalogue. Plus it exemplifies his range while also just being a great straight forward song with some seriously punchy bass funk. My next suggestion would be either The Grudge to really demonstrate how the man can really belt a scream, or Aenima for another more forward mixed vocal song that is sonically unlike the other tool songs you’ve heard.
Yes, more TOOOOL!!!! All their songs get easier to listen to with time; the first listen is always chaotic, for the reasons you've described. But during later listens, you know what's coming and it's more comfortable. Still, I love seeing people hear Tool for the first time. Never gets old. Perhaps you could try H., or 46 & 2 next?

Thank you so much Dave! I think tool is the most approachable for other genre specific musicians to try out metal because the musicianship and songwriting are so impressive. I’m so glad you are enjoying the channel 🥰
What I like the most about this song, compared to other Tool songs, I like how different this is mixed compared to most of their work (excluding Vicarious). It feels like they sort of accepted a compromise and mixed it more like modern rock/metal songs are usually mixed but upon reaching that compromise also went right to the deep end of that pool, experimented with the method and did things like recording the bongos with a 3d mic for instance, so it actually sounds like it's coming from behind you instead of just being in the background. It feels like they knew the song was too good to be mixed their traditional way and allowed it to have that wider appeal that will draw in new listeners, and I applaud them for allowing this song to be different.
I might have mentioned it a few times already, but I am never tired to recommend A Perfect Cirle to everyone who wants to explore Maynard Keenan's real potential as a musician. @@SoulSingerDiscovers Haha, I thought you would like a good Douglas Adams reference. The video though is actually behind a disclaimer wall on YT because of the depiction of suicide. Still a very funny video, not the best song they ever made, maybe. Really, I suggest Judith first, to get what they are all about, or Orestes, if you want something live to drop a tear on. Yes, it is one of the bands I really dropped a few tears now and then. That kind of music. That good..... 🙂
It would be interesting to see what you think of the drumcam version of Pneuma. I realize you are more focused on the vocals, but I really think you would enjoy seeing Danny Carey in action. And you can of course still hear Maynard :)
TOOL has always had issues with their concerts being recorded so very few live performances that are quality exist of TOOL in concert and the Pneuma Danny Carey Drum Cam video which has like a gazzillion views is one of the few good recordings. There is Also the live version of Sober which many people are shook by Maynard’s performance which is absolutely chilling. And chilling while he wears a Onesie lol also in the Grudge there is a section where Maynard holds a scream for about 28 seconds or something in that range.
the abrupt end was purposeful, in telling the listener the subject matter of the song has not been resolved. as far as a faded out ending to a song ,I think it would show the mood of the fading song to be ongoing.
I love shit like that! I was the same when I watched my friend watch a performance of one of my favourite songs. It’s like an unspoken connection cos music is the best 🥰💪
Tool are masters of TONE and flawless transitions...among many other things!! Sub'd for more Tool, there's not a bad song in their 30 year discography, and that's no joke!
If you enjoy Maynards writing process and witty attitude I can suggests some songs from his other band Puscifer. The band is very different from Tool and (his other, other band lol) A Perfect Circle. Puscifer seems to be his "having fun" medium and he does a lot of experimentation with it. Not as sombre or serious as Tool but still has the lyrical quality that Maynard is great at. Plus, they are usually always accompanied by very fun and trippy music videos. I suggest: Apocalyptical, The Remedy and The Arsonist. (They also have a song called The Mission which surprisingly features Milla Jovovich from movies like Resident Evil and The 5th Element.)
APC is his 'other band'. Way more well known than Puscifer, which is way more obscure in both renown and style. It's definitely his 'Other, other band'. And let's not even try and think about Mike Patton and his projects.0_o
@@Angatyr34 I wasn't trying to put one in front of the other. I just brought up puscifer first. I figured she might like it because its more on the comedic side. Always have to make a point to let people know that Maynard works with 3 bands on top of a vineyard, restaurant, dojo. Dudes crazy ambitious.
@@tiffanybailey4947 oh, indeed. I was also making a joke, my humour style is often deadpan taking comedic things literally. Sorry if that didn't translate! I forget that people expect internet discussions, especially TH-cam comments to be more hostile, or "well, ACTUALLY...", than collaboratively taking the piss.
@@SoulSingerDiscoversif you do listen to Puscifer, try to find a live version. They have Maynard and Carina Round doing vocals and their harmonies are just incredible, translates incredibly on stage. I know there's a version of the arsonist at rock am ring on TH-cam. He's one of my favourite vocalists ever, such a range of styles and really great to hear between his projects.
I didn't request the song, but Sober and The Pot typically get requested first because their more conventional style is more easily accessible for first time Tool listeners. Once you get the flavour of those, people will then start requesting some of their more out there, more progressive tracks such as Lateralus, The Grudge, Rosetta Stoned etc. The Pot isn't heavily requested because it's the best. It's just one of the best introductions to Tool. I hope you find boundless joy diving deeper into this band. They're absolutely phenomenal!
Maynard is singular in his style. I hope you find your way to Puscifer, his vocal harmonies with Carina Round on say 'Monsoons '. There's a great dvd quality live version up here on TH-cam.
Did you know that Maynard also has his own music project called Puscifer -- which is a farrago of adult humor songs and songs that deal wit more serious topics? Check out the full range of his chameleon like voice in Puscifer and more A.P.C. songs.
The Pot is great but in terms of Tool, for maximum impact, Wings for Marie Parts 1 & 2. When you know the story of the song you're going to need a box of tissues because his voice is heartbreaking on it... Most of the song is 4/4 (pretty rare for them!) with the rising bits in 3/4...
1st time watching you! I liked it. Tool & Opeth are my favorite 2 bands of All time! Both incredibly talented. Both uniquely different. I’ll definitely check out more of you :-)
You know what is fucking fabulous? You are! I love Your TH-cam channel, and cannot wait for the next video! 2 wonderful things came out of England in the 1990's. Tool and Wallace and Grommet! I should go eat some Wendsleydale cheese and listen to the Lateralus album. Keep up the great work, My Fine Scottish Lady!
Oh Scott! I always look forward to seeing your name pop up in the comment section. I am really enjoying tool as a band I think they have some absolutely astonishing songwriting. Also! I love W&G with my whole heart. They are the perfect mix of faulty towers silly and Winnie the Pooh wholesome 😂 Thank you lovely! Have an amazing day 🥰
On the topic of swearing, I had a friend in school growing up who would yell "for the love of all that is F*CKED!" whenever he was angry about something. It was hilarious. Anyone around him couldn't help but laugh, which just made him angrier.
I dig your review. This is my first watch. Forget about keeping up with the time signatures, you’ll drive yourself nuts. This is one of their most straightforward songs though in 4x4. But earphones really make a big difference with Tool sound effects and panning etc. so you may want to listen a second time with headphones. Btw did you watch Sober live? It’s their first big hit in ‘92 I think. His posture is crazy along with his pink pajama dress outfit.
Oh cool, you listened to "The Pot" also; btw, off topic, but "1960-what" was the 1st song I heard by Gregory Porter and it's incredible. Kinda wish I heard his other stuff first because I want more of his songs to be like that and that particular song is the most different from his catalog. Also, off topic, do you know Cassandra Wilson? If not, you might love her. "New Moon Daughter". Try it. Other vocalists you should hear: Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance & solo); Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins, Sun's Signature, Massive Attack, etc), Beth Gibbons (Portishead, Beth Gibbons & Rustin Man). Go get 'em!
"Sober" and "The Pot" are two of the band's more straightforward songs. They're messing around a bit, but everyone's in 4/4. I think Ænima is up your alley. Haha... I made a funny. It's an example of angry Maynard, but in a merciful,Thanos sort of way 😆. Come back to Tool soon! No music videos. Where are your headphones?
I wear nuratrue ear buds. You can’t see them because of my hair! 😂 I will be returning to tool very soon because they blow me away. Thank you so much for watching my dude! 🥰
OH...I'm sure your fans have requested, but in case they haven't: Radiohead "Nude" & "Weird Fishes" (both live From The Basement); I believe you will particularly love the vocal performance in "Nude" even if you're not the biggest Thom Yorke fan.
@@SoulSingerDiscovers really? Outstanding. Ima watch your videos now. Oh if you do Tool again try jambi and since you've heard the best metal band from Texas you should give Stevie Ray Vaughn a look. Texas flood
Vocalists, when people say 'the voice is also an instrument': True! The voice is definitely an instrument! Vocalists, when vocals aren't way too loud in the mix and rob all the other instruments of their impacts: HOW DARE YOU TREAT THE VOICE AS AN INSTRUMENT, IT NEEDS TO BE LOUDEST
Dude, I’ve been gigging for 15 years and I have never heard a singer say anything close to this. Besides, even if a singer asks to be louder in their monitor, a singers instrument is finite. Guitar strings and drum skins can be replaced. BUT if we replaced what you just said with guitarists, well that would be an incredibly accurate statement.
3:31 "It's so unsettling. Does it just come back to 4/4?” It never left 4/4. There are some brief 6/8 sections, but no part of this song is in a complex time signature. Listen to it again. Once the drum kit enters, focus on the snare drum. It keeps a steady beat on 2 and 4 through nearly the entire song. The rest is just heavy syncopation giving a convincing 11 over 8 feel. Each of the 11 beats is 3/16 long, except the last beat is only 2/16 to fit cleanly into 2 bars. For a real headspin, try counting "Pneume."
You had mentioned that you were getting used to more metal style vocals and if you can react to the more extreme examples(and if you haven't been suggested these already), I'd suggest Infant Annihilator- Blasphemian or Slaughter To Prevail- Demolisher
2:40. Well, I’m making light, as I do with difficult subjects, but you might be deaf cuz you don’t have the volume up enough! Also, ever hear of headphones? Amazing invention of about one hundred ten years ago! Makes the sound much closer to your brain, so it feels more important!🤣🌸🌿
Do The Grudge if you want to hear sustained distortion. Do Sober live at Reading 1991 if you want to see an incredibly powerful, disturbing vocal performance.
If that held note at the end impressed you, wait until you hear The Grudge. 😁
Or H.
Or pushit from salival

Totally here to see drum cam reaction! Blowing minds all over the show
The whole as a whole but especially the song writing
the abrupt end was purposeful, in telling the listener the subject matter of the song has not been resolved.
as far as a faded out ending to a song ,I think it would show the mood of the fading song to be ongoing.
Awesome reaction, awesome dialect - Love it.
Liked and following.
Thank you so much 😁
I could listen to your voice all day long ❤
One of my most favorite songs
9:40 when he hit that b5 and your reaction actually made me cry, can't really explain it. So filthy hey. Music is so amazing
It’s so impressive! :)
Fantastic reaction. Can’t wait for literally any other Tool song you do. Not a bad one in the bunch. Commenting for the algorithm. Have a great day!
10:06 "Wow."
You should hear his sustained scream on "The Grudge "
Tool is always my go-to chill music.
Thanks for the recommendations Tiffany, Ill check them out. Definitely returning to Tool, there’s just so much great stuff to get through. 😊
Definitely! I’ve got the grudge and laterus on the go for my next tool vids. Thanks for watching my dude 🥰
That bass, though. Drums, too😮
I concur! 🤯
Love your accent and funny editing. Thanks!
Thank you Anton 🥰
Maynard is singular in his style. I hope you find your way to Puscifer, his vocal harmonies with Carina Round on say 'Monsoons '. There's a great dvd quality live version up here on TH-cam.
I’ll check it out, thanks my dude 😊
Did you know that Maynard also has his own music project called Puscifer -- which is a farrago of adult humor songs and songs that deal wit more serious topics? Check out the full range of his chameleon like voice in Puscifer and more A.P.C. songs.
Love your reactions, I know you did Sober, but you should still do the live version. Its worth the view.
I have that on my list, don’t you worry 🥰
@@SoulSingerDiscovers BTW, love your singing. Enjoying your videos, maybe you should do a reaction/analysis of Lala Hathaway with Snarky Puppy
You've got a great voice and amazingly savage attitude! And you dig TOOL!🤘 😆🤘
And you have the grinch as your profile pic! You are clearly a person of culture, and I dig it. Thank you so much for watching my dude 🥰🥰
@@SoulSingerDiscovers The grinch has sort of become my online persona/TH-cam thing. I'm glad you dig it. He's got attitude AND heart!
I’ll definitely check out more of you :-)
Thanks for watching my dude 😊
You know what is fucking fabulous? You are! I love Your TH-cam channel, and cannot wait for the next video! 2 wonderful things came out of England in the 1990's. Tool and Wallace and Grommet! I should go eat some Wendsleydale cheese and listen to the Lateralus album. Keep up the great work, My Fine Scottish Lady!
Tool isn't from England m8. ^^'
@@fuselpeter5393I'm guessing he might be referring to them gaining popularity from England
Have an amazing day 🥰
Oh girl, you need to listen to The Grudge if you wanna hear some soul screaming lmao
I will do :)
Maynard's tidal volume is pretty legendary. Him and Myles Kennedy are up there in that regards imo.
It’s super cool the thinking behind it 😊
It's 4/4 all the way from his first word, slips to 3/4 and back to 4/4, but you can tap a 4/4 all the way through the tune.
On the topic of swearing, I had a friend in school growing up who would yell "for the love of all that is F*CKED!" whenever he was angry about something. It was hilarious. Anyone around him couldn't help but laugh, which just made him angrier.
I love this one and I’m stealing it to use but I will credit your friend and you 😂
Great reaction, thanks
I dig your review. This is my first watch. Forget about keeping up with the time signatures, you’ll drive yourself nuts. This is one of their most straightforward songs though in 4x4. But earphones really make a big difference with Tool sound effects and panning etc. so you may want to listen a second time with headphones. Btw did you watch Sober live? It’s their first big hit in ‘92 I think. His posture is crazy along with his pink pajama dress outfit.
Defo returning to tool very soon! I’ll check it out. Thanks for watching my dude 😊
The TOOL rabbit hole goes deep!🤘
More TOOL! My faves besides the two you did are 46 &2, Pneuma, and Fear Inoculum.
46&2 is next on the tool list! 😊
Thank you so much i told u would like this one schism next please then the grudge you'll appreciate everything Tool has to offer!
Go get 'em!
The entire Laretalus album!!🙏
🤘😎🤘 Spiral OUT!
The Grudge will show his range. Highly recommended
idk why but Rush Anthem busted into my brain listening to this
Gotta, gotta, gotta do “The Grudge” next. Will blow you away!
I promise! 😊💪
Ænima is a great track to listen to when you're just dipping your toes in the Tool Pool. 😏
@@sVieira151 I think that's why "The Pot" is suggested early on too.
@@heyskipj oh, I understand. I was just trying to make a joke about learning to swim 🥲
I wear nuratrue ear buds. You can’t see them because of my hair! 😂 I will be returning to tool very soon because they blow me away. Thank you so much for watching my dude! 🥰
@@SoulSingerDiscovers Haha... aren't Tool fans the creepiest? I was literally stalking your ears😆 Cheers!
Tool is definitely a ride!! Gotta check out Avatar sometime, Hail the Apocalypse or Chimp mosh pit would be fun! 🍺 Cheers
OH...I'm sure your fans have requested, but in case they haven't: Radiohead "Nude" & "Weird Fishes" (both live From The Basement); I believe you will particularly love the vocal performance in "Nude" even if you're not the biggest Thom Yorke fan.
Yeah yeah Tool is GOAT! Blah blah. YOU are AMAZING, AWESOME, GORGEOUS!!! I have fallen in love with your voice. I'm off now to find all your music!!
Thank you Lewis! That’s so incredibly sweet, I really appreciate that. Let me know what you think 🥰
@@SoulSingerDiscovers your songs transported me to elegant nightclubs and smokey speak easies in a Humphrey Bogart movie. Beautiful
Would you believe me if I told you that was exactly what I was going for 😂
@@SoulSingerDiscovers really? Outstanding. Ima watch your videos now. Oh if you do Tool again try jambi and since you've heard the best metal band from Texas you should give Stevie Ray Vaughn a look. Texas flood
the best intro in the history of youtube
I mean I think so but then I’m a little biased 😆🥰
Maynard is a very special and unique singer
How about Mama by My Chemical Romance (after Lateralus of course 😂😂😂)
Oh I haven’t been suggested this yet! I will check it out! :)
You have the best accent i've ever heard
I think so but I’m biased 😂
"H" if you want to hear Maynard's beautiful range..."H"
If you want Maynard at his most primal for vocals check out "Ticks and Leeches" and check out the reason why they wrote this song
Do “Parabol/ Parabola” by Tool
They need to be listened together in that order without stopping….because parabol transitions into Parabola
Will do my dude! 😊
3:31 "It's so unsettling. Does it just come back to 4/4?”
It never left 4/4.
And you have a signed Gregory Porter record? 30,000 feet up in the AIR!
Yes I do! It’s one of my most prized possessions. See them twice. Met him once thoroughly nice guy. 😊
They ask for tool songs because every tool song you listen to is their best song😂
The Grudge!! 29 second scream!!
Got it on the list 😊
Think she might like Aenema next.
But you have to watch and listen live version of Sober! There's the real Maynard, one of the most beautiful live performance I've ever seen!!
I absolutely will at some point 😊
Give Lateralis a listen. That’s all
Will do! 😊
You had me at F@!#
Oh this was quite cool. I like listening to new bands
You had mentioned that you were getting used to more metal style vocals and if you can react to the more extreme examples(and if you haven't been suggested these already), I'd suggest Infant Annihilator- Blasphemian or Slaughter To Prevail- Demolisher
Putting on my list now 😊💪
A.i. Music machine
The Evil ones didn’t tell you?
440hz. Keep their heads ringing 🔑
Yep I lost about 60-70% of my hearing in my left ear when I was 19. I have nuratrue earbuds in. You can’t see them because of my hair 👍
thank you for that intro! lol
I aim to bring lunacy to the people 😂🥰
Do The Grudge if you want to hear sustained distortion.
Do Sober live at Reading 1991 if you want to see an incredibly powerful, disturbing vocal performance.
