  • are mildliners overrated? honest review of zebra mildliners + swatch
    hey everyone! i hope everyone is continuing to practice social distancing during this time. first off, i want to thank you guys for the tremendous support on my channel; it brings a huge smile to my face every single day. truly, this channel is one of the greatest things that has happened to me.
    in this video, i wanted to address the rising popularity of one of the most famous highlights, the zebra mildliners. i've seen many highlighter comparison videos on youtube, and in almost every video, the zebra mildliners are one of the top winners. it recently struck me as to whether these highlighters were, whether we wanted to admit it or not, at least a little overrated. in this video, i hope to answer that question by comparing them with generic highlighters that are found here in the states, the sharpie brand highlighters.
    i hope you found this video useful, and if you made it this far in the description, be sure to comment, like and subscribe. i'll see you guys soon, and take care.

    Honestly the only reason the stationery community loves it is because of the huge colour range that no other company offers of course I have seen many fake zebra mildliners at more affordable prices though

    This is a great review on mildliner, but keep in mind that it varies on what type of fineliner and gel pen u use cus some tend to dry quicker while others are slower and also when u compared the mildliner to the sharpies’ u prob made one have a longer dry time then the other! For example, I like using the pentel energel gel pen with mildliner bc they dry super quickly so u can highlight it after a few seconds! But great video in general :D (omlg I’m so sorry for the long comment)

    • @studyfluff
      @studyfluff  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      FunWithSelina totally agree with you! some pens are just naturally more prone to smear than others and all depends on how much pressure you apply on the highlighters too

    @Theresamonet 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Sharpie is not generic. It is a well-known name brand. Very ubiquitous for highlighters and markers, at least here in the states. It's not surprising that they performed well. People love mildliners because of the colors. The pastels look cute in a planner or bujo.

    In poland they are hella expensive, I want them because everyone else has them, and people say that they are amazing in Asia...like they’re just so aesthetic and my mom doesn’t understand haha...and it’s just so upsetting to see the people that have them, that actually can get them/afford them. I think pastel highlighters are way too mainstream now. Literally all stationery brands have their own pastel highlighters: Stabilo, Staedtler, Pilot (Frixion), Kokuyo (mark+ and uni propus), Pentel (Fitline), and others. The market is way too oversaturated now. I wish Zebra mildliners can come up with new colors other than pastel. Maybe, vintage/ retro series to compliment their zebra sarasa vintage, which is widely popular. I'd love to have that in my collection.

    I have the 15-pack that they sell pretty much everywhere and the fluorescent pack, and I love them! I'm honestly thinking of getting the colors I don't have yet to complete my collection. Even the fluorescent pack has some really pretty colors in it that you don't typically find with generic highlighters... Honesty, my main reason for buying these was because of the colors. I plan to use these for my bullet journal, so I wanted to have a wide variety of colors that I could use in my bullet journal. The colors can also be amazing for sprucing up your notes! I also have to say, I love the look of the highlighters themselves and I love that they have two different tips. There are a lot of good things to say about Zebra Mildliners.
    However, Mildliners ARE a bit pricey, and so are Stabilo's pastel highlighters (at least at my craft store)... The colors DO make them worth it though. I would be terrified to take them to school though if I were still in school, haha... and they'd stay home so I can be sure they don't get lost or stolen.

    I got the pastel pack to use for highlighting because I don't like the normal intense fluoro ones - they're called MILD-liners for a reason! Yes they cost a little more but the tips don't go squishy and they are double-ended. Worth the extra IMHO

    I’ve read somewhere that neon coloured (specifically yellow) highlighters tend to help you memorise or keep in mind of the things you wrote or read. Also a law student said she easily remembers things she needs to remember with a yellow highlighter. This is just for studying tho, you can use pastel for arts and crafts cuz they’re so pretty and is not an eyesore tbh

    It depends on the purposes. Mildliners are more on the decorative aspects since the trends of aesthetic planner, bujo and notes.
    For practical use and economic choices, I use Staedler textsurfer highlighters. These are about 20% less expensive than the Mildliners in Vietnam. I use gel and fountain pens and Textsurfer highlighters are the only highlighters in my place that work well enough with gel and fountain. pen inks. The classic inkjet safe Staedler don smear even fountain pen inks at all. The new pastel Colors series of the Textsurfer smear gel and fountain pens only a bit. And they don't bleed at all even on low quality paper.

    And I though Sharpie highlighters were bad! I won't but Zebra then. They seem worse. A lot of brands that sell highlighters in many different colors have problems with bleeding through paper and getting that grainy effect that I don't like.

    I have highlighters in every colour from pastel to unusual colours like brown and grey and even glitter and metallic ones. The only thing I don't have? A single mildliner. It's about the aesthetics and wanting what everyone has rather than anything else, imo.

    5:19 that’s because of the paper you used and the paper quality, not the highlighter itself

    I know this review is old… but you didn’t even mention that Sharpie is alcohol-based, Mildliner is water based… hence the smear test results was skewed… gel pen doesn’t like water….
