I think the biggest thing that stumped Julian Newman's development as a true PG that could play at the collegiate level was his father. Taking him out of a normal high school, making an entire school dedicated to just give Julian a platform for national attention, and also being his coach. I believe if Julian Newman played for a different head coach in his last couple of years playing Varsity HS basketball he would've learned and adapted to be a real PG, not the abomination his father yelled at him to be on the court.
@@BennyTherat I've seen just about every Julian Newman lowlights video ever made on TH-cam, every time he had a lowlight he could beat majority of defenders off the dribble but would choose to try to finish in the paint 1 on 3 or take a stutpid contested shot from deep, almost every lowlight play could've been a highlight play if he chose to pass the ball to a wide-open teammate since he always drew so much attention attacking. Julian had the speed to overcome the lack of size, but his fixation on scoring over playmaking for others is what turned all those potential highlights into lowlights. Also, he had the speed to blow past most defenders but had a fixation on chasing highlights and too much fancy dribbling. THAT is a product of coaching, or lack there of. A good coach would've hammered the mentality to take what the defense gives, make more plays for others, focus on using dribble combinations of no more than 3 dribbles to get past defenders, and opening up Julian's mind to mid-range stepbacks vs. deep-range stepbacks that he didn't have the upper & lower body strength to pull off. These simple tweaks to Julian's game easily would've made him a highly sought after player that D-3 and D-2 colleges, and maybe a handful of D-1 schools would've wanted in their programs.
Exactly just to set him up with the same issue which is mainly their height. Just got to be realistic, but the upside is they definitely made bank off him and his families popularity, so they got something out of it at least. There are worst situations in life to be in.
Which is even worse in his lack of success. Reminds me of the Ball bros but at least 2 of the 3 are serious NBA players. This kid got the BBB treatment with none of the success
He had a lot going against him. His dad made every team he coached about Julian. That kind of nepotism created Julian’s ego, which made coaches believe he’s uncoachable. His game really didn’t evolve past trying to be a highlight reel. And unfortunately his height didn’t help either. His dad stunted his growth.

He started out WAY ahead of most other kids his age bc of his work ethic, then his lack of physical tools caught up to him. He has always been special and the best growing up and when he got up to the elite level, where he always thought he belonged, he found out he didn’t. He got smacked in the face by reality and he’s resentful. That’s why he lashes out. He’s ashamed he never met expectations and that will follow him for a long time. It’s heartbreaking.
I doubt he was even ahead of other kids at 11. If he met Bronny James, Bronny probably would've eaten him alive at that age. The competition he played was that bad that allowed an 11 year old kid to start playing at the varsity level. If he can't beat top level high school competition after hitting puberty, he wasn't going to beat them at 11. Even genetic freaks like LeBron James or Wilt would've struggled at 11 playing against the top high schools.

Newman doesn't have the talent, he's genetically limited. He might be taller than Muggsy Bogues, but nowhere near the athletic freak, and even then Bogues was exploited on defense.

I have 2 kids, 3 and 4. I come from an athletic family. Me and siblings ALL got burned out by dad. Practices turning into punishment/conditioning. I don’t hate sports I still enjoy watching them, but I’ll never try to live out my dreams through my kids. I’m going to ask them, pick one thing you want to be good at and I’ll support you all the way.
Just don't be an ass to your kids, I think the documentary is called Trophy Kids... it's crazy what some parents do. I will give my kid a lot of support and hope he plays ball, and not sit on an iPad all day playing minecraft like his cousins.
I may even become a coach, maybe his friends will need someone to help them out as well. I know I didn't have my dad around that often due to divorce, you know?

There have been plenty of times that people have known that will happen. It's usually when a kid is 11, 12 , or 13 and over 6'5" with the possibility of still growing. All the "media attention" is bought by his dad, you can pay for publicity and then have it snowball over time for more media opportunities. See how he never went on actual sports shows.

The downside of trying to engineer Fame & Fortune over creating a well rounded human being. I'm the dad of highly recruited offensive tackle. He started as a freshman at Oregon. The whole time we made sure he was humble and grateful for the opportunity. He went undrafted and is happily working in construction. He looks back at his high school and college career fondly and positively!

ey man im 5’7 and played for 10 years basketball and I regret it because i knew deep down I was not going to be tall (the tallest person in my family is 5’10 ). There are kids that are tall and can do stuff with no effort I played point guard and I had better handles shooting and iq in the court than others but sometimes you have to accept reality and that it was never meant for me to be a basketball player.
It’s not really the fact that u were never meant to be a basketball player it’s just that being taller and longer makes everything so much easier so you would have to train harder and be much better compared to ur peers who might not even put in half the work but still be better. It really depends on how far you want to take basketball and accepting the fact things are always going to be harder for you compared to a taller person.
He had potential, not for the NBA of course but if he had developed his game better he would now be playing for some team and not almost retired like now. His problem was that he never had a real coach (not his father) to show him the true path and guide him. He was always more focused on seeking personal highlights rather than teamwork, in addition to not managing the ego of being the star of social media.

I think if he had a real coach who taught him how to actually play the team game and use his ball handling skills to create space or facilitate plays... he could've worked out in some league some where in the world beyond educational institutions. The fact is that he played inferior players just to hype him up, and whenever faced real competition he wouldn't go off because he does not have the skills. As someone who played rugby in school (where size is a huge factor) this concept of thinking little kids will have careers as athletes just because they show early capability at a sport is just a sad delusion. Around 12-13 I was relatively big for my peers - I managed to get selected for the provincial team, and I believed i would be able to go pro. Fast forward 5 years, and I didn’t even make the cut for my schools C-team. Sports can be a crushing dream. Edit: I’d just like the clarify that I am not saying that smaller athletes can’t make it big. I know thousands of stories of guys that were counted out because of the size, only to silence their critics. HOWEVER, if you are physically disadvantaged you have to compensate by being really exceptional in other areas. And even then, physicality can trump all of it. Think of lebron vs kyrie. No one would disagree that lebron is the better player. But no one would say that lebron is faster, more agile, more skilled, or a better shooter than Kyrie. Heck Kyrie is the best i nso many categories. But the size difference creates such a huge advantage that despite being better in many important categories, Kyrie is still not the better player.
Well said!! There are so many examples of polar opposites to this kid that didn't play basketball until junior or senior years in high school and that reached the NBA! I can see this young man is short and this demands he be a lock down defender and incredible point guard with record assists. Instead he's just a small, slow ball hog. I blame the father 100%!!

Was never sold on the hype. He never changed his shooting style since a little kid. Kids shoot from the chest, as you get older that shooting style is supposed to change.
His moves were quick but like the narrator said, no separation. So once people played actual defense against him; he didn't really have any counters or pump fakes. Example given: no spin move. His game was sped up, but the actual moves basic and one dimensional. Had no crossover. Peace

He's an insanely short point guard. He could've made it on a small D1 roster if he would've built his game around ball handling, defense, and racking up assists. Scoring should've been his last priority as a point guard. His dad did a great job developing his skills as a young kid, but should've stopped coaching him after middle school. He needed someone to teach him how to be a team player, humble him, and not constantly be the center of attention.

I recorded Julian in high school for overtime sports, he was absolutely terrible. Ball hog, throwing up every shot over larger defenders, turning the ball over when he did attempt to pass, poor body language and always trying to get foul calls when there was no legitimate contact.
The craziest thing to me is that his father never gave julian gh while he was growing up. Its obvious hes his father's experiment. Dude didnt even try to make him taller. He couldve had his son do soccer,track,tennis,etc.
His dad made some very good decisions for Julian's career. Hyping the kid as a prodigy and getting a TV show has made Julian a millionaire despite always being an very extreme long shot to play in the NBA because of his size. There are currently 2 guys shorter than 6 foot in the NBA and both are taller than Julian. Job well done IMO. Which non NBA prospects have made as much money as Julian Newman? He's likely the GOAT in terms of turning limited basketball upside into dollars.

I think sometimes these people get labeled as prodigies way too soon. Julian had one of the biggest upsides ever, but it was dependent on him getting taller, being more efficient with his dribbles, not being the main option always. His ego depleted some of those aspects and his physical nature just didn’t get there.
He played 3x more as a varsity than many others. Some of the records still better than his, were done in 2-3 years. Not 7. His PER is shit. To put it simple. Give someone 30 shots at a 3. And then give Julian Newman 100 shots. And see who makes the most. Yeah, he has “records”. Na. He just played way more games than anyone else. And it’s not even close.

The thing about kyrie is that he can change the pace of his dribble/drive which can make him unpredictable. Julian is too readable, he dribbles too fast without going anywhere, then shoots a questionable three or takes a smoothered layup. He's not a space creator nor is he a playmaker.
I am seeing this same scenario play out in front of me on a smaller scale. A kid miles ahead of others at a young age. Dad starts a team to try to create a better environment for his son, the team becomes an academy. Dad talks about college ball before the kid starts middle school. At first the Dad's team is helpful, then it becomes a crutch when other kids catch up in skills and exceed in height. The Dad's team focuses on the kid, he learns to be selfish and only play one way. The other teams start benching the kid, the family makes a ton of reasons other than the obvious, (he has been eclipsed), so he only plays for the Dad's team. Growth stunted, dream dead. BTW, to all short parents, your kids will not be tall, so a career in basketball is not for them - try soccer (the greatest players that ever lived were not tall).
I've been using my wife's face soap to wash my ass for months. I swear to god this was an accident. My wife bought a bar of soap that looked somewhat nice about a year ago. It stayed in our shower for months and never seemed to be getting smaller. About 6 months ago my soap bar ran out and I decided to use her fancy bar. It never seemed to get smaller so I figured it was just there a show soap or something. To be looked at but never touched. I decided that that bar of soap was now my ball sack and ass cleaner. For months I used this poor bar to clean the sweat and grime off my unspeakables. I was happy. But it all came crashing down today. I was brushing my teeth and I saw that same soap bar being lathered all over my wife's face. I felt like vomiting but had to hide it fast. I gave her a lame thumbs up and smiled. She probably thought I was a dumbass. Anyways I will take this to my grave because my wife would murder me if she ever found out. Hopefully it stays that way.

He isn't good enough for the NCAA, let alone the NBA. He probably wouldn't even make it in foreign leagues because he doesn't have fundamentals, has bad genetics for the sport, and doesn't seem to be coachable as he is now. Sucks that he was set up to fail so badly.

ey man im 5’7 and played for 10 years basketball and I regret it because i knew deep down I was not going to be tall (the tallest person in my family is 5’10 ). There are kids that are tall and can do stuff with no effort I played point guard and I had better handles shooting and iq in the court than others but sometimes you have to accept reality and that it was never meant for me to be a basketball player.
It’s not really the fact that u were never meant to be a basketball player it’s just that being taller and longer makes everything so much easier so you would have to train harder and be much better compared to ur peers who might not even put in half the work but still be better. It really depends on how far you want to take basketball and accepting the fact things are always going to be harder for you compared to a taller person.

As someone who played rugby in school (where size is a huge factor) this concept of thinking little kids will have careers as athletes just because they show early capability at a sport is just a sad delusion. Around 12-13 I was relatively big for my peers - I managed to get selected for the provincial team, and I believed i would be able to go pro. Fast forward 5 years, and I didn’t even make the cut for my schools C-team. Sports can be a crushing dream.

HOWEVER, if you are physically disadvantaged you have to compensate by being really exceptional in other areas. And even then, physicality can trump all of it.
Think of lebron vs kyrie. No one would disagree that lebron is the better player. But no one would say that lebron is faster, more agile, more skilled, or a better shooter than Kyrie. He's an insanely short point guard. He could've made it on a small D1 roster if he would've built his game around ball handling, defense, and racking up assists. Scoring should've been his last priority as a point guard. His dad did a great job developing his skills as a young kid, but should've stopped coaching him after middle school. He needed someone to teach him how to be a team player, humble him, and not constantly be the center of attention.

I recorded Julian in high school for overtime sports, he was absolutely terrible. Ball hog, throwing up every shot over larger defenders, turning the ball over when he did attempt to pass, poor body language and always trying to get foul calls when there was no legitimate contact.

His dad made some very good decisions for Julian's career. Hyping the kid as a prodigy and getting a TV show has made Julian a millionaire despite always being an very extreme long shot to play in the NBA because of his size. There are currently 2 guys shorter than 6 foot in the NBA and both are taller than Julian.

I think sometimes these people get labeled as prodigies way too soon. Julian had one of the biggest upsides ever, but it was dependent on him getting taller, being more efficient with his dribbles, not being the main option always. His ego depleted some of those aspects and his physical nature just didn’t get there.

I am seeing this same scenario play out in front of me on a smaller scale. A kid miles ahead of others at a young age. Dad starts a team to try to create a better environment for his son, the team becomes an academy. Dad talks about college ball before the kid starts middle school. At first the Dad's team is helpful, then it becomes a crutch when other kids catch up in skills and exceed in height. The Dad's team focuses on the kid, he learns to be selfish and only play one way. The other teams start benching the kid, the family makes a ton of reasons other than the obvious, (he has been eclipsed), so he only plays for the Dad's team. Growth stunted, dream dead.
BTW, to all short parents, your kids will not be tall, so a career in basketball is not for them - try soccer (the greatest players that ever lived were not tall).
I've been using my wife's face soap to wash my ass for months. I swear to god this was an accident. My wife bought a bar of soap that looked somewhat nice about a year ago. It stayed in our shower for months and never seemed to be getting smaller.

@@eddiew2325 of course height is a major factor, I am not saying Wemby didn't practice and work hard but height helps a lot. There's a reason the NBA isn't populated with a lot of shorter people. Height gives you a major advantage.
