I watch a lot of random TH-cam videos where the host gives a good yarn. Not everything has to be scripted. Thanks for sharing your story.

Marty just go to the fruit shop pickup some scraps to add on your feeding cycle, give them some grain if you like.

Get a couple of old wood planks or boards and put them on the grass. After a while they will generate free chook food underneath.

Good morning Marty and fam. My tip for cheap chook feed is cook a pot of beans well, i just boil them for around an hour or two until they get very soft, then i put in a couple of cups of rice. This lasts me a few days. Don't give chickens raw beans they are toxic to chooks.
I had a rooster funeral this morning, i think he must of got wacked with a tent pole in the storm yesterday. He wasn't well when i got home, i knew something was up. He was having a dirt nap on the floor of the coop this morning. He was my friendliest rooster.
    RIP. Aussie the Australorp.
I loved the surf story including all about chickens. In 2001 in Bali i was lucky enough to go to a proper little village cock fight, it was amazing. Way better than the tourist cock fighting in Kuta. My two young rooster brothers love to spar up every now and then, its so cool to watch them jump around at each other with all their hackles up. Their names are Greystone Gold dust & Tails. Tails mum pecked his bum the day he hatched out and now he has a funny messed up tail.
Have a great day and Happy gardening, 💚🎄🙏

I really love AZOLLA even down south it grows well just needs a shady place about 50% sun. Black soldier fly or BSF is also a go. For you guys up north these two would make you 90% sufficient in feed.

Getting Pellet machine is a big time money saver...also works great for making fertilizer pellets

We found out the expensive way years ago that special breed chooks like isa browns, hylines etc require high value and specific types of feed. Hylines have been the worst for me. Would love some heirloom types that can breed like Australorp, sussex etc. I'm trying sprouting grains at the moment, rice, beans, corn, barley. Taking ages to sprout. It was a lot faster in the videos I watched!! Funny critters won't eat the pellets or wheat. Since when do chooks not eat wheat?? Over winter with all the rain, the wheat that the chickens had spread all over the pen but refused to eat, sprouted. They ate the wheat grass instead!! At least they got greens.

    Like your chicken tale,
    non-fiction of course.
Makes sense. I never thought about it before. We wanted to attract wild birds to our garden and were feeding them. We stopped feeding the wild bird this year. They still visit our garden. We still sprinkle cleaned crushed eggshell near plants to discourage insect eggs, snails and slugs. Light sprinkle worked into soil.

I like the idea of breeding black soldier flies. My neighbour half ass tried it. Just putting dead fish on the ground. We had swarms of house flies and the smell. We had to ask her to move the dead fish. I've heard a good compost heap is good as well build dig through it for the grubs. Cheers Graham

I’ve been breeding black soldier fly larvae in the past and now just when I need to. It’s great for chooks and the wild birds like them (very high protein). Good way to use up spent meat products. No smell at all and the larvae are funnelled in to a container for easy collection. Pick up waste on the cheap from the butcher or fishmonger or from your own fishing. The series Gardening Australia did an excellent piece on raising them and had this guy show you how to construct a container to breed them … should be able to Google it…

Yes, you can buy them at the market very cheap. The ones I have eaten don't seem to have the deep yellow colour that I lie though. Maybe one day we will have a farm there with chooks, fish and other animals
