@@MingusDew_Bebop So you are claiming that you can only search facts on Google? That alligns well with all my experiences to. I suspect you arent making the point you think you are making.
@ShephardsatanI think you should actually go and find one of those "how Google ruined internet search" videos, because your opinion here doesn't stand up to the actual experience using the product. Websites have evolved over the past decade to cater to Google's algorithm, and as a result, the *actual* content available out there is far less information-dense. Also, Google is serving so much of their promoted content at the top of search results that it can be very difficult to distinguish where real information starts and ads end. This isn't anecdotal or subjective. Search results are becoming FAR less useful because of Google's monopoly, and it extends beyond just their products. If the content itself isn't organic, it doesn't matter which search engine is indexing it. If they're all trying to "be" Google, there are no real alternatives and building your own is cost prohibitive. Your position doesn't really stand up to basic scrutiny here.
idk, I think it's worth considering that (at least at this point in time) the positive impact of increased awareness overwhelms the downside of the "feel righteous, do nothing" effect. (I say that because it's painfully obvious that this country is nowhere near politically educated)
@idontwantahandlethough Maybe, though the 'ha ha look at them, aren't they stupid ' that is so prevalent has proven dangerous. I hope ppl will be more thoughtful about this stuff. Hearing every excuse from ppl to do nothing and think only of themselves

@@dayoft6helords Agree. Satire is nonviolent expression of checks and balances, but only if a populace is capable of critical thinking, and the leadership has a healthy fear of them. Right now we have neither.
As a general rule I automatically thumbs up any Harland video that Spinks its way into my algorithm feed before I watch it. Even if I don't finish it for whatever reason. I've yet to regret this practice.
On the topic of satire: I was pretty disappointed when a judged rejected The Onion's sale of Infowars. But at least they're still trying to buy it! That would be a massive win for satire. The Instagram account you mentioned sounds hilarious and I wish I knew about it before they deactived their account. Out of all the different subjects that I've seen satirized, wealth always seems to go over people's heads the most. Or maybe it really is just the satire in general?
It was stopped for obvious legal reasons. A bankruptcy trustee has the obligation to get the best possible deal. This is to the benefit of debtor and creditor alike. The debtor wants to reduce their debt as much as possible and the creditor wants to recoup as much as possible. The judge was in the right. Also: "Trustees have a fiduciary responsibility to the trust's beneficiary or beneficiaries. This means a trustee must act in the best interests of the beneficiaries to manage their assets."
That little beep at the beginning of the ad read makes a big difference to other youtubers with sponsors. Many youtube channels often get me onto their train of thought only to waste my time, it feels like you actually finished your train of thought before starting the ad instead of enmeshing it in. I always go straight to the ad-read just to gauge if it's worth watching, if my engagement gets respected. Great job.
Thanks for pointing that out, sometimes I feel like the only one that finds “clever transitions” into ad-reads to be just irritating time wasters that trick you for a second while you’re still engaged with the actual content.
We live in an era where reality has become so ridiculous, education so bad, and online content so overwhelming... people are just literally getting BRAIN ROT, and thus losing that discernment and ability to detect satire, nuance, allegory in media. I've noticed there seems to be a great deal of videos that need to literally (as in, spell-out) movie plots beat by beat because apparently now nobody can watch and follow a movie unless EVERYTHING is spelled out. The thing that makes those CONSERVATIVE "spoofs" unfunny is that 1) they have no basis in recognizable reality, and 2) they usually punch down at people who are already oppressed, struggling, exploited, or otherwise sensitive thus it just feels MEAN and not funny....
A lot of this is about the ongoing expansion of access to online resources, and thus, more bulk volume of information and media. Even just 15-years ago, if you saw some quirky online video, then you were either a nerd, or else had it sent to you via some nerd you know. Today, my parents are as likely as I am to stumble over some fringe media or conspiracy theories. When paired with the cynical interests who would seek to exploit their limited media literacy and/or critical thinking skills, along with systems of government that rely on little more than good-faith adherence to traditional conventions, you end up with a world filled with people who have been grossly manipulated and misinformed, and who are no longer equipped to deal with this new reality that’s so rapidly coalesced.
In my understanding the example of the rich couple can't be satire. Even if it was intended as such. Because at some point they are just doing the thing you're trying to criticise. In this example I think as long as they are really buying the things it can't be satire
Brilliant. So many good points here. My favorite takeaway is about bad faith creators. The "Your Favorite Band Sucks" podcast is such a good example of this. The title alone is a dead giveaway that it's satire, but the actual episodes aren't crafted to do anything more than punch down at the fanbase of popular bands. Meanwhile, they're taking on bands that have huge devoted fanbases, none of which will ever be effected by this tiny podcast on TH-cam. They even engage with the hate comments more than most creators to enhance, and even blatantly expose the satire... and yet I have sympathy for an audience that wants to treat the podcast in good faith and is bombarded with mistruths and hyperbole. Sure the emotional response will boost their chances with the algorithm, but what are they actually contributing to the culture when the lowest common denominator won't get the joke?
Starship Troopers the book was a condemnation of fascism and militarism. He fought in WWII and hated the whole idea. I really wish people would realize that Heinlein wasn't advocating what he wrote about.
Agreed, the book has some layers that aren’t obvious and being like “oh that’s in-book propaganda” was a fascinating reading experience. Sadly I think the book will be further hated as nuance is forgotten

The guy who pretended to be trans was NOT satire for sure. Also, I dont think he thought about the implications of it all and neither do most people. That person was literally walking around and existing while saying to themselves "WOW THIS IS NOT ME GENUINELY" everywhere they went. Its weird because his characterization of how stupid and dumb woke left culture is was because he watched it respond to a fake representation of himself. Meaning, he experienced what it must feel like internally pre external transition for trans people. I bet it was insufferable internally. And he won't ever make this connection .
When it comes to Colbert's right-wing pundant character, the best way to tell that there was a joke being told with the character is that the show was on Comedy Central, and would be the lead-in for stuff like puppets making prank calls (crank yankers), the most incompetent cops ever (Reno 9-1-1), and reruns of Scrubs

I think my favorite example of Babylon Bee not understanding satire is their article about how “AOC doesn’t know how to tie her shoes.” The article just keeps saying she’s dumb and can’t tie her shoes, but if it was satire it should be saying the opposite of what is true, so this would only make sense if they thought AOC was smart. The last pop-culture thing that confused me as to whether it was satire or not was the "Woman's World" music video by Katy Perry. I knew that, like, ten years ago she had some sort of come to Jesus moment, and became an insufferable "I'm with her", feminist, mass market millionaire; and that no one cared. Since I don't follow her, I assumed in the intervening years, she did a political about-face, and went full on into the MAGA grift, in the hope of finding her lost popularity with them. Subsequently, I found out that wasn't the case, but while I assumed otherwise, I think that music video is the best rightwing parody of pink-washing, liberal pandering ever made. Unfortunately, Kary Perry seems to have meant it seriously.
Yea.... did not expect to see her fueling up her behind. It has to be parody because nobody could honestly think that was "empowering" or whatever... right?
I watch The Vongino Predicament and The Joke Explainer(The Bachelors of Music) and I love the creators, I was never confused about the nature of it but have seen people comment about being unsure. Hey Harland, great video as alway. I just want to recommend a movie for maybe a new video on horror movies as I respect and adore your content but to hear your perspective on this topic would be appreciated from my point of view. Anywho the movie is called “the void”. A personal favorite and I truly enjoy your perspective on topics and a “horror” episode would be a joy! If anything keep Harland, Harland! -a fan
22:59 this is simply a description of the phenomenon that spurred the "law" -- properly stated, it's that regardless of how extreme/overt a piece of satire is, there are _some_ members of the audience who will take it as genuine.
22?-ish years ago, for an intro to business class assignment, a fellow student literally, genuinely, cited The Onion. In front of everyone. At least it wasn't as well known back then, so maybe she didn't know. Nobody said anything. I sure didn't either, and sat there thinking - does nobody else realize she's talking about a satire cite? or do they know of it but also don't realize it's satire? or are they just like me and they know what's what but too awkward to bust this lady's bubble? - Anyway, in today's bot heavy world, I'm more frustrated by the people who say "I can't believe these people believe this shit!" because what the hell makes you think those people are people and if they are, that they are being genuine when they say they believe it or they didn't really pay that much attention in the first place? Like that enron response lady, she's obviously been waiting 20 years to be able to talk about that again, she didn't have time to think too much lol
Verhoeven can't call Starship Troopers "satire" when the fascist Teran Federation is a literal utopia outside of the war. He misunderstands Starship Troopers glorification of "service for the society" (which in the book is explicitly stated to include but is not limited to military service) as fascism which is bad. Rico is also Filipino in the book, Verhoeven chose to make him the Aryan ideal.
South Park comes to mind. Their satire has been misinterpreted probably more than a few times. The ginger episode leading to more ginger discrimination. That kind of thing. Not to mention Cartman is actually the character that displays all of Trump's foibles. Instead of being interpreted as the loathsome person he is, he's treated like a anti-hero who has a point by some. Trump is Cartman down to the fast food consumption, crybully nature, bigotry, and the simpering hoarse whiny voice.
there are so many channels that flaunt their excessive and ridiculous spending. you even saw stuff like that on cable TV shows years ago. on some food show they showed a lady buy a $1,000 ice cream. and that was like 15 years ago so that thousand dollars would be worth a lot more today. it's pretty hard to tell that these dudes are doing satire because it just seems exactly like all the other super obnoxious wealth flaunting channels on various social media. hard to satirize something that is already ludicrous.
Remember the the biting satire of german cabaret defeated the nazis? You actually have to do things. Also, irony poisoning has absolutely destroyed people's brains the last 30+ years.
Interesting. For a person in the gay community since the 1980s, the two fancy guys look familiar. Over the years, I personally witnessed the source behavior many times. I do believe this ‘type’ is less common these days, but still relevant enough to make fun of. If this couple are not being sarcastic, then good for them. If such people don’t exist, or better yet, nobody acts this way to feel superior, then my community is more mundane than ever. I’ll try to not get frustrated with people not understanding satire, not being in on the joke. Its impossible to know everything about every culture. Some of the best material is directed at niche subsets within a large subculture. It does suck when someone takes excessive offense to joking; it doubly sucks when offense comes from outside the group, more so when it appears insincere. I enjoy your videos, as you bring to light the many wretched people needing to be called out. Satire is a tricky subject to analyze of course. Only ten minutes into the video, but I’m sure you’d agree that not understanding satire could be a good thing. If everyone is in on the joke, then I’m going back to bed. Society has reached the pinnacle of blandness, an endpoint I for one hope never to see.
In addition, fake satire can be at least lame, at worst dangerous. Over analyzed also sucks. Mid season comedy from Family Guy is rightly panned by many for similar low effort material, whether as a quick joke or intending to be a critique. Also, Colbert’s contemporaneous work (Harvey Birdman, for one), points toward his right-wing persona being satire. He’s talented enough to fool a great deal of the population, which makes it more comedic.
Wait a sec I watched these people on TikTok I fucking loved watching these rich gay men and their Hermes bags and unreasonable spending for an ornament
When babylon bee started, it was legit funny and poked fun at a lot of the glaring issues with the evangelical Christian church. They sold and it immediately because a trump fest over there lol
I stumbled upon a “satirical” conservative housewife account. In 90% of her videos she’s simply spewing horrible opinions about women and how we deserve to be treated by our dominant male husbands. She even goes so far as to actually argue with women in the comment section and being VERY rude and provoking them as much as possible. Since I’ve seen a lot of crazy tradwife content this isn’t something that comes off as obviously satirical in any way. There are sooo many people with these opinions and lifestyles already so where is the punchline? Then I see some people in the comment section all smug like “haha so funny to see how many dont understand this is satire”. Like HOW is it satire? I admit maybe a couple videos were so over the top that even I understood she wasn’t serious - but why does she continue to be in character in the comment section, getting worried women all worked up because they are concerned about the message she’s sending? It seems like some people hide behind the facade of “making satirical content” when really it’s just RAGE BAIT and they know it gets them the most views and money.
You're misunderstanding something. People are deeply distressed, confused, and uncertain. We want to express that. So it's not that we don't "get satire", its that satire offers us the opportunity to express our distress, and this opportunity for many people is far more valuable and has more utility than the point the satirist is trying to make. So "is it real?" is actually a culture jam, a hijacking of the satire itself, rather than a straightforward expression of questioning the author's intent. There is, on the other hand, the actual issue of questioning the author's intent. So Paul Verhoeven is a "anti-fascist leftist" perhaps, but he's also an A-list Hollywood director benefiting from imperialism, sexism, racism, etc and happily takes Big Studio money with everything that implies. There's the issue of what Paul Verhoeven *intends* versus what Paul Verhoeven *is* . This is why people are confused by Paul Verhoeven - he's not exactly an oppressed starving waife whose position against the powers that be is crystal clear.
What you said at the end about judging Boomers too harshly because your generation is just as easily confused and misled... oof. I love real people talking about real things. I am sooo glad I didn't have to hear an AI host. Thank you for all your hard work.
No, thank YOU for making these videos!
The Micky laugh was chefs-kiss.
Your intros are always my fav
28:39 This video really made me think about my own consumption and analysis because i saw part of this Tiktok and thought he was geniune and didnt watch the rest of the tiktok because i couldnt tolerate it. But after hearing the rest of the tiktok, i would have atleast suspected satire.
I'm terrified by the reading age of Americans, watched the enron videos, within seconds understood what they were trying to say... But honestly when can I buy my home egg
He says, "Like, comment, and subscribe," differently each video? OH MY GAWD IS THIS REAL?!
To be fair I’d sign up to fight space bugs even if there wasn’t a girl involved
I've been saying satire is dead for almost a decade. It makes me deeply sad.
Not on topic but I love the intros in these videos 👌
Nothing makes me AS MAD as stupid people, and it's angered me since the beginning of this platform.
You think satire is ruined?
Well, the internet has yet to feel the full force of my bitter sarcastic satire. Im holding back for now...
Rainn Wilson's right, satire is completely gone online now
Brain Wilson
I've shit my pants. Again. With passion. With power. With pride. No regrets. Semper fi!
-a fan
As a kid I believed the Infinite Solutions videos... my god... I wish I didn't have to admit that.
The problem with satire is that it's too political.
👆 Satire
22:59 this is simply a description of the phenomenon that spurred the "law" -- properly stated, it's that regardless of how extreme/overt a piece of satire is, there are _some_ members of the audience who will take it as genuine.
Satire requires intelligence to understand. See the problem with expecting current America to get it?
If I wasn't in america I would be diagnosed as stupid
Great vid, love your set!
Great video, as usual ❤ thank you, I laughed a lot
it's satire until it becomes...the only thing you post...then it's just the thing you do
you're wrong about music at the end ??
I’m shocked you didn’t mention Dan Hentschel! Great work tho
That enron thing was on point I believed it...shit he dropped real money on the trademark that's commitment to the bit that's Andy Kaufman level
You look almost exactly like the tactical velcro opening guy.
Rico is also Filipino in the book, Verhoeven chose to make him the Aryan ideal.
the reason for the casting is just 90s Hollywood
Isn't star ship troopers historically accurate?
South Park comes to mind. Their satire has been misinterpreted probably more than a few times. The ginger episode leading to more ginger discrimination. That kind of thing.
Not to mention Cartman is actually the character that displays all of Trump's foibles. Instead of being interpreted as the loathsome person he is, he's treated like a anti-hero who has a point by some. Trump is Cartman down to the fast food consumption, crybully nature, bigotry, and the simpering hoarse whiny voice.
You read the Babylon Bee. Thank you for your service. God, it's Hellish, isn't it?
dude congrats on the sponser
there are so many channels that flaunt their excessive and ridiculous spending. you even saw stuff like that on cable TV shows years ago. on some food show they showed a lady buy a $1,000 ice cream. and that was like 15 years ago so that thousand dollars would be worth a lot more today. it's pretty hard to tell that these dudes are doing satire because it just seems exactly like all the other super obnoxious wealth flaunting channels on various social media. hard to satirize something that is already ludicrous.
Remember the the biting satire of german cabaret defeated the nazis? You actually have to do things.
Also, irony poisoning has absolutely destroyed people's brains the last 30+ years.
disappointed in no Dan Henschel mention
You said the truth at 33:06 - *Reality* ruined satire. I don't think the internet has much to do with it.
8:48 Oh you suck. I LOST THE GAME /j /lh
I came to this channel for the Dropout love. I stayed to watch sketchy Chris Pine wax about comedians I stopped liking in 2019
if satire blend with reality… are we the joke?
Another video and right after I quit my job? Yasss
Oh, shoot… Harland’s being SERIOUS! I was expecting humor.
😂😂😂❤Satire’s BEEN dead ever since Joe Rogan hit puberty.
Next week?
Fascists ruined both satire and the internet
Wait a sec I watched these people on TikTok I fucking loved watching these rich gay men and their Hermes bags and unreasonable spending for an ornament
Harland please upload more wonderful content. It's getting thick with the awfulness out here. Thank you.
When babylon bee started, it was legit funny and poked fun at a lot of the glaring issues with the evangelical Christian church. They sold and it immediately because a trump fest over there lol
lol, "Paul Wehrhoven"... It's actually "Paul Ver-hoof-en" but the F is pronounced softer. I think the dude is Belgian.
Wait.I don't get it.
Hey, Harland, how's school going?
The reason people ask questions they could "just Google" is because they want to have a conversation and human interaction.
Not really
What you said at the end about judging Boomers too harshly because your generation is just as easily confused and misled... oof. I'm 46, and so much of what I see labeled online as Boomer behavior is largely my fellow Gen Xers acting every bit as old man yells at cloud as my father was. We are so, so cooked. 😅
