Especially when I see them feeding there pup over themselves and then seeing this story made my heart break thinking of them homeless man who has to give up his only companion. Ughhh please don't get me wrong im happy Hero got a loving home. Just hope the previous owner was able to get help and good karma came his way for his selfless act of putting his dog first.

Hero’s “ pure goodness” is a testament to the person who lost the love of this wonderful pup in California. While with this person, Hero must have spent a good deal of his time , outside, on a mat . That is why he finds comfort on a mat and wishes to share this comfort with his new Mom. My heart breaks for Hero and the homeless person on the loss of their love but my heart sings for the loving and compassionate relationship Hero has with his perfect and peaceful loving home in Canada.

1 Kings 3:16-28 recounts that two mothers living in the same house, each the mother of an infant son, came to Solomon. One of the babies had been smothered, and each claimed the remaining boy as her own.
Calling for a sword, Solomon declared his judgment: the baby would be cut in two, each woman to receive half. One mother did not contest the ruling, declaring that if she could not have the baby then neither of them could, but the other begged Solomon, "Give the baby to her, just don't kill him!"
The king declared the second woman the true mother, as a mother would even give up her baby if that was necessary to save its life.

Depends, but giving the dog up just cause you're homeless isn't necessarily best. Dog needs three things and only cares about two. Love from it's master, and food. It also needs immunizations kept up to date. Hard to give away a dog you have no idea what's going to happen to it. The tough part being homeless with a dog is all on the dog owner, it's really difficult if it's just you and the dog.

This is similar to my Luna's story! She was also surrendered by her owner who had become homeless and had been living out of his car. He just knew it wasn't a good life for her and so he surrendered her to the shelter. I got her when she was 3 after she'd been at the shelter for a few weeks and she was very quiet and sad for the first few months. Even so, she was always sweet and you could tell how well trained and well loved she had been. Unlike Hero, she absolutely loves walks and while she gets excited to go for rides in the car, when she does, she picks her "spot" and is basically silent and unmoving for however long you are in the car. It's eerie how quiet she gets because at home she's very....communicative LOL. But in the car? You'll sometimes forget she's even there. I think that's something she learned to do when they were living out of a car because her personality just transforms during car rides - even like 8 hour ones when we go to visit family.
She's the best dog and I've been so lucky to have her for the last 7 years. Rescues are the BEST. I couldn't love her more if I tried! I also never knew much about her prior owner but I can't imagine how hard it must have been to give her up. I think about him from time to time and always hope he's in a better place now and has a home and other doggies to love because he was clearly a great dog Dad.

ETA two months later and I HATE the conversation that started below this reply. All people deserve shelter, deserve food, deserve safety - those are human rights, and in the wealthiest nation in the world where we throw BILLIONS of tons of fresh food and new products into landfill every day, they should not be denied to anyone or anything. I work with people on the streets and they are the BEST pet owners. Their dogs would have been homeless regardless, THEY ARE ALSO BORN ON THE STREETS AND NO ONE RESCUES THEM, but instead of being feral and afraid they have a family and someone to find nutritious food for them. In return, the dogs keep a watchful eye over their companions and whatever home they’re able to find. I hope none of you end up homeless, but if you do I hope you find yourself with life-saving companionship like Hero’s!

Hero is such an amazing dog and I'm so sorry that his former owner had to give him up for a life that was better than he could give him at that time. It must have been heart-wrenching for that owner, and Hero would have been the world to him. 6 years on though Hero is in such a nice home with a couple who adore him. Hearing the bath mat story made me cry - what an amazing thing for Hero to do for his owner when she was so upset after having a horrible day at work. Some animals are particularly in tune with their owners and are very empathetic and Hero clearly is such an animal. He's got a lovely life and his owners are lucky to have him. I hope his former owner has also had a good turnaround in their life and that they'll know that Hero is so well loved and so well taken care of. Thank you to his former owner for what he did for Hero, and thanks to Hero's current owners for everything they do for him.
