DREAM BIKE BUILD: THE CERVÉLO SOLOIST
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 9 ก.ค. 2023
- Sad news, this was the last bike build Nico did with us before he moved back to Italy. It was also the last one that we were able to do in The Service Course in Wilmslow which has now sadly closed down. Thank you again to everyone there for the help over the last few years. Amazing space and people that will be hugely missed..
Anyway the build, this is a Cervélo Soloist, the historic name in Cervélo's arsenal which has been lovingly resurrected in an all round race bike, perfectly suited to crits. It sort of sits between the R5 and S5. What do you think?! Let me know in the comments below!

Cervelo's are my dream bikes and this one is definitely dreamy. Normally I am not a fan of yellow or gold colors, but this is striking.
Yeah it’s a really lovely gold too
Love it - no torque wrench needed here!
Right on
Great to watch a craftsman at work, thats a great bike🚴♂️, enjoy 👍
Thanks, will do!
What a beautiful bike and Nico makes it look so easy. I know there made to ride but the first scratch on it is going to be a bummer. Another well done video. Take care, Al
Already scratched it 😅
Awesome video man. I’m hooked on this gold color. Appreciate your channel, keep it up!
Awesome! Thank you!
What a gorgeous looking bike .... Love the Gold .... Magical.
Me too!
that is one beautiful machine. would be a dream if I had a road bike, damn now I want a road bike
do it!
Wow Stunning 👌
Thank you! Cheers!
Gorgeous build !!
Thank you!
Really awesome build and bike!!!
It really is!
beautiful bike! love the colorway
Me too!
So 8.67 with pedals and bottle cages... very fine indeed. Great colour, nice build.
Thanks mate. Yeah it’s funny how so many are obsessed with the weight. I don’t actually think it’s bad at all, considering it’s with pedals, cages, a wrap on the frame, computer and also 34mm winter tyres which are a lot heavier than a 28 which is now on it
@@ChrisHallRides not very satisfied😩should be around 7.4-6 with for this price and soloist position, even my 2018 giant tcr with 50mm heigh wheel and 105 get around 8.1only
Love it - I did same R5 bar/stem upgrade. Went mix of Red/Rival components and Roval CLII wheels.
Also went gold bc it really pops. Plus Purdue colors (college in Indiana, US).
Gorgeous
Very nice! We should get gold chains!
@@ChrisHallRides Hell ya…I’m going gold if I can find a SRAM one
Huge question…how much can switching to the R5 bar/stem cost?
@@ChrisHallRides Hi Chris, great build! Can I ask what specific bar and stem it is? I believe the R5 now uses HB13 bars and ST31 stem, but I can't find the bars sold separately. Also, is it compatible with Cervelo? Thanks and be safe on the roads!
great video Chris.
Thanks 👍
Amazing bike and excellent conversion to the R5 cockpit (no cables showing). I did the same thing in black and swapped the wheels for Zipp 303 Firecrest!
Awesome! It looks so good fully integrated doesn’t it?
Yes it does! I understand the purpose of the external for traveling or disassembly, but doing neither I think the clean look is much better. Another added benefit is the aero bars give you more flat space to put your hands! Truth is, it wasn’t that much cost to make the swap either! Ride well and be safe!
Yeah, and you're no faster than before. LOL
It is so clean bike. Nice bike.
I think so too!
I built this bike with Enve wheels and bars and Ultegra 11-speed di2 disc and it was 8.0 kg with pedals. That seems pretty heavy. It's a great bike.
Was relieved to see him put at least a *little* effort into getting the tires on 😄
Hahaha
Nice Bike
Thanks ✌️
Thank you for the video Chris , Great to see a pro bike mechanic. I just replaced the chain on mine, Fingers bloody and oil all over my hands and face.... oh Chris are you looking for a new mechanic?🤣
😂😂
This build is a work of art, and the mechanic is Picasso.
🎨
LOL
chill. If there is an artist, think about the designer of the bike/frame
😍
I should have done this bar and stem combo instead of the much more labor intensive FSA/Vision setup I went with for cable integration!
I want this so bad
Amazing! I’m considering this and the Caledonia-5. The Soloist seems like more bang for the buck…
Yeah a great bike in terms of bang for buck like you say
Afternoon Chris, you're right, it's great! Striking colour and a fine spec too ( jealous again!). Best wishes to Nico & to Srrvice Course........I'm sorry to see them go......I think we have said in the past just how important a top bike mechanic and shop is for us cyclists.
Yeah it’s a real shame that they’re gone now. Struggling to find another mechanic like him to be honest!
@ChrisHallRides a bit of networking required in the locality Chris? I hope you do find a shop & mechanic that is right for you and your channel 👍
@@ChrisHallRides where are they moving to?
Such a nice build. Looks especially great with those purple Chris King's you recently put on!
Thank you! I agree!
What a beauty! How did you make it fully intergrated? What stem is it?
Thank you! It’s Cervélo’s own stem and top cap. It’s the system used on the R5.
Unpopular opinion : this bike deserves a blue Chris King Hub and and then it’ll match an Attacus x Zero Lemon kit
Blue would look fantastic
That’s another lovely bike Chris - how long did that build take out of interest?
Thank you! Nico did it in a few hours, not that long really
That is very very nice, bling but not too bling. As you have a few Cervelo's are they noticeably different in ride characteristics?
Yeah they all ride very differently but there’s something familiar about them which usually is with the power transfer
Lovely. I cannot find the R5 stem online to upgrade my soloist, any suggestions in Australia?
Have you reached out to your local Cervélo dealer? They should be able to help out pretty easily with it. Otherwise I've always heard good things from Bike Gallery and Wheelhaus
My ooh my my gravel e-bike is twice as heavy but the e-bike would be lighter if I removed the battery..ha ha😅
Where’s the bar tape from? Lovely build btw
Thank you! It’s from BBB: amzn.to/3KhrFtt
What bar tape is that? Whole build looks ideal 👍🏻
Thank you! It's from BBB
Would you recommend at 6ft with shorter arms to get a 56 or 58 or screw it and get a Caledonia-5? I ride a synapse now and could get slightly more racey but nothing crazy with my knees in my chest
Honestly the best thing to do would be to get a bike fit and discuss with them. For your reference I’m 6ft and ride a 54 but I prefer a smaller bike too
Hey Chris, what are the bottle cages on this one? Many thanks!
Arundel
Arundel
What bar tape do you use on this bike?
It’s from BBB, I think it’s called flex ribbon
Where did you get the Ride Wrap for this frame? Are you using the "Universal Fit" as they don't make the "Tailored Fit" for this frame.
They do make a tailored fit for this frame. That is what I have installed. It might be that they have not yet measured up your frameset size. I ride a 54. Best to get in contact with them directly
@@ChrisHallRides Okay, that must be it. I was gong to order the Universal but don't want to bother with cutting, etc. I ride a size 51.
Worth dropping Brandon there a message to check
Hello Chris. Just subscribed. I’m a big cervelo fan. I have an RS from 2009 that I had brand new. Still ride. Still immaculate. I’ve had a few R5s. Currently run the 2017 pre disk breaks. I gotta say 8.6 is pretty porky. It would have been on the chubby side 15 years ago. Just my opinion. Gonna go see your back catalogue of vids now 😉
Thanks for the sub! I don’t think it’s heavy to be honest. Definitely ways to make it lighter if I cared much about weight, running 34 tyres to start adds a surprisingly large amount of weight. I’ve now got 28s on it and a more racing tyre as opposed to a winter tyre (I put on a bigger tyre for comfort to help with my double broken wrists.) Also bear in mind that weight is with pedals, cages and a computer. Many people don’t actually weigh their bikes in that situation.
@@ChrisHallRides I missed the bit about the tires. That will make a difference for sure. I always weigh mine with cages and pedals but not computer. My r5 can only accommodate 25’s. I’m
Not really a weight weenie but with sram 202s and no exotic parts I got it down to 6.7 😎. Might have to look into a soloist. Seems like a great choice for an all rounder
Chris - my wife has a Canyon Ultimate SL rim brake 105 rim weighing 7.8kgs with bottle cages, pedals and mount. It costed 1600 euros and even now the SL frame is cheaper than rest. But discs add a surprisingly huge amount of weight. None of us have problems stopping with rim but I admit we don’t get so much rain as UK. I think discs will take another five years to come to rim brakes and till that time let’s wait and see. Cheers.
I think as an all rounder bike it’s a great shout and also as a more entry level bike in the Cervélo range it’s fantastic
I am a huge convert to disc brakes. In the UK I think it’s essential to be honest. Many steep rough descents and lots of rain. I don’t think I’d ever use rims and carbon wheels here again to be honest
Is the Service corse still open??
Sadly not!
What steam / handlebar its used on the bike?
Cervelo R5 stem, too cap and handlebar
Gorgeous bike! Tell us how it rides!?!?
I absolutely love it. I have done a few reviews of it in various vlogs. I used the bike for the World Champs Project which you can watch the whole playlist here: th-cam.com/video/kt_yW2qYYFM/w-d-xo.html
Stunning looking bike
Can I ask what stew and bar this is? Looks much cleaner than stock
It’s the stem, handlebar and top cap for the R5
Awesome mate, thanks for the quick response. Loving your content 💪🏻
Whats the bar tape brand? thank you.
It’s from BBB. This one here: amzn.to/3KhrFtt
@@ChrisHallRidesshhhhhh or they’ll run out of stock again 😂
🤣
What an incredible skill to have. I limit myself to oiling the chain, and inflating the tyres. Anything more complex than that, it goes to my local bike shop !
You should be doing yourself man go ahead and learn
@@DS-qc7pg I’ve tried. I have no technical skill and even less patience when it inevitably goes wrong!
what bar tape was that??
It's from BBB
What bar tape is that?
It’s from BBB: amzn.to/3KhrFtt
What size frame are we talking about here?
Size 54
What height are you Chris ?
I have the same bike no powermeter and im at 7.7kg 17lbs. Why is yours so heavy? I have the original cervelo bar and added the R5 stem with butyl tubes. Weird.
I have since weighed it. I think the scales may have been broken 😂
😂thank goodness.
It sure is a beauty..but. Wow, why is it so heavy? My Cube Litening in size XL weighs 8kg flat with pedals and cages, has deeper wheels and a deeper frame...
I dont think this bike is particularly heavy
Nice bike but weights a ton.
Made it lighter now.
8.7 kgs for an ultegra bike. Total brainwashing by the industry to push discs when a better performing bike can be had for much much less in rim brakes which can easily take 29mm tires
Shame it wouldn’t stop
@@ChrisHallRides yes for people who don’t know how to pull levers, you are right about that. Rest of us manage just perfectly fine.
Not sure why this one came out so heavy. I've got a Di2 Soloist and it weighs 8.4kg with pedals, cages, lights, Varia, Garmin, and spare pack w/ tube & Co2. Weighs closer to 7.3kg just bare bike. Very respectable for an aero road bike with disc brakes. If your legs can't push that, I'd find another hobby.
@@aloha_from_bradley why would one choose to push 8.4 when one can push much lighter? Totally illogical argument there. Disc it is for you.
@@TH-camfana Have fun bud.
disappointingly porky for no good reason
That’s not a very nice thing to say about someone.
