    1:14 - Don't need to start on the root note (Harmonic notes A minor - D or F)
    3:10 - Shift when chords hit to add rhythm
    6:10 - Minor to Major change or vice versa
    7:41 - Focus on the bottom notes of Chord Progression (bass notes)
    11:10 - Learn a new scale
    12:09 - Add a top note to create tension all the way through
    17:04 - Avoid the root note for until the end of a long Chord Progression (8 bars)
    21:02 - Utilize Sus 2 and Sus 4 chords (suspended chords - middle note 1 up for Sus4, middle 1 down for Sus2)
    24:49 - Utilize Inversions (A minor - move the top/middle note down/up 1 octave), useful for jumps to different chords
    28:16 - Seventh Chords (instead of 3 notes, you'll have 4)

    Two things.
    1) You can make (other) inversions by moving the root notes up one octave.
    2) sus2 and to a lesser extent sus4 chords will sound more dissonant when played at low pitches. If you like the sound of it go ahead and do it anyway but it can sound awful.
    Thanks for the tips Zen.

    After 4 years I still always fall back to similar chord progressions with the exact same root notes (some times in different octaves)
    But this helped me a lot! Thank you

    Start a progression in the 4th or 6th degree of the scale to add drama ...sounds epic ..and experiment with the length of the progression for example shorten it to 7 bars ..creates an unexpected skip and keeps the listener on their toes ...

    First and last tip. Listen and study to A LOT of CLASSICAL music, observe and analyze it. The best way to find your own character and evolve deeply and create something unique is to listen to a lot of different genre and especially classical music which includes everything. Everyone can start pressing keys install serum and start making beats. Making music is a whole different thing.

    First inversion is the root note one octave up instead of the top note one octave down?

    • @camfre4k
      @camfre4k 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      john van der molen no first inversion is when you use the 3 of the chord as the lowesr note. If you wanted to play an A minor (a-c-e) in first inversion you would start on the c, so it would be (c-e-a)

    • @jvandermolen
      @jvandermolen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@camfre4k Thats what i'm saying? A-C-E, A one octave op and you get C-E-A (1st), E-A-C (2nd), A-E-C (3rd). Zen said that th-cam.com/video/UbaAi80TCoQ/w-d-xo.html C-A-E is the first inversion... I think thats incorrect....

    There is definitely a good lesson if you are new to the music production and want to know more, but then.. this houldn't be complicated or made a certain way, I think this is too much theoretical lesson and also follows a "pattern" of just generic EDM. Plus I still think you can't teach music.. well you CAN teach theory but not "how to make chords" or "how to make melody", you can't teach that. I always say, if you got it in you, you will know when its good. Knowing all theory takes all the fun out of it I think / you feel limited, because you think that's how everyone does it. Then you just obsess yourself with theoretical stuff too much rather than listen and make something different.

    What ever notes you stack in the song those makes up the chord, its not that a chord progression is what chords you are writing down on a specific instrument, its what all instruments are playing together that defines the chord.

      Intello True, but it is a good practice to create the harmony first with a simple sound, like the piano he uses, and split the notes among other instruments afterwards. Anyway, I found it funny how he "discovers" the dominant 7th at the end. The day he finds the secondary dominants it will blow his mind.
