i thought what he said was really insightful and clear. when you're on drugs, you don't notice how ur life is getting off the right course, cuz your perception is blunted. when you're not on drugs you recognize when ur life is getting off course before it's way off course. to each his own, but yea that explanation was insightful to me

I don't like the effects of neuroleptics. I am forced to take them.

Not really sure how that analogy works about being more aware sober. You didn't differentiate between neurotypical vs not. I know that's part of your thing. However, it really feels wrong. One example is here. I spent 4 decades undiagnosed. The "high" from hypomania isn't any different in regards to being aware or not of changes in mood and whether or not to course correct. I suppose the drug analogy is ok by itself, but you snuck in your awareness thing and comparison to others. I can tell you without question the misdiagnosis for so long was so damaging because they used a symptom view of treatment and ignored the diagnosis. And now that I know what's up with my body, I can do way more planning to try to keep my mood regulated. A few of those things I did naturally but nowhere near the level of awareness before the diagnosis. I do love your approach to so many things and have no doubt you have your view clearly in your mind, but the "label" and awareness are now specific in my mind and I would be doing much worse without it. The awareness aspect really just outright puzzles me. I take any drug and I am really aware of the effects in mood. Why do you think I took it? It's not take and and stop thinking. It's oh my god that's different for anything unfamiliar or oh good I'm starting to relax. Or oh that's a new side effect I don't like. On and on. Recreational vs traditional medical. I have friends with substance abuse issues. They are absolutely aware of what they are doing. And one more thing you're totally missing. Everyone has their own comfort level with recreational drugs from absolutely none all the way to chronic abuse. I can and do stop using cannabis occasionally to make sure it's not sending me hypomanic. I get 0 withdrawals. I have 0 adverse effects. Trad Medicine in this area can't say that at all. In fact it's dangerous to not taper in some cases over several months or much more if you're on a high dose. I've rambled too much. I would just love to debate this one point about illness labels vs issue based treatments. I am not a fan of meds and for me the dangerous stuff is the prescribed NOT the recreational. FWIW: I stopped drinking much awhile ago as if it went too far I felt way too low beyond normal tired or drunk. After the diagnosis I booted alcohol for good. Sincerely, Michael

I'll take nicotine (I avoid 99% of the time), caffeine and cannabis as my chosen treatments any day over other meds if I could. I am on Adderall and Lamectal. The Adderall is like really good caffeine. The cannabis (you have to find your strain that works for you) blows the other meds away fir mood. The impairment is impractical for daytime use.

Lithium worked great for the short time I was on the prescription form but my organ levels went nutso. I take the orotate now and experience no obvious side effects beyond bad mood swings if I miss two consecutive doses.

Sorry for the thought dump. I'm sure you're used to it dealing with the disorder as a doc. :)

i think the point is that drugs blunt your perception of your own self and ur ability to gauge whether your life circumstances are good for you. under the influence of a drug, recreational or prescribed, you can't make that assessment as well. that was my interpretation at least

@@deewise1286 Likewise here. The manner in how psych meds work, I'm much better off drinking beer anyway but that's besides the point.
