One of the better Draco videos out there. Shows great footage of the take offs and landings. Mike is a multi-materials maestro and the plane embodies his mastery of carbon fiber, TIG welding, CNC machining, painting, wiring, etc., etc. What an inspiration to anyone who has ever tried to engineer and build something!
This aircraft was not designed by Draco, but by Polish engineer Ryszard Orłowski. It is PZL-104 Wilga built in 1960 and manufactured in Poland until 2008. Your Draco only replaced the engine with a more powerful one and installed a few lights. I wonder why you Americans still ascribe to yourself someone's projects and merits? And if you didn't know, he's working on another bush plane now called "Scrappy" that is going to be absolutely insane.
he is a insane engineer. I loved this plane. RIP Draco. He is one of the very few that has such a short take off and if you watch most they bang the tail wheel on the ground on take off. he doesn't hardly touch the tail wheel. Not to mention his power to weight is insane.
What I notice on this plane is the trailing link suspension for the tires, this should allow it to roll over larger rocks and debris easier without suffering catastrophic failure
Check out the video of him designing and machining that new suspension like 4 days before this event. The guy is an amazing engineer that needs very little sleep.
My Lord! Mike, 💪🏻 “back to work”, the STOL could still be shorter! 🤣 You, Sir are an absolute inspiration! I need a Draco poster for my 7 yr old future pilot daughters wall!
Ian Hall yeah, but it’s Draco, this plane (& its pilot\engineer) is simply outstanding, Mike is damn sure deserving of and eventually obligated to some merch for us, & proper reciprocation for this beautiful accomplishment. Great man, great plane..... aviation history for sure!

I think this was the very last STOL competition Draco ever did... And I'm pretty sure he was off the ground in a LOT less than 120 feet. Looked to me like less than 30.
The plane was wrecked today 9-16-2019 at Reno . Mike and the people in side the plane are uninjured . Heavy crosswind on take off . Mike put up a video and Blancoliro has a Video describing the Weather Front with winds come ripping thru . it was a very nice plane .
No kits, Mike engineered and modified this from scratch, longer wider wing, carbon wingtips, cowl, engine fresh air intake filter system, carbon wing tips, landing gear fuel tanks, wing tip fuel tanks, lower gear struts and shocks, and much much more...
@@AceSterTheMace... You could pay him a lot money to make another one, you cannot buy the parts he made from a catalog from his shop... Yet. Definetly not a kit. With so few Wilgas, a handful at most or less that want to highly modify them, I can't imagine this, a kit, being a profitable endeavor.
This ain't a kit this was a wilga that popped an engine and he modified it so severely the faa didn't wanna call it a wilga as it's barely got anything similar to what it used to be

Adam Smith Mike admits he screwed up and should have just pointed into the wind and taken off. He said it was Not the planes fault. Which makes him an honest pilot . Most guys make excuses instead of telling the truth. For this he has my respect.😇
I'm not sure what's so special about this plane and why everyone is so amazed by it. What do people think happens with a feather attached to a turbo-prop?
What an incredible aircraft! It almost seems to do the impossible. I'm curious what the total full-stop + take-off distance was. Probably less than most bush planes can do either.
Mr. Patey....have you ever thought of doing something with a 1,100 HP Garret? I've seen the Texas Turbine conversion done to a 208 on amphibs...almost as good as Draco.
Mike Patey has written off rebuilding Draco due to many safety concerns. As a Christmas gift to himself, he bought a new Wilga to rebuild into another Draco (2?).
Hi Mike, Had big plans to come see you on Thursday at the EAA in hopes that I might get my Flying Cowboys hat signed by you and the rest of the guys. I guess my luck ran out, as I pulled my replacement hip out of joint the day before and just got out of the hospital this past Sunday with a replaces hip again. What A bummer to me! Mike, your new suspension design is brilliant! She simply makes a leap for the air.

Such a badass bushplane. The prop going beta just sounds so freaking beautiful!
Polish plane, designed many years ago during Cold War. I am happy that you appreciate it.
@Marius Ipad true, but without good base it will be impossible, think about it
pretty much 70% of the plane was redesigned and custom built

Beyond impressive. Mike Patey and his twin brother Mark are two rely cool people. Watch the 15 build videos of this plane on there channel amazing.
Unbelievable good flying and very good aircraft that Draco 2000

Thats what i would say too, this thing is insane
Wow! Fantastic that looks like it’s catching a cable on landing.

Great video man, no needless footage, just Draco - love it👍🏼
going to the moon was one thing, seeing draco take off like a super charged falcon is another thing, crazy impressive, keep winning Mr Patey!
I wish I had gone up to Livermore. I'd happily drive 90 miles to see DRACO, and Mike Patey too.
The gear modifications look fantastic in action! 🛫🛬 🛫🛬

Why bother with a runway Do what helicopters do.

Wonder what draco would be like with swapping out the single prop for a contra-rotating props..
Very nice plane.
There wasn't on and there never will be another Draco. I was able to recognize her just by her prop noise whenever she flew over me.
This plane is based on the Polish PZL-104 Wilga.

Actually, the turbine has 715 HP, but the gearbox limits it to 680 HP. And the climb angle is limited by not having a air acrobatic license.
