One of the better Draco videos out there. Shows great footage of the take offs and landings. Mike is a multi-materials maestro and the plane embodies his mastery of carbon fiber, TIG welding, CNC machining, painting, wiring, etc., etc. What an inspiration to anyone who has ever tried to engineer and build something!
This aircraft was not designed by Draco, but by Polish engineer Ryszard Orłowski. It is PZL-104 Wilga built in 1960 and manufactured in Poland until 2008. Your Draco only replaced the engine with a more powerful one and installed a few lights. I wonder why you Americans still ascribe to yourself someone's projects and merits? @@andreashabeck1155 Not true, he modified the wing only. What do you mean, "completely new"? Extending the wings and adding some fancy tips does not mean make it completely new. What's important is the wing structural design and it's aerodynamic controls, whatever is the name in English... :)
His videos of building this plane are amazing. I don't fly or engineer but the guy is a genius and a great teacher. Makes it so even laymen can understand what he's doing. This plane is amazing. And if you didn't know, he's working on another bush plane now called "Scrappy" that is going to be absolutely insane.
My Lord! Mike, 💪🏻 “back to work”, the STOL could still be shorter! 🤣 You, Sir are an absolute inspiration! I need a Draco poster for my 7 yr old future pilot daughters wall!
Ian Hall yeah, but it’s Draco, this plane (& its pilot\engineer) is simply outstanding, Mike is damn sure deserving of and eventually obligated to some merch for us, & proper reciprocation for this beautiful accomplishment. Great man, great plane..... aviation history for sure!
he is a insane engineer. I loved this plane. RIP Draco. He is one of the very few that has such a short take off and if you watch most they bang the tail wheel on the ground on take off. he doesn't hardly touch the tail wheel. Not to mention his power to weight is insane.
The STOL facility is born out of the leading edge ‘slots’ developed by the former British, Handley Page Ltd on their “Gugnunc” one-off plane around 1930’ish. (I was a draughtsman with them 1956/66)
Slots, slats and flaps all worked together beautifully, along with reverse thrust for the landing, on that aeroplane. It's a real shame that it was written off.
What I notice on this plane is the trailing link suspension for the tires, this should allow it to roll over larger rocks and debris easier without suffering catastrophic failure
Check out the video of him designing and machining that new suspension like 4 days before this event. The guy is an amazing engineer that needs very little sleep.
they never announce the distance where it can be heard and I'm always waiting to here it.Really amazing to watch going to those amazing places like your vids
Adam Smith Mike admits he screwed up and should have just pointed into the wind and taken off. He said it was Not the planes fault. Which makes him an honest pilot . Most guys make excuses instead of telling the truth. For this he has my respect.😇
It’s very impressive, but, what is its payload rating. It does things at a great pace as we see here. This is a great airchine, loved the vlog, thanks for posting and sharing. A great undertaking in the designing this tail dragger.
I'm not sure what's so special about this plane and why everyone is so amazed by it. What do people think happens with a feather attached to a turbo-prop?
I think this was the very last STOL competition Draco ever did... And I'm pretty sure he was off the ground in a LOT less than 120 feet. Looked to me like less than 30.
The plane was wrecked today 9-16-2019 at Reno . Mike and the people in side the plane are uninjured . Heavy crosswind on take off . Mike put up a video and Blancoliro has a Video describing the Weather Front with winds come ripping thru . it was a very nice plane .
No kits, Mike engineered and modified this from scratch, longer wider wing, carbon wingtips, cowl, engine fresh air intake filter system, carbon wing tips, landing gear fuel tanks, wing tip fuel tanks, lower gear struts and shocks, and much much more...
@@AceSterTheMace... You could pay him a lot money to make another one, you cannot buy the parts he made from a catalog from his shop... Yet. Definetly not a kit. With so few Wilgas, a handful at most or less that want to highly modify them, I can't imagine this, a kit, being a profitable endeavor.
This ain't a kit this was a wilga that popped an engine and he modified it so severely the faa didn't wanna call it a wilga as it's barely got anything similar to what it used to be
Mr. Patey....have you ever thought of doing something with a 1,100 HP Garret? I've seen the Texas Turbine conversion done to a 208 on amphibs...almost as good as Draco.
Hi Mike, Had big plans to come see you on Thursday at the EAA in hopes that I might get my Flying Cowboys hat signed by you and the rest of the guys. I guess my luck ran out, as I pulled my replacement hip out of joint the day before and just got out of the hospital this past Sunday with a replaces hip again. What A bummer to me! Is there any way to get my hat signed by you and the flying Cowboys. By the way I fly RC plane also.
I have 14000 hours as a helicopter, pilot, you made me interested in a bush style pilot. If I got a kit Fox, how hard do you think it would be to transition? It sure looks like fun. Just retired from Los Angeles sheriffs aero. Thought this would be fun. Looking for your honest answer. Thanks
What an incredible aircraft! It almost seems to do the impossible. I'm curious what the total full-stop + take-off distance was. Probably less than most bush planes can do either.
Fantastic TH-cam videos.👍 As an engineer and airplane entusiast. I have seen every video. Just one question, how are the wing groundloop protectors work after adding the extended wing tanks? Love Your work, planes and videos. Thank You vey much. Arne Eitrem, Noeway
Mike Patey has written off rebuilding Draco due to many safety concerns. As a Christmas gift to himself, he bought a new Wilga to rebuild into another Draco (2?).
Increible! Despegue en 3 mtros y aterrizaje en 10......Casi como un Helicoptero! Pero requiere un motor Superpotente, perfil Alar con m,ucha sustentación y poco peso.
Yes. He's working on a 500 hp Cub and naming it Scrappy. Watch his videos to find out why. He actually started this before the accident so neither the work nor the name come from that event.

Unbelievable good flying and very good aircraft that Draco 2000
That suspension is amazing work.
Polish plane, designed many years ago during Cold War. I am happy that you appreciate it.
@Marius Ipad true, but without good base it will be impossible, think about it
pretty much 70% of the plane was redesigned and custom built

Just rewatched this. Your camera work is excellent!
One of the coolest planes I've ever seen ...
👍 👍 👍 TopDog Mike Patey and his Wilga are both uniquely.

Beyond impressive. Mike Patey and his twin brother Mark are two rely cool people. Watch the 15 build videos of this plane on there channel amazing.
RIP 'DRACO' - Sept. 16th, 2019 in Reno, NV. Many of us miss this amazing 'no runway, no problem' aircraft.

Mike and "Draco" A class act! He won't be down for long!
Poor Draco :( RIP! Glad no one was hurt!
What a waste, at least all 3 came out OK.

My god is the aircraft nice! Congraulation.... from Germany!
Nice job filming.
Man, those Patey twins are wild, their next creations will be even wilder.
... why line up with the run way lengthwise when the width would be sufficent?
Why bother with a runway Do what helicopters do.

"This engine has a lot of planes" LOL
Can this plane perform stunts? Loops, Barrel Rolls, inverted flying, etc.?

If I we're an Apache pilot I'd totally sneak into a STOL competition
Why did fuel spray on the flood at 00:28
I think that is just unburnt fuel & oil being pushed out while the turbine powers up.(fairly normal)

Puts my Kitfox to shame. I occasionally fly mine to model airplane fields.
This plane is based on the Polish PZL-104 Wilga.
That's even got the birds scratching their heads... I mean he's landing within the length of the plane?
L Smith I’m talking about the landing at around 5:30.
That’s clearly not 96’...
@L Smith he's unwisely throwing his turbo prop engine in reverse because who cares, his family will just buy him another jet engine
Flying Cowboys!
Actually, the turbine has 715 HP, but the gearbox limits it to 680 HP. And the climb angle is limited by not having a air acrobatic license.
Maybe illusion, but here it looks like he's off the ground in about 50'...amazing.
