Album Interpretations several months of work. There is an excellent documentary to je found on youtube that follows a few grand masters making katanas in the old fashioned way.
You know it was their job, they were paid for this, and usually the better blackmisth was he better payment they got for it, so well they had this time becaus it was their job.
The forging and the polishing were done by different craftsmen, but yeah I'm sure it took a long time to get a finished katana. However, I don't think they put as much detail on a sword if they were in a hurry.
It's just so satisfying to see Ilya work, turning a chunk of metal into something so artistic and deadly at the same time. It's just like watching a baby dog growing into a full grown husky.
agreed but i prefer watching him do engraving i don't know the beauty of watching him work is almost hypnotic and the end result is nothing short of art
Japanese smiths would have melted any copper on hand, melting old pipe is quicker than smelting ore. Realistically a smith would probably have bought copper ingots. People like to think that Japanese swordsmiths did all the things, but really they just shaped the blade. smelting raw materials was usually someone else's job.
Ilyas is the GOAT. But you never see comments about him, its mainly just comments about what people want to be built. Ilya doesnt get the praise he deserves

True that and i would really love to see how such tools are made. One must first build his tools, before learning to use them and gradually master them to actually get to working with them. Engraving is tedious job, but i have patience for such things.. problem is that local hardware shop really dont have chisels like that in the shelf and sensei Ilya has only shown small portion what is needed to learn. I dont come here just to see cool swords, but learn new methods to do things and get inspiration to my own work. I would really like even raw/very little edited video, with little commentary on the side. I have been saying this for years, hopefully they will do this:)

Found this video by accident (searching for Forged in Fire episodes) and I am happy that I did. As much as I love watching FiF, this is so much better. Watching the details of the making of one weapon, vs watching 4 (then 3, then 2) people compete and catching only glimpses of how they do their work, is sooooo much better
I’ve watched this twice now. I’m even more amazed thinking just how much dedication ONE single man had to commit for a completed sword. This sword is nicely done. Yet, the master done all his word by hand, hand forged from beginning to dedication to its owner. Not once was there a mill, hammer mill, modern furnace, fancy engravers tools. All in there time was state of the art. What we would say were pretty primitive to our modern industrial tools available in use today. I would love to go back in time and learn the secrets of the masters. Impressive indeed. Good build from your team. The sword is beautiful.
At a point the japanese blacksmiths had power hammers and the hand griding and polishing wasn't done by the one who made the sword, but yeah, still impressive and extrenelly time consuming either way, in WWII Japan actually employed industrial methods to the swords for their soldiers, and they had to be done fast and without that much care
"historical ninjato" is a bit of a misnomer as there is little evidence to suggest they existed in that context. The nearest historical example to a ninjato is called a chokuto. Honestly it doesn't make sense for what is essentially a spy trying to blend in to have a signature weapon anyway.
This honestly has to be the best thing I've ever watched on here, yes Pyramids Head's Knife was pretty badass and everything else here but...this has to top it off in a different level.
there never was a time in history where a katana quality wise was as good as an upper class European sword. one of many reasons was that the Japanese had pretty shitty steel so that they started importing it from Europe the first chance they got. (to this day most "traditional" Japanese blacksmith use imported steel). tdlr: no it wasn't
Jorge Sandoval folding to achive higher quality was known earlier in Europe(among other techniques) than Japan. when the Portuguese arived in around 1540 they ended the samurai era by introducing the Japanese to firearms. the Europeans always had the superior weaponry and armoury measured by quality and effectiveness. this hasn't changed to this day. and no my opinion is not biased for a long time even when I began blacksmithing I also belived katanas where the pinnakle of quality and craftsmanship but that's just not true. peace out and have a good one
these guys truly do the art of sword making justice. These katanas they make are so beautiful i wonder if when you compare modern materials and techniques, would these katanas rival the katanas made my masamune/muramasa?
Saw a video of how it's done in Japan. 3 days just to forge and rough shape. When it was all done (weeks later). A swordsman went through those mats so clean that it didn't move while it was cut 3 times from different directions. Awesome!!
No he's right, Sword makers we're allowed to test on Prisoners their newly-forged blades! Depending on the crime, they could take a hand, maybe a leg, sometimes if a prisoner did something really bad, They were allowed to take their life.. Very interesting really!
they did it to not only test the lade but also rank them a sword that could cut through a whole body and retain its blade and sharpness over something that could only do a limb or two was concidered a better blade and therefore yelded much more respect and honor to a bladesmith
did you know that whenever sword makers tried to make swords made of damascus steel, they would heat the blade until it looked like the rising sun in the desert, then cooled to a deep purple then plunged into the body of a muscular slave. Using donkey urine was also another way too. I found it on this website www.nytimes.com/1981/09/29/science/the-mystery-of-damascus-steel-appears-solved.html

Who in the world disliked this video? This was seriously craftmanship is better than most people could even have the patience to do. What an awesome video. Now I'd love to see the Japanese do it old school.

Man At Arms, you guys do a lot of recreation swords, giant swords, functional replicas and fantasy weapons. I wanna see you guys create a high-performance sword. The best sword Baltimore Knife and Sword have ever made. Top of the line steel, distal tapers, perfect centres of percussion, good edge retention (maybe differential tempering?), razor sharp (i.e. will shave you), solid construction, original engraving and art designs, good blade geometry, excellent point of balance, a protective pommel, ergonomic pommel letting you feel your edge alignment, of course the pommel construction will be on point as always, a good flex to take the strain of impact (HEMA or Kendo consultants for the feel of the blades? I dunno...), and basically make the most perfect sword you guys ever have. Call it, "At the Man's Arm," or "the Perfect Sword." I think it would be an awesome challenge, from forging to grinding, to material sourcing. I don't know what he wants. Since it's not my wording, I included his name. My desire is slightly different, but close enough, and I figure that if they see the same comment repeatedly, they'll respond with an appropriate video.
Eh. FIF is much more closely controlled than Man At Arms. The blades forged on FIF aren't even fully heat treated by the smiths, the tempering is done off screen between filming days.
Very cool result with the Nodachi. Also, Mark Dacascos as "Zero" in John Wick Parabellum was excellent. He played the psychotic fan of the Legendary John Wick really well.
@@Blizzard0fOz93 No that was Brandon Lee. Bruce Lee's son who played in the crow. Mark Dacascos has a few movies such as only the strong , double dragon etc. They do look alike a little especially with the make up from the crow.
So the length of that sword, it makes me think it was specifically for taking down horse mounted soldiers? Or maybe cutting down the horses themselves? I don't see it being a practical blade in ground fighting in dense troop areas. But it's a beautiful weapon. Also, I hope you guys are paying Ilya a lot of money because it seems like he's doing all the heavy lifting in these weapons builds.
Eethan O'Connell you are pretty much correct. Have you ever seen Princess Mononoke ? In it there's a seen where a few bandits have these swords, and mostly what they use them for is cutting off horses heads when the rider is full charge, and causing the rider to be flung, usually to their death if they are riding fast enough.
Eethan O'Connell from my understanding it was like the great sword and was used against the riders and Spears or used much like a poll arm or a longer Nagamaki
You wouldn't be dueling with the Nodachi, it was more of a battle field weapon...I mean Nodachi literally means field sword. So it was used by infantry but once the government set the law that swords needed to be a certain length it lost it use and it kind of just became a weapon for ceremonies. Its about the size of Scottish claymore.
So many talanted and high-skilled guys made this sword. It's really hard to imagine how in the ancient times one person was able to manage all this process by his own. Astonishing.
Impressive... I’ve always wanted to forge such a worthy work of art. Such beauty and such a extremely deadly weapon in the hands of an experienced person with the heart and passion of the true Samurai! The fluidity of the skill of the Samurai with the this weapon shows both the commitment and dedication from the heart and soul. Excellent craftsmanship! A true honor to watch this level of artistic expression. Hat tip to all.
Hey everyone! If you all don't know... there's two LONGER swords that were made by the Japanese! The Odachi, & the Ootachi. *Odachi,* translating into "Long Sword"... is the "Middle Child" between the Nodachi, and the Ootachi. The Odachi usually had a Sword Length of 90cm to 100cm in length. Weighing in between 10 to 39 pounds. Then, there's the lesser known *Ootachi,* which also means "Long Tachi". Japanese for, "Great Sword". These swords weren't just meant for ceremonies and shrines... during the Kurakami Era, the Ootachi was the MONSTER of the Swords in Japan... measuring between 9 feet, to even 15 FEET IN LENGTH! Weighing in between 50 pounds, all the way to 165 pounds! These Swords were legendary, their mythology of stories spread all over Japan... there were two legendary Ootachi that are well known to this day! One being; *The Norimitsu Ootachi* Otherwise known commonly, as the Norimitsu Odachi. Its Sword length, measures at an astounding 337cm in length... which is 12.38 feet in length. And it weighs a hefty 53 Pounds... making it, one of the Largest Ootachi, in Japan! Then, the KING of them all... the *Haja-No Ootachi.* The Largest Sword that was crafted during the Late Edo Era of Japan. This sword was meant to "Defeat Evil Demons, then Bring Peace & Prosperity to the Land". The two swords are now enshrined in their respective places. Only available to be viewed once a year, during an annual event.
Actually its the bastard sword, or the hand and a half sword. Ingame they call it the longsword. (For whatever reason, a real long sword is one-handed) A claymore is a 2-handed sword.
Katana's are one of the strongest swords around actually, Original Katana's made back in the time of the samurai were so strong they could cut through Knights Chain mail. Today's Katana's can cut through 2inchs of steel before breaking
You need to look more into weapons throughout history. They all have their strength and weaknesses. One of the reasons the Romans were so strong was because they learned how to use different weaponry.
Amaze Master sticking a blade on an engine, if it was fully functional it would probably be heavier than their buster sword build. I'd pay to see that happen
I'm not giving up! i know you guys played heroes of might and magic yourself.. =P So again i suggest Angelic Alliance from heroes of might and magic VI "They united their tremendous skills to forge the most wonderful sword ever seen on the surface of Ashan, a blade that would be radiant like a ray of the sun, piercing and destroying any darkness in its path. They named it the Angelic Alliance and entrusted it to the one who would lead their armies to battle"
By updated you mean the Volume 4 version right? Because if so, HELL YEAH, that'd be so cool to see them make a shield with a scabbard inside of it. Although, the folding in and out part i think they'd just skip XD
me gustó este modelo también me gustaría ver la daga del Green Rangers de los Power Rangers estaría genial esta llena de detalles muy complejas ojalá que la tomen en cuenta muchas gracias...
Xynzienite NG By that logic Man At Arms never should have made greatsword of Artorias because it had garbage DPS and a terrible moveset. And no, it's just a well known fact in the Souls community that Rakuyo was blatantly overpowered
Very impressive. Ilya is the heart and soul of that shop. Seems he can do it all; and mostly does on every project. He's a master blade smith, weapon's historian, metallurgist, engraver, machinist, woodworker, wood carver and an all around true multi-discipline artist. That is one big blade. I wonder how much they sold it for and who the lucky owner is? No doubt they had many offers on that impeccable piece of art. Personally, I prefer a standard sized Katana and would love to have a folded Tamahagane one that beautifully built by Ilya and crew.
I did see the Sakabatou irl once, a guy had it forged for a Kenshin cosplay and I had the luck of befriending him at the local con. Can't imagine it being done though, the reversed blade must pose some serious problems in production.

No Ilya, no man at arms. He needs his own spinoff.
Well, he is a Forged In Fire Champion after all
Eh. FIF is much more closely controlled than Man At Arms. The blades forged on FIF aren't even fully heat treated by the smiths, the tempering is done off screen between filming days.
Do the Demoman's Eyelander from Team Fortress 2
okay okay H E N T A I
YES YES better idea: Make an australium Eyelander
Amputator will do the trick ;)
+Araflo_44 YES!
Nah, the Horseless Headless Horsemann's Headtaker
Very cool result with the Nodachi. Also, Mark Dacascos as "Zero" in John Wick Parabellum was excellent. He played the psychotic fan of the Legendary John Wick really well.
Swedes, Weebs, and Armored Dweebs! Can't wait for this game!
Brandon Alvarez Hahaha
Brandon Alvarez
lol
dont forget the Norwegians and the danes
dosen't rhyme.
InfernoPlus anyone?
Ilya at arms*
hes the only reason i watch this channel beside for the weapons themselves :3
So... Man at arms would be correct still
Yeah,its not men
He's an awesome talent
Connor Fogal 😂😂😂😂
NOICE. We got more detail footage this time around.👍😎
Everyone else: The host is from John Wick 3
Me: Allez Cuisine!!!!
Anish Patel what do u mean I’ve legit only seen one comment about the host guy is from John wick 3
He also played Eric Draven in the short-lived tv show The Crow: Stairway To Heaven and Wo Fat in the reboot of Hawaii 5-0.
@@Blizzard0fOz93 No that was Brandon Lee. Bruce Lee's son who played in the crow. Mark Dacascos has a few movies such as only the strong , double dragon etc. They do look alike a little especially with the make up from the crow.
@@gabrielvalentin3940 no, he died during the filming of the movie. Mark Dacascos played the same character, but in the tv show.
@@gabrielvalentin3940 I think that he was fatally wounded specifically during the shootout scene, if i recall correctly.
Ilya is way too good, its disturbing and makes me question the reason of my presence on this earth.
Raph Vandal life struggles
tru
I can guarantee he didn't get that good overnight. It's like driving stick, it takes practice
profile pic fits perfectly
He was on another show as a competitor called forged in fire, I remember him being an oddball but it was neat watching him do stuff on his own.
Inigo Montoya's Rapier from The Princess Bride
Patrick Forshag || Totally agree
This ^ amazing
It would be about time too!
This has been requested since
Season One of Man at Arms, the Original .
Marc Dacascos was a perfect choice to introduce this show!
hes the crying freeman after all
The name of this episode should be Iron Chef: Man at Arms: Reforged
Lol indeed
So the length of that sword, it makes me think it was specifically for taking down horse mounted soldiers? Or maybe cutting down the horses themselves?
I don't see it being a practical blade in ground fighting in dense troop areas.
But it's a beautiful weapon.
Also, I hope you guys are paying Ilya a lot of money because it seems like he's doing all the heavy lifting in these weapons builds.
***** but would you be dueling with it?
Eethan O'Connell you are pretty much correct. Have you ever seen Princess Mononoke ? In it there's a seen where a few bandits have these swords, and mostly what they use them for is cutting off horses heads when the rider is full charge, and causing the rider to be flung, usually to their death if they are riding fast enough.
cowartd I do remember that movie. :-)
Nikana prime Warframe
awesome sword
yisss been requesting this for far too long now XD
uhhhh, Nikana Prime for life
jose The Gram.
they wouldn't
the easiest swords for them would be: original Nikana, Galatine, Skana
Well ninja space magic is why...
Aerondight and/or Toussaint Steel Sword from The Witcher 3
So many talanted and high-skilled guys made this sword. It's really hard to imagine how in the ancient times one person was able to manage all this process by his own. Astonishing.
This video ain't right. Somebody; cook The Chairman an epic meal.
do the corvo's blade from dishonored
totally agree, that would be so cool.
Roger França second.
4th!
where is 2nd I'm 2nd
Yes.
I would pay literally $10,000 to buy a genuine, sharp, effective replica of corvo's blade
Make the Warden Long Sword-For Honor
That would be the Claymore sword
Actually its the bastard sword, or the hand and a half sword.
Ingame they call it the longsword. (For whatever reason, a real long sword is one-handed)
A claymore is a 2-handed sword.
ok thats nice what ever it is it will be nice to see one forged.
The claymore...
No, long swords are two handed, gtfo with your pseudo historical knowledge
Ruby Rose's Crescent Rose Scythe from RWBY
Apex93 yes!!!!!!!
The transformation is impossible. They should make Corvos folding sword from Dishonored. That one is feasible.
Apex93 it's already been said that they are trying to figure out a way to do that, it may be coming
Whenever they do a Japanese weapon, they should just call it "Iliya builds a Japanese weapon"
Free Play Mode 😂😂😂😂
Those are the best, cause Ilya's the best
I would love to see more historical builds like this. Especially a Hussar szabla, a yatagan, or a dao.
Make some war hammers and mauls for once.
Zangief maybe Reinhardt's hammer?
Yeah, make some weapons that can actually kill a man in full plate armor, not this flimsy Katayana that will break after 10 sword clashes lmao.
Katana's are one of the strongest swords around actually, Original Katana's made back in the time of the samurai were so strong they could cut through Knights Chain mail. Today's Katana's can cut through 2inchs of steel before breaking
lel
You need to look more into weapons throughout history. They all have their strength and weaknesses. One of the reasons the Romans were so strong was because they learned how to use different weaponry.
Every time i watch this channel I want to make the swords
Master Class by Illya: I would be the first to sign up!
Anyone else?
The only thing that makes me proud of my nationality.
I was in a sword shop at a renaissance fair, and the owner's had swords from this place. They looked like they were forged in the heavens
could be hard for anyone else to be the first to sign up if you already are ;)
Anna Kournikova is hot. That should count for something.
February 14 that's my birthday
Crying Freeman made me big fan of Mark Dacascos, Tony Jaa reminds me of him, thanks for the vid ^^
Genial, was für eine Liebe zum Schwert - was für eine Detailtreue, das wäre mein Favorit Schwert für ein echten Kampf.
Nero's Red Queen from Devil May Cry 4
Amaze Master sticking a blade on an engine, if it was fully functional it would probably be heavier than their buster sword build. I'd pay to see that happen
Doubtless it would be amazing!)
Amaze Master if that were highly possible
You guys should get Doug Marcaida to do the Hosting. he is great. He is also really good with weapons.
War2244 it will keel!
Such a beautiful blade. The best one you've made yet.
Nathaniel Davila What about the excalibur that they made for king of avalon
that one is better imo
Tyrone Magnus mAh I think he means plain little detail but still beautiful.
The blade of Artorias
this is actually less than mediocre compare to the true traditional way of forging a samurai sword....
Love the production and details on this one
I'm not giving up! i know you guys played heroes of might and magic yourself.. =P
So again i suggest Angelic Alliance from heroes of might and magic VI
"They united their
tremendous skills to forge the most wonderful sword ever seen on the
surface of Ashan, a blade that would be radiant like a ray of the sun,
piercing and destroying any darkness in its path. They named it the
Angelic Alliance and entrusted it to the one who would lead their armies
to battle"
The curve that blade takes on f4om the quench is legit as hell! Fascinating stuff. I loved Mark in "Le pacte de Loups".
When I see Mark dacascos, I remember 'only the strong' movie.. that capoeira style..
paranauee...
Jaune Arc's (updated) Shield and Sword from RWBY
My man
By updated you mean the Volume 4 version right? Because if so, HELL YEAH, that'd be so cool to see them make a shield with a scabbard inside of it. Although, the folding in and out part i think they'd just skip XD
Kyle Posey Yes, the updated version from Volume 4
Crocea Mors :D
Apex93 they can't do Crescent Rose, but please do Crosea Mors!!!!
jets hook swords from the last airbender
yes pleaeaeaeaease!!
thor thach The blades are called Chinese hooks
Kabal from Mortal Kombat use those too
Wiksisis
me gustó este modelo también me gustaría ver la daga del Green Rangers de los Power Rangers estaría genial esta llena de detalles muy complejas ojalá que la tomen en cuenta muchas gracias...
"And now for your secret ingredient..."
16:21 that moment when something mildly cool happens, but has almost nothing to do with the vid, and you enjoy it anyway.
PeaceKeeper!
Peace keeper
Peacekeeper
I know you are Just Sayin
Peacekeeper
How about Himura Kenshin's Back-blade?
*The Rakuyo from Bloodborne!*
Xynzienite NG everything from bloodborne xD
Xynzienite NG By that logic Man At Arms never should have made greatsword of Artorias because it had garbage DPS and a terrible moveset. And no, it's just a well known fact in the Souls community that Rakuyo was blatantly overpowered
LoganSoulsBorne4 don't know what you're talking about the greatsword of Artorias but other than that, yes Rakuyo is overpowered and I love it so much
I dont care about a ratio I only want Fellatio They DID make the Washing Pole. In other countries, the Washing Pole is called the Nodachi
Hands-down always the most beautiful sword they have ever made
i just enjoy watching you guys make these things. Mad skills
Need to have Mark back for a build of the bone whip sword from Brotherhood of the Wolf.
sortedevaras hell yes!!
that beautiful sound that warns the moment: Let's test the weapon!
You guys need to team up with Zombie Go Boom, they can test your weapons against "human"skulls
Shawn Dennis they already have
which video with name
Affan Sami I believe its the 'Zombie Killer Weapon Challenge'
Shawn Dennis I was gonna write the same thing they make these amazing sword and try them on watermelons lol
Literally 90% of this build was Illya's handiwork.
I would love if you could make shinobi's chained dual kamas or the (kusarigama)
Lopr
Easy go rob some Japanese farmer and buy 2 chains
Now I want to see a series where Mark Dacascos talks about history’s greatest warriors.
I love that there's metal music playing whilst an elderly woman is just cutting some bronze
Haha
does anyone else want to see kenshins reversed blade sword from rurouni kenshin
You must make the infinity gontlet of Thanos like Now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!,,!,!,
Benjamin Morris Wars sword ChaosEater Darksiders
Benjamin Morris khenshis weird mkx
Benjamin Morris been asking for that for a long time
I did see the Sakabatou irl once, a guy had it forged for a Kenshin cosplay and I had the luck of befriending him at the local con. Can't imagine it being done though, the reversed blade must pose some serious problems in production.
Tommy's Dragon Dagger from MMPR!
Mind blown... I've watched so many of these videos. Truly talented people
I liked Mark Dacascos's narration in this!
良くここまで再現したな。すげぇ……
I want to see them make the scabbard for that bad boy!
Mr.Mark Dacoscos my favorite martial artist since the American samurai and a great host for Man at Arms.
Using the same sound for 3 different swing broke my immersion so hard lmao
Amazing job as usual, could you guys make the Lawbringers Pole Axe from For Honor
Please do Zoro's black katana shusui from One Piece
Akainu Sakazuki I want them to do all three at once, the ones he got in logue town I mean
