So there is a bit of a back story to Murder on Music Row. There was an awards show a year or so before this that George Jones was to perform on but the music executives wouldn’t let him do the whole song, just a line or two because they gave the time to the new artists to perform. Allen Jackson was also scheduled to perform one of his new songs on the show but when he came out he sang George Jones song instead of his own. Classy move on his part. Basically gave the executives the middle finger. So there is where the line about the Possum in the song comes from.
George Strait in the 80’s and Alan Jackson in the 90’s were the two artists that single-handedly kept traditional, western swing, honky tonk country alive. George Strait is considered The King because of this. Country in the 80’s went Pop and in the 90’s reverted back to neo-traditional styles which created some of the biggest stars the genre has ever had. All because of George Strait. Also, “Music Row” is 16th Avenue in Nashville where hundreds of country artists recorded their classic songs.
The possum is George Jones. I love this song. Alan Jackson and George Strait are the greatest. George Jones and Alan Jackson did a song " Good year for the roses" check it out sometime.
So glad yall listened to this one! George Jones was the Opossum. I am one of those that listen to the old stuff and usually shun the pop crap, never liked pop even when wrapped up and wearing a country bow.
This song is so true! I miss the older country music. The Possum was George Jones. You should listen to George Jones song "Who's Going to Fill Their Shoes" another awesome song that's related to this one. 💕
Back in 1992 or so, George Strait starred in a movie "Pure Country" about a country artist who had moved into the smoke and fire special effects, etc., type of entertainment. It was bugging him so one day he went AWOL and went back to his old home place and the small roadhouse where he got his start. His grandma told him she liked it better when he just sat down with his guitar and sang, which is what he eventually did when he got back with the band. There's much more to this movie, but it seems a lot like what "Murder On Music Row" is about. All those who saw, for example, Garth Brooks concerts with the crashing guitars, fire and smoke, flying around on wires over the crowd, etc., get what they're talking about here.
Y'all missed where George said "even the Hag wouldn't have a chance on today's radio" He's referring to the now late country legend Merle Haggard, who's arguably one of the greatest singer songwriter's in country music history. Enjoyed your video! If y'all haven't listened to Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound by Hank Williams, Jr check it out, seeing your show is about whiskey and music 🎵
Yup Possum was George Jones. Guys, several comments here about George and Alan writing this. They did not. This was written by 2 great songwriters Larry Cordle and Larry Shell.
I agree it's a great song Valma, but they didn't write it. Larry Cordle and Larry Shell wrote it. They are 2 amazing Nashville writers, Also Larry Cordle had (maybe still has?) a band called Lonesome Standard Time. He also wrote a song that Ricky Skaggs had a hit with called Highway 40 Blues. ; ))
I am a huge traditional country music fan, always have been, and this song is my anthem, the delivery, can't be topped George and Alan are 2 of the best story tellers ever to perform, and thier message is true, the nashville powers that be, would absolutely turn away Hank Sr. And Jr. As well, the Hag(Merle Haggard) and the possum(George Jones) as a fan though, I still listen to all of them and keep them alive
Great song and true message. I'm guilty of leaving country radio, probably 5 or 6 years ago, because if I want to listen to pop rock, I would turn the channel. I am not saying I think todays music is bad. It's just not country.
Exactly... I couldn't tell you most of the names of any country artists nowadays. I just don't listen to the radio like I used to, not since country turned pop and pop turned nasty. If I'm going to listen to something it's going to be old school music! Back before everything was about sex, money and drugs and a bunch of naked girls parading around like hoes. 😔😡
As you've discovered most country music these days is rock/ pop/rap, most definitely NOT traditional county. I don't even listen to the so called country music stations anymore. Love this song and both artists are absolute Legends!!!!
Love this. Loved George Jones and George Strait and Alan Jackson. Real down to earth gifted singers / songwriter's sing the truth. I won't listen to new pop rock Country . I like to turn the knob to listen to a different genre.
George Strait and Alan Jackson are pure country. There are some current singers/bands I like (Chris, Blake, Zack Brown Band for example) but there are some that skate the edge of country music in an attempt to attract country fans when they are actually pop. And hey, there are a lot of pop artist that I like. But when it comes to country, I find myself mostly listen to the old school stuff (Johnny Cash, George Jones, Dolly) and listening to a lot of late 80's and 90's country. And the difference between then and now is very noticeable. Mr. George Jones was The Possum. I suggest 'Midnight In Montgomery' by Alan Jackson. As for George Strait "All My Ex's Live In Texas" is a fun song. I think you will enjoy it.
The older stuff is definitely my favorite. My Playlist has multiple personality disorder. There are some newer artists that have a throwback style. Midland is great. "Drinking Problem", and "Cheatin Songs" are worth a listen. Also David Ball. "Look what followed me Home" is a to start a rabbit hole.
I remember watching this. I quit watching all the award shows & todays country a long time ago. I listen to a radio station that plays from the 90s on down. But l still feel they don't play enough of the older country. Miss the story songs that came from the heart with the steel pedal guitar, banjo, fiddle & harmonica. It saddens me that Country Misic got to big for it's boots.
Fellow indiana boys I see! I’m up here near Warsaw! I’m only 25, but won’t give any new country the time of the day, my family (both mom and dad side) are from kentucky. But somehow we ended up here! My grandparents were big time holler hillbillies so this type of music just runs in my blood lol. Anyways, a singer of fellow Kentucky heritage, Dwight yoakam has a few great live performances on TH-cam in 1986 in Austin TX. check out his performance of “she wore red dresses”! Thanks!!
You guys would probably like Merle Haggard. He was a country songwriter but his guitar picking had rock influences for sure. George Jones was the Possum. Willie Nelson was good friends with Merle and as you know, Willie is a great guitarist. They were all friends with Glen Cambell who played session guitar for the Wrecking Crew in the 60s and 70s.
Saw this and couldn't click on it fast enough. Commenting before you pop the cork. Awesome, Song of the year and never released as a single. (The Possum is George Jones.)
16th Avenue in Nashville is where all the record companies are. So when they said they saw someone running from 16th Avenue they were talkin about murder was committed by the record companies. Only two of today's country greats could sing a song about the record companies killing traditional country music and not worry about the repercussions. They performed this song at one of the Country Music Award ceremonies and the crowd seemed to agree
Alan Jackson is definitely an OG, Straight came out in 81, but had his first big Album in 82, Jackson came out in 89 first big single was in 1990, George Straight has already retired in 2012. They both are OG’s. I agree more so George Straight, but Alan Jackson definitely is one too. His Tour is, “ last call, one more for the Road.” Has Health issues and basically told fans that he wont be doing touring forever, dont know if he’s retiring or not, Alan Jackson is my favorite country singer of all time, they both are Country Music Hall of Famers, George became one after he retired I believe, but for someone to be in the Hall of fame still singing, writing music and touring is insane. If i wrong about straights hall of fame let me know i know a lot about country singers but more so Alan Jackson then any of them.
Dustin got it with the possum You guys have to watch the Live show Mike drop moment when Jackson stops his song live and goes into the possums song choices after they told George he couldnt play his whole song > pure badassery Then literally drops the mike and leaves the building
This was written by Larry Cordell and Larry Shell. It's basically a middle finger towards the bull s@#t. That comes on the radio today. Most country now is coming out of California. One of the greatest collaborations ever. They're both living legends
As a child of the 60's and 70's, I say the exact same thing every day. My daddy raised me on old country, and the outlaw country (Waylon). This crap they play on country radio now is just that... crap. It doesn't bother me that some of the acts today want to be country, but they need to be country. This pop country is killing REAL country music. George Jones. put a song out way way back called "Who's gonna fill their shoes".. and it tells you to what level country music has moved away from the old country, and no one will fill their shoes. There is also a song called "That ain't country".. you should give it a listen.. !!!
Think about the size of the bowling balls on these guys... not just singing that song... but singing it at a country music awards show about the music execs and artists that are guilty of killing country music.... and the possum is George Jones.
Listen to Kicked out of Country by George Strait. It takes this song to the next level and gives a certain finger to what is now considered country music. Spoiler alert its not a thumbs up LOL. I highly suggest that song.
I love y'alls reactions. I'd really like to see you react to I Wish Grandpas Never Died by Riley Green. I think its one y'all would like. One thing you said in your reaction to I Pray for You reminded me of it. You said people had told you that if it plays on country radio, it's country. And that relates to this video as well. But if you want to find out what Riley Green thinks about modern country, you'll have to check out I Wish Grandpas Never Died.
At one of the CMAs George Jones was told he would only have 1 minute to sing his song Choices. He stayed home instead. Alan Jackson was supposed to sing his song Pop a Top. He dud, for a line ir two, then he and his band switched to Choices. And walked off the stage. ❤️❤️❤️❤️ George was in tears at home. Alan is great!
My son and hubby won't even turn on a current "country" station. Just the oldies stations. I listen to both but then I grew up on my mama's OG country and my big brothers Southern rock and classic rock. I can't be mad about modern country being influenced by the other music I grew up loving. But it does make me mad when traditional country can't get played. I do listen mostly to a classic country station and a couple of classic rock stations and my Southern Rock playlists on Pandora cuz I do get tired of the hookup songs on New country radio.
The possum is the immortal George Jones. And one of his greatest songs that you haven't listened to yet is who's going to feel their shoes. George strait and Alan Jackson are both OG's picked my word for it. And the song was basically written because exactly wanted these two to do very poppy music and it just wasn't going to happen. Although I will recommend the fireman and All My exes live in Texas by George strait and Chattahoochee by Alan jackson. Great reaction guys I very much enjoyed this one.
This song was controversial back in the day. It pissed some of the 'new' country artists back in the day. But, it is so true. My name for the new stuff is watered-down country. But, I have to admit, I do listen to some of the new stuff.
My granddaughter was listening to some of the new "country" in my car, so I listened along. It seemed the song was very, very long. I finally asked if it was still the same song. Nope, but they all sounded that much alike!
Eric Upchurch made a good point in his "apology" video, while talking about the current state of the country music industry and their artists. Basically saying how they keep trying to rake everyone in, so much so that they lost their identity. Not everyone is going to like real country music.
It was based on a shooting on 16 Avenue on music row . Where two men was killed in 1989 on music row. They just got done recording music there. And yes they are killing country music. But the guy that had them killed was found guilty.
George Jones was the Possum. Thank you, George and Alan, for having the courage to stand up for traditional country music. I don't listen the the mish-mash of country, pop, rap, and whatever garbage that they've come up with these days.
There is an old joke that says if we knew Florida Georgia Line was coming along we wouldn't have give Rascal Flatts such a hard time.😂😂😂 Tim McGraw recorded a a response to this song called Things Change.
Alan Jackson was a subtle rebel. He was upset an award show was using a recording he had to lip sync to. So his drummer "played" without sticks. It was at the 1994 ACM awards and the song was "Gone Country" if you're want to see it
George Jones was the opossum. May he rest in peace. This song was sang that particular night because that was the first CMA award that George Jones was NOT welcome to perform. Jackson and Strait got pissed and let the award folks know how pissed off they were. I like to rock but I miss the old stuff, when you could feel the pure raw emotion sang in a song and yes, I was singing with and got told to. Shut UP!! Roommate is a Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin fan. Loved this song, loved your reactions 2 thumbs 👍 👍up! The bourbon/not bourbon; Beautiful color but I'm passing on this one. I'm allergic to strawberries and thus avoid anything that says "berries".
One of the most important songs for the traditionalists movement in country. I always direct my stupid Gen Z friends to this song if I catch them listening to fake country. The Possum (George Jones) is like the GOAT. "Still Doin' Time" is an awesome song of his. Great video as always, guys! Looking forward to future stuff. God bless - Everett
Yeah but if you think about it in a way Chris Stapleton leans towards the classic traditional country. He just had that soul of the South with him too. He's just extra special.
I'm more traditional and George is my all time favorite but right now I absolutely love Eric Church! Please listen to Eric Church "STICK THAT IN YOUR COUNTRY SONG "
Couple other songs that cover the same topic and are a little bit newer is Shooter Jennings "Put the O Back in Country" Hank III "Dick in Dixie" and Aaron Lewis "That Ain't Country"
One of the best parts is that they performed it in front of the artists and executives that were killing country.
It's hard to find country artists with balls like that today now that we're in the era of twerking Puke Bryan and his mom jeans.
But they were two of the best at the time in terms of revenue, so nobody was going to cancel them over it.
@@easyenetwork2023even if they tried to cancel them how are you gonna cancel the king of country

Yup Possum was George Jones. Guys, several comments here about George and Alan writing this. They did not. This was written by 2 great songwriters Larry Cordle and Larry Shell.
The first singer George Strait has over 60 hit songs. Alan Jackson with him has almost as many. George and Alan wrote this song together.
They created an awesome tune. - Keith
The song was originally written and recorded by Kentucky Native Larry Cordell. It is easy to Google it and find out.

And yes they are killing country music.
But the guy that had them killed was found guilty.
Radney Foster is good old country, "Went For A Ride" or "Old Silver".
George Jones was the Possum.
Thank you, George and Alan, for having the courage to stand up for traditional country music. I don't listen the the mish-mash of country, pop, rap, and whatever garbage that they've come up with these days.
❤❤❤❤❤
I like the new stuff but I do really miss the traditional country music my dad used to sing to me.
Fiddle/Violin are the same instrument.
Fiddle or Fiddling is a style of playing, or so I have been told.
George jones “whose gonna fill their shoes”
Back to the normal upload time.
Great reaction! Could you please react to Lee Ann Womack - I'll Think of a Reason Later? It's a pretty witty song, worth checking out.
I'm more traditional and George is my all time favorite but right now I absolutely love Eric Church! Please listen to Eric Church "STICK THAT IN YOUR COUNTRY SONG "
Check out Lefty Frizzel Long Black Vail
"Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes" by George Jones
Used to listen to this a lot.. Then I found out that it's a George Jones cover.
Possibly you enjoy older country because you can actually hear and understand the words.
The possum was George Jones
There are some newer artists that are bringing back old school country, examples. John Pardi and Midland.
Couple other songs that cover the same topic and are a little bit newer is Shooter Jennings "Put the O Back in Country" Hank III "Dick in Dixie" and Aaron Lewis "That Ain't Country"
