- We are back again with another incredible food forest to share with you from our visit to the panhandle a couple weekends ago. This time, we are visiting with Charles at his home to personally witness the legacy of a personal fruit tree collection he has acquired. We'll be showing off more bananas, blueberries, citrus, figs, persimmons, muscadine grapes & even avocados that are well adapted to occasional overnight freezing temps.

Hes done very well. The bad winter cold temps can hit 13f and the rains can hit 21 inches in a single storm like 2017 and then the hurricanes... This guy is a hard working genius to have done this good.

thanks for this series on north FL Pete, I was looking for ideas along the panhandle and as far west as Mobile
I have a fig tree that throws pups like crazy. And it produces the most figs for the longest time that I have seen. It has been a really easy rooster and I have given a lot of them away. If Mr Charles wants one I also live in 8b/9a in Silverhill Alabama. One tree has given me a gallon and a half everyother day for several months if you keep it picked off. It starts producing about the beginning of July till you get tired of picking it or it cools off. But I have picked it from June to Sept one year.
This gentleman is a serious worth of knowledge.
I'm afraid his knowledge may be lost.
It's incredible the variety and varieties he has!

I so want to plant my food forrest. Slowly I've been sprouting all my trees and bushes. Hopefully soon I will have what I have planted. I live about 35 miles from Pensacola so wish me luck. I got my greenhouse put up in the fall. So now I'm planting. Some in my greenhouse some outside in my yard.
Where do you source all these varieties?
That is very useful info about the Orinoco banana. Mine fell over the same way, and I did not realize that freeze in previous year had weakened it. Thanks.

This is the first of your videos that I've seen. I live about 45 minutes west of Tallahassee. I relish in the information provided here and would love to meet this guy and a few others you may have met in my area. It would be awesome to get a list of the growers you know in my area (anywhere within 3 hours drive) that have similar climates and see what they have going so that I may learn more about the possibilities and gain potential ideas for my own food forest. .. again. great video.. Interesting to hear the "plant deep" concept with avo's, wonder what you thought about that , Pete? Would LOVE to see a follow up on all those fig varieties. First time in any of these videos I've heard the planter say the plants were "'way too tight". It was hard to see all that bare ground from a perma standpoint.

Charles died not too long ago. I did not hear about it for a while so missed his funeral. I live not too far away from his place in Pace, FL. Just the other side of Escambia Bay and River.
wow...great video again...I took 2 of my pomegranate varieties out this yr...they don't need many chill hrs at all..they are low chill...the culprit out west here can be the leaf footed bug...I didn't have that issue this yr, but they are only a marginal fruit for me in enjoyment and they were taking up too much space.

a couple yrs...I also wanted to open up some walk space...I like a food forest but also like some minimal pathpay ;) and so does my gal & kids (I think they have "some" say ;) ;)
Charles place was great, he seemed very knowledgeable on what he was growing, . Love all the bananas i want to try to grow some bananas need to find a reliable place to purchase them from, do you think they would grow well in southern California? i need a banana tree in my life LOL ;) Be well!

How did that Pickering Mango do in the ground? I am in zone 8b North Central Panhandle area. Growing hardier citrus in ground and also have many potted tropical fruit trees that go in the greenhouse during winter.
Florida betony (Stachys floridana) has an edible root, which is delicious. Much like an old-world radish, but with a milder flavor that I prefer.

I'm glad that he is having success with bananas that far north. I just moved to Jacksonville from Palm Bay and I was worried that they wouldn't handle winter. Does anyone have any tips on frost covering bananas? I'm currently starting seeds of red bananas.
Thanks so much very nice vid. I am from Miami were bananas thrive and am looking foward to finding the types that can grow in Panama City. In regards to a very knowledgeable and large reservoir of variety of bananas in Homestead Fl. south of Miami just North of the Fl. keys is a nursery that specializes in bananas named "Going Banana" the have (back about 10 year ago) around 70 or 80 varieties of bananas. I have contacted them and they don't have the need, so they really don't know about too much as to which variety does well in NW florida. but they might be a resource in regards to getting bananas tress that are geneticaly speaking "such and such" variety.
Good luch with that mango :) your a better man than I in trying to grow it up this far north. but a mango rippend on the tree is insanely good.'
there is a Miami Dade county park called "fruit and spice park" 60 or 80 acres which has a gift shop full of books I have gotten good info from both. Trying to learn about what grows in this area since hurican gave my 1 acre a buzz cut and have nice open lot for fruit trees...

Mulch mulch mulch so I've learned fr Pete's videos lol I moved here last year from St Louis area and it's been a learning curve. It's so easy when the soil is black and fertile. I'd love to hear how you've done.

Yep. Wonderful grows like a weed here even with just natural rainfall. Can't grow bananas to save our lives though. Ha!

I wonder if those squirrels are using those banana leaves for nesting material?
I live in Brazil and I'm starting my edible garden. I can only grow tropical and subtropical plants. In my city we never get temperatures under 10°C. In full Summer we can get to 42°C (hellish hot).

Pete Kanaris GreenDreamsFL I just watched the video and it's really life changing. I've read a lot abou Fazenda da Toca and I truly admire Mr. Diniz because he put Itirapina on the map of environment preservation. Also, his organig produce are well known in all the country. My grandma had a small farm. Part of the land was to traditional agriculture, and part was to organic syntropic production (we didn't know this name back then). There were fruit trees, medicinal plants, wood, bamboo, vegetables, cattle, pigs, a stream with fish, chickens, corn and pineapples. Unfortunately she sold the land years ago. I am using my own backyard as a classroom so I can learn something before I can start a homestead in the small land my husband bought last year. This video really opened my eyes. It is possible!

We did reach 13 degrees last winter 😬 BUT or coldest bursts are usually only a few nights. My grandma has to wrap her citrus tree in a giant Afghan and has been known to put a light on it for extra heat the few ridiculously cold nights we get
