The sound is beautiful but heartbreaking because it underlines the epochal change. In the eighteenth century there was no space travel. In my opinion this song by Pink Floyd is a man's song of pain, who understands that he is alone in space.
Brilliant perception, yours, sir. But "two eras" and "Instruments of its age" is curious. See Floyd played it on piano and guitar (slide) which are timeless instruments; im sure you know what I mean. Then the vocal composition is richly comprised of classical elements. So it's not really far-fetched an idea to imagine it with yet another timeless instrument, violin. [BTW appreciate the way he didn't play the higher notes in the intro as in the original. He saved them all for the vocals.]
