The bass at 22:00 has such a funky sound to it. PF really knew how to play and incorporate many music styles to form their unique sound. To me, that is one of the most important reasons as to why they were an incredibly well respected, even though they weren't as well recognized as they should have been. It was a very special talent that all members (Roger, Nick, Gilmour, Rick Wright, and Syd Barrett) possessed that made their career have many phases through which they developed and changed their sound. It makes it very interesting to see the transition of their sound throughout the years. All of this is yet another reason why PF will always be regarded as one of the most groundbreaking and revolutionary groups in the history of music.
Thanks for the info, had no clue. Makes sense considering how capable Rick was in producing unique sounds and wonderful rhythms to give the music an extra layer.
It's a clavinet - a 70s synthesizer that was meant to replicate the sound of a harpsichord - played low. It was used on loads of Stevie Wonder records in the mid 70s. There's also bass guitar in that section but playing deeper and far fewer notes.
What is so great is that they ignored the music of their time and pulled from old jazz, and waltzes and blues from decades earlier along with adding their own ambient sound. Dare to be different and it worked!
Nick's drumming comes through beautifully clearly. His cymbals are so crisp. I love his playing towards the end with all the fills and kick drum syncopations.
I’ve been a fan since the turntable needle dropped on Ummagumma. It happens to all of us. Something inside of us resonates when we listen to music. Some like PF, some heavy metal, others it’s folk. For me it was the long, drawn out songs of PF: Saucerful, Set the Controls, Careful, Echoes. Heady stuff. Thanks for posting this.
I'm a fan of all of the above. I always set myself the challenge of looking for the longest version of a song I can find, and PF always do it sooo sooo well...
Oh man, I love jamming with my guitar whenI hear long drawn out jams of Pink Floyd. Many of their songs are fantastic to learn lead guitar and improvise to them. "Breath" is probably the best one but dam is it short. Breath is very emotional on the guitar. I am going to jam to this one and never heard it so long.
Big time. David and Richard were a big help but I remember Roger indicating that he had spent hours and hours overdubbing original backing vocals - I believe it. His pitch wasn't as good after this record - years of smoking took its toll on his singing but his voice is so distinctive (indeed and David and Richard) you could pick out their individual lines if you listen closely on this one.
@@aliensporebomb He is admittedly tone-deaf, which makes playing bass hard enough (why he always plays those mean sounding octaves and why Gilmour played the complex bass bits) but having to sing on a recording... still, somehow he made his voice fit as a counter to Gilmours voice incredibly well.

Wow! This is really great. It let's us know now how they envisioned the song as one piece -- an epic structure like Echoes. The final release is supreme, my favorite album of all time. There never was a better version of the studio-centric "Welcome to the Machine" than the original release. No live version ever did it justice.

Fantastic. From 19.23 onwards should be put on a loop, it is so cool. Been a Floyd fan since I heard DSOTM for the first time when it came out in 1973.
I like how it sounds kinda like one take. In the album version, some parts fade into one another like there were no correlation, with fade out/fade in, but here you can hear how the changes are made and how they'd play it "live", without effects or anything, just the band's playing
The thing about Floyd is just the sheer attention to detail. There's a video out there of Gilmour at a mixing session for "Take A Breath". Him and Guthrie spend a good 10 minutes on one word of one vocal to make sure it sounds just perfect in the mix. That level of craftsmanship is the reason Floyd are so good. They took simple ideas and developed it and refined it over, and over, and over, until it was just the way they wanted it. And EMI deserve massive credit for giving them studio time to do it (in some cases, a full year of studio time).
I think Pink Floyd as a band were very underrated because they avoided unnecessary attention and media time. Compare to for example, Rolling Stones. They decided to stay that way and even in concerts most of the time they had video screen with videos playing in background
İt's a certainly awesomness like clarity swear excellente so praying involved I would like to congratulate you for a musical group work that is based on its integrity..And world-renowned and well-known naming enabled Pink Floyd save me again..
AstroSloth Gilmour did play bass on some songs (One of These Days for instance, in duo with Roger, or Pigs in solo), but on the vast majority of Pink Floyd songs it's Roger playing. He was actually a very competent bass player, just listen to the live versions to hear it (I especially recommend the Animal Instincts bootleg from 1977)
No he didn't. Here's the list of all the PF songs he played bass on, in chronological order: The Narrow Way pts. 1-3 Fat Old Sun One Of These Days Shine On You Crazy Diamond (pt. VI) Pigs (Three Different Ones) Sheep Comfortably Numb Don't Leave Me Now Goodbye Blue Sky Hey You Mother Nobody Home The Show Must Go On The Trial Waiting For The Worms Young Lust Money (A Collection of Great Dance Songs) High Hopes Wearing The Inside Out As you can see, that's not "most" of PF songs. (Source: www.pinkfloydonline.com/forums/showthread.php?tid=16000)
lptomtom I agree that Roger is a good bassist; he's got his own special touch, and Pink Floyd are lacking a lot without him. That's why Live 8 was such an awesome little gig. However, I should mention that on the _Animals_ tour (called _In the Flesh_), Roger played rhythm guitar on "Pigs" and "Sheep" while Snowy White played bass. Roger did play bass on "Dogs", live and in studio, and did a fine job of it. I think Roger and Nick once made a great rhythm section, but they kinda lost something when they quit doing swing/shuffle style circa _Animals._ (It's still my favorite PF album, though.)
Never heard this version till now. Thanks for uploading. Amazing how much free music is on You Tube and with my addblocker I get not one stupid add! Fk yeah!

Outstanding. Nothing earthshakingly different and as usual, the The Floyd got it right in the end, but very interesting to see them working. Obviously before Gilmour added the Syd Barrett-like multi-tracked guitar madness midway through Part 6, which I find to be genius !

From a magazine interview i read once of Phil Taylor, he explained this photo as being when Dave recorded the Shine On intro. The reason he's standing right there, is that it was done with the lights off, so he was there to help with any adjustments or lol i could imagine to even just keep the cables from tripping him. Leslie organ amp to the far right right ;)
David ran his guitar through Leslies to give it a more swimmingly ethereal sound. That first chord in Shine On with the four ringing notes it's so evocative and that big room made the sound just huge.
Richard Wright is an underrated musician. He is brilliant! He always set those keyboard tones to begin with

İt's a certainly awesomness like clarity swear excellente so praying involved I would like to congratulate you for a musical group work that is based on its integrity..And world-renowned and well-known naming enabled Pink Floyd save me again..
This version really portrays the music in a coating of sorrow.
Nice early studio working version!
Rogers on fire... the bass is very good !
I read in an interview with Gilmour where he stated the majority of the bass on the records was actually him playing.
AstroSloth
Gilmour did play bass on some songs (One of These Days for instance, in duo with Roger, or Pigs in solo), but on the vast majority of Pink Floyd songs it's Roger playing. He was actually a very competent bass player, just listen to the live versions to hear it (I especially recommend the Animal Instincts bootleg from 1977)
lptomtom You are wrong. David did play bass on most of the songs.
No he didn't. Here's the list of all the PF songs he played bass on, in chronological order:
The Narrow Way pts. 1-3
Fat Old Sun
One Of These Days
Shine On You Crazy Diamond (pt. VI)
Pigs (Three Different Ones)
Sheep
Comfortably Numb
Don't Leave Me Now
Goodbye Blue Sky
Hey You
Mother
Nobody Home
The Show Must Go On
The Trial
Waiting For The Worms
Young Lust
Money (A Collection of Great Dance Songs)
High Hopes
Wearing The Inside Out
As you can see, that's not "most" of PF songs.

lptomtom I agree that Roger is a good bassist; he's got his own special touch, and Pink Floyd are lacking a lot without him.
This is GORGEOUS. Thank you for posting it!
Thanks, fabulous, good time for you
One of my favourite songs
Never heard this version till now. Thanks for uploading. Amazing how much free music is on You Tube and with my addblocker I get not one stupid add! Fk yeah!
How many amazing songs came out of that room?
Genius! As usual! Thanks for the upload! Love to hear more!
This is superb!!!! Thank you!
È come guardare tra le stelle e ascoltare il suono dell universo .
Pian piano si materializzano ma tu sai che loro sono avanti anni luce rispetto a tutti❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
WowWowWow, I'd call this the ultimate UrShineOn. Tremendous
Greatest moment is from
0:00 to 25:16
Damn, that piano accompanying the bass in Part 6 is so great 😮 I've never noticed it in the final recording
@lptomtom
thank you for sharing this 🙏🏼
My all time favorite song
Very Ironic what time the clock is reading in the background for this recording. perhaps a coinsidence? or perhaps the real truth?
3 yrs later! could be intentional by subliminal process or coincidental! IMO subliminal! 420 helped with the bands creativity along with other stuff...
.... good eye burninginlove84... I was too wrapped up in the recording with my eyes wide shut!
It's photoshoped.
All of the Pink Floyd members have used drugs
@@andvgeo2253 If you read Nicholas Schaffner's "Saucerful of Secrets" you'll find some of them were more drinkers than smokers.
Thanks for uploading. Doesn't get any better than this.
Outstanding. Nothing earthshakingly different and as usual, the The Floyd got it right in the end, but very interesting to see them working. Obviously before Gilmour added the Syd Barrett-like multi-tracked guitar madness midway through Part 6, which I find to be genius !

מה...קרה..? לאן...נעלמת ???
Remember when you were young?
You shone like the sun
Shine on, you crazy diamond
Now there's a look in your eyes
Like black holes in the sky
Shine on, you crazy diamond
You were caught in the crossfire
Of childhood and stardom
Blown on, the steel breeze
Come on, you target for faraway laughter
Come on, you stranger, you legend
You martyr, and shine!
You reached for the secret too soon
You cried for the moon
Shine on you crazy diamond
Threatened by shadows at night
And exposed to the light
Shine on you crazy diamond
Well you wore out your welcome
With random precision
Rode on the steel breeze
Come on, you raver, you seer of visions
Come on, you painter, you piper
You prisoner, and shine!
Nobody knows where you are
How near or how far
Shine on, you crazy diamond
Pile on many more layers
And I'll be joining you there
Shine on, you crazy diamond
And we'll bask in the shadow
Of yesterday's triumph
And sail on the steel breeze
Come on, you boy child, you winner and loser
Come on, you miner for truth and delusion
And shine
Absolut mega geil !
What a great version.
Dainese aldo
The bestest band on universe... many light years from our time.....
Some of the vocals, guitars and synths were re-recorded for the final version, but not all of them -- it's fun trying to recognize which.
yes, indeed!
Love this version.
