    Great info., so clear. Everything worked perfectly in my home, until a 3 years ago, by which time the house was 9 years old. You talked about a drip edge and I was going, "But I don't have a drip edge." You then mentioned how to take care of water dripping behind the gutter if there was no drip edge. Thank you. I think I need to get some gutter pros in to fix all the loose screws and re-caulk the joints. See what issues I still have and then deal with them accordingly. Thank you, the cut away section of the roof w/gutter is better than any other explanation.

    A little history on drip edge. It was designed for use on the rakes of houses back in the early 70s when everyone started using aluminum fascia to cover the wood sub surfaces. This was to cover the fastening nails and keep the wind from blowing the trim metal off. When the shingle manufacturer's started going to fiberglass their was reduced rigidity at the gutter board line and the shingles would droop over into the gutter. Everyone then started using drip edge to get rid of that problem. Here's where everyone makes the big mistake. When you put a new roof on you should install ice shield 3" down and over the gutter board then your drip edge. In northern area's with snow and ice you should install a bead of modified roof cement under the drip edge before you nail it in place and then another 6" strip of ice shield over the drip and onto the ice shield. Make sure that you install the shingle starter at least 3/4" past the drip or the water will wick back to the gutter board vertical face. I used to see a lot of people get their houses resided with aluminum siding and the installers would tuck a short fascia piece up under the gutter and when the rains leaked up top behind the gutter it would rot out the gutter board. Ideally you want ice shield to cover the fascia metal top edge by 2-3".

      Appreciate this! I don’t feel as bad not being able to quickly fix my own problem. I’m in northern Ohio and I’m doubting all you mentioned was done properly to my home. It was build pretty cheaply in 1974 😅

    I had someone come out and look at my roof and gutters to explain to me why the water (as i observed) was pooling in one area at the edge of the roof, causing the water to drip through/down the overhang of the house. They said everything was fine....not!! You were able to explain it to me. I'm thinking the gutters do need to be adjusted.. (crossing fingers) Now to get someone to fix it! Thanks so much!!!

    I did replace a very long gutter 30 ft plus me & a buddy on our bi level years ago. I have been noticing for years with heavy rain water coming behind drip edge on right side only by bay window. We did use hidden hangers with screws. All new trim with soffits. I am thinking like you stated pulling out drip edge to see if that makes a difference. Thank you great video.

    Chris thank you for the video ! My gutter installer is claiming the water coming behind my gutter is my roof fault and not anything they did. I am trying to have them come out to reinspect their installation. They are saying I might have cracked Tile that water is getting under the drip edge and it’s no fault to them. How can I have them inspect their install to make sure it’s not something gone wrong with their installation ?? Please help!! I also have a video to show where the water is coming that I could share with you.

    Shouldn't the gutter be installed behind the drip edge? I know that when you have a long run of gutter that the low end will hang below the drip edge but shouldn't the high end of the gutter be under the drip edge?

    Hi Thank you for this great information ! I have leaves sticking out of the bottom of my gutters on the back side of the gutter next to my home. Do you think it might be due to a drip edge or loose gutter problem ?

  • @DineshPatel-zw8ny

    Tile roof, new gutters, dripping between the gutter and fascia. They’re saying that the drip edge sealer is gone so that the water is getting behind the drip edge as the sealer is gone! Asking for lots of money to fix!
    Caulking between the fascia and gutter will fix it?

    Hi, I’m in the UK and rain is leaking down my chimney wall when it rains. I have a log burner fire so you can see the rain dripping down the wall at the back. Two roofers have said it isn’t the chimney and can’t see any slate problems but I think it might be the gutter pouring water back into the house. Please can you help.

    The captions concealed what you were holding up. Hate when that happens...
    Question,
    Metal roof, drip edge, no gutters. We get too much snow that would tear them off. Not gonna deal with heat tape in gutters to help melt it.
    My drip edge bottom is too tight against fascia, water just runs down the fascia instead of the lip on the bottom breaking surface tension and sucking it back against fascia.
    I used a robust putty knife to try to pry the drip edge away, didn't really work.
    Suggestions appreciated!

    I have both problems. Water drips inside soffit and started dripping through ceiling in hallway. Also, water drips behind fascia. It’s so frustrating because we had foundation issues with a contractor who ripped us off. We are so tired of having water be a problem one way or another. I need to fix it so water doesn’t drip in the soffit and behind the fascia.

    I’m seeing water in certain places pooling behind the soffit and coming down behind the gutter. I have videos of this. I had an “expert” come look at the issue and they said to install a piece of metal along the problem areas that’s bent upward so the water comes out to the gutter, but with it coming behind the soffit, I’m concerned that won’t fix the issue. (There is a drip edge already installed). Can I send you video?

    Would a gutter guard also stop the water from going behind the gutter? I dont believe I have a drip edge but also get alot of debris from the nearby trees.

    had a spash guard put at bottom of valley and now water is getting into covered porch soffit, when the splash guard is not there no water gets into that covered porch soffit, so I know that splash guard is causing the water to splash back up under that drip edge, how does that get fixed?

    Pretty good video tho👍🏼---touches on all the usual culprits, even the gutter guard thing, which is a very real design flaw, I think, of some of the standard (not custom) guards available at the hardware stores.🤪

    Great vids, thanks. So, my q, what about the corners. Drip edge is wrapped tight around the house, but the gutter will stick out about 1/2” or so past where the drip edge makes a 90 degree turn. You can’t pull that part of the edge out, just cut a slit in the gutter and slide under?

      Exact same problem I’m having. I inspected the whole roof. Found a few loose shingles. Tarred the hell out of them. Didn’t fix the problem. I’m assuming water is backtracking along the bottom of one of the shingles. I’m going to pour some water slowly and see what it does. Then probably hit the bottom of the shingles where they meet the drip guard with a bead of tar.

    I had gutter screens installed last fall. I have one area where water drips behind the gutter, but during a torrential rain yesterday one section of gutter had water rushing over the top of it like a waterfall. Not sure what caused that unless there was just too much rain for my downspout to handle. This area is right before a 90 degree turn that heads toward the downspout. I'm wondering why this happened.

    • @dustinphilyaw3892
      @dustinphilyaw3892 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the industry we know gutters don’t really stop a torrential downpour. But your issue could be leaves or pine needles trapped in filter holes you could try to sweep them off from the ground if you don’t have a ladder

    My house has vinyl gutters, with a ONE INCH GAP between the fascia and the back of the gutter. Other than extreme bending outward of the drip edge, is there some way to keep water from going behind the gutter? I'm looking at roll flashing, but not sure how well it will work.

      This might be not the best news but I would replace those gutters ASAP. I recommend you get a seamless 6k style gutter with, “gutter edge” and a gutter guard if any trees within 100yards. Any local gutter pro should be able to complete this. If doing a DIY just go here: gutteredge.com

    Would like to know if you've actually installed roofing. A model is great, but being up on an actual roof on a ladder to illustrate your points would go a long way to improving the presentation. Had to fast forward to get through to the point [there was a point?].

    Hi mate having a problem with my ceiling in the bedroom where the window is I have got a damp wet patch above the ceiling got few roofers out they go there's Notting wrong with roof tiles and they can't find the leak. Would you have any idea where it might be coming from.

  • @slydog7131
    @slydog7131 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The water could be following around the bottom of the shingle and then be wicked back up the roof under the shingle and above the drip edge. Indeed if all the water dripped off the shingle and then down the drip edge that wouldn't happen, but if it makes it to the point wher ethe shingles and the drip edge meet, it can get wicked from there up between the drip edge and the shingle. That's what capillary action does. The drip edge won't solve a slow leak caused by that. Ice and Water Shield applied over the drip edge and up the deck a ways should prevent such wicking from becoming a problem.

    Good stuff here..I have oversize eaves, and the first foot of roof decking at the edge of roof is gone or rotted...drip edge needs replacing, but nothing to nail a new one onto.. fascia board was rotted, and I replaced it...what should I do? A roofing and gutter contractor said over the phone they would put a whole new roof on, and new gutters, as corners all leak..not doable for me. What should I do next? Thanks

    • @Everythinggutter
      @Everythinggutter  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately needs to be replaced, Highly recommend ASAP. With that said you could use capping to cover some of the rotted wood. If you do not have a break to bend aluminum then contact a siding contractor to purchase 2"X10"X10' as many as needed. This will cover some of the rotted roof decking and give you a 2" drip edge until you are able to fix if right. For the leaky corners they simply need to be resealed. Search my channel on how to seal a leaky seam professionally, Hope this helps:)

      @@Everythinggutter Thanks so much! But what is capping you mentioned in the reply? I replaced the fasia board with a 2 by six treated board..so the 2 by 10 x 10 ft you are talking about is aluminum flashing with a bend at the 2 inch mark...the 10 inch side slides under the shingles to cover rotted decking? thanks! I did carefully remove some edge shingles on top of the rotted decking, so i may try to put new decking on...weather is still good here in Illinois...so far.
