I adore Alice Walker. Her writings have kept me sane in an insane world.

Life is not easy and tackling your own truth is difficult. I know Alice and her daughter, and I wish the commenters below who are so angry would step back and respect being transparent and human. Politics is personal.

This is the reason as to why Alica Walker says she doesn't entertain feedback, everyone is out here judging her .

In regards to her grandson and the glaring obvious, she side steps the emotional question by posturing with euphemism. With great respect for her, i must say that it seems the only way her daughter can gain any notoriety for herself, is to reject her mother? Certain there is a story between them, but that story needs addressing and healing, at least for the sake of the 3rd generation.

So she's a bad mother for being able to focus on the children outside of her immediate family for the benefit of the community for generations to come? I'm sure Rebecca Walker is simply distraught at the hands of her selflessness huh?

Her ex partner, Tracy Chapman. As told by herself, TC never talked to her since broke up.

What her mom said about only wanting 6 kids instead of 8 was so mean and hurtful. I think she subconsciously wanted to hurt her daughter how she was hurt herself.

I love Alice, but that presenter always seems a bit rough to me. A posh little rich girl who parties way too hard. Thats great for interviewing rock stars, but Alice deserves a finer interviewer

If only she spent time with her daughter and grandson like she spent time with her chickens. This woman is truly aloof.
I don't understand her stance in which feels she has to be a mother to the world. Also, what "culture" is she talking about in which she has maternal obligations to? Simultaneously forsaking her daughter's most basic needs in having a loving mother. "Charity begins at home, then it spreads abroad." She wants to save the planet (how pompous), but she's not concerned with salvaging a relationship with her daughter. Well I guess the grandson can have a grandmother, provided he gets on his bike and comes to see her majesty.

inquizative44 ... We really don't know the situation with those two. The relationship between Mother & Daughter can be pretty rocky. It is what it is. I'm sure they'll work it out ... or maybe not. That's life.

+inquizative44 It's called Black culture, Alice grew up in the deep south in a larger Black family, the communities in these families often had the women keeping their own families together but also being the backbone of their communities. Harriet Tubman and Rosie Parks displayed the same sense of maternal obligation to their communites. It is not about "saving the planet" it is having a deep respect for other human beings and not just the ones made from your flesh and blood. Another great Black Writer that gave insight into this was Maya Angelou in her book "I know why the caged bird sings" she biographically accounts her early childhood years of growing up in Stamp, Arkansas with her Grandma and then later going to live with her mother in San Francisco and she reflects on both women and their maternal connections not just limited to their own children but to their extended families and communities around them. My cultures shares much of the same dynamics.

Yes all of this global, cosmopolitan "maternalism," is wonderful. It just seems hypocritical to me. Especially after reading her daughters article and her personal response to her own grandson. I'm just not buying it.

inquizative44 You mean you read one article and made your mind up from that, without knowing anything else? If I want to enjoy a Bob Marley song can't I do that without questioning his fathering skills? The man spoke of revolution, of love and peace and stood for humanity etc however in his personal life he had so many problems, to me that is human nature. It's hypocritical to me to judge someone who has given great things to humanity without first taking a good hard look at oneself.

I used to really admire this lady until I read her daughters story about her... OMG!!! This lady is a total hypocrite!.... She was a totally selfish deadbeat mother... Totally treated her daughter like crap her entire life up until now.... It was really quite hurtful to read... But it's obviously true.... I see her now as a monster....

She skirts the issue, wish it was me interviewing her. She avoided addressing any regrets she had about raising her daughter. Clearly there are issues. and I am sure she has more than one or two. Sad she doesn't speak to her daughter..its quite a taint on her legacy.

I find it unbearable for people to lay claims on truth. Also, while I like Alice Walker's works, I find her stance on Israel absolutely unacceptable. She doesn't have a sensible political bone in her body. This same woman worships Fidel Castro. She has a lot of explaining to do.
