    ABOUT US
    Hi! We are high school sweethearts from Atlanta, Georgia who decided to take a year off to travel around the world. Together we decided to create vlogs for our journey as a fun way to remember it. On September 15, 2019, we left Atlanta with 3 bags, 2 one-way tickets, and 1 goal of traveling for a whole year. Little did we know, 6 months later we would find ourselves in a nationwide lockdown in India. After spending 5 months in India, we came back to the United States and decided to purchase a 34’ Trawler, dive headfirst into boat life, and kick-off America’s Great Loop.
    The good, the bad, the ugly - and most importantly, the real and real funny. We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.”, just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you - the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem.
    Thank you for following us along our journey!

    I really enjoyed this one. Showing the boat ahead of you while transiting the locks helped capture the scope of everything. This is the best I've seen since researching and starting my solo transit of the New York Canal System.
    I copy/pasted the following to clarify the length of the Erie Canal including other sections of the NY canal system.
    "The Erie Canal is 339 miles long from Waterford (Albany) to Tonawanda (Buffalo). Including its laterals, the Champlain, Oswego, and Cayuga-Seneca Canals, the entire system mileage equals 524."

    We did the Erie going East so the flight of Five was down, which is usually calmer than go8ing up. We did the entire Erie in a single-diesel 35-footer with bow thruster, and there were some stressful times in locks when the wind and current pulled us into or off locks walls. We used big, round fenders for the locks and they were a Godsend.

    • @SchoandJo

    Great video. You gave the viewer atouch of the size and scope of the lock system and small your boat seems. The scenery was real well presented and the problem jet ski's can be. The canal system gives us all a glimpse of how things were brought cross country, Enjoy

    I really like the idea of using dish washing gloves. Thanks to Andy and Gwen telling you about them. The best point is that they can easily be washed when you're doing dishes. (After you've completed dishes). They would be great in the cold or rain by putting on regular gloves then putting the Playtex on. I'll have to add this to my boat supply list. PS: I hope you'll continue to vlog and stay in boating after you complete this trip. So many other cruisers drop off line. I know it might be one of many goals in life. Well...wait until y'all get to the Jamie Whitten Lock on the Tenn-Tom - it's only about 85 feet deep, 600 feet long and 110 feet wide. I was going north and when the lock doors opened to let southbound traffic out my first thought was 'damn...I've never seen anything like this.' I'd done locks before but not one as big as that lock - that was a 'holy cow' experience with the only saving grace being the floating bollards. The Erie Canal is an amazing experience in it's own right. Enjoying the videos - thanks for sharing! Safe travels. Cheers...

    I just caught your channel I trivial the flight a lot . My boat club is west of loc 6. You went by it in the video. The boat club is the Crescent Boat Club. Why did you not use the cables in the locks? They are the easiest to use, Take your Bow line and Stern line bring them to your center cleat sending your lines around the cable then tie off. Then it takes only one person to keep fast to the lock wall.

    Very cool how the locks are and how to go through them like that! I was trying to figure out your route but your last Nebo location vs these videos are way behind where you likely are. I am seeing on the news how bad the Mississippi is now with very low water levels, so curios your route down the waterways and where you will end up when finished? Really wish I can find your location on Nebo again....I love studying the route how this all works. Wondering if some day I might take a trip like this myself......

    • @SchoandJo
      @SchoandJo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We'd highly recommend taking the trip if you are ever able, the entire trip is one big learning experience and their are just so many great memories so far. The Mississippi being low didn't affect Loopers too much, we are normally only on the M. for a few days and typically just one of those is anchoring. The channel is plenty deep, 20-30 feet or more! Cheers!

    Hopefully you took in the Rideau Canal built in 1832 in Canada and or the Trent Severn Waterway where you get to experience the Peterborough Lift Lock, literally a tub that rises and the Port Severn marine railway where your boat is mounted on a rail cae in the water and lifted up a mountain and back down into Georgian Bay that connects to the North Passage to Mackinac Island at the North end of Lake Michigan and then on the Mississipi.

      I was wondering because I'm going to try to do the loop next year. I waited to late to get a start this year. I follow several looper videos and I'm learning from each and every one of you. Thank you your great videos

      You may be iced in for the Great Lakes but at least you can watch our videos to remember what it was like in season!

    I recall asking you guys before about height restrictions for boats navigating The Erie Canal. Are there any maximum beam restrictions?

    • @SchoandJo
      @SchoandJo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you'd hit the height or depth before you had to worry about beam, our friends in a 23ft beam catamaran did it if that helps 😁

    • @The442nd
      @The442nd 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SchoandJo You guys are the best!!! The catamaran I'm saving up for is at 24.9 feet of beam. It's been confirmed that 15 feet of air draft is the max if I want to navigate through the Erie Canal. Thanks again for your response. My wife is in love with your cute dog. Safe travels
