Back in 1969 I went to US Navy boot camp in great lakes Illinois. I think it was close to Chicago. in August. I spent 12 weeks in that piece of land and by September We were marching in heavy winter blue uniforms and P coats. Your friend wasn't lying when he said it's cold there in September.
We were lucky enough to get a free tie-up with power every night while transiting the erie canal. I wish I could have watched this video series before we did our crossing. We made a video series as well, but yours is better 😊
Hey guys…I’m sure your series is awesome…. We didn’t do much research into the free walls, coz we can’t use your power anyhow! We’re 230v….and batteries are most definitely full every day!
I was coming to see if someone else caught that! The canal has locks to raise and lower boats/ships over the land that separates the two oceans. They chose Panama because it was the shortest point between the two oceans.
@@SailingLifeonJupiter Jamie, 20 cm over 50 miles (length of Panama Canal) is nothing. Barely a slope. The purpose of the lock is still get boats up and over the land. Cheers
@@marceld6061 If the two oceans actually were at different heights on average enough to require locks, then you could make a syphon pipe across Panama, run it through a turbine and generate electricity!!
You had trouble understanding the Lock master at E6, he's a Jamaican, as a Jamaican myself I immediately picked up the accent, nice guy ... he gave your wife a lovely bouquet of flowers..
What a sweet fella!! I understood him... He said "oh, it's your 1st time thru! You get a gift!!" An proceeds to give the most beautiful flowers an information for the area an lock!! I had the most fun when I sailed to Jamaica.. a cab driver took me too all his favorite place to eat an hang out.... He was rite... Food was outstanding an the ppl were kind an generous.... Didn't want to leave... That's the life of a sailor... Pick up anchor an blow to next spot.... Wish you the best Sir... I send Big Love from my heart✌🏼💗😊❣️
I wish I had watch this 3 days ago: Lock 1 was a breeze until lock 2. I almost seriously damaged the boat because I didn't know how / where to tie the boat. This was largely my fault for inadequate research, but also the lock master's who never tried to guide me after I told me I had never done this before. He let me figure out the hard way. Very unprofesionel, and very dangerous for us and the boat.
Wow remarkable engeneering Back in them days they never had Half the Equipment were got today Nothing like that here , except Mabye Glenelg In SA We Used too go sailing In my mates boat and too get out Side Ya had too go through a lock , Then I suppose theres the Murry too , so yeah Nice trip
I grew up in St. Catharines Ontario with the Welland Canal. The locks there are large and high built for the laker ships like those of the Panama Canal and are the ones that pass by you on Lake Erie. .. Cheers to you ..
Atlantic and Pacific are not at different heights - they are both at sea level. The Panama Canal locks take you up to the central lake and then back down to the other ocean on the other side.
Was going to reply about the tides being different based on how you don't enter and exit at the exact same time of day and that the tidal heights are different based on how the inlets are set.... but I see Jupiter answered before me. :/
really enjoy this ..i live on lake erie in erie pa. sry u will miss our tall ship fest..its beautiful..would havereally like to have met u both...fair winds n sunshine..hope u got 2 c the falls...
Here is what I remember my teachers saying about the Erie Canal “ they built a canal to transfer goods” that was it…then something about oil…enjoying the ride and education…how does one get a ride on the route you took? Any crew sign ups or pay for vessels?
What do you suggest Jim? We can’t really dump our story line….and ain’t no way we are doing double the vids…..it is what it is Jim…..still a story and info….regardless of the date.
i pray you did not fish? The depths you speak of, add another 12 - 25 metres! Why? Those were the depths of the original waters but hey, a century of dumping garbage into the waters has had its effect.
A pretty calm episode. The only drama being a lock master who pulled up some weeds, and tried to pass them off as flirting flowers! hahaha
Hahaha maybe you’re right.🤣
Thank you for another great episode, I'm going through a stressful divorce and watching your video's is one of my happy places ☺☺
Glad to help out Geoffrey…good luck with it.

We managed to dodge the worst of it Joe.

3:45 Think you'll find the Atlantic and Pacific are at sea level, the Panama canal is 85 foot higher

Have a google Ray…it seems they are different by about 20cm…also a significant tidal change.

Love your music choices in these vids. 😊😎

Ah really….shame we didn’t see that part of the loop…
Great job describing your journey thru the lock system-it was enlightening and very interesting!
Glad you enjoyed thanks Mike
I really enjoyed this episode... Thanks for sharing your lives with us!! Fare winds and following sea's guy's ✌🏼💗😊❣️
Thanks Donna

Not sure about that Charles…check out these articles .. www.yourpanama.com/panama-canal.html

The tie-up? It wasn't luck >>>> it is s k i l l LOL
Absolutely.
Great video team - very informative

Would love to learn more about how you read your down vision sonar, the differences looked pretty subtle.
Yes true Mark….it is subtle…the texture of the bottom is a bit more course for the river rocks and finer grained for mud….learned from experience!
It is an amazing canal system. A little tough in spots with a 7 ft. draft.🤣🤣🤣 Don't ask how I know.
Ooo, yeah I reckon it would be!
Called a flow gate
I believe the Pacific and the Atlantis...well all the seven seas are at sea level
Do you think a Solar 80 cat can do that loop im thinking its to tall.
Here is what I remember my teachers saying about the Erie Canal “ they built a canal to transfer goods” that was it…then something about oil…enjoying the ride and education…how does one get a ride on the route you took? Any crew sign ups or pay for vessels?
We didn’t see many other sailing boats…but plenty of power boats going thru….there’s a "loopers association"… they might know of sign ups for crew.
LOL. You really want to bury it deep into a soft bottom TM.
Did you surf Mohawk river?
Didn’t see much white water there Nico!
Oxen and then show a picture of mule's??
yes they were mules that pulled those boats n bardges
Sorry Milko…Wiki told me one thing, and the images showed another….I’m just a dumb sailor
😅❤
Cheers
Wrong the body of water are at the same level at both ends, but the water levels in between are higher levels. Hence locks needed
Have a google Latitude…apparently it is different…and the tides are way different.
according to this video, you are some 10 months behind! Two months, okay but 10? Jamie????
What do you suggest Jim? We can’t really dump our story line….and ain’t no way we are doing double the vids…..it is what it is Jim…..still a story and info….regardless of the date.
are your your hulls scratch free
Yes Fred…no damage done

Nah Jim, we weren’t prepared to buy fishing licenses for every state, so we didn’t bother.
