I just got this wax for a 90's Jackson Kelly mij guitar. The guitar was damaged in a flood we had, so the finish was trashed. I stripped the paint off and did a natural wood finish with tung Oil, also rewired it and put a sick pair of Duncan Invaders in it. The finish came out great, this will make it even better. My uncle also just built a ukulele and did a tung Oil and this wax, came out great and highly recommends it.
For steel wool you can use a magnet wraped in paper in the hand holding the steelwool. You can also clean it afterward with just the magnet (a "sacifical" one, also)
Amazing, i wire wool all my oil finishes to a nice flat satin-ish look and finally use a polishing compound but now i've seen this i have to get me some of that wax, cheers.
I've had this same problem with wire wool, something I've been thinking of doing but not done yet, is to get a reasonably big neodymium magnet and wrap the wool around prior to sanding. Maybe the magnet will keep the dropped filings on the mass of wool which you can then dust off away from the workspace between sandings. I hate the stuff for guitar bodywork, it gets into pickups not to mention under your fingernails.
Dude- you gave away one of my secrets for free! That Renaissance Wax is an amazing clear hard wax (not at all cheap) and is the final step on all my clear wood finishes.
Hi Ben. I also hate wire wool for similar reasons. I started using fine Scotchbrite as an alternative. No splinters, no rust, non magnetic. Good stuff.
Is this oil finish sanded level or open pore? I’m wondering, if we do leave them open and it’s not sanded completely level wouldn’t they show up as little shiny spots in flatter sheen finish?
Hi!! Thank you for you tutorials! Can I apply the wax without the wire wool, I mean can I Just skip this step and go straight to the waxing? Would the results be too different? Thank you!!!
It also gets inside your phone speaker and slowly kill it. it happened to me several times. I've just recently discovered these abrasive impregnated nylon pads that do almost the same job, except that even the finest grain ones are still a bit more abrasive than #0000 liberon steel wool. They're essentially finer versions of those scotch brite green pads. I'm getting excellent results with these.
I use that brand of wax, it really is like no other, I like to do rosewood fretboards and yesterday just put it on my strings, I don't know if it's good on the wound strings, but I'm betting the plain strings will corrode much slower if at all. I also applied it as you would lubrication under the nut with a q-tip, I won't know how well it works for quite some time but I bet it will work. You know when you got those scissors out, wax them too, much less tape glue residue build up. Needless to say it's magic to get a granite plate from being sticky, same goes for steel such as a bandsaw's. Buy the big can or else it will cost much more per oz., it goes a looooooong way so don't think it's too expensive.
That sounds like a great idea! Did it end up staying off corrosion of the plain steel strings? Since you made the comment 3-ish years ago - I have to know how it worked out for you! Cheers
@@TylrVncnt I have a big tube of "Big Bends" for reducing nut friction, and whenever I have issues with the strings sticking while tuning "ping" I use that. But I know it does work on all the other things I said it would. But as for a nut lubricant, I didn't keep track and I have many guitars. Big Bends is expensive and I guess I should tape a piece of paper inside the pot cavity with notes about the brand of strings, date changed, nut lubed and if I did put wax on the strings.
Bronze wool is like steel wool but is bronze. It doesn't make as much dust, also being bronze if a small speck is embedded in the wood there is no chance that it will in the future rust producing a dark spot. You can apply the wax with a piece of very fine Bronze wool working the wax into the wood. A boot brush, only used for renaissance wax, is great for the first go at polishing before moving over to flannel.
What kind of oil did you apply before steel wool and renaissance wax? I’m refinishing a knife handle with burl scales, and I’m thinking of using this same method. Thank you
Are the brass knuckles hanging in your shop in the background a requisite for lutherie, or rather a recommended aid for payment acquisition? Hehe. Love your videos. Thanks for posting them, I've found them invaluable.
"Tiny little bits of wire wool cutting into you is not desirable." - The dude with a head tattoo that seems like it would be agonizing to me. Jokes aside, this is beautiful.
Beautiful piece of work and very interesting to not only see what is happening, but also have a very clear description as to why you are doing what you are doing. Very well spoken to.
I absolutely hate steel wool. Getting it stuck in my fingers was the worst thing while working on servicing brass instruments. But as you said, it does the job. Awesome guitar coming along however, Ben!
Ren Wax is the absolute shit! If you haven't discovered it yet, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it. You'll find a TON of uses for it. And don't let the price of a can scare you away. The stuff lasts FOREVER! That guitar is absolutely gorgeous!
You have a large stock of it... If you want I can take some off your hands and take that depressing stock away.. Just think of it.. Off your mind forever ;).... Great video as usual!!
Ben's voice and the sound of the wood being touched and scraped is such a wonderful unintentional ASMR... I'm learning and relaxing at the same time.
That finish is astonishing, I had forgotten how beautiful wax finishes were. Cheers
The patina is simply wonderful and definitely accented by the Renaissance. Beautiful yet no doubt tactile.

I love the results of the wool with wax finish, I wonder if there is a synthetic pad that could get the same results
yes, there are. 3m make abrasive pads in various grades that would get there :)

or keep the magnet in a sealed plastic bag
+Ian Clarke good thinking! 😁
Amazing, i wire wool all my oil finishes to a nice flat satin-ish look and finally use a polishing compound but now i've seen this i have to get me some of that wax, cheers.
I've just realized the hardest part of guitar building: handing something like that over for someone else to take away once it's done.

Not cheap but goes a long way.
Hi Ben. I also hate wire wool for similar reasons. I started using fine Scotchbrite as an alternative. No splinters, no rust, non magnetic. Good stuff.
I know he's long since moved on from this, but I still use and love this process!
Turtle wax works really good as well. A gunsmith showed me that years ago. It hardens and is very easy to work with.
The Paste or Liquid wax?
It's a past but it's very soft unlike most paste waxs' I've used in the past. Very easy to apply
Thank you!!!
yes, you can. the wire wool just smooths down any variations in the finish, if you are happy with the finish then go on with the wax. B
Thx I sanded down and redid my guitar like three times, Use Laquar, sanded back down, tried poly even worse. Just ordered this wax, thx a lot.
Have you tried Big 45 pads instead of steel wool? It does NOT leave those little shards or steel wool behind.

Is that a bubinga body??? Beautiful work none the less . Superbly crafted !! Cheers!!!
thank you Ben . question please can this be used on the sound board of an acoustic top ?
Hey Ben, is the oil you used on the body a hard wax oil?
the rivets don't do it for me, but the guitar is beautiful, and thanks so much for sharing your work here, it's great
Здравствуйте 👋, скажите пожалуйста воск дают хороший блеск? 👍 долго держится?

So what was your long lasting thoughts? How did it hold up? And gunk? Collect oils and sweat?
He ended up a few months later stripping the wax off and applying shellac and more oil.
I wonder if they would be allowed to send that type of wax to the states, of course after paying for it?
Beautiful! I just used some on a evh wolfgang stealth with the matte finish and it looks much better. thanks again
+Michael Collings my pleasure, it is a fantastic wax and we still use it daily at Crimson
How long after your last coat of oil finish (danish, tung, teak), should you wait before applying wax using this method?
Renaissance wax also works great to polish up firearms
I might give it a try on a guitar sometime
+Headknocker it is truly awesome stuff!

Great tips, thanks! Never heard of “bronze wool” before - I’ll have to check that out!
Cheers
I adore serie with this guitar , always nice to watch.
Would you recommend renaissance wax for a neck?
@Another Wacko yeah, I have. It works decently enough. Feels good under the hands.
What kind of oil did you apply before steel wool and renaissance wax? I’m refinishing a knife handle with burl scales, and I’m thinking of using this same method. Thank you
You can check it out on the channel! 😊 He put lemon, danish and teak oil.
Well presented and fluent. Wow ! Now if i could only find an eraser to remove the hyroglyphics from your h...

That wax did an amazing job.
Love Renaissance Wax !!
Yes it is a great product that we use a lot! B
Beautiful wood grain! Love it.
B
That really is beautiful Ben excellent and its wood.Regards Rudy.
Is this safe to use on an ebony board to bring it to a glossy finish?
Absolutely 👍👍
When I began apprenticing as a gunsmith I was introduced to Renaissance Wax... Great stuff
So i can use renaissence wax on top of Danish oil?
Hi Ben, I have a lot of 0000 Grade "Super Fine" steel wool. How is this different to your 4.0 grade mentioned.
It's the same four zeros = 0000 = 4.0
Beautiful work 💗
Ben, would you use the Renaissance wax for regular maintenance of that guitar?
This dude talks like a sophisticated British librarian but looks like the leader of a motorcycle gang
Very nice, what kind of wood is that again? I will have to look out for that renaissance wax!
The body is Claro walnut from the US. Often used in gun stocks and one of my favourite woods.
Many thanks!
Anyone ever try Arm-R-seal?
did you use a finishing oil first? or is the wax a replacement for something like truoil?
He put lemon, danish and teak oil first.
"Tiny little bits of wire wool cutting into you is not desirable." - The dude with a head tattoo that seems like it would be agonizing to me.

Are you from South Africa? Just curios I was there 1970-80.
Beautiful piece of work and very interesting to not only see what is happening, but also have a very clear description as to why you are doing what you are doing.
Very well spoken to.
One of the best how to what to use vedios I have ever seen WoW factor 100%.....RocknRollFlat5
I absolutely hate steel wool. Getting it stuck in my fingers was the worst thing while working on servicing brass instruments. But as you said, it does the job. Awesome guitar coming along however, Ben!
gloves
Ryan Heath yeah i did end up wearing them occasionally
Gorgeous!
I like your Knuckleduster!
Turns out they are illegal here.. I found it as a template for a Vai inspired thing and.. well.. I don't have it any more!

Thank you, I agree! although when I read the comment I scanned over the word 'the' and thought you hated it at first! B
That's a great hunk of wood...
Renaissance Wax is enjoy a bit of a comeback of late. :)
That wax is amazing!!
Gorgeous.
was i the only one who saw resonance wax instead of renaissance wax at first?
Oooh! Good name for a guitar finish :)
Crimson Custom Guitars exactly, thats why i thought that xDD
You have a large stock of it... If you want I can take some off your hands and take that depressing stock away.. Just think of it.. Off your mind forever ;).... Great video as usual!!
3 years too late jajaja.
He's still got it I think. Mentioned it in a video a few months back.
Wow. Just wow.
Be interesting to get a cheap 200x microscope to inspect the grain before and after
Ben waxes lyrical
What a Beautiful piece of wood!
🖤🤍🖤
HOLY WOAH
i find that guitar more attractive then most women xD
Tyler Bushaw yeah, most woman are fat

This was painful
