  • Good news everyone, it looks like the fan showdown may end up being more than a fun little competition I run on the channel. Asetek took notice and decided it would be a great way to let the community design their next AIO pump cap.
    Welcome to the Asetek community design contest hosted by me Major Hardware.
    In this contest your goal is to design a one of a kind pump cap and submit that design to Asetek. If you are the lucky one to win as selected by the community you will win over $2000.00 worth of tech and tools to enhance your future designs.

    • @bigbuckoramma
      @bigbuckoramma 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Berserkism Its real simple. Other companies made AIO coolers before Asetek. Other companies had integrated designs before Asetek. Asetek filed for the patent, and waited nearly a decade to actually register it for approval in 2012. The ONLY patent office that accepted it, was the US. Asetek immediately began suing competition to block them from the US market. Namely Cooler Master, and CoolIT Systems, who both already had products on the market PRIOR to Aseteks Patent acceptance in the US, and PRIOR to all of the patents being rejected around the world. If you visit Aseteks website, and their list of Patents, you will note that ONLY US Patents are listed, as every other patent office rejected their patent as "obvious."
      You will also note that CoolIT Systems has Patents that go back to the early 2000's as well, and many that predate Asetek. Some of them for things like the Jet Plate design which is ubiquitous in the custom cooling block industry. Have you ever seen or heard of a Lawsuit from CoolIT sueing EK, or Corsair for the Jet Plate design? Or any other water cooling company for Low Pressure High Flow Liquid Heat Exchanger block designs? CoolIT owns the patent on that too, even at the industrial level.
      Additionally, after Asetek strongarmed Corsair in to dropping CoolIT as their OEM supplier, they started running around threatening legal action to other cooling companies, forcing them to pay a royalty, or use their hardware.
      Then, in 2021, Asetek took a hard hit financially. WHen you only have one market you can manipulate with a bad patent, you also only have one factory, and one supply chain to it, all overseas in China. When the backlash from 2020 and COVID hit their factory, they posted massive losses in 2021. Above that, many other players were arriving in the US market around that same time with superior performing designs. Namely Arctic Cooling in perfect timing with the Ryzen 3000 launch. Which uses a completely unique design from Asetek, but Asetek is none the less trying to actively pursue them legally to prevent sale of their products in the US. And fropm most of what has been made public, the claim is extremely generalized, basically stating that because its a CLC, it infringes on their US patents.
      The underlying crux here, that also leads to this being morally bankrupt, is that the patent expires in 2025. And it would seem that Asetek intend to bully their way to as much revenue from abusing that patent as possible while they still can. A prime example of this is that Asetek failed to push into the OEM market for HPC enterprise liquid cooling solutions. So they exited that market claiming they were burning through cash and didnt "materialize meaningful returns"...but still look poised to bully competitors in that market space with their patents. As a result of this, some liquid cooling manufacturers, especially within the view of the emerging 2022 financial crisis, are looking to stop producing AIO's all together. Not just because of rising materials costs, but to avoid any Licensing to Asetek on a patent that only has a 3 year shelf life. It simply isnt worth the hassle. So they will just wait it out. And in the end, no one wins, especially not the consumer.
      This is all readily available information. So try being informed, instead of being a blind sheep running to their defense.

      Problem is that it isn't legal, every country aside from the US did not grant their patent on the grounds of it being too obvious. Only the US was idiotic enough to grant it, but they've previously granted "that thing everyone does, but done with a computer" type patents, so there's no surprises there.

    Even though the first prize is pretty hefty for any individual it still MUCH cheaper for Asetek to do this than to hire a professional designer to do the design, so in comparison this is basically them getting free labour of the youtube audience. And in addition as someone else in the comment section said, it's very likely that they get all the rights to everything submitted (although this is hard to confirm since they just have an email address which doesn't allow the submitter to read the terms before submitting) which could possibly prevent anyone participating from using the submitted design in future works. I love this channel however, something smells about this competition.
    It feels like the class bully asking you nicely to do their homework for the year in exchange for a chocolate bar. Sure they might be making a genuine request but the remuneration they are offering doesn't reflect the value (savings on R&D and marketing costs) they are receiving, which might be fine from a team player but for years Asetek have not been the communities friend and now they are asking for favors. That doesn't seem nice. I advise caution.
    On a more personal note:
    The appeal of the fan showdown was the quantifiable nature of the competition. You could add your aesthetics and design all you wanted but the fan had to perform as a fan first and foremost. I don't really see any value is just going to some website and looking at some designs for an AIO cap.
    I hope it goes well for all involved but it's not something that I have any interest in.

    I initially thought this would be a "community R&D" for the pump blades inside the AIO - which as an idea would be awesome - similar to redesigning the fan blades on the A12X25 - redesigning the pump blades inside the AIO could actually improve cooling performance and then make it's way into an actual design. Just designing the cap seems fairly useless to me, and like a huge missed opportunity.
    Also - I have to agree with the rest of the community, Asetek is the wrong brand to do this with, and the rewards don't match what's being offered. At least it is only printing an essentially throw-away component, but it feels like there should be a decent lump sum to buy the rights to the design, or a % of sales handed to the designer, or some type of real remuneration. Let's do some math. The price of the Asetek AIO pump is around $125. Designing the cap could take you about 4-5 hours (depending on how complex you are making it), meaning that if you were to get into the poll, your work would be worth about $25 - $31 per hour. The average salary for a CAD Designer in the US is $27 per hour.
    So there is a CHANCE that you will get accepted into the poll and win the average pay for a normal CAD Designer. Although it is more likely that you will not get accepted and will instead have just worked for 5 hours for no pay.
    Not to mention that you probably also don't have a use for the prize, unless if you happen to have a computer laying around with no cooler, and that it is cheaper for Asetek to pay with their own products than to give you a proper paycheck (let's assume a 30% profit margin, making the pump worth $96 to them and your time worth $19 - $24. Way less than the average salary.)
    Edit: As _President-Elect Prydzen_ mentioned in the replies, this would fall under product designer work, which in the US, is $48.49 per hour. So in other words, you are paid almost half of what they would pay an actual employee.

      Not to mention, where is the fine print for the rules? Haven't been posted, very sus. Just like your posts.
      Additionally, within those rules, wherever they are, it is very likely, based on literally every other contest like this, that once you submit a design, you lose all rights to it. You ever been to a Burger King, and opened their doors with those spatula handles? That was a "non-winning" design in a college engineering student design competition. The actual designer of that hasn't seen a dime, and never will. I can see both sides, this is an awesome recognition of this channel's talents and work. That Asetek knew where they can find a pool of talent and do some damage control with the community. They have shown some good faith by offering their cap design to be placed as an open source. While some might scoff at that, there is some R&D time put into everything. Time is money and nothing is truly free.
    But a lot of people have pointed that participants should be leery. I'd prefer to see a full list of stipulations for entry. With what little has been put out there i would assume all designs are held by the creator (there is nothing from Asetek at this point stating any submissions become their property). Obviously the winning submission would though. I can also see them limiting the final designs to something that could be mass produced easily and cheaply. But it is their money that will be manufacturing the winning design.
    For those wanting a % stake you have to be careful. Asetek can easily do a limited special edition run and limit any losses. What they're offering to the winner in actuality isn't too bad. The vague 6000 series gpu is a bit of a gamble but overall the value is there.

    Asetek as a firm known for their pump on top of waterblock patent. Which is bizarre to me how the patent instution gave it to them(or anybody which would apply for it first ) . A lot of people furious , talking they are basicaly getting free-lance work for free etc but C'mon guys... It's not a high skill needed engineering part , it's a cap ... You don't need to run injection mold CFD simulations and prove your design is better , I bet they gonna spend more time optimize injection stuff than you modelling it ...
    So yeah ,I think no need to make it huge deal . If it was a fan contest yeah that's huge deal because it effects the performance and you should not make it for simply a pc ... But it's a cap and probly they have models for it but making it to a contest making it interesting and worth to mention it on box or on youtube reviews , so worth it...

    seems to me that Asetek just found a way to pay the equivalent of about 1-2k$ for what could easily be hundreds of community-man-hours going into the design of this component. A competition like this without at the very least offering royalties on the design, or better paying serious money (like an engineering consultant's wage) to the winner and finalists is a predatory practice looking to take advantage of the community's free labor.

    • @jameswalker199
      @jameswalker199 ปีที่แล้ว

      1-2k is probably the amount of hourly pay it'd take one of their designers to cad this up. Take the middle of the road at 1500, and say it took four hours to go from drawing board to final file, that's 375 an hour of pay, pre-spent on computer hardware. A piss in the ocean for the company, but they are treating you like an employee

    • @martinmckee5333
      @martinmckee5333 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a fair criticism of the formats, but the point was to choose something that was supported across all platforms. FreeCAD for instance, does not handle parasolid. Fusion 360 can import them, but not export. And then things like TinkerCAD are even more limited.
      In a professional environment, better file formats are a reasonable requirement, but for a community project with a bunch of hobbyists, the neutral file formats are just much more available.
